play Grapes Of Wrath - All The Things I Wasn't
It's hard to believe Kelowna's Grapes of Wrath released the most excellent "All The Things I Wasn't" over 20 years ago.

It still holds up.

play Joy Division - Transmission
Ian Curtin killed himself 30 years ago yesterday. He was Joy Division's songwriter and lyricist and he took his life on the eve of Joy Division's first North American tour.

A few Joy Division tunes seem to always make my playlists. "Atmosphere" and "Love Will Tear Us Apart" are great, but I like to start with "Transmission".

play The Hold Steady - Stay Positive
Last week, Hockey Night in Canada opened with this tune. It worked perfectly against a montage of action from the best sports has to offer: the NHL playoffs.

The Hold Steady is a Brooklyn-based rock band comprising Craig Finn, Tad Kubler, Galen Polivka and Bobby Drake.

'Til Tuesday - Voices Carry

MP3I share an MP3 from my collection every Wednesday. You have seven days to grab this week's MP3. Please right-click your mouse and select "Save Link As..." or "Save target as..." so you can download it to your PC before playing.

play 'Til Tuesday - Voices Carry
Last week I wrote about the Twitter fight between Ice T and Aimee Mann. If you don't know Aimee Mann from her work on the Magnolia soundtrack, and if you're my age or older, you may remember her as the lead singer of 'Til Tuesday.

The definitive 'Til Tuesday track is "Voices Carry", mainly because it had a great video that was played ad nausea and that very cool part near the end when Aimee yells "He said, shut up! He said, shut up! Oh God, can't you keep it down?"

play Frank Black - Headache
My absolute favourite post-Pixies song from Black Francis... I mean, Frank Black is "Headache" from Teenager of the Year.

If you haven't heard it in a while, you'll be surprised by how good it still sounds today.

I always liked this song from OMD.

The song is named after the USAAF B-29 Superfortress which dropped "Little Boy", the first atomic bomb to be used in an act of War, on the Japanese city of Hiroshima at the end of WWII.

play The White Stripes - Black Math Live
The White Stripes have released a documentary film and accompanying live album entitled "Under Great White Northern Lights" which documents their 2007 tour across Canada.

I'm enjoying the live album and I'm sharing "Black Math" because it's one of my favourite White Stripes tunes.

The White Stripes: The best band of the past decade. Agree or disagree?

play Corey Hart - Sunglasses at Night
In a decade ruled by Coreys, this was my favourite of all the Corey songs.

26 years after it's initial release, it still sounds great.

K'naan - Wavin' Flag

MP3I share an MP3 from my collection every Wednesday, but I forgot to do it yesterday so you get this on a Thursday. You have seven days to grab this week's MP3. Please right-click your mouse and select "Save Link As..." or "Save target as..." so you can download it to your PC before playing.

K'naan - Wavin' Flag
I didn't like this song for the longest time, and then I heard my son singing it. I then spun it again with an open mind, and suddenly I liked it.

This isn't the first time I disliked a slice of Cancon until it grew on me. The same thing happened with Bedouin Soundclash.

Neil Young - Heart of Gold
CTV is playing their Olympic anthem ad nauseum. It's called "I Believe" and it's sung by Nikki Yanofsky and CTV likes to set montages to it every time a Canadian reaches the podium. Essentially, CTV takes these inspiring, amazing Canadian moments of triumph and tarnishes them by tying them to this awful tune.

When a Canadian wins gold at these Olympic games, I'd much rather hear Neil Young's "Heart of Gold". CTV, this one's for you.
