My Name is Michael, I Got a Nickel

Published January 29, 2007 @ 12:54 in Memories

rewindAs a child, I owned this plastic toy radio that only played one song. It played the tune from Clint Holmes' "Playground In My Mind" and on the back it had the lyrics to this verse from that song.

My name is Michael, I got a nickel
I got a nickel, shiny and new
I'm gonna buy me all kinds of candy
That's what I'm gonna do.

Being a Michael, I thought this was pretty cool. I didn't have to Google those lyrics, they're tattooed on my brain for all of eternity. In fact, I still have that old radio. It found its way into an old box of mine and has followed me from home to home over the past fifteen years.

Are there any Michael's out there who didn't hear this verse from "Playground In My Mind" a million times growing up?

My mom grew up with the daughter of the man who wrote that song. The man also had a younger son who was 5...named Michael. He was the little boy that sang the song. I can put you in touch with him.

R.F., that's really cool. It would be neat hearing from the Michael that song is about. I'd be happy to post something by him about this tune.

I just had this verse pop into my head out of the blue today. I hadn't thought of it in over 25 years, and even when I was young I didn't know where it originated. I googled it and found this article, and I'm glad you told of the origins. You've solved a mystery for me.

BTW, one other verse I remember goes something like this: My name is Cindy, I found a penny, I found a penny all shiny and new. I'm gonna buy me all sorts of candy, that's what I'm gonna do.

I loved this song as a kid and now sing it to my son Michael. The Cindy verse as I remember it goes.
My name is Cindy, when we get married, we're gonna have a baby or two. We're gonna take them to visit their grandma, that's what we're gonna do.

Being a newspaper reporter - I like to get the facts straight. According to a lyrics website the Cindy verse is close to what I remember. Exept, it goes,
We're gonna LET them visit their grandma.
Everybody sing now . . .

We have the same exact box, which was passed down to me from my cousin, Michael, when my brother and I were young. I now have a daughter, Harriet. We played that music box from the day she was born and it is one of the few things that comfort her, no-fail. We changed the lyrics to accommodate:

My name is Harriet
I've got a chariot
I've got a chariot
Shiny and new
I'm gonna use it
to crush some skulls
That'swhat I'm gonna do

She loves it.

Awesome! I had the same box and my mom used to sing to me. I ran across the lyrics somewhere and googled to find your post. thanks for posting the pics, it brings back all kind of childhood memories (born in 72)

My brother, Anthony not a Michael, had this toy as a child and carried it everywhere with him. He's 33 now and the only toy my mom has saved from our childhood is this music box. I haven't thought about it in at least 10 years, but I'm expecting my first child soon and we're naming him Michael after my father-in-law and just remembered my brother's toy radio. I also remembered all the words and sang it for my husband he thought I was crazy. I called my brother and he still has it, I can't wait to play it for my son.

So funny that other people in this world look this stuff up! I have a brother michael and sister cindy, and they used to tell me the song was written for them! Now, i am trying to find the song that goes "my name aint lisa, my name is julie, lisa left you, years ago" those are some lyrics. Also, i am looking up 2 more things. Back in the 70s girls wore hair ribbons that looked like yarn. I wore all the time, want to see if they are available anywhere. And, my friend lisa (and yes, my name is julie, why i loved that song)had a 4 seated merrygo round that with pushing your feet and hands on a metal bar, made the thing go around? anyone know what i mean? trying to find on internet to look at!it was in the 70s early
