Red Hot Chili Peppers - Johnny, Kick A Hole In The Sky
I've written about Mother's Milk before. It's still my go-to Red Hot Chili Pepper album. But, I rarely listen to it in the winter. It's a summer disc.

Rumour has it summer is coming. It feels like a "Johnny, Kick A Hole In The Sky" day.

The Killjoys - Rave + Drool
Listening to Canadian new rock radio in the 1990s meant hearing a lot of The Killjoys' "Today I Hate Everyone" and "Dana". I still throw those two tunes on the odd playlist.

Their third big Canadian radio single was "Rave + Drool". Would anyone outside of Canada be familiar with The Killjoys?

The Watchmen - Stereo
I'm sharing this great tune from Winnipeg's The Watchmen because their drummer, Sammy Kohn, wrote me about this song earlier today.

One of a million, one of a million...

Tom Waits - I Don't Wanna Grow Up
My favourite Tom Waits era was his Island years which began with Swordfishtrombones in 1983. In 1992, his Island years gave us "I Don't Wanna Grow Up", a song you likely know best as a Ramones tune.

Like most of Waits' best songs, the cover gained more prominence than the original. I'll take the crunchy, gruff and rough original, thank you very much.

The Remake Of A Remake (All I Need) - Wale f. Tawiah

The Remake Of A Remake (All I Need) - Wale f. Tawiah
I was reading a list of the best albums of 2008 the other day, and it mentioned an album entitled "The Mixtape About Nothing" by a rapper named Wale. "The Mixtape About Nothing" included samples from Seinfeld. That's all I needed to hear...

It turns out I really dig "The Mixtape About Nothing", and amidst all the rapping and Seinfeld samples is this tune with Tawiah called "The Remake Of A Remake".

Let's quickly review the original, remake and remake of a remake in question. "You're All I Need to Get By" is a song recorded by the American R&B/soul duo Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell. It was the basis for the 1995 single "I'll Be There for You/You're All I Need to Get By" by Method Man and Mary J. Blige, a song I still adore to this day. Then, we have this... still sweet and on my iPod right now.

Squeeze - Tempted
I realize it's not Wednesday, but Mike from Lowville just reminded me that I forgot to share an MP3 yesterday. Oops.

Let's go back to 1981 with this great Squeeze track. Which song is better: "Tempted" or "Cool for Cats"?

When In Rome - The Promise
You don't hear this great 80s track often these days. It popped in my head this morning, so you're all getting it now.

Little Green Bag - The George Baker Selection
On Tuesday nights, after my volleyball games, I go straight home to join the family viewing of American Idol. I can never explain why I enjoy that show. It's the only reality show I watch, and it's cheesy karaoke. It's nothing I'd ever actually go out of my way to hear, but we don't miss an episode.

Part of the allure is that the kids love it. They know the competitors, have their favourites, enjoy the tunes and enjoy the judges commentary. I can't blame it all on the kids, however, because my wife and I watched this show together before the kids ever caught a glimpse of Simon. I think I enjoy the kitschy quality of American Idol. I think it's a wonderful guilty pleasure, a silly escape from the heavier television fare I typically enjoy.

Quentin Tarantino seems drawn to AI for similar reasons. He too never misses an episode, and last night he was on the show coaching the competitors as they sang songs from movies.

I love Tarantino films. I absolutely love them. All of 'em. I love Tarantino movie soundtracks just as much. My favourite song from a Tarantino film might just be "Little Green Bag" by The George Baker Selection.

Was Nickelback Always Bad? I Say No...

Nickelback - Old Enough
Today, Nickelback is exhibit A in arguments as to why popular rock music today sucks. I'm as guilty as anyone. Earlier this week, I dropped the term "Nickelback" as a negative, explaining why I didn't watch a minute of the Juno Awards.

It wasn't always this way. I distinctly remember an 18-month period after Nickelback released The State when they were pretty okay. They might not have been the coolest band on the planet, but The State was a solid album and their two Edgefest appearances afterwards were enjoyable.

It's acceptable to trash the mega-selling Nickelback machine today, but go back and listen to "Breathe", "Leader of Men", "Worthy to Say" and "Old Enough" and tell me it was so terrible. In fact, here's "Old Enough" right here. Not bad, eh?

Nena - 99 Luftballons
When I make an 80s mix, this song is a staple. It still sounds surprisingly fresh.

When making an 80s mix with Nena, one must use the German version and not the English version. Using the English version will expose you as the wanker you are.
