Turin or Torino?

Olympics

Turin is the host city of the 2006 Winter Olympics, taking place February 10 to 26, 2006.  With Canada aiming for another gold medal in men's hockey, Turin has been on my mind lately.  Or is it Torino?

Turin is the english name of the Italian city of Torino.  Traditionally, we refer to cities by their english name.  This is why we refer to Rome and not Roma.  The 2006 Winter Olympics will be known as the Turin games.

Having said that, I keep calling them the Torino games.  In fact, I did so recently in this entry about Bryan McCabe.  I never think of the Rome games as the Roma games, but this seems different somehow.  For one, the official logo blares the name Torino at you.  That logo is everywhere.  Secondly, the name Torino looks and sounds a lot like the name of the greatest city in the world, Toronto.  It may be the closest we get to hosting one of these things.

Turin or Torino?  La scelta è la vostra!
