20 Celebrity Deaths of Significance in 2009

bereavementAs 2009 draws to a close, you'll likely be seeing a lot of celebrity death lists, remembering those who died throughout the year. For as long as I've had a personal home page on the interweb, I've marked celebrity passings. You can read them all at https://www.torontomike.com/rest_in_peace/.

Here are twenty celebrities of note who passed away in 2009.

The Death of Childhood Memories

Here are ten deaths that in one way or another represented my fleeting youth. The older we get, the more icons from our childhood loves we lose. Still, we lost most of the following far too early.

Other Significant Celebrity Passings

There were a number of significant celebrity deaths in 2009. Here are ten more who left us in 2009.

Abe Vigoda, however, is alive.

The 100 Best Band Names of All Time

MusicThere's a link going around that lists the 100 best band names of all time.

Here's their top 10:

1. Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem (Leave it to The Muppets to come up with the BEST BAND NAME OF ALL TIME.)
2. Guided By Voices (This always seemed like the secret to Robert Pollard’s prolific and bizarre output.)
3. Joy Division (The name came from the 1955 novel House of Dolls in which a Nazi concentration camp had a prostitution arm.)
4. Led Zeppelin
5. A Tribe Called Quest
6. 13th Floor Elevators
7. Godspeed You! Black Emperor (Like Lemmy and the umlaut, we’d have retired random punctuation after these post-rock legends used it best.)
8. Public Enemy
9. Man… or Astro-Man? (After seeing them live, you still wonder.)
10. We Were Promised Jetpacks! (Yes, Scottish frontman Adam Thompson, we sure were.)

I like #3, #4, #5 and #8, but I'm not sure of the others. I don't even think #1 should count.

Without giving it a great deal of thought, here are my ten favourite band names.

  1. Joy Division
  2. Velvet Underground
  3. Soundgarden
  4. A Tribe Called Quest
  5. The Flaming Lips
  6. Revolting Cocks
  7. Rage Against the Machine
  8. Sex Pistols
  9. Sonic Youth
  10. The Psychedelic Furs

Five Best Covers by Guns N' Roses

MusicIn the late 80s, I absolutely loved Guns N' Roses. I literally wore out my Appetite for Destruction cassette. I had to score both Use Your Illusion 1 and Use Your Illusion 2 the day they were released. For a few years at least, GNR was the best band on the planet.

This entry isn't about GNR, although they're a candidate for my next primer. This entry is about my five favourite cover songs by Guns N' Roses.

1. "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" - Originally recorded by Bob Dylan

2. "Mama Kin" - Originally recorded by Aerosmith

3. "Hair of the Dog" - Originally recorded by Nazareth

4. "Live and Let Die" - Originally recorded by Wings

5. "Since I Don't Have You" - Originally recorded by The Skyliners

Magic Songs - Ow Ow Ow It's Magic, You Know

musicMy daughter is with me at work where I've got an extensive music library sitting on an external hard drive. Yes, I back it up periodically.

She's loving this song by Selena Gomez of The Wizards of Waverly Place fame entitled "Magic". I just played the original "Magic" by Pilot and blew her mind. She still prefers Selena's version, because "she has a better voice".
