SLS ~ Smells Like Sour

The Negotiations Are Underway

SLSIt's that time of year again. It's time to put the latest edition of SLS to bed.

Mark and I are currently involved in some pretty heavy duty negotiations as we shape this thirteenth installment. We'll finalize the 80 minutes early next week and I'll post the final songlist here. In the meantime, you might want a crash course on SLS.

Stay tuned. SLS13 is gonna rock!

SLS Submission

SLS SubmissionI recently submitted a tune for SLS13 consideration. I submitted "All These Things That I've Done" from The Killers.

Admittedly, I didn't dig this tune at first. Then, all of a sudden, I started to really like it. Then there's that whole "I've got soul but I'm not a soldier" part with the background singers and BAM! - I'm nominating it for SLS13 consideration.

Did The Killers slip in under the SLS13 wire? Maybe...

SLS13 If It Was Released Today

SLSBefore we proceed, have you read the guide to SLS? If you haven't, reading it's a prerequisite to continue.

Although there are about six weeks to go before SLS13 is released, I've got a great looking playlist that comes in at a whisker under the 80 minute maximum. I suspect a song or two will arise in the next month to supplant one of these, but if SLS13 was released today and I had my say, these are the tracks that would make the cut.

  • The Mars Volta - The Widow
  • The Arcade Fire - Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)
  • The White Stripes - Blue Orchid
  • Louis XIV - Finding Out True Love Is Blind
  • System of a Down - B.Y.O.B.
  • Queens of the Stone Age - Little Sister
  • Foo Fighters - Best Of You
  • Audioslave - Be Yourself
  • Custom - USA
  • Hot Hot Heat - Goodnight Goodnight
  • Franz Ferdinand - The Dark Of The Matinee
  • Modest Mouse - The World At Large
  • Beck - E-PRO
  • Weezer - Beverly Hills
  • Metric - Dead Disco
  • Billy Talent - Nothing To Lose
  • Jakalope - Feel It
  • Kasabian - Club Foot
  • The Marble Index - Not So Bright
  • Doctor - What Makes You Think He's Lucky?
  • Garbage - Why Do You Love Me?

When 21 songs come in at under 80 minutes, you know you're in an era of short songs. In fact, four songs are under three minutes and another seven are under four minutes long. Only The Mars Volta and The Arcade Fire creep over the five minute mark coming in at 5:52 and 5:13 respectively.

The Negotiations

SLSEvery six months, my friend Mark and I get together, usually at a Tim Hortons, and bless the SLS playlist. Prior to this ritual, via email and instant messenger, we negotiate.

Each edition of SLS is to be no longer than 80 minutes long. Which songs will make up that 80 minutes is something we must agree upon. Thankfully, we both share the same vision of SLS meaning we're on the same wave length over 90% of the time. Sometimes, however, we have very different opinions about a song or two. When this happens, the negotiates are rapid and fierce.

SLS13 is due at the end of June. I just whittled down the 80 minutes of tunes I'd like to see making up this installment, but I've left a song Mark digs off the list. There's no room for the unfulfilling, mediocre "The Hand That Feeds" from Nine Inch Nails on my list. I'm anticipating quite the battle.

If you could throw only one song on a mix right now, and your choices were "The Hand That Feeds" from Nine Inch Nails or "Tonight Tonight" from Hot Hot Heat, which one would you choose? For me, it's not even close.

SLS Submission

SLS SubmissionI recently submitted a tune for SLS13 consideration. I submitted "B.Y.O.B" from System of a Down.

"Cigaro" was leaked via the Internet earlier in the year and I linked to it and enjoyed the hell out of it, but it wasn't System of a Down's first single off their new album. "B.Y.O.B" is and it's typically manic, fun and thought provoking.

System of a Down is consistently awesome.

SLS Submission

SLS SubmissionI recently submitted a tune for SLS13 consideration. I submitted "Best of You" from the Foo Fighters.

I just love it. I blast it when I hear it and it puts a smile on my face. It's just a great little rock song from the Foo and it's going on SLS13 for sure. Damn, SLS13 is going to be strong. I suspect a number of quality tunes will be left on the cutting room floor to come in under 80 minutes.

SLS Submissions

SLS SubmissionI recently submitted a couple of tunes for SLS13 consideration. I submitted "Finding Out True Love Is Blind" from Louis XIV and "Goodnight Goodnight" from Hot Hot Heat.

I heard "Finding Out True Love Is Blind" a few times and each time thought "this is really good, perfect for SLS, who the hell is it?". It turns out it's Louis XIV and worthy of our strong consideration.

Now this is a delayed reaction. I was first sent the MP3 for Hot Hot Heat's "Goodnight Goodnight" about two months ago. I listened eagerly because I've enjoyed previous singles from this band, and I liked it, but I was sure it wasn't SLS material because it's quite poppy. Two months later, I'm really enjoying "Goodnight Goodnight" and it might slip in there. It's on the bubble.

SLS Submission

SLS SubmissionI recently submitted a tune for SLS13 consideration. I submitted "Blue Orchid" from The White Stripes.

I heard this song for the first time Friday afternoon and the first thing that struck me was how short it was. I've heard it a few more times over the weekend and I'm digging it. It's got a fantastic crunchy guitar with a cool all around sound. The two and a half minutes is perfect too because it means we'll be able to cram more awesome into SLS13.

SLS Submission

SLS SubmissionI recently submitted a tune for SLS13 consideration. I submitted "Be Yourself" from Audioslave.

Of all the great grunge rockers I've enjoyed through the years, nobody can touch the voice of Chris Cornell. He's great once again on "Be Yourself", a definite sing-alonger. SLS13 keeps getting better and better...

Half Way There

SLSWith March winding down we're half way there. SLS12 wrapped up just before Christmas and we'll be unveiling the songs for SLS13 at the end of June. For the unaware, there's an SLS guide.

Looking over my notes it appears we're in pretty good shape. There are some great tunes on the short list and I suspect we'll hear a bunch more before this six month period expires. For those playing along at home, here are the tunes that are getting serious consideration for SLS13.

  • The Mars Volta - The Widow
  • The Arcade Fire - Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)
  • Metric - Dead Disco
  • System of a Down - Cigaro
  • Queens of the Stone Age - Little Sister
  • Custom - USA
  • Franz Ferdinand - The Dark Of The Matinee
  • Modest Mouse - The World At Large
  • Beck - E-PRO
  • Weezer - Beverly Hills
  • Billy Talent - Nothing To Lose
  • Jakalope - Feel It
  • The Marble Index - Not So Bright
  • Doctor - What Makes You Think He's Lucky?
  • Garbage - Why Do You Love Me?
