I should still be in bed!

Raptors talk here. For everything else, you're in the right place.

June 14, 2019 @ 7:52 AM

Well, I'm not first again. I really don't care though. Well, I have no hole to hide in. If I was in a hole, then Mike would shut this down. Warriors didn't win. I know that. Anyway, they didn't win. Well, my Diamondbacks won. That's great, but my Orioles lost which was not great. At least my Diamondbacks won.

June 14, 2019 @ 7:54 AM

What a night! Quite exhausted but all worth it! The ending dragged out - a bit anti-climatic.

Glad there wasn't too much damage in the city.

June 14, 2019 @ 7:57 AM

I'm with you on that ending... with the clock ticking down we're ready to burst and then GS gets the technical for calling a timeout they didn't have which stopped the damn clock and dragged out that final .9 seconds.... but damn, did it feel good when Curry missed that shot!

June 14, 2019 @ 8:00 AM

Great news folks. I've been in contact with Cheryl's (and now my) baker. They are making the most glorious Raptors cake for TMLX3 for us all to indulge in.

The baker is so happy to actually be able to fill the order.

June 14, 2019 @ 8:49 AM

Can we cut the cake at TMLX3?

June 14, 2019 @ 9:04 AM

Rick aka The_ElevatorMan

June 14, 2019 @ 9:08 AM

@Mike I was serious when I texted you last night. I will pay pal you money for a raptors cake for TMLX3 :)

What a fitting tribute at your event !

June 14, 2019 @ 9:41 AM

@Beatts.. it needs to be a raptors/birthday cake!! Don't forget it's Mike's bday as well! ;)

June 14, 2019 @ 9:51 AM

Cake! TGIF! Best Friday on my entire year.

June 14, 2019 @ 10:44 AM

@LieveFamke That's right!

Ironically both the Raptor's and Toronto Mike are old as dinosaurs...

June 14, 2019 @ 11:06 AM

@ Beatts

That's not irony. #grammarpolice

Yeah, I just did that.

June 14, 2019 @ 11:28 AM

James Edgar

Happy Friday all.

That was quite the night. And i was in bed just after the trophy was handed out.

Sort of glad i live in the burbs so i missed the craziness downtown but kind of wish i lived downtown so i could take part, lol.

Now hopefully we can focus on the one true sport MOTOGP. Catalan GP this weekend!

June 14, 2019 @ 11:49 AM

Well played @McNulty !

June 14, 2019 @ 1:18 PM

Urooj Islam

Too bad Cheryl doesn't have a personal ditch digger or she would have had a hole to hide in today.

Your tweet about finding someone named Mike Toronto reminded me of a hilarious scene from Naked Gun 2 about boxer names. Here it is:

June 14, 2019 @ 1:40 PM

Mike called it first. Today was Biggs and Barr last day on 97.7

Any word on who the new morning show will be?

June 14, 2019 @ 2:35 PM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

In the short term, it's Adam Ricard.. former Toronto Mike'd guest! Bob Williette, also a former Toronto Mike'd guest, will take his spot.

Long term, they're on the hunt for a new show. They haven't decided yet. It could be anyone from Dean to Adam!

June 14, 2019 @ 3:03 PM

@James Edgar - "MotoGP"? No, I'll be watching some pirated stream of the 24 Hours of Le Mans starting on Saturday morning. Not that there's much chance of anyone other than Toyota winning overall, but there are 3 other classes.
And I might check to see the national women's soccer team result at the World Cup.

That's what's great about the Internet age. We all can watch as much of whatever sport we choose and ignore everything else, even while MLSE and their media owners tell all of the other sheep what they should be getting excited about.

June 14, 2019 @ 3:37 PM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

If you buy a Raptors cake, you can bring it to TMLX3 and we'll make some noise about it.

June 14, 2019 @ 4:58 PM

Well, how about those Indians. How about Jake Bowers? He hit for the cycle. Great game for my Indians, but my Orioles and Diamondbacks lost. How did you get in contact with my personal baker? You couldn't have done that because I am not allowed to give out his contact information. Well, if I hid in a hole, then I wouldn't be able to post and Mike would shut this down. I can't hide in a hole.

June 15, 2019 @ 7:37 AM

Well, how about those Oranje women! Great game for my Oranjes! I will ask Cheryl's baker to make me an orange cake when they win the World Cup!
BUT.. I need to cheer for Canada as well... what am I going to do on Thursday!???!
It's either be an orange cake or a maple leaf red cake..

June 15, 2019 @ 10:56 AM

Blind Dave

Good to see Toronto have a "major" champion, though I wish the Argos, TFC, and the Rock weren't discounted as professional. The players put their heart and soul into winning, and those who aren't "major" often play for very little money compared to the big guys. That says something to me.

I am not a basketball fan, and if it weren't for media and social media I'd never have known. But with that said, our Jays and Leafs need to take a good, hard look at how to build a champion. The Shanaplan is coming along, but the Jays are taking an even longer road and it won't crack anytime soon.

June 15, 2019 @ 12:50 PM

The Yankees were my Fave team before the Jays were born. Reggie Jackson was my favorite player along with Munson, Chambliss & Guidry.
Today the Yankees traded for Edwin (the parrot) a former Blue Jay & leading MLB in HRs with 22as of today.
My Fave team once again. Can't wait for the cake with NY on it.
Nobody talking about Women's World Cup of Soccer & Canada winning both games so far. Thursday will be a challenge with Cda. & Netherlands playing for top spot in their division.

June 15, 2019 @ 10:21 PM

How about Shane Beber. He pitched really well. My Indians won. That's great. My Indians are great. My Diamondbacks also won. Great I got two wins, but my Orioles lost again. I don't know why they're always losing, but they are. Well, let's hope they all win today.

June 16, 2019 @ 7:08 AM

Urooj Islam

A Jays fan being a Yankees fan might be the craziest thing I've ever read in an Open Mike...and I've read hundreds of Cheryl posts.

June 16, 2019 @ 4:31 PM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

@Urooj Islam

I think it's okay if that was your team before Toronto got a franchise.

June 16, 2019 @ 5:58 PM

Well, how about those Indians. Trevor Bauer pitched a complete game and got a shutout on top of that. Yes, my Indians will be great. World Series. Chief Wahoo cake. My Orioles and Diamondbacks lost again though. Oh well, they have to win again some time. What's wrong with my Orioles. They're in fricken last place.

Recording now with Hebsy and then hopping on the bike to join in the fun.

June 17, 2019 @ 8:20 AM

Rob J

Can't imagine switching professional team allegiances regardless of the scenario. There was a brief existential crisis when 'my' NHL team moved to a new locale, (as did 'my' MLB team before i was born), but the bonds were strong enough to continue the relationship.

June 17, 2019 @ 7:12 PM

Urooj Islam

Get Brian Gerstein on with you and Hebsy to talk about your Raptors championship parade experiences.

I just saw Brian's tweet, seems like he hated the clusterfuck it was. That's unfortunate because he is one of the three people (other than Nav Bhatia and Raptorize John) I always thought about being prominent local Raptors fans during times when no one gave a shit about the team.

June 17, 2019 @ 8:09 PM

Urooj Islam

@Toronto Mike

Wow, that was quick.

June 17, 2019 @ 9:47 PM

Baseball sucked last night. My Indians lost and boy did they ever lose. My Orioles also lost. My Diamondbacks didn't play. It was an awful night. They better all win tonight. I hope I can have my World Series party. Bring out the Chief Wahoo cake. That would be great.

June 18, 2019 @ 6:54 AM

Not that I saw any of it, as I mentioned above, but apparently Saturday was a good day for national soccer teams, with both the women (World Cup) and men's (Concacaf Gold Cup) teams winning. Take that, hated rivals of, uh, New Zealand and Martinique? I assumed that second one was probably a Caribbean island (because of the song Bugs Bunny sang in '8 Ball Bunny', the one with the penguin and Humphrey Bogart), but I had to check Wikipedia to make sure.
@Toronto Mike - I tried another Toronto Public Library and again had their computer not showing this site because it says it "uses an insecure encryption protocol". I don't know what that means, but since it might be a problem across their system, maybe you might want to email someone at TPL to ask what it's about?

June 18, 2019 @ 1:11 PM

Urooj Islam

Hey Cheryl, did you know that the Toronto Raptors are NBA champions?

Pretty amazing, huh?

June 18, 2019 @ 1:32 PM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

are you sure you're visiting and not (although I'm redirecting the latter to the former so it technically shouldn't matter)?

June 18, 2019 @ 8:25 PM

I'm just typing "", but from the photo I took of the screen that I posted here last week, as you said, it displays the URL as having the "https://www." in front of it anyway.
I don't know if I might be doing something wrong -- maybe something to do with using their Internet Explorer? But the library computers didn't seem to have any trouble with any other website, and your website seems to be displayed without a problem everywhere else I've tried except for the TPL terminals.

June 18, 2019 @ 9:11 PM

Basketball is finished until next season. I don't want to talk about the championship for this season. Next season it will be better. Well, how about those Indians. They won. My Jose is hopefully starting to hit better. He hit a three-run homer. That's so awesome. Also Jake Bowers, Roberto Perez and Tyler Naquin also homered and Zach Plesak pitched a gem. Chief Wahoo cake here we come. My Orioles and Diamondbacks lost though. That is no good.

June 19, 2019 @ 7:31 AM

I'm happy for you Cheryl that you get to live in a championship city finally.

June 19, 2019 @ 11:06 AM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

That's messed up because I have a valid certificate for my secure site. I have no idea why the TPL terminals are balking.

June 19, 2019 @ 12:39 PM

James Edgar

I'm acquainted with someone in TPL IT.

So yes I can guess what the issue is.

Well not specifically but generally it's an ID10 Error in their IT

June 19, 2019 @ 1:21 PM

James Edgar

@H.o.E. Sorry missed your response. Lemans is brilliant i love sports car racing especially at the lower classes were there's typically more fighting .

If you like that you really should watch some MOTOGP or World Superbike great racing in both.

June 19, 2019 @ 1:26 PM

Urooj Islam

Where did this Bob McCown story come from?

His ridiculously long PTS run is going to end like this out of the blue?

Are you going to do a blog entry on this, Mike? Perhaps you can fill in what you have been able to find out to add to SeattleSportsMedia's report?

I'm stunned that McCown is going to go out like this on a couple of days notice.

June 19, 2019 @ 7:30 PM

Urooj Islam - I was also coming in to ask the same questions as it seems really out of nowhere that he's supposed to be stepping down in the next day or so. It feels akin to what Rogers did with Martineau where he was on one day and then completely gone.

Anyone else think this is another case of "constructive dismissal" with Rogers?

Also leads to question about where this leaves the various "friends of Bob": the Shannons, The Kirks, Vendetta's, etc etc. Are they gone from PTS since (according to Jonah aka yyzsportsmedia's latest tweet) that Blair will be taking over?

June 19, 2019 @ 7:40 PM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

My guess is this is exactly the Martineau or Frankish move. A sudden end to a respected vet's run. Jonah says Blair takes over in the interim.

I honestly don't know any more than you guys... tough to write about something when all you know is what Jonah tweeted.

June 19, 2019 @ 7:44 PM

Rob J

Haven't listened to PTS (or any radio) since around Nov, 2016, because...well why? However before Bob started giving 65% effort (a generous grade), it was *the* must-listen show and all of his bravado and arrogance was completely warranted. I feel it peaked during the 2010 Olympics as he was momentarily revitalized. When Damien Cox and Stephen Brunt were rotating guest-hosts, sports fans got a tremendous listening experience, and i always came away smarter.

I met Bob at his winery in 2013 and spent a delightful afternoon hearing his stories and plans while sipping (gulping?) Stoney Ridge's vintages. Like I'm sure others are saying: when he was interested in and engaged with the topic/guest, he was the king of the medium. But too many shows were flat due to his disinterest and the same predictable/boring cast of characters, especially once we were subjected to 3 tedious hours of mediocre Sportsnet employees talking to each other.

Seeing this institution end not with a bang or even a whimper is making me melancholy, but hardly shocked.

June 19, 2019 @ 8:44 PM

If Bobcat ia gone is Derringer on Q107 next?

June 19, 2019 @ 11:04 PM

My Indians did it again. They're awesome. Jason Kipnis hit two homers. Also Roberto Perez homered. This is so awesome. My Jose had a couple hits as well. I love my Jose so much and good that he is hitting better now. My Orioles and Diamondbacks lost again though. That's no good at all, but they lost again.

June 20, 2019 @ 6:54 AM

Why are there three different ten dollar bills, but only one of the other bills?

Has anyone confirmed this Bob McCown rumour? Are they sure he's leaving for good, or is it maybe just that, as usual in the summer, he'll only be working for 2 or 3 of the next 12 weeks?
@James Edgar - Before the Internet and specialty cable TV channels came along, motorsports on TV were so rare (condensed versions of week-old races shown on 'Wide World Of Sports' a few times a year) that I would watch all of it. But now there's so much of it that often there's two or three sports car racing events available simultaneously and at least one almost every weekend of the year except the ones immediately before and after Christmas.
@Toronto Mike - Though it looks like my comment yesterday from one of them got filtered out, the TPL terminals show your site when using Firefox, just not on Internet Explorer. And it also worked through their wifi on my mobile device using Safari.

June 20, 2019 @ 11:42 AM

H.o.E. - Word is going around, with Toronto Sports Media having a story up today, that it is indeed confirmed and that Bob McCown is leaving and today is his last show

It's like Mike said: he's getting the Martineau treatment.

June 20, 2019 @ 1:33 PM

I watched hilites of NHL awards from last night & not surprised with any of the winners.
I'm NOT a HABS fan but Carey Price's moment with the young boy who lost his mother to cancer a few months ago was very emotional & inspirational at the same time. Carey gained a lot of my respect last night & well done.
