Rob Ford Can't Support Bike Lanes

cityhallI've commented before on the stupid things Rob Ford says. He's a city councillor for Etobicoke North who says some awfully dumb stuff, but his quote in yesterday's Star may just be his most moronic statement to date.

I can't support bike lanes. Roads are built for buses, cars, and trucks. My heart bleeds when someone gets killed, but it's their own fault at the end of the day.

There are so many things wrong with that statement, I don't know where to begin. Perhaps I'll refrain from further comment and let Rob Ford's words echo alone.

You know how many time I've almost been hit by bikers when I'm crossing at the crosswalk? They believe that the rules of the road don't apply to them. Plus, I don't know any councillor who has done more for the youth of their ward than Rob Ford.

Well yeah, without bike lanes and laws that forbid them to ride on sidewalks, the rules of the road don't apply to them...

Tee: I generally find that cyclists are about as bad drivers as motorists are. I have almost been hit by cars a lot more often than bikes. I think people don't realize this because they train themselves to be more cautious around cars.

I think that there needs to be a greater push in educating road users in safety, and penalizing those who break the laws. A car breaking traffic laws is much more dangerous than a bike breaking traffic laws.
