M.I.A. - $20
When I started digging M.I.A.'s "Paper Planes," I gave Kala a listen. Kala is a great deal more than "Paper Planes." One great track on this stellar album is "$20".

"$20" brings in the Pixies' "Where's Is My Mind" and the effect is pretty sweet. Check it out.

The Pursuit of Happiness - Consciousness Raising As a Social Tool
When I threw down my ten favourite Canadian albums, The Pursuit of Happiness' Love Junk was #4. One tune on that album, "I'm An Adult Now", was one of my Ten Canadian Tracks. Here's another song from that album, "Consciousness Raising As a Social Tool".

Miles Davis - John McLaughlin

MP3I share an MP3 from my collection every Wednesday. You have seven days to grab this week's MP3. Please right-click your mouse and select "Save Link As..." or "Save target as..." so you can download it to your PC before playing.

Miles Davis - John McLaughlin
I remember as a kid seeing Bitches Brew in my father's record collection and being surprised an album name could have such a bad word in the title.

When I grew up I learnt Bitches Brew is one of those albums you have to have in your collection if you want to be considered cool. Almost every list of the best albums has Miles Davis' Bitches Brew in it, and for good reason. It was groundbreaking.

I'm sharing "John McLaughlin" from the 2nd of the double album. Why am I sharing "John McLaughlin" instead of "Bitches Brew" or "Pharaoh's Dance"? The answer is simple. "John McLaughlin" is the only track on the double album that's under ten minutes long.

Nirvana - Here She Comes Now (Demo, 1990)

Nirvana - Here She Comes Now (Demo, 1990)
It's hard to believe "Here She Comes Now" is from the 60s. The Velvet Underground were so far ahead of their time, there's little wonder why they missed out on commercial success.

This week's MP3 is a demo version of Nirvana covering The Velvet Underground's "Here She Comes Now". Enjoy.

Transplants - Diamonds And Guns
Some songs can survive on hook alone. Heck, some songs don't just survive on a killer hook, but they thrive and prosper.

"Diamonds and Guns" is a song from The Transplants that came out in 2002, but thanks to a great piano hook and "woo woo" vocal samples, I'm still playing it all the time.

I was always surprised this wasn't a bigger hit.

Al Green - Here I Am (Come And Take Me)
Kids today are losing their soul. Ask that 25 year old you work with about Wilson Pickett, Sam Cooke or Al Green. They won't have a clue who you're talking about, but they know their T-Pain and Akon, that's for sure.

I love this Al Green song from '73. But then again, who doesn't?

Re-Flex - The Politics Of Dancing
With both a Canadian and American federal election looming, this song seems appropriate. Return to 1983 with Re-Flex's one and only hit, "The Politics of Dancing".

Tones on Tail - Go!
There are two sure-fire ways to revisit 1984. You can don a #22 Rick Vaive Leafs jersey or you can get down to "Go!" from Tones on Tail.

Here's a little about Tones on Tail from Wikipedia.

Tones on Tail was a musical side project created by Daniel Ash of Bauhaus along with friend and 'Bauhaus roadie' Glenn Campling in 1982. After the demise of Bauhaus in 1983, they were joined by drummer Kevin Haskins. The band folded in 1984 shortly before Ash and Haskins went on to form Love and Rockets. Glenn Campling was also responsible for the cover art of Bauhaus' first full release, In the Flat Field.

Johnny Cash - The Man Comes Around
I just finished watching the 7-part miniseries from HBO about the United States Marine Corps' 1st Reconnaissance Battalion during the Iraq war's first phase in 2003. It's called "Generation Kill" and it was based on the book of the same name by Evan Wright.

I enjoyed the series, although it scared the shit out of me. The final episode ends with a video produced by one of the marines set to the song "The Man Comes Around" by Johnny Cash. The song was a perfect conclusion to seven hours in the wilderness.

Here's the scene, if you're interested.
