Baseball sucked last night. My Indians, Orioles, and Diamondbacks all fricken lost. Nobody won. That's no good at all. Oh well, I'm first or at least this is the first comment, so I must be first unless someone got in ahead of me. I want my Chief Wahoo cake. I hope I get it.

Quite the week.

I think the parade fiasco has been spoken about enough. Many lessons learned from this one. Mike indeed was the lucky one going down towards the start on Lakeshore. I think there were so many disappointed people - who waited and gave up. Or who waited and then pretty much lost their front row spots once people breached the gates/barriers. If only - everything had gone as scheduled, so much of this could have been avoided. And from the sounds of it - they really should have had the video screens showing something of the parade at NPS. Gees - so started to go off there on this topic. I guess it hasn't been spoken about enough.

A shoutout to Mike who delivered me a Toronto mike'd sticker this week. Security video shows that he may have dropped it initially on the walkway to my front door - but who am I to complain getting a FREE awesome sticker and having it home delivered. Thank you again Mike!

Argos home opener tomorrow - does anyone care that much? I guess all the focus has rightfully been on the Raptors.

This Ujiri thing is quite ridiculous.

Where is Mitch Marner going? Is he staying?

A big day by the lakeshore tomorrow!

The Argonauts' home opener goes at 4 pm, where they will be honouring Ricky Ray and his hall of fame career as a QB for the Argos and Eskimos.

At 7pm, Arkells are playing across the street at the Amphitheatre - a show that sold out pretty much instantly. The boys in Arkells actually lobbied the CFL and had the Argos/Ticats game moved to 4pm so that fans could attend both events. That was a bahd move from a great group, arguably the top rock act in Canada today. Awesome.

Really bummed about the McCown saga.
I’ve been listening to him since ‘Talking of Sports’ at CKFH.
In recent years I’ve passed on many of the Monday to Thursday PT segments but would NEVER miss the Friday Round Table - live or later by podcast.
My favourite episodes were those with Brunt and Dave Perkins. Nirvana.
And God help us if Blair gets the gig - I love his writing but find his voice to be grating.
My money is on Elliotte Friedman or Brad Fay - either would be excellent.
End of an Era!

1 year in and Doug Ford's government is an unmitigated disaster. This is a massive fail in terms of government in every sense of the word

No respect for the tax payer. Adding more to the debt while cutting left right and centre.

I said it before this government will go down as the most corrupt ever. Look what just happened with his two nepotism appointments of his buddy Dean French's pals.

Everyone who voted for the cons because they were pissed at Wynne; you made this bed and I hope you enjoy sleeping in it. For those so called moderate fiscal conservatives, please explain how anything he has done so far has been fiscally responsible.

In other good news. Renata Ford is giving the ol' eff you to Ford country and etobicoke by running as a PPC candidate in the upcoming election. I'll give the racist climate change denier Bernier one thing. He knows how to stick it to the cons. I'm getting my popcorn now.

The issues with the Ford government run across party lines. I can not remember the last time any of the three major parties in Ontario has elected an effective leader who could actually run a government. Since the second term of Dalton McGuinty, Ontario voters have been subjected to a series of corrupt and incompetent administrations.

This is largely due to the lack of qualified people entering provincial politics. As a result, the 2014 and 2018 elections became what I call None of The Above elections, where you felt like holding your nose as you mark an X on your ballot.

I have heard two reasons on why more good candidates do not enter the political arena. According to former provincial cabinet minister Jim Bradley, social media has scared some people away from seeking elected office. People are afraid that comments they made on Twitter or Facebook years ago will be used against them. And former CBC satirist Rick Mercer believes that the concentration of power in the office of the Prime Minister and Premier has discouraged people from entering politics because MPs, MPPs and most cabinet ministers have so little say in government policy.

Meanwhile, the voters have no choice but to change the government every four years and hope eventually that one of the parties will elect a good leader who can run a government. With 350 billion dollars in debt and incompetent leadership, I am worried that Ontario might eventually be run by the bond rating agencies in New York before we find a competent Premier .

Happy Friday everybody, have a good weekend.

June 21, 2019 @ 3:45 PM

Many PK Subban rumors of him being traded to Toronto. He was disliked in Mtl. & now disclosed a problem in the room in Nashville. Why take on an angry cat.
So many trade options out there & Dubas may give in - Nylander, Kapanin, draft choices & BTW throw in Sparks. I'd do it.
Gonna be a $h!t show with the draft tonight.

June 21, 2019 @ 5:50 PM

Regarding the McCown firing at 590 was he really getting paid over million or more to do this show. That seems like crazy money for a radio sports show in a saturated market the 3 guys at 1050 together probably make a third of his salary.

June 22, 2019 @ 1:09 AM

Well, my Indians won. Boy, that was a wild one. Good that they won it with homers by Carlos Santana, Jordan Luplow and also Tyler Naquin. My Orioles and Diamondbacks lost again. Well, Chief Wahoo cake. It will be the first Saturday after my Indians win the World Series. Trust me. They'll win.

June 22, 2019 @ 7:33 AM

If you had any interest in seeing the recent Apollo 11 documentary in the way it should be seen, on a big IMAX screen, and didn't get the chance or want to see it again, it's being shown at Cinesphere this weekend and next, and I think this is the real full-length version and not the 45-minute one being shown at Ont Science Centre.

June 22, 2019 @ 9:28 AM

@Ben and Chuck. I am not surprised about how bad Dougs policies are, what I am surprised is how awful his optics are. For a guy who's entire career was to go on talk radio and complain, for him to be so blind of him saying we need to cut and make sacrifices, then spending money on his ego and his cronies in his first year amazed even me (who doesn't think much of Ford to begin with)

His first action is to give himself a custom van and his cop buddy a promotion, then wanting to put his own ego stamp on the province with a new logo and license plates. Now expanding the cabinet by 7 ( meaning seven more Cons with a pay bump and extra staff) while demanding every other department and city to make cuts.

Amazing Rob with all his issues was way more qualified. What is it with conservatives who seems to vote for the most unqualified person to represent them

June 22, 2019 @ 10:14 AM

Chuck 99

Doug Ford is just another in a series of clueless leaders than have been foisted on the voters of this province, along with Dalton McGuinty and his misguided green energy policies, Tim Hudak and his one million jobs promise that failed to add up, Kathleen Wynne and her crooked accounting and needless sale of Hydro One and Andrea Horwath and her billions in spending promises with no plan in place to pay for them.

I agree that either Patrick Brown or Christine Elliott would have been a better leader for the PCs, although, sadly, I hear Christine is still feeling the effects of a fall she sustained back in the winter.

What I find particularly sad is that there are former premiers who were defeated in other provincial elections who could do a better job of running the province that the inept group that currently occupies Queens Park. Christy Clark of British Columbia or Philippe Couillard of Quebec come to mind.

June 22, 2019 @ 11:52 AM

Rick C in Oakville

@Chuck99, Ben V, and Tron. Couldn't agree more, yes I voted Conservative, but had supported Christine Elliot, and Effie Triantafilopoulos in my riding, as she had intimated that Doug would be held to a short leash after a conversation I had with here.
Maybe with Dean French' s departure, some focus will be regained.
As with Gerald Butts/Michael Wernick/Dean French, it is the unelected people that seem to wield the greatest power, hope Renata kicks some Ford ass, wish I could vote for her, given the BS of the election process, would be a well sacrificed vote.

Yeah, Leafs are in a weird spot, usually teams in this spot are coming off a couple of Cups before they have to dump salary just to maintain their core. The Leafs have not even won a playoff series but are already in the salary dumping stage.

June 22, 2019 @ 3:32 PM

Rob J

Only Toronto and Florida haven't won a playoff series since the 04-05 lockout. Ouch.

June 22, 2019 @ 3:54 PM

It's been said time and time again that the PC's were going to become government regardless of who their leader was. People were sick of the Liberals and the NDP is too far to the left. I'm not a Conservative by any means, but I initially cut Doug Ford and his team some slack for the first few months. There were bound to be some growing pains. But when they keep making the same mistakes over and over again and when your unelected Chief of Staff seems to be the one making all the decisions and headlines day after day, I have a problem with that. I also have a problem with an unelected member of the Premier's office making elected MPPs and cabinet ministers cry.

The provincial budget that was passed smells and looks like a Liberal budget but with a ton of cuts. How are you still in a massive deficit and spending a ton of money while still making a ton of cuts? Where's all the money going? I work students who have faced massive cuts to their OSAP and are going to be spending the summer considering whether or not to drop out of school.

I don't see Ford's tenure being long whether it be the PC's overthrowing him as leader of their party or the public deciding not to re-elect him in 3 years. While they say a week is a lifetime in politics, if this kind of stuff keeps happening going into the next election then I can only see the PC's getting a minority government.

June 22, 2019 @ 4:43 PM

Rob J

The fairy tale that right-wing governments are better when it comes to deficits somehow prevails despite all evidence to the contrary in the last 40 years (see: Reagan, Bush 1, Bush 2, Trump, Mulroney, Harper). The 'tea party' wing of US Republicans which rose up to protest Obama's spending suddenly became mutes when DT started blasting holes in his budgets. I wonder what the big difference was that 'coloured' their change in philosophy?

The influence of a Premier's advisors can never be underestimated. I actually thought Dalton McGuinty was an effective premier in his first term when his Finance Minister, Greg Sorbara was his advisor. But after Sorbara left politics and Gerald Butts was hired to run the Premier's office, the government started making bad decisions, particularly on the Hydro file.

June 22, 2019 @ 7:17 PM

Rick C in Oakville

To add to the PC/ Republican debate, I think there must be a cookie cutter app for their platforms, cut taxes benefiting the wealthiest (and don't replace lost revenue), " open for business / MAGA", create blue collar jobs( when we have record unemployment).
I figured Trudeau would have increased the GST that Harper had cut, to get to his budgets balancing themselves.

June 23, 2019 @ 3:14 AM

Well, I never voted for Doug Ford to begin with. I voted Liberal. My candidate didn't even win my riding, it was this Bell person, NDP. I would never vote for the Ford people. Well, how about those Indians. This new pitcher, Aaron Civale pitched six shutout innings. Brad Hand got another save. Indians are a great team. Too bad the Twins never seem to lose. Oh well, one day they will. My Indians need to get to first place. My Orioles finally won as well. My Diamondbacks lost though again. Remember my World Series Party will be the first Saturday after my Indians win the World Series. It will be a blast. I'll be playing lots of Bob Seger at my party and John Mellencamp. Those guys are the best. Bob Seger should be the king, not Elvis.

June 23, 2019 @ 7:28 AM

The genius approach by right-wing governments in NA since Reagan is to woo white middle-class (often Christian) social conservatives with said or unsaid proposals regarding immigration, abortion, restricting marriage, capital punishment, ‘tough on crime’ etc and then screw them over economically when in power, as the financial goodies flow to the 1%. The 2004 book “What’s the Matter With Kansas” explains the bait-and-switch perfectly.

Great win by Zach Plesak. He's a great young pitcher. Carlos Santana homers again. Anyway, my Diamondbacks won as well. My Orioles lost another one. Hot weather on the way. It's going to be tough to work out in, but I'll take it over snow any day. I wish George Smitherman could be our premier. He would be better than Doug Ford any day.

How about those Indians. They won in extra innings. How about Jason Kipnis with the walk off homer. Great win. My Diamondbacks won as well. Wonderful. My Orioles didn't play. Looking Forward to Thursday!
@Rob J - True. Somehow they have managed to talk people into voting against there own economic interests by promising them their social conservative views would drive the governments agenda . I'll look into the book , but It will probably be preaching to the choir

Now of course the U.S. under Trump they have taken the formula to new lengths and are not only bankrupting the treasury but are openly robbing the system. Report Today says that the Private companies hired to look after migrant children separated from parents at the border charges $775 (USD) a day. For which the kids don't get basic hygiene like soap and tooth paste , are not given adequate food and reportedly have no beds or blankets.
The Companies running the concentration camps are all ones run by republican donors.
Bet you didn't see that one coming.

@ Mike once more i apologise for getting so political, In my defense i have been retweeting the @AuschwitzMuseum daily tweets as they remind us of what was happening daily at Auschwitz. I'm getting scared we are heading in that direction again.

HHOF voting today. If I had a say, I’d induct: Mogilny, Zubov, Alfredsson, and Turgeon, with Hayley Wickenheiser as my female choice.

The voting process continues to be less than optimal IMO with a super-secret ballot, where we don’t even know who was nominated, not to mention the final numbers. Contrast that with MLB which makes the whole process fan-friendly and totally transparent.

It’ll be interesting to hear the final results later today.

A couple of things.
Sad to miss TMLX3, but the following is related to @ James Edgars comments about Auschwitz Museum.
I visited Auschwitz, Birkenau late last week with my dad (he is 93, WW2 vet), and 2 sisters. We were in Warsaw, Krakow and Wraclaw (Poland) , previous to this .
Spent yesterday and today touring East and West Berlin, and checked out what is left of the Berlin wall. Very humbling, and life changing experience.
A lot of what happened here 75+ years ago could ( and will) happen again very easily, the similarities are very unnerving.

June 25, 2019 @ 2:33 PM

Hockey Hall of Fame new inductees for 2019? Laughable. Haley was a lock & deservedly so.
Nedomansky? U R kidding even though 1st defector from a Communist country to play in North America. His time in NHL was limited at an older age as spent earlier years in WHA with the Toronto Toros. If he is elected why isn't Paul Henderson in HHOF even as a Builder for Cdn. hockey with the platinum goal in game 7 vs. Russia & not only that he had game winning goals each of the previous 2 games.
Roenick after being passed for many years MUST be elected as 1 of the top USA leading scorers in NHL.

June 25, 2019 @ 3:57 PM

Rob J

Very good results today for the 1999 Stars’ championship team with the induction of Zubov and Carbonneau. That makes 6 HOFers plus GM Bob Gainey and the inevitable inclusion of Ken Hitchcock. They’ve only won once but the legacy of that season continues.

To me, Mogilny and Alfredsson are the 2 glaring omissions. Again, not knowing the actual names discussed or the vote percentages is quite frustrating.

I wrote him recently and he said he was going through a rough patch. I hope he makes it out to TMLX3 tomorrow. He was at the first two.

Sending positive thoughts and vibes to Basement Dweller. Come back soon.

@Urooj Islam

Your comments are disgraceful & disreputable to all of us.
You crossed the line & if I was Mike I would block all your future comments.
Never Ever mention again your last comment on your last input.
NO RESPECT FOR YOU Urooj anymore.

I'm pretty easy going, but when a commenter sends me an awful email to tell me what a piece of shit I am, I choose to stop hosting their comments. Goodbye, Urooj.

June 26, 2019 @ 11:08 PM

Okay. Now I know who the Jason Kipnis is who posted as Jason Kipnis. Honestly getting to places is hard for me if I haven't been there before. I wouldn't want to go to an event like this anyway unless someone paid me. Well, I'm not going to TMLX3. It's Bob Seger, not Bob Seagar. I should know. I've been a fan of his for many years. Well, my Indians won again. That's great with homers by Jake Bowers and Tyler Naquin. That's awesome. My Diamondbacks won as well, but my Orioles lost.

June 27, 2019 @ 7:08 AM

Yikes.... Damn it Urooj. A few days ago I say on here how you crack me up and you are my favorite poster and you go and post that.

Elvis, you're back to being my favorite.

June 27, 2019 @ 7:58 AM

Oh, and happy 50th birthday Toronto Mike !!

Getting there is the goal!

June 27, 2019 @ 9:13 AM

Wow, I missed a LOT. I sometimes comment on the Cheryl aimed comments, but there are ones she gets are jokes - like the cakes, and others which cause her anxiety - some y'all ought to know the difference between a joke, and something serious if we're all adults here.

Jack - kindly exit stage left. just what do you get by posting something along those lines? get a life.

bsmtdwllr73 we do miss you indeed.

Rob J - thank you for sharing with us.

June 27, 2019 @ 11:44 AM

I will do my best to represent for the West Indian disapora tonight - please forgive me for pronouncing Toronto with both letter t's intact.

It is so tiring seeing comments aimed at Cheryl. Some of those same people would get their back up if other commenters took a strip off them the same way they seem to think it's OK to do so to Cheryl. And it's such a lame attempt at humour too; not to mention several of the comments are straight-up bullying which is not cool. Grow up.

I'll pronounce Toronto with both T's intact in honour of you.

Let's work on getting "brewery" nailed down first big guy. Baby steps...

June 27, 2019 @ 1:17 PM

Lyle Lanley

Happy birthday Mike. We appreciate all you do here.

June 27, 2019 @ 1:27 PM

I'm hoping someone records tonight's get together so Elvis has the ability to not listen to it later.

June 27, 2019 @ 1:29 PM

A couple of things to get off of my somewhat lumpy chest:

#1. Happy birthday to Toronto Mike. I hope that tonight's event is a big success. Not able to
personally attend myself due to more pressing personal matters in Scarborough. On the bright
side, consider the absence of my non-drinking, largely scowling self my heartfelt gift to you all!!

#2. Thanks as always to those folks who have noted my latest self-imposed absence but sadly said
hiatus will probably continue indefinitely. There was an earlier comment posted today (since deleted) regarding another enthusiastic commenter's posting regiment and it was extremely
insensitive and uncalled for. Big difference between teasing about some undelivered championship
cakes as well as mocking a couple of past-their-prime classic rotters(!) and mocking someone's
bravely admitted mood disorder issues. Crap like that is why many males, especially those of the
middle-aged persuasion find it increasingly difficult to be honest and transparent in that regard.
While I might not suffer from clinical depression per se. my ASD diagnosis overlaps and shares
many parallels and it does indeed make day-to-day life extremely trying. Especially when one
lacks friends and nearby family to offer various kind of support. It is easy to mock, tease and take
the piss and be oh-so-brave from behind a clever alias. Yeah, I post behind the safe walls of library
anonymity, but otherwise I have been completely honest and outright in all of my comments and
opinions. For those who get their jollies and perhaps their sexual satisfaction from using this forum
to launch outright personal attacks, well, kindly please remember, perhaps you'll get your more than just desserts one day as well. And then we'll see (or not) what kind of stuff you're actually
made of.

Happy birthday Mike!

@Basement Dweller: Not sure if/when you'll see this. Sorry you're having a rough go. Hang in there buddy. We miss ya!

Jason from Sudbury

A couple things...

Looks like I missed all the action earlier with Urooj. I don't know what happened or what he said but that's really shitty. He was a long time contributor to this blog.

As for Cheryl: Again anything I did was meant in good fun and again I'm really sorry if I hurt, offended or upset anyone. To be fair though I've only done it a handful of times over the years, and I don't think I was harsh or went overboard with anything I said and did. But the last thing I wanna do is cause problems for anyone.

June 27, 2019 @ 2:09 PM

@Jason from Sudbury
No worries, but you weren't the commenter I was referring to in my previous comment.
I happen to somewhat agree with you "Turn The Page" opinion!!

I've said it on the podcast many times. Metallica's version of Turn the Page is better than the original.

June 27, 2019 @ 2:16 PM

bsmntdwllr73 !!!

Glad to see you post. I was hoping to meet you tonight. We'll catch up on a future TMLX for sure.

June 27, 2019 @ 2:25 PM

I know I'm guilty of busting chops around here. Please know that none of it is done with malicious intent. I tease Cheryl (and others) in what I hope is playful banter. If I knew it genuinely bothered or hurts someone's feelings I would stop instantly. I enjoy the community here with all the quirks.

June 27, 2019 @ 2:31 PM

That will kinda depend on my inevitable future public guardian allowing me out on a hard-to-earn night pass!!!!

June 27, 2019 @ 2:31 PM

@bsmntdwllr73 I solved that riddle by bringing my warden (Mrs. Beatts) with me tonight. She's letting me out in public with good behavior. Once I get there all bets are off.

June 27, 2019 @ 2:45 PM

Yes, but you probably only break out the straitjackets and handcuffs as an exception and not
the rule. Pretty sure that those somewhat controversial items are the De Rigueur at my next long-term destination!!

June 27, 2019 @ 2:57 PM

The last few Open Mikes have been full of disgraceful, degrading comments to others overall.
Mike is the operator of this site & has done a GREAT job allowing us to comment & him to allow discussions even with his own personal entries. I've been a follower for over 10 years & a few times I have sent a comment I shouldn't have - do the 24hr rule, wait a day & if still acknowledge it send.

Cheryl is an in tragal part of this blog & she gets much attention. Her comments are from her heart & even though a lot of us don't agree she has been part of this "family" for a long time.
Unfortunately I won't be at TMLX3 tonight & wish everyone a good time & make sure everyone sings HBDay to Mike.
Glad to see you back bsmntdwllr73.
Happy Birthday Mike

Happy birthday, TM!

Some interesting trivia: (link)
"Bob Seger fronted his band The Last Heard from 1966 - 1967. By 1968 the joke was that 'the last heard' sounded like 'the last turd' so they changed their name."

June 27, 2019 @ 5:50 PM

bsmntdwllr73 - you're missed on here and at the event tonight!!!
