My Name is Michael, I Got a Nickel

Published by Toronto Mike on January 29, 2007 @ 12:54 in Memories

rewindAs a child, I owned this plastic toy radio that only played one song. It played the tune from Clint Holmes' "Playground In My Mind" and on the back it had the lyrics to this verse from that song.

My name is Michael, I got a nickel
I got a nickel, shiny and new
I'm gonna buy me all kinds of candy
That's what I'm gonna do.

Being a Michael, I thought this was pretty cool. I didn't have to Google those lyrics, they're tattooed on my brain for all of eternity. In fact, I still have that old radio. It found its way into an old box of mine and has followed me from home to home over the past fifteen years.

Are there any Michael's out there who didn't hear this verse from "Playground In My Mind" a million times growing up?

My mom grew up with the daughter of the man who wrote that song. The man also had a younger son who was 5...named Michael. He was the little boy that sang the song. I can put you in touch with him.

R.F., that's really cool. It would be neat hearing from the Michael that song is about. I'd be happy to post something by him about this tune.

I just had this verse pop into my head out of the blue today. I hadn't thought of it in over 25 years, and even when I was young I didn't know where it originated. I googled it and found this article, and I'm glad you told of the origins. You've solved a mystery for me.

BTW, one other verse I remember goes something like this: My name is Cindy, I found a penny, I found a penny all shiny and new. I'm gonna buy me all sorts of candy, that's what I'm gonna do.

I loved this song as a kid and now sing it to my son Michael. The Cindy verse as I remember it goes.
My name is Cindy, when we get married, we're gonna have a baby or two. We're gonna take them to visit their grandma, that's what we're gonna do.

Being a newspaper reporter - I like to get the facts straight. According to a lyrics website the Cindy verse is close to what I remember. Exept, it goes,
We're gonna LET them visit their grandma.
Everybody sing now . . .

We have the same exact box, which was passed down to me from my cousin, Michael, when my brother and I were young. I now have a daughter, Harriet. We played that music box from the day she was born and it is one of the few things that comfort her, no-fail. We changed the lyrics to accommodate:

My name is Harriet
I've got a chariot
I've got a chariot
Shiny and new
I'm gonna use it
to crush some skulls
That'swhat I'm gonna do

She loves it.

Awesome! I had the same box and my mom used to sing to me. I ran across the lyrics somewhere and googled to find your post. thanks for posting the pics, it brings back all kind of childhood memories (born in 72)

My brother, Anthony not a Michael, had this toy as a child and carried it everywhere with him. He's 33 now and the only toy my mom has saved from our childhood is this music box. I haven't thought about it in at least 10 years, but I'm expecting my first child soon and we're naming him Michael after my father-in-law and just remembered my brother's toy radio. I also remembered all the words and sang it for my husband he thought I was crazy. I called my brother and he still has it, I can't wait to play it for my son.

We're gonna let them visit their grandma

So funny that other people in this world look this stuff up! I have a brother michael and sister cindy, and they used to tell me the song was written for them! Now, i am trying to find the song that goes "my name aint lisa, my name is julie, lisa left you, years ago" those are some lyrics. Also, i am looking up 2 more things. Back in the 70s girls wore hair ribbons that looked like yarn. I wore all the time, want to see if they are available anywhere. And, my friend lisa (and yes, my name is julie, why i loved that song)had a 4 seated merrygo round that with pushing your feet and hands on a metal bar, made the thing go around? anyone know what i mean? trying to find on internet to look at!it was in the 70s early

I would love to find that toy! We would sing this to my brother Michael all the time - every now and then he gets an answer machine recording from me/his friends to keep haunting him of our growing up in the 70's.

My name is Cindy, and my husband is Michael. We actually grew up on the same street. I didn't like him as a kid, and others used to tease me about the song. Guess what-we're married now! I was telling our kids about the song today.

I remember this song well, Michael!
I know this thread is old but, for Julie, the song is actually "I'm not Lisa." See http://www.cowboylyrics.com/lyrics/colter-jessi/im-not-lisa-13311.html

(Just doin' my part!)

Wow I remember that song from childhood too. And I had the same kind of radio, except mine played "Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head". I used to wind it up and balance it on the knob and put small toys on my mini rotating stage.

I actually have the little music box, too. We've kept that thing for about 20 years and it still works! After all the wear and tear we've put it through, it's still playing strong. This just proves my theory that things that are older are built better. ^-^

I am37, My name is Michael. I had a bad childhood. My mother bought me this toy when I was real young..I had it with ME all the time, I spent much time alone due to.... well lets just say this song has followed me everyday. I never even thought to Google it until it escaped the box I still carry in my brain and that haunting Melodie stirred like a horror show tune mixed with a warped happiness it somehow gave me back then....I am still mad at myself because I have remembered as ".....shiny and bright, shiny and bright" I must have re written it in my head as a kid....really cool to know of all this! Now I will NEVER GET IT OUT OF MY HEAD!

I have a 45 record from a promo called the Lucky Strike Hour. On it are several short songs, one is, "My Name is Michael, I got a nickel, a bright shiney nickel and I found it today...I'm gonna use it, to buy a pipe dream, and I'm gonna give it to you right away" Is this the same song?

CharlesCairo

I stand corrected, the record is the same size of a 45rpm except it has a small center hole and it is a 33 1/3 rpm.

I bought this same Fisher Price toy for my son, Michael, when he was born in 1974. He is getting married in a few weeks and it will be one of my gifts personal to him. Not sure whether their will be a Jr. to hand it down to, but the possibility is there.

I think my parents still has it tucked away somewhere, and I'm thinking about digging it up and give it to my new born baby boy.

Also; I'm in Sweden.
