Hockey Playoff Pool

Pool Update: Day Forty Three

Playoff PoolThe Calgary Flames have advanced to the Stanley Cup finals. With a low payroll and tremendous work ethic, this underdog has captured the heart of Canada as we seek to return the cup to the true north strong and free for the first time since 1993. The elimination of San Jose means two competitors in our 2004 playoff pool are left without a player remaining. Joe and Stefan are finished.

This is good news for Pops who is trying to avoid becoming the first person to go from first to worst. Pops is currently two points behind Stefan so a big night from his Philly duo and he'll be out of the basement. Meanwhile, at the top of the food chain, Marc collected another two points to move within one of Alexi.

Pool Update: Day Forty Two

Playoff PoolTampa Bay is now one win away from their first ever Stanley Cup Final. It's not fair that fans of the Tampa Bay Lightning, Anaheim Mighty Ducks, Carolina Hurricanes and Florida Panthers will have recent Stanley Cup memories of their favourite team while a guy like me has suffered three decades without that joy. It's not fair.

Tampa Bay's victory is good news for Alexi and bad news for Ryan in our 2004 playoff pool.

Pool Update: Day Forty One

Playoff PoolCalgary is now only one win away from a birth in the Stanley Cup finals. If someone had told me six months ago that Calgary would be playing for the cup I would never have believed it. Marc owns Calgary, so he's pulled just a little closer to Alexi in our 2004 playoff pool.

Pool Update: Day Forty

Playoff PoolBoth series are now tied at two. Calgary seemed to have all the momentum taking the first two games on the road but the Sharks have bitten back by taking a couple in Cowtown. The end result is Marc has inched even closer to Alexi in the battle for first in our 2004 playoff pool.

Pool Update: Day Thirty Nine

Playoff PoolMuch to my chagrin, Philadelphia has managed to tie up their series with Tampa Bay. The effect on our 2004 playoff pool was minimal, but my two points did boost me into sole possession of fourth. Yay!

Pool Update: Day Thirty Seven

Playoff PoolIt's looking more and more like Alexi and Marc are going to be competing for first and second. I'm not counting Ryan out yet, but Philadelphia advancing is essential to his cause.

Pool Update: Day Thirty Five

Playoff PoolI can get behind this Calgary team. If you exclude my Toronto Maple Leafs, I'm a fan of Canadian-based teams. Having said that, I can't root for the Ottawa Senators because I can't stand them. Rooting for the Montreal Canadiens is difficult too because they are our historical rivals. That leaves me with the Vancouver Canucks, Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames.

With the Flames up 2-0 and heading for home, it looks good I'll have a rooting interest in the Stanley Cup finals. Marc drafted the only Calgary player, and he's now sitting pretty in a tie for second.

Pool Update: Day Thirty Four

Playoff PoolPhiladelphia won big last night to tie their series at one. Anthony had the biggest night in our 2004 playoff pool but he's so far down he's got to reach up to touch the ground.

I received word from someone who competed in our annual playoff pool for years before leaving Toronto for a job waaaaay up North. Jomp says he's doing well and following along on the web. This entry is dedicated to Jomp...a good soldier who fought the good fight.

Pool Update: Day Thirty Three

Playoff PoolI'm hoping for a Calgary - Tampa Bay final. I'm rooting for Tampa Bay because I can't stand Bobby Clarke and that damn Flyers team and I'm rooting for Calgary because they're a Canadian-based franchise. A Canadian-based team hasn't won the Stanley Cup since 1993, the year my Maple Leafs should have been crowned champion.

Calgary defeated San Jose in overtime yesterday and Marc benefitted the most in our 2004 playoff pool. In the entire pool only one Calgary Flame and four San Jose Sharks were even drafted.

Pool Update: Day Thirty Two

Playoff PoolA well rested Tampa Bay team took game one of the Eastern Conference finals yesterday afternoon. Only two participants in our 2004 playoff pool actually secured points from the victory. Alexi extended his lead and Neil moved into a comfortable seventh place.
