City and Colour's Cowgirl in the Sand

musicNeil Young rules. It's as simple as that. The man is a living legend.

Borrowed Tunes II: A Tribute To Neil Young was released last month, but I haven't heard it yet. I have heard City and Colour's cover of "Cowgirl In The Sand" and I dig it. That's one of my favourite Neil Young songs, but I like what Dallas Green has done with it. It's completely stripped down, and if you just listen to the guitar, it sounds like a Hayden song.

I'm sure Neil Young purists will blow a gasket when they hear this tune. Neil Young is so unique, he's difficult to cover. With Bob Dylan you get a great song writer that other singers cover to create great songs. With Neil Young, you get a great song writer where the cover is rarely as good as the original. In fact, other than a couple from Pearl Jam, I can't think of a Neil Young cover that really does him justice.

You can hear City and Colour's version of "Cowgirl In The Sand" here or you can watch the live performance below.

Like The Archies and Banana Splitz

HomerThere was a great exchange between Marge and Bart last night on "The Simpsons". While riding a bicycle built for two, they begin singing Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Sweet Home Alabama" together. We witness them singing the following verse about our very own Neil Young.

Well, I heard Mister Young sing about her
Well, I heard ole Neil put her down.
Well, I hope Neil Young will remember
a southern man don't need him around anyhow.

At this point, Bart asks his mother, "Who's Neil Young?". Marge's answer is classic. "He's a singer from the 60s, like The Archies and Banana Splitz".

Beauty, eh?

Neil Young - Mr. Soul (Unplugged)
I forgot to share an MP3 yesterday. The past few weeks are a blur... Luckily for you, a reader reminded me I hadn't thrown down a weekly MP3 and a request was made for some Neil Young. This is from his Unplugged album and goes back to his Buffalo Springfield days.

Neil Young on 102.1 The Edge

radioHey kids, ever heard of Neil Young? Here's a little thing I wrote for the guy a few years back. Or, you can browse all 346 entries* on this entry about the living legend, if you prefer.

You never hear Neil Young on 102.1 The Edge. Sure, they played City and Colour's cover of Cowgirl in the Sand, and Bono joining Pearl Jam for Rockin' in the Free World (fun fact: Ed Vedder chose Bono over me that night!), but I've never actually heard Neil.

Wait a minute... did Neil get any airplay during his Pearl Jam years, when he released Mirror Ball? Maybe Downtown? I don't think so...

Neil Young's getting plenty of airplay on 102.1 The Edge these days. Redlight King's Old Man samples Neil's Old Man and 102.1 is currently playing it every hour on the hour. Luckily, it's good.

Neil Young on 102.1 The Edge... better late than never.

* actual number probably lower

Seeing Neil Young: Better Late Than Never

musicEntering 2012, there were three acts on my "must see live" wishlist: Public Enemy, Neil Young and Nirvana.

I caught Public Enemy at an absolutely amazing show in September, and tonight I'll see Neil Young at the ACC. I can't wait to see the living legend I've admired forever live.

"Living" is the key word there, because I'll never see Nirvana. That one isn't happening.

neil

What bands are on your must-see-live list?

Neil Young - Heart of Gold
CTV is playing their Olympic anthem ad nauseum. It's called "I Believe" and it's sung by Nikki Yanofsky and CTV likes to set montages to it every time a Canadian reaches the podium. Essentially, CTV takes these inspiring, amazing Canadian moments of triumph and tarnishes them by tying them to this awful tune.

When a Canadian wins gold at these Olympic games, I'd much rather hear Neil Young's "Heart of Gold". CTV, this one's for you.

Heaven in Audio Form

musicPete, I don't know if you're reading this, but your bro "borrowed" your copy of Neil Young's Live at Massey Hall 1971 and lent it to me. I've been spinning it all morning, and it's heaven.

Young was 25 and on his game. It sounds brilliant, and his words and tone resonate in a way that confirms what I've suspected for years. Neil Young is god.

It's heaven in audio form.

Piracy Is The New Radio

Piracy Is The New RadioI friggin' love Neil Young, so when he talks, I listen.

Neil Young had some very interesting things to say on the stage of D: Dive into Media the other day.

"Young is calling for a new digital ecosystem of high quality music files and he believes that Jobs would have gotten there had he lived long enough. On the distribution side, Young isn't particularly concerned with the effects of piracy on artists, he's more concerned that the files that are being shared are of such low quality:"

It doesn't affect me because I look at the internet as the new radio. I look at the radio as gone. [...] Piracy is the new radio. That's how music gets around. [...] That's the radio. If you really want to hear it, let's make it available, let them hear it, let them hear the 95 percent of it.

I think he's right on point. Piracy is the new radio. There's no point fighting it, you may as well embrace it.

What do you think?

Neil Young: Exclusive First Listen

musicI apologize for not posting today, but I've been listening to Sugar Mountain - Live At Canterbury House 1968.

Neil Young was just a few days shy of his 23rd birthday when he took the stage at the Canterbury House in Ann Arbor, Mich., for what would become a legendary performance. It was 1968, and Young was about to release his self-titled debut solo album. His old band, Buffalo Springfield, had split up six months earlier, and few people even knew who Young was. But to his own surprise, and to the surprise of the Canterbury House, Young drew a sold-out audience.

You can stream his album in its entirety for free at NPR Music. That's what I'm doing right now.

It's 40 years later and Neil Young and Reprise Records are finally releasing the long-awaited Canterbury House performance as part of the Archives Performance Series, Young's effort to release box-set editions of past live concerts. Live at the Fillmore East was released in 2006, with Live at Massey Hall 1971 following a year later.

Long May You Run

musicThe older I get, the more I find myself listening to Neil Young. I first really got into Neil Young in 1989 when "Rockin' in the Free World" broke on Q107. Prior to that, I was only familiar with Neil Young's classic hits like "Heart of Gold", "Ohio" and "Old Man". "Rockin' in the Free World" became an instant favourite of mine and I started delving into the Neil Young catalogue.

One of the first things I did was pick up Decade, a couple of CDs that contains thirty-five of Young's songs recorded between 1966 and 1976. That's how I experienced "Cinnamon Girl", "Down by the River", "Cowgirl in the Sand", "After the Gold Rush", "Southern Man", "Helpless", "The Needle and the Damage Done", "Tonight's the Night, Part 1", "Like A Hurricane" and "Long May You Run" for the first time. Needless to say, I liked what I heard.

In 1995 I was blessed when one of my favourite rock bands collided with Neil Young and produced Mirror Ball and Merkin Ball. Both were added to my collection instantly and are still beloved. Prior to this, Pearl Jam and Neil Young blew my mind by collaborating on "Rockin' in the Free World" at the MTV Music Awards in 1993. Pearl Jam continues to cover this tune in concert, much to my delight.

There's a reason I easily named him my favourite Torontonian, consider "Rockin' In The Free World" to be our other anthem, listed two Young songs in my Ten Canadian Tracks and consider this picture the epitomy of photographic zen.

Whenever it's time to debate who is the world's greatest living songwriter, I stand firmly in Neil Young's camp. Sure, I accept the many arguments it might be Bob Dylan, but I believe it's Neil. When was the last time you listened to the tunes on Decade, checked out Rust Never Sleeps, Freedom or Harvest Moon? Revisit these tunes and you'll see why.

The Interweb Lies

MouseNeil Young has never won a Grammy. I know this for a fact because Neil Young might just be my favourite singer / songwriter of all-time.

Neil was honoured at the pre-Grammy MusiCares gala as their Person of the Year for his artistry in music and philanthropic contributions. I did a little reading about the event in which several artist covered Neil's biggest hits. I went to Google News, typed in Neil Young and started reading.

That's how I found this article. Below is a screen cap of the page in which it clearly states that Neil Young wasn't the only big name artist to never win a Grammy. It says The Beatles also never won a Grammy.

grammy

That factoid surprised me. I instantly tweeted about it.

tweet

It didn't take long for people to call bullshit on my erroneous tweet. That article was dead wrong. The Beatles have actually won 7 Grammy awards.

The interweb lies. Consider yourself warned.

Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Piece of Crap
I remember Q107 playing this Sleeps with Angels cut and I instantly liked the punky simplicity of it. For the past several years, this song has been a bit of an inside joke with my friend Scott and I. If something wasn't working as it should, usually a piece of Microsoft software, we'd rant about it in "Piece of Crap"-like fashion and conclude that it was "a piece of crap... PIECE OF CRAP!"

Neil Young and the Bluenotes - This Note's For You

musicI'm sharing this classic video by Neil Young and the Bluenotes because it includes the line "ain't singing for Pepsi". When I record a cover about my battle against Pepsi, I'll change that to "ain't chanting for Pepsi".

This video won the MTV Video Music Award for Best Video of the Year for 1989.

Neil Young - Rockin' In The Free World (Electric)
Live 8 is this weekend, and closing the Canadian show is the great Neil Young. I'm excited. I was looking forward to his appearance at the Junos but he was sidelined with an aneuryism and unable to attend. His appearance this weekend means he's healthy and ready to rock. Awesome.
