Humble Howard, Are You Okay?

Published by Toronto Mike on July 14, 2006 @ 19:50 in Edge 102 ~ CFNY, Humble and Fred, Radio, The Best of Toronto Mike, Toronto News ~ Toronto Focus

radioAll day long I've been getting hits from people Googling Humble Howard leaves mix and other similar searches. I rank rather highly for these searches, thanks to this entry about Fred Patterson getting the boot last September. I listened to Humble & Fred every morning for years when they were on CFNY Edge 102 but I lost touch with the geeks that groove when they signed on with Mix 99.9.

All of these Google searches got me wondering if Humble Howard had jumped or was pushed from his morning slot at the station that loves Dixie Chicks and Coldplay. There is nothing on the subject at Google News Canada but a quick visit to the Mix 99.9 program schedule reveals that Steve Anthony is penciled in the 5:00 am spot. Is this simply a vacation for Humble Howard Glassman or is there a little fire amidst this smoke?

Mornings end for Humble Howard
Fired from Mix 99.9

Zosia Bielski
National Post

Saturday, July 15, 2006

Seventeen years in a business known for abrupt endings and Humble Howard had never been canned. Until Thursday night.

Citing poor listenership, Mix 99.9 fired its morning man.

"As they say in the business, it wasn't gaining any traction," Howard Glassman, a.k.a. Humble Howard, said yesterday. "We weren't attracting any new listeners."

Mr. Glassman hosted the morning show for three years. His producer, Bingo Bob, and co-host Judy Croon were also let go.

"[Mr. Glassman] was working real hard. Everything was good except that we had a smaller than we wanted loyal audience," said Pat Holiday, vice-president and general manager of the Mix, EZ Rock and CFRB.

Last year, the station fired the other half of Humble and Fred, co-host Fred Patterson. The show ran from 5:30 to 9 every morning.

"It was a sarcastic, funny, irreverent show," Mr. Glassman said yesterday. "They knew I'd worked my ass off; it just wasn't in the direction they were going."

Mr. Glassman's boss waited until he got back from a family vacation at Disney World to fire him.

"No sense in ruining his vacation," Mr. Holiday said.

Yesterday, Mr. Glassman enjoyed the day off with a game of golf, speaking to the National Post in between swings. He hadn't told his friends yet.

Since 1989, Mr. Glassman has been a morning staple, bouncing from the Mix to The Edge (102.1) to Mojo 640 Radio.

"I'm disappointed. ... This is the first time in my career that I've been canned," Mr. Glassman said, adding he is still under contract with the station.

"Under the circumstances, they couldn't have been better about it. They felt bad for me because they knew I worked, very very hard."

Although he wouldn't name Mr. Glassman's replacement yesterday, Mr. Holiday did say "a whole new morning show" would start up soon, with new hosts from outside Mix 99.9. He denied former MuchMusic VJ Steve Anthony, who has been taking over for Humble, would replace him.

"Howard's a really good guy," said Mr. Holiday. "I feel really bad about it. It's kind of a drag."

As for what's next, Mr. Glassman is considering print journalism, and he even has a writer's habits: "I love having written, but hate writing." In the past, he has written columns for National Post and Eye Magazine.

Mostly, he's looking forward to spending more time with his kids, both of whom cried when their father broke the bad news at lunch yesterday.

"It was a little bit unnerving and they were very scared about what's going to happen to us. Then they kind of perked up and 'Are you gonna be like a regular dad now?' "

Unfortunate circumstances, but I finally beat the mainstream media to a story.

Humble will land on his feet. He kept me tuned for years and years... I even watched his talk show with Ed the Sock!

Aw man, I just thought he was on vacation. What's with all these media personality cuts lately? I hope we hear/see him again soon. His voice & humour are just too good. My mornings won't be the same... :(

I can't believe they would get rid of Humble - love love love that guy... he was the one I looked forward to hearing every morning and I was counting the days until he got back from vacation... now who will get me thru traffic? Does anyone know of a website or e-mail where we can send messages to him?

Ah, I see. No humble? back to JackFM for me.

I can't believe this. Humble made my stupid horomonal teenage dramas totally leave the room while I was listening to The Mix. So they want New Listeners? Forget about new onee, they're losing the Old.

e-mail input@mix999.com with these suggestions! make them feel that they have lost more listeners than they will gain, and if we convince them to re-hire before summer vacation is over, they can say that nothing ever happened.

hey mike
thanks for the nice words and thoughts...i'm taking some time to figure out what to do, in the meantime i wrote a thing in the national post about being fired and i'll be doing a column a week for the next few weeks....
be well,
h
if you like here's a copy of the fired article...
1200 WORDS ABOUT GETTING FIRED.

“Mornings end for Humble Howard.” That was the headline in last Saturdays Toronto section of The National Post. Mornings didn’t end for me, just my job. One I have done since 1977 and in Toronto since 1989. The reporter, a nice person named Zosia talked to me the day after I was let go. I was still in some kind of just-got-fired-shock and I’m not sure I was much help to her. She got the facts straight though; I was no longer going to be doing the morning show at the Mix with my friends Judy Croon and Bingo Bob…they were fired too. No more Humble Howard Morning Show. Wow. Later I spoke with Rob Roberts the Post editor and he asked me if I could put together a piece around 12 hundred words about getting fired. Could I? Like most newly fired people I could do 12 thousand! I’ll try and stick to the assignment.
The First Words. Are you F**king Kidding me?
The Next? Shock. Disbelief. More shock. Then Numbness.
I pace. It’s a week ago Thursday and I’ve just gotten off the phone with my friend and General Manager of The Mix, Pat Holiday. He called to tell me I’m Gone. That sucks. It’s 2:15. I’m on holidays, so my 8 year old and I are spending the day outside around the pool drawing Disney girl pictures. My wife and oldest daughter are out. I put the phone down and go back outside and just stare into space. It’s one of the nicest days of the year, I’m with my sweet baby girl and I can’t focus. I’ve just been canned. So now what? I pace some more. Should I drink? Is that what you’re supposed to do when you’ve been let go. You always see that in the movies…some dude leaves the office with his box of personal stuff and ducks into some dark bar and downs a shot of something brown. It’s usually Ben Affleck.
Me. I go back to drawing pictures of Snow White and The Little Mermaid. My Ariel suffers.
Holy Crap. I’ve just been told I no longer have a job. I can’t call anyone because I want to tell my wife first. I’m with my kid so I’m trying to not lose it.
“Daddy what’s the matter?” She Says.
“Nothing honey, why?”
“Cause you just drew a black X across Snow Whites head!”
Kids know.
Finally my wife comes home and we begin a series of hushed and scared conversations. She’s mad. I’m still sort of bewildered. I’ve been fired for less than 4 hours and I don’t know what to do. We decide not to tell the kids right away but they can feel something’s up. Fired people have a look about them!
I go to my computer and Google “Getting Fired.” 39 millions entries! I guess a lot of people get fired. It’s my first time. I’m new.
The articles are instructional: “There’s a big difference between getting fired and laid off…” (Yeah but I’ll bet they both suck Ass.)
Some are spiritual: “An Opportunity for Change and Growth” (They suck too!)
Some are depressing: “Learning to live with Failure” (Hey thanks for the pick me up.)
The next few days are a series of phone calls from friends and colleagues who claim shock and offer support. I continue to feel weird.
More words about being fired. Fired people hear this phrase a lot. “When a door closes a window opens…” or something like that.
I’ve been told this 37 time in 48 hours. This must have something to do with the Opportunity for Change and Growth-both of which are painful.
“When G*D closes a door He opens a door.” G*D didn’t fire me, the radio station did.
Let me tell you…when you’re let go, they close the door, bury the key, change the address and kick you to the curb. They’re basically saying the door is shut and don’t let it hit you in the hiney on the way out.
I’ve been through this before…sort of.
Last year in August my long time partner (radio not life) Fred Patterson was punted. Remember The Humble and Fred Show?
He was confused, pissed off and perplexed. I now know how he feels. We had been a radio duo for 14 years and for the last 11 months I’ve been answering endless e-mails and phone calls: “What happened to Fred? Where’s Fred?
Frankly I got sick of making stuff up. Finally he told me to just tell people he was fired. Well he was.
Now, so am I.
Radio people never get to say goodbye. Why is that? People you’ve grown up with, grown old with, grown accustomed to just suddenly disappear. One day they’re there, the next they’re on holidays and then they’re gone. Mike Cooper once told me that he hated taking vacation because he was never sure he’d have a gig when he got back. Radio is weird.
Great. Now the What Happened To Fred Question will be replaced by the What Happened to You Question. Being fired is humiliating. I’ve already learned that.
I would have liked to say goodbye. So would Fred. I have been doing a morning show for nearly 2 decades in Toronto and have come into contact with a lot of people. I would like to say thank you.
Thank you for the loyalty and the listening and the feedback and the laughs and the mountain of freebees!
More Words.
I will miss the Free Stuff.
You can’t imagine all the stuff that Radio People get from Promo Companies who want us to talk about their product. It’s intoxicating. Forget free concerts and tickets to shows and t-shirts. I’m talking trips, toys, golf, food….in Radio the FreeBee is one of the great side-benefits. Stuff just shows up on your desk every other day and it’s addicting. I will miss that.
I’ll miss being silly. I’m 46 years old and for most of my life from high school till now I’ve had a job where I get to be really really silly for a living. The kind of silly you are when you get home from your grown up jobs and you’ve had a beer and your acting weird with your kids. That’s been my gig for as long as I can remember. I don’t think I’m ready to grow up.
Some Sad Words.
We finally tell the girls. They cry. I’m devastated. They look so scared and small and I think this must be the worst of it. So far it is. I tell them we are blessed. I tell a lot of people this over the next few days but it started with them.
A lot of people in the world are way worse off than we are, I say. I believe it and so do they.
I was fired but the company has been generous and I will have what’s known in the firing business as a “soft landing!”
Funny but it still hurts.
My oldest daughter asks if this means I’m going to be a regular dad now and maybe I could get a job at McDonalds. I tell her that this just means that Papa is going to drive her and her sister to camp and that I don’t know if McDonalds needs another clown.
Some Final Words.
It’s been over a week now and I still haven’t told my Dad.
If you’ve been through this you know why.
I don’t know what to say.
“Hey Pop, me and the family are moving back to Moose Jaw with you for a while and I may be looking for work as a fry cook!”
I hope to stay here in Toronto as it’s home to all the people we love, but I don’t know. I’m woefully unqualified to do anything but make stupid jokes on the radio and if there’s no place for me here I’ll have to find it somewhere else.
I’m like a lot of fired, newly fired and soon to be fired people who all share a single thought…

NOW WHAT?

Thanks for the words Howard! Being in radio for 15 plus years and being fired once... Howard I have no doubt in my mind that you'll bounce back... bigger and better! Don't worry the "swag" will return as well!

Given what is going on in the world these days, Toronto radio needs more and not less, good humour. With any luck Fred will be along side for the ride next time around. Who knows, the stars could be aligning to the point where Humble & Fred could force me to give in and pay for satellite radio ! Just imagine, all Howard, all the time !

HOWARD!!! It's not fair! I feel tremendous sympathy for you and your family...such a devastating blow! I feel like I've lost a really good friend. It's not fair that radio people don't get to say goodbye.....but I know you'll be back, if that's the path you choose! People love you!!!!! Best wishes!

The fascinating thing is that the Mix is now doing a "Summer Vacation" and has essentially eliminated all of its DJs. You can't find a reference for any of them on Mix website. So the good news is that it's not about Howard - who we all know is great. It's about the Mix and wholesale change in strategy. Not that it makes it any easier for Howard and his family.

This really bites. I met Humble and Fred last June after I won a BBQ and went down to the station to BBQ ribs for them. Everyone-from Humble & Fred, Judy Croon and Bingo Bob were so nice. I can't handle listening to any other station in the morning because they just aren't funny!! Howard cracked me up so many times on my way to work-I will miss that. Some radio station better pick him up-I'm in withdrawal. I wish Howard (& Fred, Judy and Bob) all the best and truly hope everything works out. I hope Howard keeps us updated. I've been listening to him for years and I am totally boycotting the MIX over this.

Hey Howard :) Your morning show converted me over to the Mix and now I feel lost! I was "laid off" about 3 years ago, and I can understand the pain that you are going through. It almost feels like a death...you don't have a chance to say good-bye to your co-workers and in your case, listeners. I know it is frustrating to hear "when one window closes another opens..." but I am going to join that camp. Because I was laid off, I had the opportunity to go after my lifetime career dream. I know that you were already in the job of your dreams, but.... some time from now, you could very well be in the midst of something even better. (You won't realize this now because you are probably still in shock...it seriously is like going through a death...) Enjoy the time (bonus- it's summer!)with your kids, sleep in! Be good to yourself. With time, you may actually say to yourself that it was good that this happened because you wouldn't be doing ____________________.

Howard - I was devasted when I turned on my radio the morning of July 17th - I knew that was the day you were returning from holidays. All the way into work I heard not one DJ on the MIX and I then began to wonder what the hell happened to all of you guys and remembered what happened to Freddy P. last summer after his vacation. I will not be listening to the MIX any more the only reason I switched over was because of you and Fred. Your morning show made me laugh all the way to work. Good luck in your new ventures and I am sure some show will scoop you up. Any chance of a HUMBLE AND FRED reunion?

I know there are some people that probably will not get our attachment to radio personalities and that really is sad for them. We make no apologies for our closeness to people that we want to hear more than the din of our own families.

I turned my wife onto the fellas some eight years ago because any woman I was going to marry had to get, and like, the humour of The Humble and Gred show. She embraced them immediately on Mojo and moved to the MIx when they moved. As such, I married her two years ago and, upon our request, Howard and Fred were a part of our wedding as we played our "You're Getting Married" conversation on the show to all of our guests at the end of dinner and speeches.

The station of record at the time became our number one radio preset in each car. You got us to work every morning feeling better than when we left. I still play the CD because nothing is funnier than "cutesy-putesy Carla Collins", Fred farting on air, the off-air cursing sessions and I forget her name but the woman cussing like a teamster about the ass-wipe in the parking lot that hit her car.

Mix 99.9 will become an unused footnote on our dial once again because without the promise of someone who got what the listeners needed to hear, we don't feel a need to listen. We know this is the business but in every business the customer is your first, best and last gauge of whether or not they want to buy your product. Today, you have definitely lost two loyal customers forever.

Howard my friend, Pam and I will still make you black cake and punch a creme (that sweet, milky, liquor-laden drink we bring each year). If you still have one of our email addys, send us a note. Or go to my blog and leave me a message or email me from there. If all else fails, we will find you. Just know we are part of your extended family and are here to support you and your family in whatever path you take next.

Best of luck to you.
Victor

I went on vacation last year and when I returned, it was just Humble, no Fred. It was sad and strange, but naturally, I adjusted and stayed loyal to my Humble, Judy & Bob.
I just got back from vacation on the 23rd--my alarm sounds on the 24th, I hear that the Mix is on some sort of Summer Vacation, but was quickly reassured that "the dj's are coming back"...I breathed a sigh of relief. What would I do without my Humble Howard Morning Show?
Sadly, I'm going to have to find out now...as I took a closer look, and became one of those people that Googled 'Humble Howard', I realized that he was, in fact, NOT coming back...and neither were Judy or Bob.
This was easily the best morning show that I have ever listened to. I don't laugh out loud too much, but more often than not, I found myself having to re-do my mascara as I got ready because of something that Humble had said.
I am truly devastated that the Mix would choose to cast aside such a talented, kind and hilarious host.
Humble, best of luck to you--I know you'll find something better than the Mix.
As for me, I have begun my quest for another station to keep me going in the morning. I highly doubt that I will ever find a show that I will become so attached to as the Humble Howard program, but I will make the attempt. The thought of listening to Steve Anthony in the mornings horrifies me to no end. A Mix listener, I am no longer.

Well all I can say is I have been following Humble (and Fred) for all their time here in Toronto, from CFNY, to MOJO to the MIX and now to wherever he or they end up. Last year I emailed the show after the mysterious Fred disappearance. Howard answered me promptly with sincere honesty and no BS. I so much appreciated that. If Howard ends up on country, hard rock or nothing but the oldies, I will put up with the music just to listen to his show and his fantastic sense of humour. MIX you suck!!!!

Humble & Fred were the only reason I listened to The Mix. I have been there from the beginning, with Fred even before Howard at CFNY. Humble & Fred belong together on the Radio!

I switchd on the Mix after Kiss turned to JackFM and the only thing that kept me listening was the Humble and Fred morning show. You will be sorely missed - very few other radio stations that play mainstream music have a show with the bite and wit of Humble, Judy and Bob. Cheers guys, this one's for you!

No point turning to 99.9 any longer - the only truly fun morning radio show just went down the crapper. Maybe Pat "The Genius" Holiday will get real hip and hire Erin & Mike.
You'll be missed, Howard.

Uh, Mad Dog and Billie??? No thanks. Now what do I do? There isn't another morning show in Toronto worth listening to. Seriously, is my next best option Roger, Rick and Marilyn? How depressing.

I've always thought that Howard, Judy and Bingo Bob were the best part of the Mix. And I think its shitty for them to advertise, saying "the DJs are coming back" when its not true. Bring 'em back.

Shawn
July 31, 2006 / 07:29

I have to say I'm not a happy camper. Humble, Judy and Bob were what got me ready for my day on my way to work, relgiously, since I moved back to the area 2 years ago. I tried the other stations, but I wanted to drown Roger Rick and Marilyn in their own sap and Dillinger needs a good smack upside the head. I listened to Mad Dog and Billie for a short while after Darren moved on (how old is that?) but I have to say that, unless they got a bit more mature, less bitchy and much funnier, I may start listening to CDs on the way to work now. Thanks a lot, Mix 99.9

Jeff
July 31, 2006 / 08:05

I think it ironic that he was fired for not increasing listeners. Well, I can tell you that until a few months ago I listened to CHUM FM for the previous 9 years every morning on the way to work. A few months ago, I got bored and switched to my number two radio station (MIX) and the rest is history.

So now, after a very short (one-way) relationship, I'm sans morning show. Maybe it's time to switch to 680 News for both directions now.

I don't like Mad Dog or Billie, so "bye bye" Mix.

I just had to add my "ditto" to all of the above. I'm very sorry Howard. Like others, I'll follow you. I've been listening since the very beginning. Mad Dog? I don't think so! I guess it's Jack for me too.

I'm another Howard fan who followed him around the dial since he left CFNY. First Mojo, and then Mix. I have no reason to listen to either now, so I'll be changing again.

Why can't be news be that Dean is fired from CFNY?

When MIX 99.9 came up with "we're giving our DJ's the summer off" you just knew... I have to say that I like most tuned into the MIX because of Humble and Fred.

When Fred didn't come back everyone was curious as to the reason why. You figure what happened and you just wanted someone to tell you why but no matter because it just sucked. Let's be honest though in my opion Howard was the Carson and Fred was the McMahon of the morning show but it was a great combination. You don't break up a team like that right. They've been around forever. Boy was I wrong.

With Fred gone it just felt empty. I didn't want to listen to the mix but Howard was still there and I could just tell our morning show guy was not happy. What did they say to you Humble to make you carry on? It must of been hard.

Enter Judy and Bob and they filled the Fred's absense with there own creative touch. So I continued to listen because you could see Howard was jelling with them and it was going to work. Boy was I wrong again.

Howard, Judy and Bob... I will miss you in the morning. I never called into a morning show until I started listening to you. I will not listen to the mix regularly anymore. I wish you guys the best.

Until you surface again my friend and I'll be waiting... cheers!

I just heard today that Mad dog and Billie are taking over the morning show at the Mix! How could they get rid of Humble Howard, Judy and Bob! They made me laugh every morning on my way to work. They are the funniest morning show on the air. I hate when radio stations do this. It was hard enough when Fred left the show. Anyway, I want to wish Howard, Judy and Bob the best of luck and hopfully they'll be back on the radio soon!

Mad Dog and Billie? are they kidding? i'm supposed to wake up to those two. their commercials annoyed me this morning. I will miss Humble greatly but also his amazing partners Judy and Bob - a unique combination of funny and witty individuals who were so genuine i can't imagine anyone not being able to relate to them. It's a sad day in radio. i just emailed the mix to tell them that as well.

Hi Mike (and Howard if you're reading),

This morning show will be sorely missed because of it's humour, great banter and social consciousness. Howard, Judy, Bingo and Fred, I wish you all the best! The last few years have been great and I feel as if I know you and your family, your wife and kids, and hearing them grow up.

So.

For the first time ever, I e-mailed a radio station... and here's what I wrote:
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
I don't know who's going to read this, and I don't usually bother e-mailing
radio stations.

I stopped listening to CHFI after Erin and Bob were canned and replaced with
"Mad Dog" and Billie.

I put "Mad Dog" and Billie on a 2 week probation and I found them stilted,
un-funny and un-imaginative. They were also not socially conscious.

I left CHFI because of that change, and found MIX, Humble & Fred, Bingo and Judy.

I've enjoyed the last three years as a NEW listener, but I will no longer listen
to MIX because "Mad Dog" and Billie are about as appealing as bird flu.

Congratulations, you've lost another listener and probably the demographic
you're looking for.

I'll go back to CBC Radio One now, and make my own playlists on my iPod.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Howard, Judy, Bingo & Fred, where ever your guys are, if you can get back
on the air, I'll be there listening.

I found out this morning that Humble Howard was fired. It is a sad time in radio. As a fan from Buffalo since the early 90's, all I have to say is that there is now no one worth listening to in the morning on either side of the border.

I wish Howard and his family all the best in this bad time. If he doesn't find a gig in the area, I hope he lands somewhere that broadcasts over the web. At least then I can still get my morning fix over my computer.

With his talent, I'm sure he will land on his feet.

Good Luck Howard.

This Sucks!! I have listened to Humble (and Fred) back since they were on CFNY. I was so happy when they came to the Mix. I was upset after Fred got canned last year, but I didn't want to give up on Humble. Now that the Mix has done the same thing to Howard, firing him while on vacation, I won't listen anymore. Best of luck to Howard and the rest of the morning show. Bye Bye Mix!!

When DEAN came on the Edge I new I needed to find another morning show and fast. Humble and Fred were on all talk radio which was okay for a bit but I really needed music in the morning. THEN.... I new where I needed to be in the mornings! NOW...I will miss the Humble Report and the laughter that makes you cry. Best of luck to everyone the Mix let go and best of luck to the listeners in finding something that will get you going in the morning.

I started listening to Howard and his crew just a few months ago. I'm sad that the show ended and his listeners didn't get one last broadcast & that he didn't get a chance to say good-bye. The station made a big mistake in letting him go. Hopefully Mad Dog's show will tank and they'll bring Howard back!

It truly is a sad day in radio. First Fred and now Humble. What is the MIX thinking??? Hopefully the Humble and Fred show will be reunited soon. (along with Judy & Bob) The morning show at the Mix was the only reason I tuned in.
Good luck to Humble, Fred, Judy & Bob. Can't wait to hear you on another station soon.

What a load of sh@t. I just found out Howard and my first reaction were tears. Then to get up, walk to the other side of my office and change the radio station...Back to the Edge. I'm glad to hear that they are giving you that "soft landing" but furious that they have put you in the situation of having to see your children cry. I'm furious, heart broken and completely shocked. You're all they had going for them Howard, and they are going to feel the pinch from this stupid decision that was made without any sort of feedback from your die hard fans. All the best Howard, and please let us ( your fans ) know where you end up. Keep your chin up girls, your daddy is going to be fine, and by listening to him for all these years I know he is going to do what is best for you two.
So sorry Howard....
Take care

Not sure what they think they will be getting with Mad Dog and Billie? Just what the heck does Mad Dog mean anyway? Does he foam at the mouth? You guys were a great team and cracked me right up every morning. And I am the queen of funny, says me, so I consider myself to be an authority. Oh well, time to switch stations. Not very smart on them though. MD and B really are kind of dry and sound kind of phony to me...but hey not my station.

I have been madly searching the web all day to find out what happened to Howard. I am so upset! When I heard the promo for "Mad Dog" and Billie this morning, my blood boiled. The Mix is claiming "This is not your parent's morning show". Give me a break!
Howard, Judy and Bob made my morning drives so enjoyable. I can honestly say I laughed out loud every day.

I am also wondering what will happen to the "Slime that men do" book that was to be published in the fall. It sounded like it was going to be great and it was also for a good cause.

I will definitely not be listening to the Mix anymore and I can only hope that Howard and the gang show up on another station. I don't care what kind of music it is, I will instantly become a fan.

All the best to you Howard and I will be looking out for your return to the public eye (and hopefully ears).

I heard the news this morning, as I was groggily trying to wake up to yet another Monday morning, that the "new" morning show was going to be Mad Dog & Billie - pardon me? Haven't they been canned at every station they've worked at??? As I woke with a start, I told my husband the news and we both groaned - now what station were we going to listen to? We left The Edge because we can NOT stand Dean Blundell (and I agree with Mike - why can't he be the one who got canned???) and all the other stations are crap - I guess we'll have to listen to Jack!

Howard, if you stop by, we wish you and your family all the best - we've listened to you and Fred since you were at CFNY (yes, even that stint on AM radio) and we will miss you tremendously! Judy you also cracked us up and we wish you all the best for the future too. Bingo Bob you were awesome too - we hope something good comes your way as well!

To The Mix - thank you for driving us away from your radio station! We hope that the "new listeners" you hope to track are plentiful because it appears you just lost a whole bunch of "old listeners"!

I heard the announcement on the mix this morning and couldn't believe my ears. I agree with the others who have taken the time to write in, the Mix is going to lose a lot of listeners, myself included. The morning Team of Humble, Judy and Bob are fantastic. They are fun to listen to, generous, caring and socially responsible. Who would think a DJ would invite people to email him, take calls, etc and always have time for anyone who cares to contact him? Do you think Steve Anthony would? Hardly! He's irritating, pompous and arrogant - thinks he's funny, but he'snot. Mad Dog and Billie? I don't think so. I'm looking forward to finding the 'team' wherever they end up and, if they end up on 'pay radio', will gladly pay for the privilege of being entertained by them. Good luck to all, we know you'll be back!

hi howard - i was one of those people who emailed you on your berry and got back a polite but obviously painful message about fred's departure. sorry to hear you're in the same boat. i've been there myself. if you do go back to radio, i'll be here listening. good luck.

but whatever you do, do nothing until september. the one thing i've learned is to enjoy the first few weeks of unemployment, because when you start work again, you'll wish you had.

hey - anyone have any idea what freddie p is doing now?

I'm disappointed with your morning show getting CANNED and yes, getting fired is a very traumatic event. Your first is always the hardest. However you have a grace period of about 3 weeks, after that GET OVER IT. Just use your connections and brains and find another job, or create one for yourself. Stop Crying.

This is what normal people would do or you can go postal.

oh mannnnn... I'm another Google'r who was trying to figure out WTF was up with MadDog & Billie taking over my beloved Howard's morning show time-slot. This really bites, and Mix has lost yet another listener over it.

Howard, all the best to you, your wife and girlies. I've always loved your phone calls to them and was seriously hoping you were all having a kick-ass vaycay to WDW and I couldn't wait to hear all about it! GOOD LUCK :)

July 31, 2006 / 15:43

I can't believe The Mix fired their best DJ?? What demographic are they looking to grow?? It better be big, 'cause they're losing a lot of listeners. And how come the bad DJ's are getting an extended vacation?
Management decisions like these make companies go in the tank.

Hey Humble,

I just heard the news. Please, Please, Please, get together with Fred again and start your own radio station if need be. I've been listening to you guys forever and don't want to think about my morning drive now if I can't have you in it. I wish you well and hope to hear your voice again in the near future.

I'm another listener who has followed Humble & Fred since day one at CFNY. I am also joining the ranks of former MIX listeners. I'm writing in even though I have nothing new to add because I figure the more H&F fans who write to say they will follow Humble wherever he goes the better his job search will go. He can just give any potential employers this website for proof of listenership potential.

I cannot BELIEVE they dumped him!!!

That was the only reason why I tuned into 99.9 in the morning (and I live in Buffalo). that was the best morning crew and their voices did not annoy me as my local personalities do in the morning.

Hi Karen & Wayne,

I can't begin to tell you how very disappointed I am over the Mix's decision to change the morning show. Firstly, you didn't have the decency to let your employee say a proper goodbye to his colleagues & fans. As a professional in the field of human resources, it's obvious to me from interviews and various other radio industry buzz that this "restructuring" was mishandled. Secondly, how do you think it makes your loyal morning listeners (and there are a LOT of us out there! see http://www.mikeboon.com/2006/07/humble_howard_are_you_okay.html ) feel when they aren't even afforded the courtesy of their opinions? You claim to want more listeners, and that this was the reason for your decision. Understandable. However, in actioning this business decision, you have managed to alienate the very listeners you should have been hanging onto in the first place - you know, those of us in our 20s, 30s and 40s with the cash in our pockets that attract those lucrative advertising dollars which sustain your radio station! Your focus should have been to attract more listeners, not lose the ones you already have.

I've heard Mad Dog & Billie. I listened to them during their successful Kiss 92.5 days. They certainly fit that format. Young. Urban. Hip.
They did not fit CHFI. They were too young, urban and hip.
And I can guarantee you that they will not fit Mix 999's format either. See, I'll let you in on a little secret... the problem with the Mix was never with the morning show... Fred Patterson wasn't the one holding you back. And neither was Humble Howard. The fundamental problem with the Mix lies in your music format. Simply put, the music you play SUCKS. Your "More Music. More Variety" slogan sounds great. In theory. Your output, on the other hand, leaves much to be desired. It seems as though every time I tune in to the station, the same limited rotation of songs/artists are being played. Coldplay. Nickelback. Dixie Chicks. Repeat. I know what you're thinking... "why don't you be a Mix Online Music Director?"... I tried it. For a whole year. I gave you loads of bi-weekly feedback on your song selections. Frankly, I've grown grey hairs waiting for you to implement any changes.

I've said it before... I can't begin to tell you how disappointed I am over this program change. I hope you realize the error of your ways and reinstate Humble Howard and his full team. Until that happens though, I guess it's JackFM for me.

It's been nice while it lasted.

Respectfully... Sandy

I was one of those people who woke up on July 17th all excited to hear about the FaRTLif (Family Roadtrip of a Lifetime) and I heard Connie St Clair doing the news and knew something was up... after the second song no Humble... no Judy.... not good.

A buddy and I got through to Maura who passed on the National Post article and heard from Judy Croon at her website and got the story that way. Even though two weeks have passed I have yet to hear of anyone who was glad to hear The Humble Howard Show was off the air. Every comment I've read about Humble, Fred, Bob and Judy is exactly what everyone agrees with. They were great and you really just felt like you were sitting there (or lying there) with friends and getting caught up with their day to day lives - what good friends do.

It is very sad. I'm not listening to any morning show right now opting for my CD's or 680 or 590. It's all better than anything else that's out there. I never listened to Mad Dog and Billie for more than a few moments just flipping one day. They're not the Mix audience and those commercials this morning were nauseating. Remember when the Mix brought in Carla Collins and Steve Anthony for the morning and that Carter and Kim for the afternoon (Kim was the original news reader for Humble and Fred when they moved to the Mix) but the Carter part.... his show was gone within a month. Maybe we can hope that will be the same with this duo. If there was anyway they could wind up on satellite.... sign me up!!!

To Humble - get a website so we can still chat - I even just moved to Oakville! Fred - love the freddiep.ca site.... happy belated 50th! very cool... Judy - you're great and I can't wait to see your standup if I don't hear you on the airwaves first! and Bob - welcome to the 30's... they'll get better!!

Like Ken just said... I don't know what demographic they are looking for - I thought I was it. Apparently, that's my que to say goodbye too.

There are little rituals in the day that reassure a person in the midst of uncertainty that life can be enjoyable. One of mine was listening to Humble Howard. I loved his ability to laugh at himself and the way he connected with people who had never met or seen him. He was the funny guy in your high school class that never grew up and old and managed to convince the rest of us that we hadn't either. Don't get me wrong. He wasn't a saint. Sometimes his politics were a little too right wing for my tastes but that only made him more human. And Judy and Bob provided a great chemistry. Good people. What I want to know is why people who make the termination decisions end up fring their loyal listeners in the process?
I hope your site will let us know where these three genuinely funny radio people will resurface!

Wow, the end of an era... First Jesse and Gene (man I miss those guys) and now Humble and Fred. What is up with radio anyway..? Bring back the good old days when Jesse and Gene would battle Humble and Fred for top morning ratings, that was the day.... But honestly, Mad Dog and Billie, PLEASE, get a grip mix 99.9. Did you do your researd ? Mad Dog and Billie left Kiss FM to go to CHFI, then got canned from there for bad ratings.. ya they will help out Mix 99.9...I don't think so.... time to go Satellite... Good luck Humble...

Having read everything posted to this point, I can not add anything more profound or enlightening than what has already been written. While reading I changed my desk radio to 92.5. On my way home I will change my car to the same. Personally I have been following Humble and Fred for as long as they have been on in the Toronto Market. TV, talk, even bad music ... not just a fan, but I always felt connected ... like they were my friends. Both have replied to my emails over the years. Yes, Friends is what they are, and will forever remain. Here I thought I just had to wait a few weeks of enduring BAD morning shows ... seems Toronto will have to wait until OUR friends get back on the air

I have listened to Humble and Fred since they first came to Toronto. I have chased them from radio station to radio station. I was never one to change stations between songs but as soon as I found out that Humble was gone, I started to look around to other stations. Like many others have said, the Mix has lost me and my family as listeners.

"All our Jocks are off for the summer". Well, that's what what we were told. I guess no-one seen it coming that another MIX chop was coming up. Imagine nailing guys with "you're fired", when you've just returned from vacation.
Way to go MIX.
I'd been listening to Humble, the Kroon and Bob since Fred left and thought I've finally found a station that made me laugh out loud also made me think about issues that were happening around Toronto. I had tried listening to Mike and Erin on that other station and found them boring. (I now find Coop's voice irritating). As for 104.5....well, Roger, Rick and Marilyn just talk way too much and you might get a song every 10 minutes.
Humble and his gang just the right "mix" of songs, banter and information. I met them in March at the $25,000 prize draw and found them to be as nice in person as they were on air. I will miss them and I know there's a hell of a lot more people out there who just haven't posted but will boycott MIX 99.9 as well.
All the best Howard, Judy and Bob. I'm sure you guys will reappear on air at another station, hopefully still together to keep the chemistry going.
Now, let me see....what was JACK FM's frequency again?

Good luck Humble, Judy, and Bob. You were the only reason I tuned in to 99.9. Mix is off my presets.

August 1, 2006 / 09:46

Damn it all. Go on vacation and Howard gets the boot........just like last year with Fred. I thought something was up but it only damned on me yesterday what it might be...........thank god for Google.

Howard, if you are reading this............thanks. You made me laugh and even sometimes cry.

I wish you well and I sincerely hope you, Fred (man do I miss him), Judy and Bingo Bob return.......somewhere other than the MIX.

In the meantime........guess that leaves me with Ted Wolosyn and the old 'RB.

Good luck.

I'm yet another disillusioned Howard, Fred, Judy and Bob fan. I have read all of the previous postings and I find comfort knowing that other listeners have stated what I've been feeling.

Initially, I just thought that the Mix was being kind to its employees by giving them extended vacation time with their friends/families. They even implied that saying "We're not like the OTHER radio stations." How misleading and unfair to their listeners and more importantly, to their former employees.

The radio business is truly strange in that way; much like my bank reps who keep changing without notification to the customer. Whatever has happened to "customer service" in our society?!

I have been a long time listener of Howard and Fred, and of the Mix. Like others, I have tolerated the constant replay of revolving songs simply because I enjoyed listening to certain sexy, calming voices and to the morning show's fun, upbeat humour.

At the risk of repeating so many others, I too would like to wish Howard, Fred, Judy and Bob all the best. Enjoy the rest of summer, if you can, and good luck with your future endeavours.

I will miss your morning show greatly. If the four of you got back together, that would be wonderful. I won't get my hopes up, though. I sincerely hope you each find something that makes you happy and sustains you and your family.

Thank you, Howard, Bob, Judy and Fred, for working so hard and making us laugh in the morning. You have informed us and more importantly, you have entertained us during the most hectic time of the day.

I wish you much happiness and success!

Humble, Judy, Bob....you were the ONLY good part of that station. I wanna know about FARTLIF!!! Was so excited to get into the car on Monday the 17th to hear about the trip and the crazy things that Randy, Charlie and Spencer did. I'll miss the sleepy phone calls to Randy and all your humour and wit! One word for you Humble....SIRIUS. You and Fred should rise together again!!! Good thing I just subscribed because aside from 680 I'm out of a local station!

Kevin
August 1, 2006 / 12:30

Looks like I'm the only one not surprised by this.

I listened to CFNY since Pete & Geets, through Steve Anthony to H&F, followed H&F to 640 and then the Mix. Never liked the music at 999, but couldn't stand Dean. But when Fred "left" it sounded like the morning show was trying to appeal to women: it got softer. Between features like "The Slime that Men Do" and incessant chatter about American/Canadian Idol, I gave up on the show altogether. Well, I returned every day at 7:45 for the Humble Report, but I stopped even that because it grew less topical and more celebrity-focused.

I now tolerate Dean, Todd, and Danger Boy (who's Jason?). The call-in bits are tedious, but Dean has an, um, edge that reminds me of the old Howard.

But I would love H&F to return to the FM dial, play some decent music, and bring back the edgy humour, topical guests, and if it's not too much trouble, Fred's comments. That's all I ask.

Nix the Mix.

Maryanne from Hamilton.
August 1, 2006 / 13:13

I have to add my comment about how shocked and disappointed I am to hear that Howard, Judy and Bingo Bob have been fired. I can't count the number of times I laughed out loud on my way to work in the morning. I won't be listening to the new team, I can tell you that! And I will never forget the great story Humble told about the time he played that song for his daughters;I think of him every time I hear that song! Humble, Judy and Bob--be well and I'll be listening for you!

August 1, 2006 / 13:17

I can't BELIEVE it! I noticed others talking about Jesse and Gene as well as Humble and Fred. I, like many, have jumped from station to station looking for any of these guys. Now Howard is gone too. Guess I will just wait to figure out where he's gonna pop up next - screw the Mix - there is NO WAY I am listening to Mad Dog and Billie. Couldn't stand them on KISS 92 - couldn't wrap my head around how they got on to CHFI - now I have to leave the Mix too because I can't get away from them.

Very disappointed. Bad move MIX - you're losing a whole lotta listeners.

August 1, 2006 / 13:26

Its too bad these radio stations are firing good dj's and blaming them for poor ratings etc. , there is only one reason why ratings are dropping....SATELLITE.

Howard and the crew (including Fred) should really consider moving to salellite and possibly getting a show, these guys uncensored would be great. Nothing too vulgar like STERN, but just enough to make it real...something we could listen to at work.

Kim
August 1, 2006 / 13:38

I'm not alone, I thought I was the only one who was jonesing for the H-H Morning Show. I thought there was something hinky on July 17 when no one was there. I was looking forward to all the details on FARTLIF!!! I sent a note to Bob and his out of office said he'd be back on the 31st. That was yesterday... then I googled Humble Howard, and then I found out. Howard,Judy, Bob, I will miss you. Every day I sat on the GO train from Oakville to Union and laughed out loud. What a great way to spend the morning. All the best, Get a website and keep us posted on your whereabouts. For the record, I will no longer be listening to Mix999.

Kelly
August 1, 2006 / 13:38

I can't believe it... I've listened to Humble and Fred since high school on the old CFNY - remember all the voices Fred did? All the crank calls? "When there's a bluebird singing on your windowpane, and the sun shines bright all day for you .. don't forget boy, look over your shoulder cause there's always someone coming after you ... " ! That song seems a little prophetic now, doesn't it? Humble, we'll miss you. I really enjoyed the banter you had with Judy and Bob (and of course with our dear Freddy P). Steve Anthony does not make for a good morning man - I was so happy to hear when you were on vacation that he was only filling in - he made a terrible VJ too. Turned the TV channel everytime he showed up .. ick .. but there was a bright spot .. Humble Howard was coming back .. now what? You think I was listening to the Mix for it's music?? Sorry, but I can't tune in to Dean Blundel - too disgusting for the morning show (or afternoon, or evening for that matter). After so many years, I will truly miss you guys. You made me laugh, and cry (think of the Sick Kids' marathon - sorry I couldn't listen very long to those - hard to drive when you can't see through tears). I'm just stunned. Mix 99.9 you really screwed up. Humble, I'll follow you wherever you go.

Mike

Hey Kelly, good point about Nikki (I could have done with less of her).

I like that bluebird ditty... also this one (Corky & Juice Pigs?) "It's Humble and Fred (Humble and Fred). It's Humble and Fred (Humble and Humble and) Humble and Fred! They'll walk right up to your Dad... and check out his brand new rake, they're Humble and Humble and Fred.

Good times.

Kelly
August 1, 2006 / 14:30

Kevin, the Bluebird ditty was from the old Humble and Fred segment "Mr. Goohead" .. not sure if they did that stint on the Mix or if it was from CFNY, but certainly a favourite .. :)

August 1, 2006 / 14:43

Well i have read all of the posts here as well. I am sending an e-mail to the mix right now to let them know i am not happy. I hope Humble & Fred reappear somewhere. Wherever they do i will find them.

August 1, 2006 / 15:27

Well...the Mix has lost another listener. I won't support a station that clearly dosen't know what entertainment is. I have spent many a morning laughing out loud listening to Humble and crew. I don't ever remember another team that has made me laugh so much. You guys will be missed greatly. What are they thinking bringing in Mad Dog and Billie? Pretty tasteless in my books. Good luck to you Howard, Judy, Bob and of course Freddie P. I will tune in again once I know where you are! :0)

August 1, 2006 / 16:12

Wow, way to go MIX.
Thanks Mike for hosting this, and thank god for Google.

Interesting, MIX says it's losing listeners and trying to grab more of another demographic.... Didn't MIX listeners break all records for raising money for Sick Kids? Wasn't that awesome?!

I started a new job just over a year ago that involved a lengthy commute each day. At first it was unbearable but then I found the morning show and found great comfort in Humble, Fred, Judy and Bingo Bob. The Humble report was always pretty silly but I looked forward to it each day none the less, it also helped me determine whether I was late for work depending on where I was when it came on.
Compared to many of you I am a very new listener but with the morning crew gone (fired in such a disturbing manner) I as well will now look to satellite radio and CD's for my drive.
Thanks for the morning chats guys! All the best!

I just wanted to say that I have listened to Humble and Fred for many years and followed them to each station they moved to. At one point between their moves, I listened to Mad Dog and Billy and couldn't be happier to leave.. Mad Dog wasn't funny and Billy was just downright stupid. No consideration to anyone that was listening. I don't even find her funny, just annoying.

I have switched my radio station to something I don't even remember after I leave the house. Desparately seeking a station... Where are you Humble Howard!!!!

Howard if you are reading... You will be greatly missed as you can see from the above.

Mix 99.9 and Mad Dog and Billy - No way.. not happening.

August 1, 2006 / 17:31

Well not much I can add to this great blog.
but MIX..you really missed the boat on this one.

Maybe you should look at replacing Steve???

I could only listen to the morning show. It was great. the rest is where you lost your listeners.

The only good thing is I will never have to again hear

"if it wasnt for you being out there..there would be no reason for me being in here"

Your night time listenership is what was down......

good luck.. you will need it with MD & B ....

Kelly, thank you for reminding me of the Mr. Goohead theme song. Hearing it in my head makes me smile.

As I mentioned here, I listened to the Humble and Fred Show mornings on CFNY for over a decade. It was the radio program I awoke to during my formative years. I enjoyed their folksy charm, sense of humour and the tunes played in between. Throughout the 90s there was no better Toronto radio show in the mornings.

This page got me thinking. Blogging is definitely social. Humble is aware of this page and I'm certain he's checking in. Your voices will be heard. Thank you for sharing.

August 1, 2006 / 19:09

I want Howard, Fred, Judy Croon, and Bob to join forces to develop their own show. This means they have no boss, but the listeners feedback via phone and e-mail. Howard, I think that you should brainstorm with your other collegues and start making phone calls with your numerous contacts. Not sure, if the show should be on tv or radio, but gain consistent fans (that you already have) while you are in the spotlight. Kick some 99.9 a** blow them out of the water. I'm thinking late night talk show host (but have a structured and organized program format to utilize your talents) where you can interview the big stars and the up & coming ones too.
Anyways, food for thought...and best wishes.

It's comforting to know there are some many people out there that feel the same way I do. Humble and Fred were like family to me. I looked forward to listening to them every morning on my drive to work. I have a hard time understanding how the ratings for their show could be so low. Where do they get their figures from anyway?? I couldn't believe my ears the day I heard that Fred was gone. I actually shed a tear or two. And now Humble too?? I just keep hoping that they will be back together on the air soon. I need my morning laughter! I can't handle the lame attempts of humour from the other stations.

I'm sad to here that the show is gone :( I first listened to H&F about 8 years ago give or take.

I wont be tuning into the Mix anymore.

Well, the Mix announced a "Summer Vacation" during which the DJs were off...This was the perfect opportunity to make changes and improve the station. So, what did they do? They got rid of the only solid DJ on the station and kept, of all people, Steve Anthony! I expect that the people running the Mix should be experts but, I think they've gone the wrong way on this one. Get rid of Steve and bring Humble back...That would be a start!

Add another former mix listener to the list. Howard, I hope I can tune into your show again on another spot on the dial.

Sorry to hear the news....I've been a listener since you went on the air at 99.9 and this blows. You, Judy and Bingo made up a great morning crew.Looks like Mix is going to loose another listener. You hang in there buddy.I'll miss your wifes nointy-noin noin saying.

I have to say I am very disappointed. I have been a loyal fan of Howards since his days at 102.1 and then Mojo Radio. In my opinion Humble and Fred were the best morning show ever. I adjusted to Fred being gone but I can't imagine not starting my day listening to Howard. He is the sole reason why I started listening to the Mix in the first place.

As for Mad Dog and Billie ..... I wouldn't listen to them if my life depended on it. Time to find a new radio station.

If you're reading this Howard, know that your fans love you and support you. Until your next venture...

I give Mad Dog and Billie a year at the most. Not a good move. by the way what's with the "Mad Dog" name? Isn't that a bit juvenile

It was a very sad Monday morning this week. Figured something was up when Howard didn't return from his vacation.

I will miss listening to Howard, Judy & Bob every morning on the way to work. I will no longer listen to the Mix no matter what time of day it is.

680 News or CDs it is!

Howard, Judy & Bob, all the best. Hope to hear all of you, + Fred on another station real soon!

When the MIX realizes the error in their ways and offer all of you your jobs back, tell them to go to hell!

Another ex-Mix listener. Have been reading the comments on this page since the first day the team disappeared from the air. Will miss them all, and hoping for a return somewhere shortly.

Not sure what the Mix was thinking with this move, that would be assuming that they were. They're not going to gain any ground on Chum or Chfi with this new team. Also not sure why you would really want a younger audience, not too many advertisers are ready to dump a bucket of cash into that demographic. I smell a change of format coming.

*sigh* even sadder (and probably adding insult to injury) is when I heard Maura Grierson saying how happy! and excited!! she was that MD & B were coming to the Mix!!! Sorry, sounds a little sugary and unbelievable to me ...

My letter to the programming director...

Dear Ms Steele;

If Mike Boon's blog is anything to go by, I'd say you're likely getting a lot of "fan feedback" regarding your decision to let Humble, Judy and Bob go.

I'm sorry that you felt the need to make that change. I was fired recently - I was told after I relocated 250km and moved away from my family, got a house and started to settle into my new community. Six months after I started the job that moved me so far from home, I was told that I just "didn't fit in" in the office.

The reason I'm telling you that is because the one thing that held constant for me as I moved, was my morning radio show. I listened to Humble and Fred, and then Humble, Judy and Bob back home and then when I moved east of Toronto, I was happy that I was still close enough to you to enjoy their morning show as I got ready in the morning and on my drive in to work. It was comforting. When I was let go, I listened to them as I searched for a new job. I really enjoyed their humor - the way they made me laugh and I didn't have to put up with any crude comments, any disrespectful language. I really enjoyed the way they worked together, they were 'happy' to listen to. They made me happy. When they were raising money for sick kids they often made me cry - but it was a good cry.

Thinking about it, I've listened to Mix 99.9 since before I was in college. I remember trying not to be offended by Freeway Frank when he was on late at night, I remember thinking 'at least they've got a good morning show'. After college, the only time I really listened to the radio consistently was in the morning. And your morning show was good. With Humble and Fred your morning show was *really* good. When Humble, Judy, and Bob hit their stride, the morning show became fantastic, and I found myself waking up earlier just to listen longer.

The Humble Howard Morning Show had the perfect chemistry, it was humor I could share with my fiancee, jokes I could share at work, and stories I could repeat to my parents. It made me happy to listen. It wasn't about the music, it was about the hearts of the people playing it.

I hope the team lands on their feet. I hope they end up working for another radio station that is within range of where I live now. I know I'll be looking for them, because my dial certainly won't be pausing near 99.9 anymore.

Good luck with your decision, I hope it works out for you.

Sincerely,

T M

Wow. The mix wants a "younger" demographic? I truly enjoyed the H+F Show and I'm only 26....Maybe that's too old for them.

As everyone else has already said.......MAD DOG WHO?? I followed Humble (& Fred) to the Mix and I will continue to follow them wherever they go. It's very disappointing that they don't give people a chance to say goodbye or offer an explanation. Good luck with your listenership Mix, it's going to tank out even worse now!!!

Just wanted to drop off my comments too ~

I felt like something was up early, and spent ages on the 'net looking for confirmation or denial. I've listened to H&F since the beginning, and if i'm at all lucky we'll all be listening to them, Judy and Bob again soon.

I can't add much that hasn't been said, so i won't bother trying too much. My wife was pissed when she found out, and that's given me the chance to throw my money down on XM until we hear something about the fella's (and Judy, of course).

I'll miss everyone from the show while they're gone though... thanks for the memories .. (Anyone else remember the *flush* from that first move? It brought a smile for me then, and it'll do much the same now, i think. As 'in-jokes' go, Feddy P's Toilet Comment said it all...)

Be well guys.

August 2, 2006 / 18:41

It's hard to believe with all this feedback, that it wouldn't make a difference to the Mix. I think they have really screwed up big time. I can't believe I've written the station a dozen times, read all of this blog and actually teared up at the thought of Humble, Fred & Judy being history. That just goes to show what a part of our lives they have become. Mix has screwed up royally, I'm in the market for a new station. Madd Dog and Billy have big shoes to fill - I don't think they're up for the job.

No more filling out on-line music survey's - they were a pain, but I was grateful at the chance to offer input. If input REALLY mattered, Humble, Fred & Judy would still be on the morning show.

Goodbye Mix

Chris

Alex
August 2, 2006 / 20:30

Howard, I'll miss you and your possee in the AM. I don't get it. Your morning show was the only reason I tuned in to the Mix at all... DESPITE the crap music played on the station. Unbelievale that management doesn't get it that the reason for low ratings is the crap music, not your morning show. Screw 'em!
IPOD, here I come!

August 2, 2006 / 22:20

What can I say that hasn't already been posted - except that you can add my name as another disappointed 99.9 listener. Actually I only became a 99.9 listener when Humble and Fred made the move there. I was shocked when it became the Humble Howard morning show but still listened every morning. Let me emphasize morning because the dial changed in the afternoon. Now there's no reason to listen so my presets will be changed. I hope that Humble (and Fred?) land in another spot soon and that the word spreads quickly to those of us who have been loyal listeners so I don't have to keep searching and wondering.

I heard one of the ads for Mad Dog and Billie today and it made me both sad and angry. One of the comments was something like "we don't sound like parents doing a morning show". Was that a shot at Humble? I loved it when he told stories about his kids and when he called them up.

I am so disappointed. I switched from CHUM FM to the Mix because I couldn't stand Roger, Rick and Marilyn anymore. I found that I really enjoyed Howard in the morning and now he is gone!! Well, the MIX has just lost another listener. I hope Howard will show up on some other station, that will become my new favourite station. Thanks for all the laughs Howard.

Lisa
August 2, 2006 / 23:34

Another fan of Humble, Bob and Judy who is extremely pissed about how this has happened. And another former Mix listener -- won't tune in now, no matter how much I hate Roger, Rick and Marilyn.

Mad Dog and Billie? Please. Dumb ass and whiny spoiled chick - haven't they been fired from every station they've worked for??? Ummm...maybe there's a reason? They suck ass!!!

Jenn
August 2, 2006 / 23:42

I just returned from my summer vacation all set to listen to my one and only morning show. I can't stand Steve Anthony and was so looking forward to hearing about Humble Howard's Vacation. Then, the devastating news! And what is with Mad Dog and Billie? What radio station haven't they been fired from? I have erased the Mix from my programmed list, and now search for another show to fill the gap. I hope Humble and Fred return to the air soon! Good luck to Howard, Judy and Bob. You have a huge fan base and I know you will land on your feet. As for the MIX, you lost another listener. I doubt that you care, but I am in the younger demographic. Not sure who it is you want to listen? You might want to do something about Steve Anthony and Freeway Frank and the repititive song choices.

August 3, 2006 / 00:01

A few months ago I started a new job that requires me to work steady afternoons. Waking up just as the Humble Howard show was ending, I was suffering from withdrawal symptoms - asking myself - I wonder what Humble, Judy & Bob talked about today? Did they read my "Slimey Men" story on air? Are they sharing great soup or dip recipes that I didn't get?? Am I missing out on all the fun??? aahhhhh I was going crazy!!! I was just about to rig up some way to tape the whole show from beginning to end to get my fix of GOOD RADIO & A GUARANTEED LAUGH when BAM! - this happens! what the hell is the MIX thinking?

Like many of you I am also a loooong time listener of the Humble & Fred team... even received my official Humble & Fred stock (which might have been the last one issued cause they nixed that soon after I got it - hhhmmmm I wonder what it's worth now??) I enjoyed the fact that if Humble, Judy & Bob were talking about something, they welcomed our calls & comments and they actually picked up the phone to talk to us... that's what made them feel like family... there was a 2-way conversation happening - you weren't just being talked TO but rather talking WITH them...

well what to do now? I guess just hope and pray with the rest of you that some smarter radio station jumps on this opportunity and picks them up... and perhaps call in to ummmm what's their names? Mud Dog and Boobie? and tell them on-air how much THEY SUCK!!! tee hee hee... wouldn't that be funny if we ALL did that!! *evil grin*

p.s. to MIX 99.9 - YOU SUCK!!! oh yeah - and it's not really a MIX if it's played 10 times a day!!

p.p.s. to Howard - if you're reading this, please email me re: the book cause I had an idea for another one for charity that I wanted to chat to you about and it would be more appropriate now than ever...

The recycling of radio hosts is not new to Toronto and sadly, I am getting a bit desensitized to it. We have seen it before with Erin Davis from 98.1(CHFI) in 2003 after 15 years of service who then left to join Mike Cooper on 97.3 (EZ Rock) in 2004 and then both Erin and Mike returning back to CHFI in 2005; John Oakley of AM640 who prior to 2003 used to work at the rival CFRB station; Bill Carroll of CFRB who prior to this worked at both AM640 and Q107. It seems there is a pool of on-air talent that Toronto stations are allowed to pull from. Here are some others who have also been recycled, Bob Christie, John Derringer, Stu & Colleen and once again Mad Dog & Billie.
In radio, formats change all the time. Often their strategy is to attract a larger audience, keep up the motivation and creativity. I imagine that these things are crucial to morning radio.
The thing that I get from reading the comments that have been flying in since Mike first asked, “ Humble Howard, are you okay ” is that Howard definitely delivered creative jumpstarts to his listeners day. He definitely had a captive audience as reflected by the genuine outpouring of fans in this forum. I believe Howard will definitely be okay and as Mix 99.9 changes their format, fans will follow Howard to his next destination to continue to spend time with the person who makes them laugh and to hold onto the special moments that he has shared in their lives. Time will tell in the years to come how memorable and productive these format changes are.

When I moved to Toronto a year and a half ago one thing that kept me grounded from all the stress of moving, getting used to my new job, and being away from my familiy was listening to the Mix. I fell in love with the morning show immediately, and that's big for me considering that I am NOT a morning person. My bf then moved to Toronto just before the whole controversy of Fred began. Dispite our disappointment, we continued to listen to the morning show because the team was such a solid team: Howard, Judy, Bob.

Our morning routine always consisted of listening to The Humble Report. We loved hearing Howard's wife and children come on the radio, hearing of all the great things the crew participates in (Ping Ping for lunch thing, Sick Kids, etc), and all the crazy things they talk about at ungodly times of the morning. Now, with not one, but ALL of them gone, rest assured that I will no longer be tuning in to The Mix anymore. They were the reasons I chose The Mix in the first place.

If all of this change is to attract new listeners, what are the plans to retain the veteran listeners? Is losing the loyal Humble and Crew listeners worth the new listeners that you may or may not be attracting?

mix has definelty lost our family - oh, howard...we miss you and your stuff. I was so looking forward to hearing about the Road trip of a life time. I kept listening to hear when you'd be back and when my daughter clued into what was happening, not to sound meladramatic, but I felt empty. I'm so mad - You guys kept me going through a hard year. (I still miss Fred's recipes) Mix no longer exists in my car or at home....I can't wait until you and the gang find a brand new location....we'll be there!!

Great job Mix. Way to boost your ratings. Hire the two people that have already failed on other stations. You might as well have hired a couple 13 year olds. the level of maturity is comparable.

So here's how I figure it went down: "Hey, our playlists are pretty much Coldplay and that new song by Mobile... and there's too much advertising... nothing to draw in young people... what else can we do to screw ourselves over??" "Oh Oh I know! Let's get rid of the only funny or even remotely edgy thing keeping this station from being freaking CHFI and then watch as our station sinks!!" "I LIKE it. You have a big future in this company kid." Then they all sat around eating donuts and laughing like those crazy old rich guys in movies, while sprikles spew out of their mouths.

I'm of the generation that outgrew Mad Dog and Billie when we were eleven, so the execs are about a DECADE behind the times. Looks like the Edge now has no competition in the 'pre-set wars' in the car. Don't worry Howard-- Toronto fans are intense about their radio and I'm sure you'll be back on your feet soon!

Wendy
August 3, 2006 / 11:58

Howard I can't beleive it. I'm crushed. I switched to the Mix during Mat. leave. The only time I could listen to the radio was Saturday morning on my long drive up north and the best of Humble and Fred was my connection to morning radio.

My suggestion to everyone is to write the mix and protest by not listening.

After CHFI realized that loosing Erin Davis was one of the biggest mistakes they ever made they hired her back. Maybe we can force them to do the same with Humble. (I don't know if he would go back???? But isn't it worth a shot.)

Howard we miss you and let us know if you find another station beacuse it is very clear that all of us will be there!

August 3, 2006 / 12:09

Well, the stats are in. Humble and the gang (including Fred) are missed. No reason left to listen to morning radio. Good luck to all. Hope some station out there is reading this -- get the team back on in the mornings. Instant ratings!

Humble and Fred was the best show on that station. There's no way he (and the others) should've been let go, but I guess that's radio. Hey Mix why don't you hire "Tarzan Dan" and make it a an even bigger disaster

August 3, 2006 / 13:43

Why is it always so easy for management to fire people because sales or productivity isn't as good as they would like, instead of finding where the problem is and working with the people at hand to find a solution? Oh, sorry, that would involve them actually having to put out some energy! (Oh, I'm sorry, did that seem bitter?)I have been listening to the Mix in the morning and was just about to email them to ask "What is with this horrible early morning music? Every song is about feeling so bad, gonna feel bad, wanna feel bad or goona make someone else feel bad." Then I wondered "Hey, where's Humble? He's been gone forever!" And, when I googled about Humble, I found, "Yes, yes he has gone forever." Well, Mix 99.9, I have been an avid listener for years. My first disappointment was when you fired Fred, and now Humble. So, Mix 99.9....You're fired! As of today, you are written off my radio list. Fool me once...shame on you. Fool me twice....shame on me!

Listening to the Humble Howard Morning show was always a great start to my day! When Fred left i was upset, but adjusted to having just Howard. Howard, you said it how it is, and always got a laugh out of us. When you did not come back from vacation i was upset and that was all i was talking about. I even called MIX and gave them a big mouthfull! I am sure i was not the only one. Please keep us posted with an update on how you are doing. I am no longer going to be listening to the MIX there is no point!

Humble, the mix will never be the same (you were the MIX!). You are what made driving in traffic every morning bearable... Drivers of Toronto beware... Humbles no longer on the air!!! August 3, 2006 / 19:34

Apparently after reading all of these comments, Humble Howard is more than popular in Toronto! The Mix need to sort themselves out, because it seems to me that they are losing more listeners than they are going to gain by "laying off" Humble. Humble Howard, Judy and Bob are the only people who can actually make my mornings in traffic enjoyable, and like others, I was awaiting their return from vacation with eager ears. Naturally I was very upset on the 17th when the whole "summer vacation" started, and even more annoyed when they announced "Mad Dog and Billie". Yet another listener moving on - it's just crappy that every other morning show in Toronto sucks! Hope everything works out for the three of you, and I will be listening for you to come back with the most kick ass morning show Toronto will ever hear!
Cheers

They say laughing is so good for you. Some days I'm so blue, that Humble Howard was the only person who would make me laugh all day (and he would make me laugh several times every morning).
I couldn't wait until the DJ's came back from "their vacation" this summer. I've been missing Humble so much, I was going to start getting up at 5:30 just so I'd be able to hear the whole show (when he gets back). Too bad MIX was lying! I'm very disappointed to hear Humble (&Fred) were fired. I'm not listening to the Mix anymore. The music was starting to suck anyway. The good DJ's were the only thing that made it worth staying. And Humble, you were the best, you are the best. I hope you re-surface on the radio. In the mean time, I've found a new interest in CBC. I guess that's where I'll turn.
I'll sure miss the laughs though. :o(

To the Mix 99.s--t.
You are just scrambling. I don't believe you know what you're doing at all! And your method of firing people just coming back from, or going on vacation is pathetic.Firing Howard when he was at Disneyland with his kids! Bob and his lovely bride Laura were just a day away from going on a long awaited vacation to Europe. Mix 99.s--t you really do stink.I'm disgusted.

Like others before me have said...I'm switching back to CHUM, maybe even back to CHFI - stopped listening to that when they canned Erin Davis and haven't found my way back since her return, I've enjoyed Humble and Judy & Bob too much. Guess it's time to make that change. It sucks, but the Mix has left me no other choice....I teach Kindergarten and don't have to deal with the immaturity of likes of Madd Dog and Billie.

Dave
August 3, 2006 / 21:34

I heard a MIX ad that Mad Dog & Billie will be on in the morning next week. As I say in one post in my blog "GOOD RIDDANCE MIX!" And I also phoned the number they gave on air(416-323-5420)telling them(Mad Dog & Billie)though no disrespect meant no Humble Howard means I won't be listening to their program. Yes, I really did phone and tell them why they won't have me as a listener.
I've been a loyal Humble & Fred listener since their EDGE days and wherever Humble & Fred go is the station I tune into(I even listened to crappy MOJO Radio just because Humble & Fred were there).
Besides, it would've been nice if MIX had the guts to give advance notice to loyal Humble Howard listeners that he won't be there anymore.

August 4, 2006 / 03:09

NIX the MIX for sure, we need wit not twits!!!! The commercials for Mad Dog & Billie are MORE than enough to ensure I remove 99.9 from my preset buttons....
Can't chance having to hear even a moment of that.

Plus, I never got a free MIX Humble & Fred condom. lol

Best Wishes to you and your family Howard, you will be sadly missed.
I hope to hear you and Fred back together sometime soon.

I heard that Y108 in Hamilton are interested in bringing back the Humble and Fred show. If there's any truth to that e-mail the station and let them know how you feel.

August 4, 2006 / 10:12

Well,

What to say?

It was very helpful to read Howard’s article on his recent experience.

Like the legions before me on this post, I too will be another person who steps away from 99.9 because of this event. Wonder if these folks have already recognised their mistake?

In all of the cities I have lived, I have to say that the Humble Howard radio show impressed me the most. Actually, I did not recognise how good the Humble and Fred show was until after I returned to Toronto last year... and then it was not the same but the version on was still great! I have been a loyal listener since my first week back. Sadly, it only took me a couple of years to figure out I had missed a lot while in Toronto the last time when I had not listened to H&F.

So what happens now? For me, I will totally change my car and home radio listening habits.

For Howard, I predict time will show this unexpected change of job locations will result in a better situation(only when he, and only he, is ready for it).

Best of luck, Howard! I look forward to discovering what you do in the next chapter of your life.

You are one impressive radio professional! Congrats for this accomplishment!!

Know you will have a very fine weekend enjoying the time with your family and close friends.

Well Humble I will miss you...I went back to 99.9 when you started, not sure where I will go now. I was "let go" from a company a year ago after 25 years of hard work and dedication. It is interesting how those hard won business relationships are gone in an instant. Well there is life after getting the boot. Its a great time to re-evaluate what is important in your life, what means the most and to remind yourself that work is a means to an end.

I missed Fred, and I will miss you. I enjoyed not only your sense of humor but also your sense of family. You will show up somewhere and I promise to find you. Thanks for all the mornings you woke me up.

No matter what remember your sense of slef...that's what's important. Enjoy the summer, hug your kids and love your wife. Take care the Universe will give you what you want and what you need. K

I can't believe the MIX thought for a second that firing the BEST part of their station was going to help matters. The music has definitely gone downhill over the past couple of years, and I'm not going to put up with it anymore if there is no Humble and Fred Show. I may even just set my cellphone alarm to wake me up, because I will never find another morning show that is even half as good. Especially by having his wife and kids speak on the show on occasion, I felt that us as an audience could connect with Howard on a personal level. It really felt as though it was one of our friends on the radio, not just some DJ whom we knew nothing about. I know it is just a matter of time before another station picks up the team--hopefully the whole team--and I know I'd follow them anywhere that my clock radio can pick up from Hamilton. The MIX really dropped the ball with this one. I hope the whole team knows that if the MIX wasn't attracting new listeners, it had nothing to do with them, it was the music. Any station that picks them up will be lucky. They'll gain truckloads of loyal Humble and Fred fans, and maybe attract new ones. I won't say any clichés as I'm sure you've heard them all but I certainly send my best to Howard and his family and the rest of the team's families as well.

Now what the #$#$ am I going to do. I wake up to Howard every morning - my drive into work is long enough - Howard made it awesome - I would sing, laugh, call in, win a lunch for the office. I LOVE HOWARD. Howard if you are reading this, please let us know which radio station you are at and I will certainly convert and I am sure many others would.

My friends joke that it is the Humble Howard and Linda show.

I have been sending emails to 99.9 since July 17th - WHERE IS HUMBLE HOWARD????

All I kept thinking was "Shouldn't Humble be back from Florida by now" and then I heard Mad Dog and Billie were taking that time slot and I thought "did I just hear that correctly" so I googled it and found the national post's article. How devastating....what a huge mistake the Mix has made. Humble, Judy and Bob (& Fred)were the best!! I know that I will not be listening to Mix anymore.

Did Mr. Holiday really say: ("Howard's a really good guy," "I feel really bad about it. It's kind of a drag.") Is he for real???? What a @#%!*#ing creep!!! When I heard about how humble's family reacted I cried my eyes out and to read Mr. Holidays quote saying it's "kind of a drag". WOW....unbelievable!!! ....just sounds really cold to me.....what a BIG jerk! I'll never listen to the Mix again!

Well like most of you I am in the same boat. No Humble Howard means no Mix 99.9 for me. I guess it's back to Am 640 for me. Mix 99.9 sucks.

Well, just like everyone else here, I'm shocked. I actually just got back on line and one of the 1st things I did was google humble howard. I'm shocked! I became a mix listener around Christmas as I was sick of 104.5 and found the mix morning show really enjoyable, funny, and many of my friends also listened which gave us something to talk about. I really missed the show in July and now have no morning show to listen to. Mix, you made a very bad decision. You just lost yet another listener.

I'm one of the many of you that has followed Howard (and Fred) with each station move. When finding out that they turfed Fred, I just had this horrible feeling that they would bide their time and let go of Howard as well. In reading the entries here, the one that made me laugh was the letter from Sandy to the Mix along with the response. Just shows how what the radio station thinks of their listeners.

Bingo Bob - best of luck - just saying your name makes me smile.

Judy - I have been a huge fan since following you around Yuk Yuk's. Even now thinking about your Pacer makes me laugh.

Howard - you are such a talented radio personality and we can't wait to find you at your new media post. Besides your obvious radio talent, you are a wonderful man. The work that you have done for your community is far beyond what others do.

There is no amount of antacid that could help me stomach Mad Dog and Billie.
I'm loading up the ipod as well speak. Buh-bye Mix.

hey mike
wow. It's amazing what your blog has been generating. I just want to thank everyone who has been voiceing their support for Judy, Bob and me. Much appreciated. We all got together last night at Bingo's and drank like Canadians and laughed and bitched and moaned and parted ready to move on. We will keep in touch and hopefully soon I'll be able to let you all know how you can keep up with me on my own site.

Mike thanks so much for having a place that allows me to hear from so many great people and keep up the awsome work here at Toronto Mike. If you want here's a reprint of my latest National Post article in case you have some space to fill.

TORONTO NORTH !
For years I used to look sideways at the people who would trek “Up North” every weekend. I thought it was ridiculous to get on the 400 or 401 and leave a perfectly good city to go sit around some lake and get eaten by bugs while cooking burgers outdoors and sleeping in drafty huts. I know I know it’s a tradition around here cause you all grew up going to your grandparents leanto or some Muskoka Camp, but I’m from Moose Jaw and we didn’t really “summer on the lake” as much as we just took a couple month break between snow storms.
Well, I’m in. I’m now officially a Torontonian because I freaking love it up there.
I’ve lived here for 17 years but it wasn’t until about 4 summers ago that I started to slowly assimilate.
We rented a cottage…small cabin, nice lakefront-trees, loons and campfires.
I liked it. My kids loved it. I began to see.
Next summer we rented again, and we visited some friends and stayed overnight at their place. Hey this was fun. Warm days, boating, swimming, checking out little towns, everyone happy and laughing and starting to drink at noon!
“These people couldn’t be from Toronto”, I thought, we don’t act like this a few hours south of here.
That’s the key. We are different when we’re in the big city. “Up North” we don’t have to run at full impulse power, up here we slow down. After the drive that is.
The Drive.
Friday afternoon, the mad dash to get the hell out of town. That’s the part I could never get my head around, but like the rest of the city, I’ve learned to endure.
I used to mock my friends.
“Oh yeah, that sounds great, let’s just park on the 400 for 3 and half hours and then the fun begins?”
Well that was before I became Cottage Boy. Now the drive is just part of the deal and as soon as it’s over and I’m looking out on a lake, it’s forgotten.
Like a lot of you we rent a little place on a lake every year and a few other times a summer we are Cottage Glommers.
You may be unfamiliar with that name but believe me you know the concept. Cottage Glommers are Toronto people who don’t own their own place but Glom onto their friends that do. It’s a real HogTown tradition.
This past weekend we glommed at the family cottage of our friends Stinky and Lou Lou. (Not their real names!) They have a sweet place they share with Lou Lou’s parents Ed and Diane (Their real names) that has been in the Lou Lou family for nearly 80 years. The trick to successful Glomming is to be The PG. That’s the perfect guest to you non-glommers. I’m not completely clear on all the rules but they include not breaking things, bringing your own pillows, cleaning up after yourself and come with plenty of snacks and booze! We had a great time which included Stinky’s amazing ribs, my kids tubing, throwing sticks for his dog Hogan and hours just staring out at the lake.
That’s the part I’m just starting to get. The peacefulness and serenity. Sometimes you can just be sitting on a dock, staring out at nothing and everything at the same time and then it all makes sense. We reside in Toronto for a lot of reasons- the pace, the people the opportunities but every weekend or so we get out of the city and we’re just a bit different. For 48 hours we slow down and become something besides our big city selves. The week’s traffic and deadlines and noises and running around all melt away if only for a short time, but that’s what makes it so special.
I get it.
That’s why we all can’t wait to get up there every Friday…it let’s us not be from Toronto for a while.

I just got off the phone with Howard. He's given me his personal email address and I have permission to share it.

Please continue to leave your comments but let me know if you want me to email you his addy.

Hey Howard! I'm the Managing Director of Crosswinds.net (sounds tropical, but we're really situated in Toronto!) a professional CANADIAN domain webhost. I would like to offer you your own account here, and help you get going on your own site. Least I can do for my favorite morning guy! YOU were the reason I tuned in to the Mix, and now you're the reason it's being yanked from my pre-sets on my stereo and in my car. Those dolts don't know what they've done.

Anyway - contact me and we'll chat about your account. Whatever I can do to help, I'm here for you. Or maybe Mike can contact me with your email address and I'll fire off (oops poor choice of words there, sorry) the info to you.

I'm still getting over the loss of Fred a year ago...i guess that the mix hasn't quite figured out that it's Steve Anthony they should have canned...I change the channel each and every time I hear his erratic, disjointed and unintelligent murmurings ...wow, since I didn't listen to the mix in the aft because of steve, and now have no reason to listen to the mix in the morning, i guess it'll be channel surfing for me!!!
Howard, Judy and Bob - hang in there...when one door closes, another always opens!! There is a reason for everything.

I don't want to sound arrogant by posting this but I thought I should since some people are posting due to their anger towards Humble's firing.

Let's go through some facts. The morning show didn't have ratings. The music was bad yes, but they didn't have ratings. Where were all of you? When HH needed you?

Standard owns Sirius with CBC, which means, don't be surprised if HH does turn up there. However, it's highly unlikely.

Humble and Standard left on good terms. He gets an amazing pay from what I hear for 2-3 more years. He is such a talent he'll probably be picked up before then. Don't worry about him and his family..Bob and Judy, different story.

Why didn't Humble quit when Fred was fired? Job, living; he couldn't. I read a funny post that suggested the other djs should quit. Won't happen. Whether they play polka, classical, jazz or whatever, they are on air pros. That's their job. The nature of the radio business.
People lose their jobs.

Before you post mean comments toward Maddog and Billie, or speak like you know what you're talking about, do some research. There's a lot of bad information out there.

No, I don't work for the company. No, I don't know Humble. But I am a radio fan and you all need to give Mix a chance and understand why they did this.

Response to Scott.

I think that most people on this site are aware of what occurs in business, as most of us have been through the same or had friends and/or family in this same situation, which makes it that much more personal. I also believe that we are using this site as a vehicle to express our feelings and emotions, which may lead to negative feelings to the new morning hosts, however unfounded that they may be in some cases. On top of that, a lot of people are using this site as a portal to speak to Bingo, Judy, Humble, and also Freddie. I think some people will take a listen to the new morning show to form their own opinion, and others will choose not to. If they do work out for the station, then good for them, I'm almost certain that at that point the H&F&J&B show would do two or threefold better.

You are correct on > If I worked closely with my best friend and he was let go.... I wouldn't be offering myself up for a sacrifice given that I had a family to support (which I think they may have been expecting HH to do based on hearing about some of the dysfunctional workings of that station).

I guess all I really want to say is that the posts that you see regarding MD&B are based on the past shows that they have had on Toronto stations. We aren't hoping that MD&B fail, but are just unsure of the decision to bring them to the Mix to replace the show that we are all mourning.

Very Sad! Humble, you will be missed as Freddie P is. I've listened from the beginning - grown up with you guys, had my own kids, cared about sick kids and cared about all the great things you've done over the years for your listeners and the city of Toronto. I've laughed and cried, and laughed 'till I cried. Wherever you turn up next, I'll be there. I only hope this gives you the chance to reunite with Fred.

Mix - shame on you.... shame. You've underestimated your listenership... again.

August 5, 2006 / 00:05

Sorry Scott B.

But the reality is that everyone posting here is a fan of Humble Howard. We are all feeling pain because he will be missed. Trying to adjust to another radio station isn't working...at least not for me.

As far as ratings...everyone looks for someone to blame or a way out. Humble the cause of bad ratings or not capable of getting the ratings up in my opion is false. Who you gonna blame, the guy running the station???

They would play some music on that station and I personally would suffer through the song and I wouldn't change the station just to continue to listen to the morning show. It was only when the show was over it would be "till we hook up again tomorrow" and I would change the station. Just didn't like the music being played there.

Now beating up on Maddog and Bellie well I'm with you on that one but only because I haven't heard them or paid much attention to them before. And if they play the same music at 99.9 I won't know who they are now. But my understanding is there are people out there that have heard of them and to be honest they don't enjoy there style of entertainment. If they want to express themselves so be it. You posted so can everyone else.

Now listening to the Mix let's think here. Sooner or later everyone scans the channels trying to find a song they enjoy and if it happens to be played on the Mix we'll problably listen to it. Don't expect us to be loyal and keep it on that station when in our opion the Mix was not loyal to us. The channel will be turned.

Trust is built over a period of time and time is something the Mix dosen't have.

Don't go out there trying to make sense of something that dosen't make sense to us. There's always a Devils Advocate out there and this time it seems like it's you Scott B.

Let us grieve and adjust our own way and leave us alone. Your probably a good person let's try to keep it that way Scott "B"??

Till you surface again Howard and I'll be waiting... Cheers

Scott B.
August 5, 2006 / 01:13

I'm a Humble Howard fan.
But, I'm also a fan of radio and I happen to like the Mix. You can grieve. I will not take that away from you. All I am saying is Humble is facing no financial hardship. Neither is Fred. They are great hosts and will find new homes. I feel worse for the other staff that won't be back. Regardless, I am thinking Mix 99.9 will be changing more than just the morning show. I just cannot see them switching to Maddog and Billie and keeping the same music. Either way, I am more of a radio fan than I am a fan of any one particular genre of music.

Just wanted to add my two cents... I'm joining the chorus in expressing my profound disappointment in the MIX. In getting rid of their best talent, I'm left wondering what to listen to in the morning. He was the only one that made me chuckle in the mornings, and the only show really worth listening to. Now that he's gone, I have much less reason to listen to the MIX. I wish you the best, howard. Hope to hear you back on the radio waves of the T.O in the near near future.

August 5, 2006 / 10:51

I heard that "Mad Dog" once slaughtered a pig on the air, and "Billie" allows listeners to come up to the station and fondle her nether regions...?

Actually, where does the negative impression of that duo come from? They are more mainstream and whitebread than Humble Howard could ever be, and that's saying a lot.

But that's what works in the bigtime radio biz.

August 5, 2006 / 12:09

I've listened to Humble & Fred since HH started at CFNY in '89. I got tired of "the Edge" about the same time they left and was pleasantly surprised to see them turn up on the Mix.

Like many of the other posters here, if I was listening just for the music- I'd be tuned to Jack. It was only the personalities, specifically H&F, that kept 99.9 on the favourite button.

Humble and Fred were occasionally brilliant. The "Did Not Know That" song by "Heavy Rain", a bit they did as a "caller" to a St. Louis radio station as the Leafs played the Blues in the playoffs.... I didn't care much for Mr. Goohead, but some of the Freddie P songs like "Snow Removal Machine" still make me smile. The Humble Report, Fred's sportcasts, later- Judy Croon's sardonic humour.... There was so much there to make you laugh and get your day off to a good start.

Oh well, hasta la vista MIX. Maybe someone will round up H&F, Judy, maybe even Alan Cross and start a CFNY for grownups.

Best of Luck to you, Howard, and belatedly to Fred. I'm sure you guys will land on your feet.

Not a lot more can be said about the whole firing fiasco at the MIX. I'm 26 years old and I started listening to the MIX because of Humble and Fred. I was pissed off that Fred got punted, and I can appreciate how hard it must have been for Howard to continue. When Bingo Bob and Judy joined they really started to gel. I felt like I really got to know them. I regret not calling in and knowing that I won't have that chance is a little sad, but I hope that the gang is doing well.

P.S. MIke, can you send me Howard's email address?

As I now work within 5 minutes from home, my leaving the MIX for Q107 in the shower is not going to hurt them. I just wanted to add my thoughts. I was devasted when Humble and Fred left CFNY as I had just started a job with an hour commute. MOJO radio was a godsend. I had never become such a devote listener to one station all day and weekends. The format, the talkjocks when they started was truly new and is dearly missed. It sucks now. CFNY lost a devote listener after HH and Freddie P left the station, it lost all the character reformatting the station. I think TO Radio has lost its glory days, around the same time Q brought on Howard Stern and stations became incorporated with one another.Bring back the little stations that grew. Spirit of Radio.

It's official, there's nothing to listen to on the radio in Buffalo. Just recently found Howard, after years listening to Humble and Fred. Best a.m. radio there was. What a great retrouvaille! Now it's gone. Bad, regrettable, stupid move on their part.

I've followed Humble and Fred since 1989. I was surprised Fred was fired last year and they waited so long to fire Humble. They probably wanted Humble to quit back then when they got rid of Fred so they wouldn't have to pay him. Bunch of office geeks. Mr Holiday fires a friend to save his own hide. Not surprising. Hope to hear Humble and Fred back on the airwaves very soon.
Mike can you please give me Humble's email address.

August 6, 2006 / 12:46

Hey Humble!

I look forward to reading your articles in the National Post as much as I looked forward to you daily banter with your co workers.

I loved hearing you talk about and to your family on the air. Your love and respect for each other truly shows.

I've been sending you emails to your blackberry... and you've even answered me. Mike, if his email is not his blackberry could you please send it to me?

I agree with everyone else here that they fired the wrong people. I couldn't listen when Steve took over in the morning. He tried to do the Ping Ping for lunch thing and instead of doing the personal touch like Humble does... he just says, call in, someone wins and you pick up your prize yourself. How pathetic is that? He even was talking about the Zoo and how much he learns there and promptly calls Koala's bears! I had to write to him and tell him that he didn't learn that much because Koala's are not bears.. they are marsupials.

I would also like to get a message to Bingo Bob and Judy to tell them how much I am going to miss them.

Mix missed the mark on this one. I've heard MD & B and I don't like them. They've advertised that "this isn't your parent's radio station" Well my son said that is the most accurate thing they've said! The Mix isn't my radio station anymore... in fact he doesn't like the change they made either!

I'll be looking for you Humble, Fred, Judy and Bingo Bob!

Ali
August 6, 2006 / 14:37

I never imagined that MIX 99.9 could be this shortsighted. The only reason I tolerated a truly TERRIBLE rotation of music was the morning show, the rest of the time I was thankful for an MP3 player and car adapter! The reason the ratings are low has nothing to do with morning show personalities; I was shocked when The Dixie Chicks made it into the morning rotation sometime back in June... what's next? Avril Lavigne? Best of the Backstreet Boys? Kenny G?! To the program directors: There is only so much Nickleback one person can take.

It is truly the end of an era... I've listened to Humble (and Fred) since I was in high school... My favourite Humble and Fred moment? Number 1 in '97. Does anyone else have the cd of the best moments from that year? Hilarious, some of the best stuff on radio... the lamb's head song: "It was a lamb's head/Staring back/Right beside the liver of a cat..."

OOooh Howard, what ever will we do? I too am terribly disappointed with The Mix. The last week has been nothing but advertisment for those 2 idiots, Mad Dogg and Bill...something or other. I will not listen to The Mix if I can't pee my pants with laughter while listening to you, Judy and Bingo. Mix 99.9 is dead to me.

But rock on Howard you are loved and will genuinely be missed.

Humble Howard and Fred Patterson have been a part of my life since their days at CFNY. Like most of you, I have followed them throughout their careers because they are so much fun and they make me laugh so hard. There is also a very compassionate side to Humble and Fred. I will never, ever forget the time when Bingo Bob called me on my cell as I was driving into work because of an email I had written to Humble and Fred. I had asked them to give up one of their morning cash give aways and sponsor me in the Run for the Cure. Bingo Bob asked me to hold the line and the next thing I knew, I was on the air with Fred, Humble, Judy and Bob and they presented me with a $500 donation. My mother was so touched by their generosity, unfortunately she passed away shortly after that. I ran into Judy Croon at the CIBC Run for the Cure event, and I was able to personally thank her and the entire morning crew for making that very important donation. The MIX has made a very tragic mistake in firing 4 very honourable, compassionate, funny and talented DJ's. Like many of you have said...Humble, Fred, Judy and Bob were and are, our very good friends and our mornings will never be the same until that morning crew is reunited.
P.S...Mike, please forward Humble's email address to me

I am one of the people from Buffalo who found the Humble Howard Morning Show better than anything we have here in Buffalo. However, I think we might be putting the blame on the wrong people. I don't think it was Mix 99.9 that did the actual firing, but Standard Radio, who owns the station. The reason I say this is because another morning show in Buffalo, Shredd and Ragan on 103.3 the Edge FM, which I was listening to during the "Summer Vacation", was taken off the air in favor of those scumbags Opie and Anthony in the mornings despite destroying other Buffalo morning shows' ratings. It turned out, however, that it wasn't the Edge that made the call, but the corporate headquarters of Citadel Communications all the way in New York City. (Also, that morning show was moved to weekday afternoons, as well, not completely taken off the air...still the move made no sense). Nobody knows exactly what the reason was. The reason I bring this up is because I am one of the (seemingly) few that like Mix as a station overall, morning show and music, and think they deserve a little bit of a fair defense. I don't think that it was the station's call to make, but the company that owned the station, which I understand is Standard Radio Inc. I'll bet they are the ones that need their heads put on the platter.

Regardless, I hope Howard gets back on the air again soon, and on a station where we can pick up the frequency here in Buffalo. Or, as the one Buffalonian said, the crew is more than welcome to move to Buffalo and bump one of the ridiculous morning shows down here. Hey, if a certain Buffalo DJ could go to Canada for his own show, why can't one from Canada come down here?

The mix has given us yet another reason to invest in Satellite radio!
I’ve been a Humble and Fred fan since the days of CFNY.
How does a radio station expect to develop a loyal fan base when they can’t show the same loyalty to their employees?
Fred’s departure and the way the station handled it was disgraceful and should have foretold the future of things to come!
I never liked the music on this station but tuned in to listen Humble Howard,
The music never suited the duo and the station should have adjusted the music play to suit the listening audience. Perhaps they could have increased listener ship by actually playing great tunes.
I’ve enjoyed reading the blog, reminding me of all the great Humble and Fred moments.
I loved Fred’s Mom! I grew up with H&F.
Change can be good; hopefully Humble and Fred can find a new morning show that plays great music!

I will miss you dearly Humble. I loved waking up in the morning to listen to your sarcastic remarks. I sent an email to the producer of the mix complaining why it is always such a big secret when they get rid of their dj's. Instead of calling it the summer vacation why didn't they call it the staff turnover. Thanks again Humble, Judy and Bingo bob for all the memories, I will miss you. By the way Mad dog and billie suck!

Last summer when Fred disappeared I e-mailed Howard and he replied that unfortunately Fred was no longer on the air but had received a great package and would be okay but that I should feel sorry for Humble as he was left there holding the bag. I think he did a great job of pulling together a new morning show and really loved the Humble Bob Judy combo. I like many others followed Humble and Fred to the Mix and am also lost without my morning show. I used to laugh all the way to work. If this morning's Mad Dog and Billie is an indication of what their show will be like, I won't be listening. They are boring. Plus - I can feel a change in the play list - and I liked the music the way it was. So I guess I'm looking for a new radio station - sigh. If anyone hears where they end up, please let us all know.

Just curious - does anyone know where on the Internet you can track morning show ratings (only ever saw this in print, buried in a newspaper once)??

Also, I wanted to reply to a comment earlier about where were all of us when HH needed us listening (I think it was a comment directed about the poor ratings the morning show was receiving which led to the firing) - I was listening to MIX as I think most people on here were. And we've listened to MD&B on other stations (before H&F joined MIX) and we don't like them at all. So, in our household, we've made our decision based on what we know, not what's perceived, and we will not listen to the MIX anymore in the morning (just as we can't stomach Dean Blundell on CFNY in the morning).

Like many here I've been a long time Humble and Fred fan. I switched from Edge 102.1 to Mix 99.9 when I found out Humble and Fred where there.

I never really listened to mix for the music, it's not really any more or less tolerable than any other station. However starting my morning with the wit, intelligence, and truly unique humour of Humble and Fred kept me from changing the dial.

I'm definately one of the more gulliable ones. When the "vacation" adds started playing I found them annyoing, switched to some other radion stations, listened to my own music more.... and tuned in at the begining of last week (still no Humble)... and then the begining of this week and caught a bit of the Mad Dog and Billy show, and figured out what was up.

I'm not going to slag Mad Dog and Billy, I don't know much about them. What I can say after listening for an hour, is that is the last hour the MIX had me as a listener. Their style seems to be a co-ed version of the Dean Blundel show, which I could not tolerate.

Humble, Fred, Judy and Bingo Bob, for all their silly antics (which I love), were also witty and intelligent. It made the morning funny, enjoyable and also made me think. It's smart humour, and I need that to stay interested.

As for younger demographic... well I'm 27... is that over the hill now? Well maybe it is for radio.

Humble, Fred, Judy and Bob you are missed, please let us know when and where we can catch you next. I need to go buy more memory cards for my mp3....

Cheers,

Sara.

According to National Post, Humble Howard and crew got sacked because they're unable to attract new listener. How they determine that? based on logic, i'm assuming it's about number of calls into the radio station, and telephone survey(i've personally answered a few of those).

I feel bad that Howard got fired. It's always a tough event in anybody's life. I have been fired before, although not in the same fashion as Mr. Howard, it did suck.

I am, however, not surprised the morning show got replaced. I have been living in Montreal for the last 16 years, there is also "The Mix" in Montreal, also owned by Standard Radio Inc. having been listening to the montreal Mix morning show, i don't find myself enjoying the Humble Howard show. the difference is day and night. Radio host CAN be and often are the biggest reason why people listen to them, not only the music.

example, Howard Stern.

I have moved to Buffalo due to my job since February 2006. I've tried to listen to The Mix 99.9, 98.5(buffalo local), both are not up to the standard as what The Mix in Montreal had to offer. I find myself listening to the webcast from the Montreal Mix just to catch the jokes and the news in the morning.

This is not to rub salt to Mr. Howard's injury, but simply the voice of a new listener expressing why i'm not enjoying Humble Howard show.

I came back from vacation up north to find this inustice perpetrated on thousands of HH fans.

Thanks "Humble" Howard and the crew (including Freddie P.) for making the mornings enjoyable.

As for MIX 99.9, well, you're a "Standard" radio station. As you're probably aware, when you're the "standard", you're nothing special. Everyone else is like you. With the loss of HH, there's truly no reason to listen to the station because it's like everything else.

Hello car MP3 player - goodbye MIX 99.9.

Happy Landings Humble!

Here my e-mail and response from The Mix....What realy bothers me is they didn't seem to care I was leaving their station...no "Give them a chance"...OH well, I guess it's 680 and MP3 for now, until Humble and crew find a new home.

Robert,

Thanks for taking the time to email. You're not the only one who feels the way you feel about the old morning show. We are however receiving a lot of positive comments about
the new morning show. Essentially, you can't please everyone. The old morning show consistently underperformed the rest of the radio station in ratings. If/when the ratings are LESS
than that of the rest of the radio station, a business decision must be made beyond the music. Again, I appreciate your input and I wish you only the best.

To whom it may concern,

I have been a listener since I moved here in 99...I've tried to be loyal to the MIX through all your changes, Carla Collins, Humble and Fred, then just Humble, and all the changes in between. I now have to say goodbye to the Mix. After loosing probably the best morning show on the air, I will boycott your station. I listened to the Mad Dog and billy show, well 30 minutes of it anyway, and couldn't take it. Turned on the MP3 player instead.

Like I said, I am gone. This is by far the worst direction you could go. You may attract a few more listeners, but I guarantee you will loose more than you will attract. You problem was never with the show, or your hosts, it was woth the same old music, day in day out, 3-4-5 times a day...I even think I heard the same song twice within the same 4 hour period....on a couple of occasions.

Your (mix999) mistake will hopefully catch up to you....Bring 'em all back...they were the glue that held the mix together, otherwise, you'd be long gone.....

I'm sure i'm not the only one who feels this way...

Robert

Hey there. I just found this site, it's cool to see all of the loyal listeners. To the person who didn't like HH, have they compared him to any other morning shows hosts in Toronto (not Montreal)?
Anyhow, this it to Howard directly, we have a huge Cottage in the Muskoka region (3000 sq ft) on top of a cliff overlooking the Sound (off of Parry Sound). You and you're family are more than welsome to join us up there - provided you don't mind being around an incredibly active 2 year old boy. I'll keep checking in to see if you are interested.

Thanks.

You know it’s funny how a radio station will always thank it’s “loyal listeners”… I listened to Mix 99.9 in the mornings on my way to work. It’s not a lot of radio time, I know, but there are other stations out there equally as good with the music selection… Funny however that I never listened on the way home from work (no offence Steve Anthony).

Why is that? In 2 words - Hunble Howard.

I know program directors get it - I mean, it’s their job, and they certainly have to know more about radio than do I… But radio is a collection of songs - several I enjoy, and several I don’t. When a “bad song” comes on the radio - the only thing that keeps a listener tuned in is, waiting for more commentary from the DJ. Without that, I may as well be listening to my CD’s - which are a compilation of songs, all of which, I enjoy.

So while I have no problem with Mad Dog and Billie - I think I’ll start checking out Jack FM. It was my 2nd favorite station, but with the absence of Humble Howard to brighten my mornings, perhaps (like radio station managment) I’m in tune for a change also…

Humble and Fred was my morning staple for many years. It started during the CFNY years and ended once Freddie was let go. I still carry my Humble and Fred membership card in my wallet. I am sad that the airwaves are silent (at least for the moment) of their banter. I wish the best for both men! I am sure we have not heard the end of Humble Howard and I am hopeful that we can hear Humble and Fred reunited!
Good luck with the future to you both, and I feel your pain of being fired. It sucks!
Cheers,
Kevin

I was lost without Humble, so I Googled his name and that's how I got here. I'm sure glad I found this page. All my questions have been answers and I can even hear from Humble himself. Somehow, that's incredibly comforting.

To Mix 99.9 I say shame on you. To Mad Dog and Billie and say good luck filling those shoes. To TorontoMike I say thank you for this. This is something special. To Humble I say you were a bright light on cold mornings and you're already quite missed.

Mad Dog and Billy replace Humble Howard? Oh the shame and inhumanity! I don’t know what’s worse? Getting FIRED! Or being replaced by a forty+ year old who still uses his high school moniker? “Mad Dog.” Pah-leazzz…. How juvenile. But alas, Humble was only kidding himself if he thought he was above the fate of his one time friend Fred Patterson. Humble let his wingman get shot down and he went on as if the guy never existed. That’s weak sauce Howard! It’s sad when someone loses his or her job and it cuts even deeper when your employer has been working on your demise for some time. Let’s face it the MIX was negotiating with “Show Dog” and Billy for some time now.

Extremely ruthless this radio business, but always remember, what goes around comes around. Maybe Fred, Humble Judy and Bob will get the last laugh if the new morning crew doesn’t live up to expectations. And maybe just maybe, management will get the other edge of the sword they used to cut down those from Morning Shows past. Howard you’ve got some explaining to do to Fred. And now you know how he feels. Make up and find your way back to radio as a team. Judy and Bob all the best to you too. I hope to hear Judy’s morning news again real soon.

Cheers,

Brian...

Guess I'm not alone when it came to wondering the whereabouts of Humble Howard. I actually did the google route to find out what station he may have moved to. Been a loyal listener since the Edge, only listened to Mix for Humble. No more Mix for me either.
Good luck to Howard and his family, hope to hear you on the air or in the air soon!

I listened to MIX long before Humble & Fred, but I stayed because of them. For the first time ever - I can't even tune in. MD&B - are you kidding me? Forget it.
Humble - I've never laughed so hard...I hated driving to work each morning....but you helped make it easier to handle.
I can't wait to tune in when you're back on air.
I will miss you!

Hated when the Mix let Fred go. Hate it even more since Humble is now gone. No worries as Humble and Fred will return. Hopefully it will be in the TO area so we can listen to them again. No more Mix for me.

Humble made my day on my long ride to work. All other stations are so much alike and full of small talk boring crap, like " my mom when shopping yesterday" WHO CARES!! I loved the outrageous laughs with Humble. Even worse is how this station talked crap all month and left the VERY VALUABLE LISTENERS they talk about in the dark - now left with a feeling of being lied to and cheated.
I know HOward deserves to work with a better team and he will get a great offer soon.

Having been gone on holidays myself, and not having internet, or the ability to tune in Humble and the morning show crew, I was more than excited to return home and dial in my favorite morning show. But what I tuned into wasn't Humble, Judy or Bob...it was crap! I too have followed Humble and Fred from the beginning, and made the change to AM Radio, and then back to the FM Dial. I too was upset when Freddie P was no longer with the show, but stood strong, and stayed a listener. I met Judy at a Comedy club one night when she opened for a local comedian, Gord Paynter, and she was hilarious, and finally meeting someone I listed to every morning, and like others said, she and the morning crew were part of our family. I will sadly miss Humble and the gang. I hope that they will return, sooner than later. I'm only 27, but I know what I like when it came to Radio, and the Mix is making a huge mistake. Bring back Humble, Fred, Judy and Bob...I NEED MY HUMBLE REPORT!

Whatever radio station frequency, web site, or Satelite station you guys hopefully move too....I'm there, and there WILL be others too!

Humble, I was shocked to hear the Mix let you go. I have been a loyal listener since your first days with CFNY and Fred P. You were the only reason I continued to listen to Fred because of his dumb ass comments about soccer.

I have no other choice but to listen to Dean Bunghole, against my better judgement.

OMG!!! Humble is gone? Just finding this out now because I haven't had a morning radio show in my car since my stereo was stolen just 2 weeks ago. That's beside the point. Well not really. I'm glad it got stolen because now I have no desire to listen to the radio. MIX 99 You suck! Miss you Humble, Croon and Bob :(

August 9, 2006 / 12:31

I just got back from vacation, turned on radio to listen to Humble, Judy and Bob as usual only to find Mad Dog and Bill????. What the #$%^. I moved to Toronto 3 years ago and the Humble Howard Morning Show (Humble & Fred) was the only morning show worth listening to in Toronto. You guys made my morning and will be sadly missed. Let us know where you end up, you have a loyal listener here. As for the MIX....my search for a new morning show begins. You just lost another NEW listener. I'd be watching those listener stats real close.

August 9, 2006 / 13:28

The posts here have captured how I feel so I won't try and restate what has been so eloquently stated by so many. However, I wanted to continue the thought by Andrew from Buffalo (August 7, 2006 / 23:19) regarding who called the shots in making the decision to axe Humble. According to Standard Radio's website (http://www.sri.ca/contact/contact_sta.html) Pat Holiday is the VP and GM for Mix, CFRB and EZRock, with individual program directors at each station. That leads me to believe that management decisions (including personnel decisions and programming) for all of Standard's Toronto stations are made by Pat Holiday (and likely rubber-stamped by Standard's Management Team). It is also my observation that many if not a majority of the posts here believe that the music selection was to blame for the low(er) ratings, not Humble (and Fred), who appear to have a devoted and loyal following.

So who are are we expressing our displeasure to? I notice that on the Mix website, there is contact info for everyone (http://www.999mixfm.com/contacts) except Pat Holiday. It's great that Karen Steele is responding personally to the emails. However, it seems that the person who made the decision to fire Humble (and Fred), and the person who oversees the music director (Wayne Webster) may not be reading the emails/posts on this site. I think Pat Holiday needs to read this weblog and the numerous emails sent to Karen Steele! I will try and send a link to this weblog to pat.holiday@999mixfm.com and see what happens.

Wow - don't know what to express first: my sincere sadness and feelings of loss over the firing of my dear (our dear) Humble, Judy, Bingo, and yes yes yes Freddie / or my gratitude to you Mike Boon for giving Howard, Judy, Bingo, and Fred a place to read ... THAT THEY ARE LOVED AND MISSED.

Just a note to the MIX - I have heard MD & Billie before, and they were okay - sometimes entertaining, not too bad as a 3rd or 4th preset. Now - I just can't stomach turning to them. Feels very TURNCOAT.

As a loyal Humble fan, I feel disrespected by the whole strategy of my morning show having never existed. Is this the twilight zone?

Yes - I will listen to the MIX again - when HH and his crew are on the air there. Otherwise - not a chance.

Thank you Howard, Freddie, Judy and Bingo!!!!!

I loved waking up to the Howard Humble show, he was so funny and now you have replaced him with mad dog and billy.
Billy has the most annoying voice i have ever heard so i will no longer will be listening to your morning show and i will got back to 103.5. At least they are loyal to their staff and listeners.

*Sigh*
I miss Humble AND Fred.
I do not miss the Mix (blah) music.

Let's all face it, an excellent morning show with crappy music is like a one legged man. He can still stand, but eventually he will fall down.

I have given a name to this phenomenon: Mix99.9-ism.

If you will excuse me, I will now change one of the presets in my car.

Mr Holiday: I've deleted 99.9 from the presets of every stereo I own. If you think the listenership numbers looked poor with Humble, Bingo, and Judy, wait until you see the numbers over the next few months. Schmuck.

As for you guys....Howard, Bob and Judy....you were every bit as much a part of my mornings as my cup of coffee. I'll leave a preset open until you find a new home.

I have been trying to listen to the Mix since Howard was let go, I just cannot do it. This new morning show just sucks - sorry guys.

Howard you did something for me that no other radio station would and that was give me some air time so I could talk about SIDS. I cannot tell you how much that meant to me and my husband. After our son died we felt like no one wanted to hear from us. You took the time, went to John Dylan's website and interviewed me at Union Station.

I hope that you will be back one day on another station here in Toronto, we need you!

Miss you lots and lots

Mad Dog and Billie are the most boring radio personalities ever. I can't believe that they fired Humble, Judy and Bob. I had listened to Humble and Fred for years and was devestated last summer when Fred was fired and I just can't believe that Humble has suffered the same fate. This sucks. I certainly won't be listening to the Mix anymore.

August 10, 2006 / 09:45

I listened to about 10 minutes of MadDog and Billie before I had to turn the station. I gave them a chance, and they were terrible.

Oh, and I wrote into Karen Steele and to the imput email account and didn't get a response from either.

JackFM isn't bad. They'd be better with a morning show though... just saying.

August 10, 2006 / 11:26

To the listener who got the reply and it seems as if MIX does't care. You're right!
I emailed the following comment to info@mix999.com:

(my email to MIX):

While I have nothing personal against Mad Dog & Billie, I assure you I won't be listening to their program. You see I'm a loyal Humble & Fred fan. Listened to them when they were at EDGE then MOJO and the only reason I tuned to the MIX was because Humble & Fred were there. Even when you fired Fred I continued listening to The Humble Howard Show.

Plus, I don't like the fact we loyal Humble Howard listeners weren't given any advance warning of his not being there anymore. If we knew beforehand, I would've been fair and listened to Mad Dog & Billie to see what they're like.

Just wanted you to know there is nothing you can say and do to get me tune into Mix WITHOUT Humble Howard and WITHOUT Fred Patterson. I'll be listening to Roger, Rick & Marilyn instead over at CHUM-FM.

John G.

P.S. The MIX has been taken off the preset on my Walkman.

AND HERE IS THE REPLY(SOME REPLY, HUH? Okay, I told them there's nothing they can say and do to convince me to listen to MIX now but it seems as if they're not even making an attempt to get back a listener):

Their reply to my email:

My drive to work is now very boring. Howard, Judy and Bob made me laugh out loud every day . Mix 99 has made a big mistake - Mad Dog and Billy may be fine for some, but I find them quite boring. I can't wait to find out what station Howard goes to - I'll be there in a heartbeat.

August 10, 2006 / 13:38

Man, as soon as that "All our DJs are on vacation" promo was coming up on its second week, I KNEW some major changes were happening over at The Mix. I was guessing new management or at least a brand change. I hate being right. Mad Dog and Billie are alright compared to what's currently available, but NO ONE on the radio holds a candle (in Toronto anyway -- Terry and Ted in Montreal were great...) to Humble and Fred. Though Humble, Judy and Bob were a close second. I was so upset to hear they were gone. I've tried listening to Mad Dog and Billie (having nothing else) but it's just not captivating. Humble has made me late for work on occasion because I wanted to catch "The Humble Report". That, my friends, is entertaining. And all those mornings I used to be lying in bed in stitches because of Humble's jokes. For the last three years, the ONLY time I listened to the radio was to hear the Humble Howard show or the Humble and Fred show. Humble, I'm rooting for you! Anyone remember his blackberry e-mail?

August 10, 2006 / 15:08

So here I am - another googler trying to find the great Humble Howard and I know I'm late but I can't believe it...I'm so disappointed. I had never started laughing in my car on the way to work until the Humble Howard morning show!! And Maddog and Billie definitely do not cut it...and they want to expand on new listeners? They may as well have hired and 85 year old man with no humour whatsoever. The "new" morning show just trys way to hard.

So, Howard best of luck to you and the gang. I will miss the stories of your family (I used to come home at night and share them with my husband b/c I thought they were hilarious). My favourite story was the "Do dancers fart?" I laughed and laughed at the cutest story ever. You could always tell you were so crazy about your wife and daughters.

My hope is you stay in Toronto and come back on the air.

Mix 99.9 - see ya later.

I've already posted a comment on this topic but I check back EVERY day. I've had a reply email from Humble's blackberry (I emailed him that Monday morning.... July 17th....) but in a nutshell.. Julie (one of the last comments) says it all... we need them! All of them. We need Humble, we need Fred, we need Bingo and we need Judy. We NEED all of them. Whether we support them via satellite or regular FM (and I think by now the "Mix FM" [as they're choosing to call themselves now and even giving out free t-shirts.... pfftt...what-ever....] are pretty much toast with this crowd [minus "Scott"].... we need the sound of everyday "grown-up" life )was that Doug who said that??). I am sad to say I wasn't a 102 listener (I listened to Humble's friend, Jeff Lumby (and later Scott & Lori on Y95 in Hamilton) but when I heard they were going to be the new Mix on the Friday in August 2003 (was it the 14th???) I have listened ever since KNOWING I LOVED THEM! It was different than any other morning show and I can only imagine that 'NY was the same.... and why I'm having trouble now... I mean, I like to hear the news and Jack doesn't do news. I'm not comfortable with anyone else.. I know if Humble, Fred, Bingo and Judy do find their way to something we can listen to (and knowing Sirrius is a Standard product we can only assume that it would be an XM reality....) I would figure out how I could make it work that I wake up to them and pay for them for whatever part of the day they were willing to offer... The rest of the day is one thing... but that waking up in the morning is something that is sooooooo sacred.... We all have our waking up stories, our getting ready for work and our drive to work..... we all find value in Humble, Fred, Bingo and Judy and have all chosen to top the 200 mikeboon.com comment number. We need to support them in their future. I believe their future is NOW, while we're all still bitter and confused. I'll follow them whereever - even if it means just reading a feddiep.ca or a howard site.... I really don't ever not want to be a part of that life.

How's that for a double negative???

Love you guys.... do something and let me know soon!!!

....was I #1394 of H&F stock?????

Ok, Here I am again Howard. I read the new enteries everyday. I was thinking on my way to work today, {while i was searching for a station to listen to } about the Asian woman who called into your show the Friday morning before you went on Holidays to Florida. She told you to hurry back and how much she loved you and would miss you. I thought of how lost that poor woman must feel now. I know how lost I am :( I guess we keep coming back here because we find comfort in being with people who are MOURNING THE MORNING SHOW! Wow...catchy line !! hahaha!

Waking up for work has always been somewhat of a chore for me. I would prefer to stay in that sweet never-neverland called sleep. The one joy I got out of waking up in the mornings for work was to listen to, at first, Humble and Fred, and then later on, Humble, Judy and Bob. I can't count the number of times I would be laughing out loud in my bed as I am trying to shake the sleep off my brain. I can't count the number of times I would choke on my toothpaste because of something hilarious they said while I was brushing my teeth. It was honestly a total joy to listen to them every morning.

Now, my mornings are reduced to snorts of disgust as I listen to Mad Dog and Billie. MIX, I don't know what audience you are trying to appeal to with them. It must be the humourless kind. Their wit is nonexistant and they are just utterly painful to listen to. Though you were trying to increase your numbers, you have lost yet another listener with that 'brilliant' change.

To Humble, Fred, Judy and Bob - I hope a there is a radio station out there with some iota of common sense that hires you all. I will be looking out and one of the first of countless others to tune in.

Stephanie
August 11, 2006 / 12:14

Mix has lost another listener...this morning I tried in vain to find Howard on my dial! I don't know how I am going to make my way through traffic now every morning. Maybe some other station will read this blog and get our favorite morning show back up and running. Hell, here's your proof that it was the music not the personalities. I'm 26 and I have no idea what demographic they are looking for either. I do know that I have never enjoyed MD & B and I will not start now. So long Mix... it's been fun.

m
August 11, 2006 / 15:12

I can't believe I found so many others that are struggling as much as me! I have had a very tough time waking up the past week. I thought I'd give MD&B a chance and now I say "DONE THAT"!
The Mix is now offically off my radio - I'll go through a bit of withdrawal despite the song repetition...but without HH it is not worth it - I need to wake up laughing. I thought the MIX actually was on an upswing the morning I heard HH&F were hired there (I am a long time listener to CFNY but couldn't handle their music programming any longer).

I have never posted to a blog before - its kind of therapeutic on a topic you feel strongly about.
Good luck Humble - I'm sure we'll hear your whereabouts soon - I was just starting to get over the loss of Freddie! This will take some time but we'll all land on our feet - look forward to more laughs soon.

I would just like to add that my pathetic, boring, hand-to-mouth, meagre existence has now suffered a blow that I am REALLY having a hard time adjusting to. Who was the *@%#!! GENIUS that thought an INSANE DOG and a GOAT could rival the hallowed Humble? I am forced to listen to the Aboriginal Music station. And myself. (Save me from this state of purgatory someone PLEASE!!!) (I am grateful for this opportunity to throw my two cents at the issue, thanks for hosting this Mike!) It feels good to finally have a mini-tantrum about it and know there are LOTS of people who will sympathize. I feel lost and disconnected. I can't stomach the INSANE DOG and GOAT daycare-and-cheerleader-show, especially first thing in the morning. MIX has lost a listener, and the roads have gained yet another disgruntled driver. I have listened to H&F at the Edge, even listened to AM while they were there, and only listed to the MIX because of H&F and eventually, Humble on his own. I truly hope Humble returns to radio very soon. Some semblance of normalcy needs to return to my life. Terrorists are attacking airports, everything lately seems to need an acronym, and there is absolutely nothing for me to listen to in my car. Please send me Humble’s email address. I will visit here as often as possible and participate in any petition to make the madness end. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!

Ditto to all of the above! Humble and company in the mornings made the commute to work a real laugh. Amazing how Humble and the gang could get you laughing in the morning and put you in a great mood for the remainder of the day!

I gave Mad Dog & Billie (are they serious) a chance this week. Unbearable! Talking about getting pissed, being pissed, being hung over and starting all over again is funny once - but everyday, I don't think so.

Goodbye Mix, another listner gone. Good Luck to Humble,Judy and Bob and can't wait until they are back on

Please bring Humble Howard back!!! I dont have anything to listen to on the way to work. I have been listening to Roger, Rick and Marilyn and it is quite boring. I dont laugh on the way to work anymore. I miss my morning gang. I will NOT listen to the MIX till they bring them back. Please!

Howard you probaly forgot but you got me my only pay raise while I was in radio in the 1990's and you were never a dick to me, unlike a couple of other people that are still there today at ny. Thanks for being a decent guy. Good luck. I quit and started over, so can you.

Fred was fired during my first maternity leave, Howard during my second. I promise I won't have any more kids!!! Mix has lost my family as listeners. Perhaps the highly coveted new listeners couldn't stand listening to the same Oasis and Coldplay songs over and over... Humble & Fred were the only reasons I put up with it for so long.

Hi everyone,

This response has been amazing. I know Howard appreciates you taking the time to tell him he's missed.

I've been thinking about Howard and the ol' Humble and Fred show. Here's the million dollar question for you all.

If Humble and Fred were available on satellite radio, would you subscribe?

Dear Ms Steele,

I am one of many Humble Howard fans who were saddened by the sudden removal of him and his collegues. You had been advertising the changes as being "Not your parents radio station!" This and the fact that Mad Dog and Billie are rather juvenile lead me to believe that you are going for a younger audience. Why then do I still hear advertisments for cars and I think it was some sort of home improvement product? Shouldn't you be promoting zit cream and soft drinks now?? Also, why did I hear a Bon Jovi song? excuse me but isn't that a "Mom" song??

Please explain this all to me as I still can't figure it all out....

thanking you in advance for your response...

Mike,
Thanx for the email.

If Humble and Fred were on satellite radio, it would be the best reason I have heard to date to subscribe. Hence I would likely make the commitment!!! Such talent would be worth the modest daily cost. And I do miss what they contributed to my day. Hope it comes through.

I can't believe it ! I thought Humble was still on vacation. I don’t think I can take another morning with Mad Dog and what's her name, not that there’s anything wrong with them. Now 99.9 is just like every other station, dull, annoying, un-original and goofy.
Humble has the gift of wit. He’s a leader with a natural born talent that he makes the most of every day. Humble makes people laugh, that deep laugh you feel in the pit of your stomach even when you’re stuck in rush hour traffic. No set-ups for Humble and he’s never laughed at is own jokes. (Factoid – 99.9 per cent of all DJ’s laugh at their own jokes)

Howard, things can only get better for you. You’re probably tired of hearing people say that one door closes and another one opens, but in your case this is not true, there’s millions of new doors open for you ! The sky is the limit ! Speaking of the sky, stay out of the clouds man. My buddy was flying out of Buttonville the day you got into the soup over the Burlington area (a few months ago) and heard your nervous radio transmission to Toronto terminal. You’re lucky to be alive ! Those few minutes must have felt worse than just getting fired.

This is the third big event that will stand out in my mind for ever, the first two being the shooting of John F. Kennedy and the attacks on World Trade Centre.

Humble, You gotta get together with Fred again, that was the best combo in the history of radio.. Silly is good, goofy is bad. Goofy is all we have left. Guess I’ll have to get tapes of your old shows

I have no interest in turning on 99.9 in the morning, just can't tolerate 'Mad Dog' (get a grip and get a name) and 'Billie', which one is which anyway?
I really miss Humble and Fred and Judy and Bob. Their humour really was engaging and set me up right for the day.
I would certainly consider satellite radio to hear them again. Let us kow when and how.

I am already a SIRIUS subscriber and I can hardly listen to "regular" radio any more - now I have no reason to turn it on at all. Howard - and Fred - were great, I was listening to Howard in Calgary in 1982 even ...followed them everywhere, am a proud shareholder ... loved the "affair" between HH and Mrs P ... miss miss miss the good 'ol days! PLEASE Howard consider bringing the "Humble&Fred" show to Sirius! Get onto all those contacts in the biz you have! You guys were great on "testicular" radio - you could only be fantastic on satellite!

I finally found a site to tell me what happened to my guys. I commute an hour and a half every day for the past three years, and in the past two, finally found, first Humble and Fred...and then Humble, Judy and Bob. I went away (military tour) came back, there was only Humble, not sure what had happened. Then again, this year, I was away for holidays, come back and find new DJs ( who I am sure are nice people - but hey no Humble and Fred, and Judy and Bob) not only was there irreverant humour, goofiness, sometimes lame jokes, but a definte humanity and energy to the show that made the kilometres fly. Well, tell me where the crew are going, and I will switch stations or subscribe. For now, I am back to CDs and it sucks.

HI All

My name is Colin Anderson and may be a little bette rknown as Scottish Colin from the Humble and fred show.

I became friends with the 2 bastards shortly after arriving from Europe.

They helped me a lot and we became friends with my becoming quite a regular guest on the show.

TO be honest they were never the same after they left Mojo to go to the mix

In fact I thought all along that the Mix sucked!!

I also have to agree that i dont think satellite radio is the way to go.

We all need to push hard and get the buggers back on the radio so we can all enjoy.

THey were(are) a great team and they brightened up my morning just like many others!

Im sure they will be back sometime in the ner future and Ill be backing them 100%

I'd love to hear the infamous duo again (and Judy and Bob) but don't have a satellite radio receiver or service in place at present. Bit of a technophobe I'm afraid. I was hoping one of the regular stations would pick them up.
Now my question to you is-
Are the bosses at MIX ignoring the fact that these guys had a following and are very funny? Want to know what the formula is for increased ratings? A balanced diet of good (not canned) music with new original local/international talent, tongue-in-cheek dialogue ( i.e. Humble and Fred et al) and longer than a two minute news update and commentary. That's what would give people the incentive to tune into 99.9 MIX. The broadcasters have been told many times before what the problem is but hang on with a desperate futility to their processed programming. Hope Howard and Fred were comforted by the outpouring of support. I'm listening to CBC radio these days and my vocabulary is improving. Just not laughing as much... Don't get me started...

Actually Humble & Fred Show started to loose attraction when they left 640. When Fred was fired, I stopped listing Mix and also Humble Show.

  • I always think why Humble did not resign on Fred's firing?

  • Do they both have issues?

  • Should we hope they will come back togather or they don't want each other now

  • Can both (specially Humble) announce on this forum that they are ok to work togather
  • Anyhow GOOD LUCK to Fred and Humble.....

For those of you looking into sattelite radio, remember that Sirius Canada is a joint effort between the CBC and Standard, so if Humble and Fred were to show up, it probably wouldn't be there.

With that being said, I have a U.S. Sirius unit, and I can say that it's totally worth it. There's a lot of music to choose from, football and basketball broadcasts, Howard Stern (if you're a fan of his), and even some BBC radio.

Of course, there are some drawbacks. Steve Anthony is a DJ on Iceberg 95 (although he doesn't really try to be funny), some of the hosts at ESPN radio are idiots (Cowherd, Smith and Patrick come to mind), and there are, in fact, commercials on some of the stations.

I recommend looking at this site for some things you should know about Sirius:

Listended to H & F since 1990. I was gutted when Fred was let go but I stuck with HH morning show. He, Judy and Bob did a good job though and still gav eme lots to laugh about. This was the only show I listened to on the Mix. There were very few songs I liked on the Mix - could not stand the endless Rob Thomas. My point is that I believe there was nothing wrong with show, just the music in between.

I have listened to Mad dog, but they really aren't very funny. A bit like Roger, Rick and Maralyn.

I am listening to CBC and Jazz FM. I considered satellite when the HH show was cancelled, but thought I'd hold off until I find out where H & F pop up next.

Miss you guys on the air!

I don't live in Toronto. Heck, I don't even live in the GTA anymore! But I could get The Mix, even out here. Thank God, because I've been enjoying Humble and Fred since their CFNY days. My husband even has Humble and Fred shares, as a result of nominating his buddy for the "Good Guy of the Week" award from AM 640. But now? Now I have to find some local station that I'm sure will pale in comparison, both musically and personality-wise. What other station will entice me to spend that few extra minutes in the car, just to catch the end of their "report"? (the Humble Report). What other radio personality will have me laughing so hard I can barely see to drive?? What other radio station can possibly make living in the middle of nowhere tolerable????? You are missed Humble. I look forward your offerings in print, and hope to hear you again soon!

I owe one of the 2000 copies of the Humble and Fred Cd. I heard the first show, I heard the "Fred has left the building show" - it was a slippery slope from there. I do like the boys and love to hear them together again.

Satellite. Sirius is kicking XM’s ass all because of programming, namely Stern. They charge $2 more a month, do less advertising and have 30% more subscribers. Is Stern worth $150,000,000 per year? Looks like it.

How about our boys, could H&F on satellite get 10,000+ new subscribers? I bet they be close.

I’m in – how about you?

I listened to CHFI until Mad Dog & Billie arrived (not that I was a fan of Erin Davis) but they were the last straw - boring, not funny. I found Humble & Fred and really enjoyed them, after Fred's departure Judy Croon and Bingo Bob filled the gap. Now I have to find ANOTHER station, I am taking The Mix off my pre-set!

    August 15, 2006 / 13:53

Man, I miss the Humble report. I sat in my car every morning of my work's parking lot just waiting for the Humble Report. I enjoyed Humble and Fred and then I also enjoyed when it was the Fantastic Trio of The Croon, Bingo and Humble. I have been listening to Mad Dog over the past week, I have not been impressed with it. Billie does "the Biz" and it sounds like a cheap attempt at duplicating the Humble Report. It's horrible. I wouldn't be able to afford Satallite radio, though if H and his crew moved there I would wish I could afford it. Humble, I sent Fred this suggestion and I'm going to suggest it here, try a Pod Cast. It does not cost anything to have a pod cast (as far as i'm aware) and it is basically like a radio station through the net. Those who wish to listen just subscribe to the pod cast and can listen in. It's a popular thing in the IT world, why not a group of radio personalities give it a try and have a kick a$$ pod cast. I'd be listening to that.

I have been unable to listen to a morning radio show since Humble left. I was determined to boycott MD&B, but this morning I finally broke down and gave them a try. (I've never listened to them before.) They were awful - so boring. I literally had to turn them off. I can't believe that their ratings could increase with this team. (Nice to see them playing the same old crap music though.)

I guess Humble just has a certain sense of humour that appeals to (smart) people like us.

I can't believe how much I still miss Humble. I used to time my getting ready for work in the morning and drive to ensure I didn't miss the Humble Report and the Access Inside Entertainment segments. I definitely listened to them despite the music they played. Now, I don't have a radio station to listen to. I can't stand the Chum people. I guess it's on to CDs for me as well.

My only hopeful thought when Humble got fired was that maybe he would follow in the footsteps of Erin Davis and be rehired with an apology. So with the hiring of MD&B, they are one more step in that direction!

I can't believe the Mix fired Humble Howard and Judy! They were such a brilliant team and had me laughing constantly on my long commute to Rochester. My only disappointment at the time was when I was no longer close enough to the Toronto radio waves to pick up Humble!

Mad dog and Billy are such a bore, I can't stand to listen to them! The Mix really dropped the ball on this one, and I am sure that once ratings come in they will realize the error of their ways.

I hope Humble finds another outlet for his hilarious sense of humour, I would gladly listen without reservation.

If anyone should be fired, it should be the person or persons who decided to fire the Mix morning crew... bad move!

alright, I'm guilty too... I've been checking this post religiously over these past few dark HH'less weeks, searching for scraps of info.

Been a massive long time listener of Howards, he started out on a station here in the bleak flatlands of Saskatchewan... He even called once and gave me advice on starting out in radio... in the flatlands of Saskatchewan. Even asked for an aircheck from me, which I did send, but not soon before the canning so... yeah

Anyways, Humble, Judy, and Bob on satellite? Hek yea. I'd give my left nut for that. Fred P. too? hey, I still have a right one up for grabs.

Just, I have XM.. so, I would prefer not buying into Sirius, but you know. I just might.

Alright, I'll go back to lurking and waiting for the news as to when and where to start listening again.

    take it easy.

To answer Mike's question about satellite - I would seriously consider it. I don't know anything about satellite though and would have to see if it was in the budget. But I would give up the take out so I could afford to listen to Humble and Fred again! I hope they show up again on the radio though. That's where they should be. I too, miss Humble Howard and team in the mornings. And like many others have said, it was the only reason I listened to Mix. I have always been an avid CBC listener, so the music wasn't what enticed me to listen to Mix. It was Howard!!! The mornings have not been the same since. Howard could make me laugh like no one else could. I listened to him many years ago in Calgary and when I moved here to Toronto, I was so pleased to find him again. It was even better as he had such great people to work with -- Fred, Judy, Bob.

I agree with so many of the comments made on this site and I don't tune in to Mix anymore either. Mad Dog and Billie? They won't entice new listeners, and what will the point be if all the old listeners have left? Mix will still not increase it's ratings.

I look forward to the day when Howard and Co. rule the airwaves again.

Could you imagine Humble and Fred uncensored, without the politics of analog radio? I can't wait.
Loosen the chains and let H & F go postal on satelllite.

I have also followed Humble and Fred since the CFNY days. Loved all their irreverence and hilarity. Miss them terribly. Hate Mad Dog & Billie. Never listening to the Mix again. No reason to anymore - only reason I did was for the morning show!!!! Humble and Fred, if you're listening, love you and miss you.

Aren't tens of thousands of loyal listeners more important a bunch of kids whose tastes and loyalties change with the weather?

I have no reason to listen to The Mix on my way to work. I miss Humble, Judy and Bob who made me laugh every single day.

Since the change I have tuned in once.

And the way it was done. Pretending you had given everyone the summer off. What a joke. Bad management, bad decision.

    I must now move on.

After returning from a long, overdue vacation i was really looking forward to listening to humble and the crew during my drive on my first day back to work, needless to say i was sorely disappointeD!!! I have been a humble and fred fan for years and i really don't know what station i will listen to now, but it certainly won't be mix 999---you people have no idea what you have done--howard i wish you and your family all the best and patiently await your return--wherever it will be--i will follow!!!!!

I was so shocked (I hadn't been listening to the radio in the a.m. for the last month)to find Humble gone. I have been a fan since Humble and Fred were together in the beginning. We need a resurrection

You are loved Humble -- you were so silly -- I loved that. Mostly the funniest and silliest with Fred. That is my bias... you guys just click.

    Miss you, L

Mad Dog and Billie is about as entertaining as listening to paint dry....I don't understand the logic in that station getting rid of Fred last year and finishing off the job with letting Humble go. The only time I ever tuned into that station was for the morning show because it certainly wasn't for the music format which is just brutal. I'm just glad I have my CD's for my morning commute-I didn't even bother spinning the dial to look for anything else because there's just no point! Morning radio is dead as far as I'm concerned....I hope Humble and Fred find a way to get back on the air, if they ever go sattelite, I'm in!

    I can't afford satalite radio but I would listen to them on the internet ... I just took the mix on line music survey and I think they have ideas about changing to hip hop judging from the songs they were getting me to listen to .... if that happens the mix is truly and completely dead ... I can't stand hip hop ... what do you think the chances of them bringing humble back??? And mad dog and billie are so boring ....,,,, how could they actually wake people up when they only put me to sleep . anyone found }
palitable morning shows to listen to in the mean time ... any sudgestions would be apprecuated my morings suck now ...

I have never considered satellite radio but at a reasonable price I would consider getting it for H&F (&J&BB). The conspiracy theorist in me wonders if this is what Standard had in mind all along. As Sirius, Standard and CBC are partners and HH is "still under contract" with Standard, HH could go to Sirius with few contractual issues. If Standard wanted to get a "hip hop" station in the T.O. market to appeal to the younger demographic and stop competing with Jack, by getting rid of H&F they get rid of whatever loyal following the Mix had, thus tanking the ratings and justifying the format change. Then, with the loyal H&F followers willing to subscribe to Sirius to get H&F, they accomplish two things: 1) get new paying subscribers to their satellite radio service that would not have otherwise subscribed (a la Howard Stern) and 2) justify the change in format and get into a younger demographic. (It's like the plan in the movie Major League where they got rid of their good players to kill fan interest and justify moving the Cleveland Indians out of town.) Or am I just too suspicious?

I've been listeneing to you since you began on CFNY. You've been wonderfully entertaining over these many years and I already miss your playful wit.

No reason to listen to Mix99 anymore!

I for one would consider Salellite radio if Humble and Fred were back on the air. It would take a lot for me to shell out the monthly charge, but H&F would make me think!

And I echo the Humble report comments...I catch a 7:58 Go train and I would wait in my car at 7:48 to hear the Humble Report. It was a great way to start my day...MD&B aren't cutting it for me.

Humble - talk to Freddie and consider satellite radio!

I haven't the slightest idea how satellite radio works or how to subscribe to it. However, if Humble and Fred were there, I'd look into it.

Here is an idea ... since you guys aren't doing anything right now ... why not do a moring show over the web ... I'm not a techie ... but could it be that difficult to set up just think you could do what ever you wanted ...play your own favorite songs ... my god humble you could play hip hop and I would listen ... start your own web radio station ... I bet you could do it ... and I am sure there are enough fans out there who would be willing to give you the support you needed to start up ... just think .. you could actually sell your humble and fred stock and it would be worth something .... consider it seriously ... I can't say much that hasn't already been said above. So ditto to all the sentiments above.

I don't normally participate in these things, but I feel really strongly about this one. It's good to know how many people are feeling the same disappointment, frustration, etc. that I am about Humble and Fred and Judy and Bingo being gone.

I am trying to find another station that actually has a genuinely funny morning show. Any suggestions? I can't fit satellite radio into my budget, but for the first time in over 10 years, I'm no longer interested in staying loyal to the Mix (or whatever they're calling themselves now). I guess at the age of 28, I have graduated from their listener demographic.

Humble/Fred/Judy/Bingo, you guys are the absolute best. Like most of your listeners, I feel like I know you and your families. I would switch in a heatbeat to any station that you were on, so please keep us updated. And thanks so much for the feedback and links you have already posted on this site.

Just wanted to thank Humble personally for the phone wake-up calls they had when my three teenagers had to be prodded out of bed. They were avid Humble and Fred listeners and what could have been better then having Humble and Fred wake my teenagers up in the morning. It worked and I thank you. As a teacher I had to leave the house before they had to be awake and a mother's fear is that her child (children would not get up for high school classes. But with your amazing service I was able to rest assured that you were taking care of it for me. Thanks Humble. better things are in store for you in your future. you will see.

I'm a lot older than Humble (or Fred)but I have been listening to one or both of them since they buried Humble in a box all those many years ago. I'm still really young at heart and no matter what station they were on, I seemed to follow them because of their wacky sense of humour. Tried finding out where Freddie was last year, but continued listening to 99.9 even though it was now Humble, Bingo Bob and Judy Croon. That was a good show, but it was never the same and I certainly don't seem to have aquired the same affinity to Mad Dog & Billy. I'll keep watching and as soon as I see that Humble has found a new job I'll have to adjust my car radio. In the meantime I'll just keep searching channels until I find something I like.

I was very sad to hear of Humble being fired from the Mix. I emailed the Mix prior to doing a google search to see if I could get some answers from somebody at the station. Of course, no response. I then decided to email one of the other dj's to see if I could get a response. Yeah! Finally somebody would respond. They confirmed what I already found out. After I told them how unhappy I was with the station, after which I said I only started to listen to them because of Humble, she asked me to give them another chance and asked me to not be mad or upset with them. They said it was poor listenership and this is why they got rid of Humble (big mistake) I have been listening to the Mix again for the last 2 weeks ( I've given them a chance) but it's not the same. I find the new morning show very boring and it puts me to sleep at work. Everytime I hear a listener call in and say how happy they are that Mad Dog and Billie are there, it makes me sick. I don't understand what all of these people out there see in these 2. Sure, they're really nice and they have great chemistry, but they don't make me laugh everyday like Humble did. Please Humble, stay in Toronto. Don't go back to Moosejaw. We'll miss you too much. I hope to hear you back on the radio soon. Let us know where you are and how you're doing.

Anyone remember the remix of Fatboy Slim's In Heaven - but with the words Humble and Fred instead of Fatboy Slim?

I've listened the H&F since CFNY, MoJO and the MIX. AT one point, I lived in Oregon and listened to them online. They were the only reason I tuned into the MIX and now I will have to find another station because Mad Dog & Billie are obnoxious and annoying. MIX Management: You goofed this time...admit your mistake and bring back H&F.

Again, ditto to the above comments. There is NOTHING left to listen to on Morning Radio....satellite/webcast/whatever, just bring the gang back!! I don't know much about satellite, but if it was more of Humble and Fred and everyone, I'd really consider it.

For what it's worth: I used to listen to Humble & Fred during the 90's on CFNY, they were awesome, but then a lot of things were more awesome back then. I probably sound old but the 90's were fucking magical compared to now maybe cuz Clinton was prez or something.

Anyway to answer the question: you guys should go on sirius but not at the same time as Howard Stern, don't compete. Stern has gotten better with the addition of Artie Lange and a mellowing of some of his coarser white trash habits.

I'd get satellite for that, you could do an afternoon or evening show.

What can I add…………….Mix what were your thinking???? Howard, Judy and Bob were the only reason I listened to the mix. The 7 songs played on a loop and/or listening to Steve Anthony listening to himself might have been your problem. The morning show was the only good thing the Mix had going for it…………..I have to admit, out of curiosity I did listen to Mad Dog and Billie for the first hour and found them to be as interesting as toast! Infact they were more irritating then entertaining. I erased the Mix from my Home and car first and then replaced our phone system at work with JackFM, no reason to punish our Customers or Clients by making them listen. I will be waiting for the gang to show up on another station (my new favorite station).

I can't believe this! I was getting annoyed with the DJ's being on vacation, as waking up just wasn't the same without Humble Howard and his crew. Then I returned from vacation last week and woke up to Mad Dog and Billie. I thought my radio was on the wrong station. All week I have been wondering what happened to Humble Howard until tonight when I did an internet seach and found out he was fired. I can't believe the radio station didn't let its listeners know. Perhaps they should have done a survey before making such a drastic move. I'm now shopping for a new radio station because Mad Dog and Billie do not entertain me in the least.

When the Humble Howard show was cancelled I angrily sent a nasty letter to the MIX but told myself I'd at least give Mad Dog and Billie a chance. Honestly - I can't believe how bad they are. They're not funny (I've never even smiled while listening) and they have absolutely no chemistry together. I can't believe that somebody would hire them for a morning show (just in general) - but as a replacement for Humble Howard? Even more ridiculous!

I have an hour commute to work in the morning - in that time I can go through the news cycle on 680 approximately 3 times - and even this is more interesting then Mad Dog and Billie. The Mix has permanently lost another listener.

Humble and Fred, gone? I feel like I'm in a 90's flashback. I listened to you guys on CFNY, I didn't move to mojo, I couldn't do it, and then by some happy miracle, you came back! And now you are gone again. And this time without any place to get my fix. Humble, Judy, Bingo, Fred, you have amazing chemistry together, and you know how to put a smile on everyone's face. (Or the occasional tear - sick kids radio-thon...)
Like your many fans, I too will no longer be listening to The Mix. I just can't get into Mad dog and billie. They really do not compare.
Conspiracy theories aside, I hope to hear your happy voices again soon. Even if I must pay for it.

Just so you know Humble..and since you asked, I am from the east coast and I know there are all kinds of jokes about that :) But at least I can say I have lived in Oakville enough years to be able to laugh at those jokes!
ON a more serious note, when I fist heard the reason for Humble being fired , the crapola about not enough listeners, my first reaction was.....OK so what is sarah cummings doing about that shince she is promotions and lorie Russel in sales and marketing department. IN my opinion, it is very conceivable that they might not be doing their jobs so well. And it is certainly not anything Bull-Dog and Billy-Goat can do anything about.......!!

I just wrote a very satisfying email to the program director at the MIX telling them that they have lost another listener until they bring back Humble (but Humble and Fred would be even better.)

I have been a faithful follower of Humble and Fred from CFNY to MOJO (yes, I was desperate enough to get my Humble and Fred fix that I listened to GUY radio), and finally to the MIX. I was willing to give Humble a try on his own last year and enjoyed the rapport with Judy and Bingo.
When I first turned on the radio, prepared to hear Humble after the "DJ vacation" and heard Mad Dog and Billie, I was shocked. I honestly tried every day for a week to get into them, but could only stand them for a mere 5 min.

I have found a decent station out of London for my morning drive, but it's not same without my beloved Humble.

Yet another Mix listener has jumped ship. I, like many others, no longer listen to 99.9. The only personality that gets a 2nd thought there is Freeway Frank. Now I'm locked on Chum, but only because I have to. I did attempt Mad Dog & Billie, but not for long. I hope Pat Holiday thought long & hard about this, because I can't see that it's been a wise move so far. Wherever you end up, Howard, I'll be lsitening. And all the better if Fred is by your side.

You know I started listening to Howard when he was at CFNY, long time ago, too long to want to tell anybody cause I can't be that old.

One day I emailed him about something and I was shocked to receive a response. What a genuine guy. Found out we had a few things in common, like smoking (and now evangelical non smoking!) flying, golf and some others. Started talking and before you know it we are now good friends (at least I hope so, I consider him a good friend, hopefully it is reciprocal). Randy and the kids are great, also becoming good friends. This thing at the MIX I do not get. The new show is not as good (I am being nice and proffessional) I only had to listen to it for 10 minutes one morning to find that out. I even had another freind call me and tell me they were going to listen to the new show anyway because they liked the station until they heard the new hosts dis H. That was enough, to this person, who has never met H that was like insulting a friend. Isn't it amazing how we all (his fans) feel like his friend. I felt that way even before I met him. Now that we are actual friends I feel a bit less weird about it!

Now I am rambling. I have stopped listening to the Mix, H was the only guy I could stand there anyway, does anybody actually like listening to Steve Anthony?.

I love reading all this, I feel like I am not the only one who wants to try to protect my friend Howard. Keep it up guys, tell the MIX what you think by not listening and maybe we will all get lucky and Howard will be back on the air soon so our mornings will not be so bleak.

Better yet how about some TV. In the meantime you can read him in the post.

BTW I challenge anyone to come up with a complaint about him being off the air from farther than one of my friends, Sonya from Paris, France, who called me to ask where he went. She told me it was the bit of Ontario she got to listen to every day and now she is pissed too!

The Mix obviously has its head up its ass. How many prominant politicians used the H&F platform to springbroad their campaigns?

H&F are connected to the pulse of the GTA and Greater Ontario. They are current, topical, and relevant...and pretty damn funny too.

I'm a teacher and am fortunate enough to take my summer holidays in the north, where they get 1 or 2 local stations...maybe. Imagine my surprise when I started back to work this week and could not find Humble on the Mix. I thought, oh maybe he's on vacation...but they didn't say they were covering for him. So I searched all the stations frantically, even waiting on the Jazz station to see if his voice came on! So I searched the INternet and am very sad and disappointed to find out that you have been let go. I'm not sure what I will do on my morning commute, you were the only guy I could really listen to. The rest drive me crazy! I followed you from 102.1, then 640 and then to the MIX. So sorry you are gone. I hope to hear your voice again soon...until then...I'll be playing alot of CD's on my drive!

    Thanks for all the laughs,
    Natalie

Man, I knew the Mix was up to no good with the vacation crap right from the start. Humble, as an American I listened to you when you first started on the Mix (when I lived in Buffalo), and when I married my Canadian wife and moved to Niagara Falls, ON I listened everyday. You are way too talented to not land on your feet, so I look forward to listening at your next gig. I too e-mailed the tools at the Mix to tell them that they F'd up big time!

Wow....what a shock it was when I returned to Toronto and tuned into my favorite morning show today! The disapointment was overwhelming when I realized that "Mad dog and billy" had taken over and humble was gone! They turned me off the Mix in about 30 seconds. Humble, you made the mornings bearable, thanks and good luck. James

I went away for the summer, and when I returned things were not as I had left them. The MIX was acting as if things were the same but there was no Humble Howard . . . It was like I was in Bizarro. I searched the web, but his whereabouts wasn't even addressed on the station's main page . . . (only stuff about some rabid dog???) It wasn't until I located this blog that I knew that his fate had been sealed by the gods of the station's administration.

Humble Howard is the funniest and most intelligent radio personality that I have had the pleasure to wake up to in the morning. Having intelligent radio is a brave move in a society that likes to dumb things down. I guess 99.9 lost it's nerve.

As for you Humble, you are too good to languish. I expect to hear you soon . . . but until we meet again, enjoy your girls.

As for me, the dial will no longer be tuned to 99.9.

School starts back again on Tuesday. I am looking forward to getting back into my classroom, but not to the drive in. My daughter and I are wondering what station we are going to listen to on our ride in everyday. The biggest problem with the MIX is with their advertising. They did not know how to promote a GREAT thing; instead of getting rid of your hosts, maybe you should have hired a new advertising team who knows how to promote fabulous!

Hey there! Add me to the list of those who miss Humble & Fred--not to mention Bob and Judy. When I moved back to Kitchener, I couldn't get the Mix reliably and as I expected I missed the gang. Now I'm not alone. I hope they all land on their feet. Come on down to Kitchener folks!

I just thought I would post here a copy of an email sent to the promo department at the mix a few minutes ago:

    To: promo@999mixfm.com
    Subject: Humble etc

    To Whom it May Concern (assuming someone may be concerned);

Sorry about this but my wife and I have now quit the station after more than 20 years of loyal listening. My wife even won a juke box from Don Daynard while he was there doing the "Looking Back" segments and he visited our home with the morning crew. We lasted through the loss of his crew to CHFI and the subsequent transitions through Humble to Anthony to Collins and back to Humble. It was a tragedy when you fired Fred...and now Judy and Humble!! That is it. They couldn't attract new listeners? Well, now you cannot even keep the old ones. We are through with the disloyalty...to your staff, your format and especially you loyal listeners!!

Please pass this message on to those that matter, or care. We will!

Silly silly exec's at MIX 99.9. WHAT.....were YOU thinking? I mean really......WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?

I only "officially" found out today (being the first day of school and having the radio to wake me up) that Humble at the MIX is no more. Hell, it took me all year to get over the fact that Feddy P was no longer sitting across from his buddy. Call me immature, but did I laugh OUT LOUD with some of the antics of Mr. Goohead. Never will I forget listening to the boyz all the way in to work, only to re-live the "outbursts" with my colleagues. It remains the best way to start a round table meeting and a great memory.

So I too, will tune out and wander the airwaves. The MIX is positively no longer an option. I am disgusted and saddened, with a huge amount of puzzlement and skepticism. Hmmm...I do recall that Mad Dog & Billie have been leap-froggin' all over the Toronto airwaves with not a whole heap of success and loyal listeners. To be fair, these radio exec's have also not given MD & B a lot of chances...bootin' Erin on her behind did not help your new gig and I assume this move will not bode well either given the postings on this site. Sorry guys, but c'mon. You were fab back in your debut at KISS but you are not in the same league as Humble. He is fluid with his delivery, laugh-out-loud funny and has a edge, wit and intelligence that makes even political discussions bearable and even, entertaining.

Here's what I think the only remedy is. Create a new station, bring back Humble & Fred, Judy & the Crew, play some good alternative and even some REAL retro and let's name it something like.....CFNY :)

Finally Howard, Say HI to Fred and I swear that I too, will follow and tune in wherever you go.

    With support & friendship,
    Lisa

The Humble Howard Show is the only radio morning show that I listen to on my drive to work. Now I'm stuck listening to all sorts of crap! Mad Dog and Billie is not as funny and entertaining as Humble Howard. Please bring back Humble Howard, Judy Croon and Bingo Bob! I am tired of this endless search every morning for an entertaining radio station to listen to.

Basically, there isn't much to add here. Reading all the above comments, pretty well explain how I feel.

Before I googled this morning I actually scanned through every frigging radio station on my way to work hoping to find the "Howard Stern" of Canada on one of them. No such luck.

I already e-mailed those jerks at 99.9 and hope that a lot of you do as well. Nobody can convince me that their ratings will actually improve with the recycled team of Mad Dog and Billy!! Give me a break.

Execs at 99.9, please get in touch with the real world out there. The program you are delivering now is just another mediocre politically correct program just like the rest of them, except worse.I guess for now I'll be listening to 104.5 CHUM again. At least until good old Howie resurfaces somewhere and there is no doubt in my mind that he will. The sooner the better.

The only time I listened to the radio was during the mornings and for teh past 13 years I have changed station to station following Humble and Fred. I now dread hearing my radio go off because of the boredom. I have stopped listening in the car because it doesn't make for a happy drive. I miss Humble and Fred. What a waste of talent! The mix sounds like crap now and they threw away their one good asset - what a bunch of morons!

I've enjoyed reading all of the postings by like-minded people! I just wish we could have done something to prevent the firings. I'm also facing a "lay-off" in the near future...luckily (?) we were given 3-4 months notice but still....big corporations suck with the impersonal way they seem to all handle these situations. Upside is...If I don't have to get up for work in the morning then I don't have to worry about which horrible morning show to complain about!
Humble and Fred and Bingo and Judy would be the only reason I'd wake up early again.

Humble, I've followed you around the dial, and listened to the show from start to finish every day. You and Judy always kept me laughing, and entertained. I recently returned from vacation, and was both shocked and disappointed to find "Mad Dog and Billie" when I turned on my radio a couple of weeks ago. I swore, and said "OK, who changed the radio station on me? I couldn't believe it when I discovered that wasn't the case. I have resigned from the On-line panel, because I no longer have any interest in what they play. I am still looking for a station to tune in to. Any suggestions? All the best Humble, and I hope you re-surface again real soon.

I hope it's good news Mike.

For all the other bloggers, please keep posting your comments here because I bet my bottom dollar that the execs from Mix 99.9 are logging on this site on a daily basis to see whether the Humble Howard & Co. fans finally have given up making nasty comments about their stupid decision.

    September 14, 2006 / 09:05

Robert, I hope the MIX execs care but I fear they are only concerned with the ratings, not with our anger/frustration/indignation/sadness/disbelief/despair.
...that said, I am inspired by your request so I'll add another two cents to the blog.

I have noticed that ever since my boycott of the MIX my fingers automatically move to the 99.9 preset on my car radio, but I am proud to say that I quickly realize the error of my ways and turn to JACK or Q (only when music is actually playing and not when Derringer or Watters are speaking). I have heard MD&B before as my wife listened to FLOW 92.5 before the format change and to CHFI so I heard MD&B during their brief stops at both stations. I was not impressed then and I am not interested in tuning in to hear them now. Viva Humble and Fred!

    What a rude awakening!
After returning from 2,5 month vacation in Europe, being jet-lagged as hell, I was looking forward to spending my sleepless mornings with Humble. I don't have to tell you I spend all morning switching the channels trying to find where has Humble gone!
Even though I don't really like mellow stuff they play at the Mix, I followed Humble and Fred from the Edge to the Mix. I'm sad to see Mix management doesn't recognize faithfull followers....Can't wait to hear Humble's new gig....as I'm sure there will be a new one. Keep us informed.

My husband and I have been listening to Humble and Fred for years and spent many rides into work laughing our bums off. It was nice to know they were always there in the morning. We never even considered listening to any other radio personalities because they didn't interest us. Now, the only thing to listen to in the morning is the news. That's exciting.

Bad move 99.9. Now the music has even changed. We don't even go there with the dial. They were truly funny.

Well, in reading between all the lines, if anyone has read the new 'news' item on humblehoward.com they will see there was some discussion about selling his house in Oakville and moving to Hamilton. Read Freddiep.ca and he says yesterday (as Mike did just a couple of posts up) say that H&F are going to be on Hamilton TV for a segment on Friday afternoon... Soo... is it going to be a TV show they do or a Standard Radio station in Hamilton???

I think it's pretty cool that a item can still be newsworthy two months after it was originally posted.

    Mix 99.9

Use to be the only radio station I would listen to in the morning, and I mean litteraly the only one.

When Fred mysteriously vanished I tried to take it in stride, and learned to cope with Howard, Judy, and Bob... it took awhile but I beleive they did an excellent job.

And then the vacation happened and when I heard "The DJ's are coming back, and Mix is introducing a Major Announcement", I had a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomache.

I got to learn to go with these feelings, Mad Dog and Billie - It's time to laugh again. Not once since they have dismally tried to fill the void left behind have I even chuckled.

I guess "Mix FM 99 point 9" is trying to play to a more simple minded, air headed demographic.

I really just can not digest this tripe that they are attempting to cram down our collective throats.

The hard edged whitty humour of the Humble and Fred show is sorely missed in my books.

Sorry to carry on like this but I needed to vent.

I will be watching this site and as soon as there is news of where Humble and Fred will go to, be it Satelite or Other, you have to beleive that I will damn the expence and subscribe.

Gods Speed Humble and Fred, here's to you.

Mornings are not the same! I used to look forward to being woken up by the sweet dulcit tones of Humble Howard et. al. Now? It's truly horrible. Mad Dog and Billy? Are they kidding? Humble and Freddy will always be remembered for the ability to be funny while not be jack asses like the new generation of shock DJs. Like Pete and Getes who came before them they will go down as legends and leave us before they should and on their own terms. Enjoyed the bit on CH tonight and loved the play on words. Maybe they are a little to smart for the general public and today dumb is cool.

Stephanie, did you notice they were live from the Oakville studio of CH?

No trip to the Hammer required.

    Stephanie
    September 15, 2006 / 20:03

Yes Mike... I did notice they were live at the Oakville office... and I do know that the trip to that part of d/t Oakville is more convenient for the likes of Freddie P than of the longer stretch down the 407 to 403.... I immediately sent a note to CH and when I clicked on the 530@chtv link it put me right into a 1230@chtv.ca email... made me think (and I also emailed Fred and Howard) that 'perhaps' they were going to be their own 5:30 show and Hebsie and Skelly were going to 12:30. Oh yes, perhaps I am reading WAY too much into this but I was just very happy to see them together and if you closed your eyes you could just imagine hearing them in the morning...

Thank you Mike. Honestly, if it weren't for you and the post back in July and the subsequent Google searches... we know no one would have seen Howard and Fred in the same picture today. You deserve to be called 'the Genius', even if the National Post doesn't think so.

I never thought I'd respond to one of these comment posts, but I miss hearing Humble Howard on 99.9 not to mention Judy and Bob who laugh at all the jokes. I knew something was up when Fred diaspeared, I thought it was the "pull my finger jokes" that ripped them apart or something?
I have to say I agree with all that is said above "I don't like change" I want my Humble and Fred back on the air.

    Hi Howard:

I truly can't take morning radio anymore. I wander aimlessly looking for something funny and intelligent that might come close to what you and Fred offered us. There is absolutely nothing out there! I can't tell you enough how much I miss you and Fred in my morning life. After listening to you for over 15 years, there is now a void I can't fill. All other morning shows have just immature crap programming with no focus. What I loved about your show is that it focused on immature crap! But that was what it was all about - having fun and not giving a crap about celebrities and what clothes they're wearing! I can't imagine the show that replaced yours lasting long. What was the MIX thinking? If you go on satellite, then I will buy the system immediately. Best wishes to you and Fred and your families, as always.

If you change cities, I will move to. As long as you bring back the pig wrestling!

    Thanks

I remember when the Mad Dog and Billie show began, replacing the Humble Howard show. Nothing against Mad Dog and Billie, but I suffered shock and withdrawal at the time. Worst of all, I sent an email to mix 999 to ask what was going on and got no explanation. After a year of listening to Mad Dog and Billie, I must say they are fine but are no Humble Howard morning show. I still miss Howard, Judy and Bob and think it is very unfair to remove these well-loved radio personalities without explanation. Going in a new direction? Give me a break!

I was'nt a listener of the mix but to find out another mainstay of toronto radio was let go from their job makes me wonder what's going on well maybe the mix will get the picture just like chfi with the whole Erin Davis ordeal i did'nt like Mad Dog and Billie on that station that's why I switched to ezrock when Mike Cooper was still on there and returned to Chfi when Erin went back and Mike Joined her.

I too remember being shocked when I heard Mad Dog & Billie instead of Humble Howard the morning they took over. I lasted exactly 3 mornings listening to their inane, fake patter and on the 4th I found out Humble wasn't coming back. I left the station that day and have never been back. Not even in the afternoon or weekends.
Anyone know if Humble is around on any station now (April 2008). It'd rock if he AND Fred teamed up and went back on the air somewhere.
