Halloween Controversy

Halloween Controversy

It seems Halloween falling on a Sunday has stirred up a little controversy.  Bible thumpers are uncomfortable with the "pagan" rituals of Halloween occurring on the Sabbath.  A number of cities and towns have decided trick or treating should take place on Saturday instead.

I understand this being a big deal in the Bible Belt of the Southern United States, but my friend from Whitby, Ontario tells me they're trick or treating on October 30 instead of the 31st because of this.  All Halloween is these days is a chance for the kids to dress up and score free candy.  There's nothing unholy about it.  James is very excited about being a lion for Halloween and he'll be going out for the first time this Sunday.  That's right, he'll be going around this Sunday October 31st and there's nothing sinister about it.

I half expect Mayor David Miller to make some proclamation about what day Torontonians can expect trick or treaters at the door.  I'm sure it's still October 31, but you can never overestimate the power of the Christian right.  They may cancel it all together.
