Desmond Dekker - Isrealites
I must confess, I didn't discover Desmond Dekker's work until he passed away in 2006. His biggest hit was "Israelites" and it's a very cool tune. It's become an iPod favourite of mine.

The Living End - Roll On
I saw these guys open for Green Day and they were great. This is one of my favourite songs from this Aussie band.

Only Love Can Break Your Heart and Skates

MP3I share an MP3 from my collection every week. You have seven days to grab this week's MP3. Please right-click your mouse and select "Save Link As..." or "Save target as..." so you can download it to your PC before playing.

» Neil Young - Only Love Can Break Your Heart
» Hayden - Skates
During the long drive home from camping last week, I had my iPod on shuffle. At one point, Neil Young's "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" came on, immediately followed by Hayden's "Skates". The combination struck me as ideal.

Both songs are from great Canadian folk-rockers who aren't afraid of the harmonica and both songs are about heartbreak. "Skates", in particular, never fails to get me with that "I will skate as far as it takes, to bring her back home" line. If you've never heard "Skates" before, you're in for a treat.

It's 2-for-1 Thursday. Get 'em while they're hot.

Nirvana - Marigold
This is the only Nirvana song written and sung by Dave Grohl. It never appeared on an album, just the "Heart Shaped Box" single. It's sweet and was a sign of good things to come from the Foo Fighters.

He was the freakin' drummer!?!?!

The Diodes - Tired of Waking Up Tired

MP3I share an MP3 from my collection every Wednesday. You have seven days to grab this week's MP3. Please right-click your mouse and select "Save Link As..." or "Save target as..." so you can download it to your PC before playing.

The Diodes - Tired of Waking up Tired
This song made my definitive list of the 100 greatest songs recorded by Canadians. The Diodes were pioneers of the Toronto punk scene. From Wikipedia:

The Diodes were a Canadian punk/new wave band formed in 1976. They released four albums: Diodes (1977), Released (1979), Action-Reaction (1980) and Survivors (1982). One of the first Toronto bands playing that style of music. The Diodes helped foster the scene in the city. They opened the first Canadian punk nightclub in 1977, called Crash 'n' Burn, where many of the city's punk bands at that time played. The first band to play the club was The Nerves (Peter Case, Jack Lee, Paul Collins), on a double bill with The Diodes.

I love this tune. Enjoy.

The Kooks - Young Folks
You remember "Young Folks" as the Peter Bjorn and John hit from a couple of years ago. Victoria Bergsman was the highlight of this catchy track, but I digress...

I'm sharing The Kooks' cover because as we discuss CFNY and Alan Cross' departure I commented that they don't care about the old folks.

Cinderella - Bad Seamstress Blues / Fallin' Apart at the Seams

MP3I share an MP3 from my collection every Wednesday. You have seven days to grab this week's MP3. Please right-click your mouse and select "Save Link As..." or "Save target as..." so you can download it to your PC before playing.

Bad Seamstress Blues/Fallin' Apart at the Seams
Cinderella's Last Cold Winter came out in 1988 and, at the time, I was a big fan. The big hits were "Don't Know What You Got (Till It's Gone)" and "Gypsy Road", but my favourite track was the unheralded "Bad Seamstress Blues / Fallin' Apart at the Seams". I still love that song. Have a listen and tell me what you think.

Emm Gryner - Big Bang Baby
My buddy and Raging Storm teammate Mike Kic turned me on to the sounds of Emm Gryner. On one album, she covered a bunch of songs to give them a feminine flavour. She called this album "Girl Versions", and this is an STP cover from that CD.

Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Piece of Crap
I remember Q107 playing this Sleeps with Angels cut and I instantly liked the punky simplicity of it. For the past several years, this song has been a bit of an inside joke with my friend Scott and I. If something wasn't working as it should, usually a piece of Microsoft software, we'd rant about it in "Piece of Crap"-like fashion and conclude that it was "a piece of crap... PIECE OF CRAP!"
