SLS ~ Smells Like Sour
I'm submitting a song for SLS20 consideration. I'm submitting "Detroit '67" by Sam Roberts.
Yes, I'm nominating "Detroit '67", but I'm thinking about "Bridge to Nowhere". Every time I see or read about Sarah Palin, which is all too often, I think about Sam Roberts' "Bridge to Nowhere". Here's a taste of the lyrics:
She says you're on a bridge to nowhere and you're gettin' there fast
Put it in the past, put it in the past
If this is a race then I hope you come last
You're on a bridge to nowhere and you're gettin' there fast
The McCain~Palin ticket is trying to use the Alaskan bridge to nowhere as her Maverick mark, but they fail to note her flip-flop. She was for it before she was against it.
Sam Roberts got it right. If this is a race then I hope they come last.
I'm submitting a song for SLS20 consideration. I'm submitting "Viva La Vida" by Coldplay.
Someone came up to me the other day and said the new Coldplay song was the best Coldplay song they had ever heard. I found this shocking. I like "Viva La Vida" as much as the next guy, but I didn't even feel compelled to nominate it for SLS consideration.
My brain quickly ran through the songlist of Parachutes. Surely "Don't Panic" is a better song. "Trouble" and "Yellow" are as good, if not better. And there are several song on A Rush of Blood to the Head that are in the same ballpark.
Then, I listened to "Viva La Vida" again. It's very good. It's no "Don't Panic", but it's most definitely worthy of SLS consideration.
I'm submitting a song for SLS20 consideration. I'm submitting "Inside the Fire" by Disturbed.
In the early years of SLS, Disturbed was a staple. "Down With The Sickness", "Prayer", "Remember" and "Liberate" all made the cut. Then, things quieted down on the Disturbed front.
This song has that same catchy intensity as those earlier hits.
I'm submitting a song for SLS20 consideration. I'm submitting "Given Up" by Linkin Park.
You're entitled to hate Linkin Park. Really, it's okay. It's an easy band to hate on and there's no way digging a band this mainstream is cool. And being cool is very, very important.
As I age, I realize trying hard to be cool is very uncool. The cool thing to do is not care if the tune you're digging is cool. I've been digging "Given Up" since the first time I heard it many weeks ago, and I'm still enjoying the clapping intro and Chester's 17 second scream.
It's not from a band nobody's heard of and it's not even that fresh but it makes me happy and that's pretty damn cool.
I'm submitting a song for SLS20 consideration. I'm submitting "Wild International" by One Day as a Lion.
If you haven't yet heard, One Day as a Lion is Zach de la Rocha from Rage Against the Machine and Jon Theodore from The Mars Volta. It's a great sound, right up my alley.
This tune makes me wish new Rage Against The Machine was on its way. Last I checked, they were touring but not recording. Let's hope that changes.
I'm submitting a song for SLS20 consideration. I'm submitting "Gamma Ray" by Beck.
This is the first single from Beck's new album Modern Guilt, produced by Beck and Danger Mouse. I've been a big Beck fan since Mellow Gold and at least three or four cuts from that album still make it on my road trip playlist. Believe it or not, Beck is now 38, but he still looks 21.
And no, this isn't an official video, but it should be.
I'm submitting a song for SLS20 consideration. I'm submitting "Oblivion" by Wintersleep.
These cats are from Halifax and I've been singing this tune all week. It's a cool video, too.
I'm submitting a song for SLS20 consideration. I'm submitting "Let It Die" by the Foo Fighters.
Here's the deal... We at SLS have this little rule that says each artist can only be represented once on each edition of SLS. "Long Road to Ruin" was pegged to appear on SLS19 so there was no room for "Let It Die". However, "Let It Die" is such a cool track by one of my favourite bands, so I'm going to see if it has the legs to make SLS20.
It's not exactly fresh, but I'm still digging it.
I'm submitting a song for SLS20 consideration. I'm submitting "Love Is Noise" by The Verve.
My wife will be happy there's new music by The Verve. This tune is the first single off their new album, their first album of new material since Urban Hymns, an album she loved. I can't believe Urban Hymns came out eleven flippin' years ago. That simply cannot be, can it?
I'm submitting a song for SLS20 consideration. I'm submitting "2 and 15/16ths" by USS.
I love this song. It's the second single from USS (Ubiquitous Synergy Seeker) and I think it's fantastic. It was great live, too.
