Nothing yet for the Bandshell, but there is a list for the CNE midway stage.

That basketball game yesterday sucked big time. It was god damn awful. The Warriors didn't win. They better win the next game. I'm telling you the Warriors need to win. Go Warriors. Also my Indians and Diamondbacks lost. That's no good at all. It's really awful. Nobody I mean nobody should cover Bob Seger's songs. Nobody can do them right. The only person singing Bob Seger's songs is Bob Seger. Well, this guy Franky Ballard covered You'll Accompany Me and he screws it up. Kenny Rogers and Sheena Easton covered We Got Tonight. They screwed the whole thing up. Bob Seger is a beautiful singer and nobody should cover his songs.

I respectfully disagree. That was a glorious game of basketball. Never in doubt!

And it's okay if Metallica covers Seger, right?

Hey, that reminds me of something I'd forgotten -- there's a Thin Lizzy tribute act tonight at the Rockpile. Maybe they'll play the Bob Seger song 'Rosalie' -- just to annoy Cheryl, I'm sure.

I'll be at the Lowest of the Low show tonight at the Danforth Music Hall, if anyone else is going.

After tonight, I'll next see them perform in my basement and then at Great Lakes Brewery on June 27 for TMLX3. You're all invited!

Working in Alberta for 2 weeks, and here in Calgary the smoke from the northern forest fires is blanketing the city like a hazy fog. It has been very dry here, so no relief in sight.
Unbelievable Raptors game last night, the sea of enthusiasm inside and out of the ACC/Scotia centre is wonderful to see.

@Rick C in Oakville

I'm reminded of continued debates I'd have with Freddy P about the Raptors... he'd argue the Raps were less popular in Toronto than the Argos. This went on for years until he changed his argument to "TFC is less popular in Toronto than the Argos".

Go Raps! For all of us who watched that first game in '95, this feels so damn good.

May 31, 2019 @ 8:49 AM

Rick

Exhausted today. Had a work gala to go to last night. I think they fast-tracked everything, knowing people wanted to watch the basketball game instead. Ben Mulroney was the MC. I got out of there pretty quickly afterwards and got home just in time for the second half. What a half it was. Fantastic result. Now back at work for 8am and this afternoon, we are playing softball. I haven't played softball in about 12 years. Will need to do lots of stretching ahead of the game. And I'll probably be a ripped bag of broken toys tomorrow.

Miserable MLB attendance figures - some people say its about winning - I remember going to Shea Stadium to watch the Mets during the time when Casey Stengel asked " can anybody here play this game?" Stand were full of kids having fun - is it the cost?

I'm no Cheryl and I don't want the Raptors to lose, but unlike T.O.Mike I can't be a bandwagon jumper. If anything, others doing it makes me even more inclined to ignore it. Yesterday I was about to leave to watch the free movie being shown on the screens outside Mississauga City Hall when I checked if it was still happening, only to see they had already started it 90 minutes earlier than originally scheduled to make way for showing the game instead, so I stayed home.

May 31, 2019 @ 10:10 AM

Lou,
Cost could be a factor, but 2 other significant ones are: the fact that even with 4 months to go, only a dozen or so teams out of 30 have a realistic chance to contend, and with unprecedented revenues from non-gate-related sources, franchises earn huge profits without worrying about game attendance.

When a team is this lousy, it's probably the cost...

Also, the Raps are distracting 95% of Toronto sports fans right now.

@Toronto Mike - Maybe the more realistic debate with Fred should now change to be the Wolfpack or Rock being more popular than Argos? It would be interesting for someone to take an actual headcount from photos instead of the purely fictional attendance numbers sports teams announce.

The quality of play is also a factor in the decline in Major League Baseball attendance. Analytics have eliminated the stolen base from the game and the hitters have become too one-dimensional. Too many either strike out or hit a home run and this has led to the dreaded defensive shift because so many hitters seem incapable of hitting the ball to the opposite field.

Baseball used to be very affordable. I remember attending games in Pittsburgh, Baltimore and Cleveland in the early to mid nineties and you could sit in the upper deck behind home plate for 12 bucks. The same seat would cost at least 40 dollars today. Admission prices have definitely increased by a greater amount than the overall cost of living.

May 31, 2019 @ 11:35 AM

Brian Gerstein (Raptors Devotee)

Nurse completely outcoached unprepared Kerr who thought all he needed to do was limit Kawhi, which he did, and the W would follow with the Splash Brothers. Shocking to hear that Kerr did not watch any Raptors playoff games tape, and said he only played them twice and knew little about them and that their personnel had changed since then, key players did not play in the games, blah blah blah.

Bottom line the Raptors are the better prepared, more motivated team, and it showed. Not a chance in hell that Durant plays Game 2, and maybe won't be able to even play at all, so they are clearly a vulnerable team lacking enough scoring, which is shocking to say about Golden State, but it is factual.

Iggy is hurt and he is limited while Cousins, who can be a major scorer, is incapable of doing so coming off of his injury. I am pretty bullish, but things can change game to game. I take salvation knowing that we are capable of winning all 4 games on our homecourt.

May 31, 2019 @ 11:37 AM

Dr. Seymour Light

@Chuck 99 - On MLB - Interesting stat heard the other day. At the end of May, 56 games played in the season and Bryce Harper leads MLB with 76 strike outs so far…
After 16 MLB seasons, Vladimir Guerrero (the Dad) who had a wide strike zone and swatted 449 career HRs, had a career average of 74 strike outs per SEASON!...Insane…

May 31, 2019 @ 12:56 PM

H.o.E.

@Toronto Mike - From your posts about ratings in radio, you know as much as anyone about how they're not made available to the general public. And if sports teams eagerly lie about something like the number of people in the stands that we can all plainly see,
[sarcasm] then I guess they wouldn't dare attempt to deceive us with p.r. announcements of meaningless cherry-picked and manipulated TV ratings bafflegab that no one can check on, would they? Surely they would tell us stuff that made them look bad, right? [/sarcasm]

@TM, Calgary is playing Saskatchewan at McMahon stadium tonight across from my hotel. Place is close to packed of red and green jerseys. I think Toronto has too many choices when it comes to sports entertainment, and a possible reason for the poor Argos numbers.

May 31, 2019 @ 9:47 PM

Rob J

Another reason for lower attendance (yes I’m still thinking about this) is that fewer fans are buying season tickets despite the discount and perks, because they know that they can buy single-game seats on the secondary market (ie cheaper). So instead of buying a pack of all 81 home games, they might be more selective, thus attending fewer games. The Dodgers have the most tickets to sell in all of MLB (56 000 per game) and many season ticket holders are pissed that their fellow fans are getting great seats cheaper on a game-by-game basis.

May 31, 2019 @ 10:29 PM

Well, Warriors will win the next game. I know they will do that. Warriors in five or six. Bruins will win tonight. My Indians and Diamondbacks both lost. That's no good at all, but they lost. My Orioles won though. Metallica shouldn't cover Bob Seger either. Bob Seger shouldn't let anyone cover his songs because people screw it up. Nobody should ever cover Bob Seger's songs. He's a very beautiful singer.

Anyone who doesn't think this is the biggest and most important sports moment in Toronto since 1993, is clearly making a joke. Even as the biggest TFC fan and remembering 2017 when we won the championship at home, even I know this is huge. The Raptors are the most popular franchise right now and no one else is close (nor should they be). Stop the madness.

NCAA football fans in the Deep South are among the most racist in North America, but they hide their sentiments for 3 hours every Saturday, cheering for their various African-American heroes on the gridiron before going back to their Confederate flag worship and lynching-fantasies. Shameful that racist Canadians can't at least do that re: Raptors.

I will wait to see how the NBA Finals do on TSN and how the series progresses before reaching a conclusion but it is surprising to me how many Canadians choose to opt out of the Raptors.

The Jays' postseason numbers from 2015 and 2016 were consistently better than Game 1 of the NBA Finals and that just seems weird to me. I thought the Raptors being the first Canadian team ever playing for a major sports championship while being the only Canadian team in their respective league would do more to unite Canadian fans and viewers.

It would be nice if they win as well. Nobody should cover Bob Seger's songs. That's a no no for sure. Nobody sings Turn the Page like Bob Seger does. Bob Seger will live forever. June 2, 2019 @ 8:34 AM

It is somewhat hard to believe that just 3 seasons ago, the Orioles, Blue Jays, Rangers, Mets, Giants, and Nationals were 6 of the 10 playoff teams.

June 2, 2019 @ 11:53 AM

Urooj Islam

@Annonomass

Now imagine this team without their most consistent hitter (Smoak), most consistent two starters (Stroman and Sanchez) and best relief pitcher (Giles) who are all trade assets and will likely be moved within the next two months.

It's going to get even worse than this before it starts to get better. I tried to tell people about how bad this team would be but some in the comments were weirdly optimistic.

And they haven't played the Yankees even once yet.

June 2, 2019 @ 5:04 PM

Rob J

Considering what they got for Pearce, Encarnacion, Donaldson, Estrada, Tulowitzki, Bautista, Martin, Happ, Pillar, etc (ie. the proverbial bucket of balls or nothing in the case of the free agents), 7 of whom are still productive with their new teams including the reigning World Series MVP, don't put too much hope in trades, especially for Giles and Smoak, who are only signed for this year.

Their youth-movement/rebuild seemed so unnecessary. Just imagining if 'my' team made back-to-back final four appearances, then randomly said, "Well the fun's over. Let's tear it up." Smart front offices work the hot-shot rookies in with a mix of stable and effective veterans to keep the success going for longer than 2 years, especially since there's no salary-cap (e.g. Yankees, Astros, Dodgers, Cubs, Indians, Red Sox).

The danger is if the highly touted youngsters aren't all they're cracked up to be (e.g. Teoscar Hernandez, Jansen, Maile, and Tellez, all of whom have a negative WAR) you have no team. And yes they're still young, but MLB is littered with guys in their early 20s who are already superstars.

I'm not being negative here, i'm just saying that this rebuild was not inevitable and that the fans deserve better than this, though if they're buying it, who am I to argue.

June 2, 2019 @ 6:55 PM

Urooj Islam

@Rob J

That's not true, Giles is under team control through 2020 and there's always a big seller's market for relievers at the deadline.

The scary thing is, the Blue Jays were actually trying to win in 2017 and 2018 even though it didn't look like it because the teams were bad and poorly put together. This rebuild didn't officially begin until the trade deadline in 2018.

June 2, 2019 @ 7:09 PM

I have to check the Keegan Matheson episode to hear my prediction for Jays wins in 2019. I think it was low 60s, but I have to confirm.

June 2, 2019 @ 7:18 PM

Rob J

My error on Giles’ contract, but please don’t put a lot of hope on a big return! Because of the shift in philosophy (ie. analytics), teams are less willing to ante up for a guy to do a job that many more cheaply priced players can do, just ask Craig Kimbrel, who remains unsigned despite Hall of Fame stats.
Anyways, always good talking baseball with you, Urooj Islam!

Plus, I hope The Royal Pains and Lowest of the Low start and end their sets with a Bob Seger cover.

June 2, 2019 @ 9:28 PM

Urooj Islam

@Rob J

Pitching (both starting and relief) is always in high demand at the deadline so I think they'll do really well on the returns for Stroman and Giles and will take whatever they can get for Sanchez.

All three are under control past this season so they are not going to be rentals for the teams acquiring them.

June 2, 2019 @ 9:42 PM

Rob J

Never implied that they'd do poorly in a return for Sanchez and Stroman. However, as I detailed, the track record of this team in gaining assets from productive departing players is woeful if not fireable, and I tend to look to prior results to predict future transactions. If this were a better run franchise, I'd be way more optimistic.

June 2, 2019 @ 10:28 PM

Urooj Islam

@Rob J

That's a great point, they have been awful at selling at the right time and always seem to wait for assets to diminish in value before selling. Hopefully this more clearly outlined rebuild will lead to the end of those days.

In years like 2017 and 2018, I think they were trying to have their cake and eat it too where they were holding onto assets too long because they hoped to be a competitive team but then those assets would diminish in value as the team struggled. No more, time to go full Astros and Cubs rebuild, although it will get really ugly and I'm not sure Toronto is ready for it.

June 2, 2019 @ 11:01 PM

Rob J

The Astros are the gold-standard of the classic and successful rags-to-riches rebuild, culminating in their WS victory in 2017. Totally agree about Toronto's mixed-message in 2017-18. They were hanging their hat on that 'second wild-card' and though the Twins and A's proved in those seasons that a random team could achieve it, the Jays didn't have the right mix.

It absolutely will be intriguing to see how the fans respond. Gate attendance is abysmal, though I get the sense people are still watching them on the TeeVee. The pressure is on for Shapiro et al to get this right and not waste prime seasons of Guerrero, Jr. I guess we'll see!

Neil Clarke Warren - in your context, his comments seem harmless. But there are 6 players with the last name of Lee, - they're all different women who deserve to be recognized for their talent, by someone you say is a respected golf teacher. And he was also dismissive of the fact that it was even the 74th LPGA going on - a fact you also didn't mention. All that stuff I found with a quick Google search. I don't care that he got suspended, he'll be good.

Neil Clarke Warren - also, what kind of respected golf teacher says they couldn't name 6 players of the event that they cover? That isn't even funny or smart. Mark Shapiro and Ross Atkins can not be blamed entirely for the lack of return in trades involving veterans of the 2015 and 2016 Blue Jays. They inherited two bad contracts, which made Russell Martin and Troy Tulowitzky untradeable. Trading Edwin Encarnacion or Jose Bautista during the final year of their contracts was not an option because you were in playoff contention in 2016.

I do blame Atkins and Shapiro for not trading Josh Donaldson and Jay Happ prior to the 2018 season when it was clear the team needed to be re-tooled. I think the return would have been much greater than a minor league pitcher and two fringe major league players had they been moved in the off season.

During the game, I joked to my parents that the guy who pushed Lowry when Lowry went into the crowd was probably some Bay Area billionaire which is why he was not kicked out, any regular joe would have been kicked out for unnecessary contact with a player.

Urooj - you were spot on with your guess - are you psychic? I thought I heard them say he was escorted off the court? I could be wrong, and I can't remember if it happened in the 3rd or 4th - they may have just decided to leave him if it was in the 4th :/

June 6, 2019 @ 4:21 PM

Urooj Islam

@jj

Yes, as Toronto Mike mentioned, now they are saying he was escorted off the court and that he is "banned" for the rest of the Finals and "banned" from team activities, whatever that means for an owner.

What a bad look for the NBA, I am amazed at how well Lowry handled it considering how heightened everything must have been in that situation especially emotionally, 4th quarter in the NBA Finals with the series tied. He told the referee and they just ignored him but he kept calm and finished the game out strong.

All in all, just another entitled rich dude who thinks rules don't apply to him, anyone else or a player doing that to a fan and the suspensions would be long and harsh along with potential criminal charges.
