Holy Cow - these Raptors may just pull this off!

I am so fricken mad. That was not a very good basketball game last night. My Bucks lost. So much for the deer cake. I was planning to have a Bucks party with a deer cake, but here we go again losing another damn game. It really really sucks. I hate this already. Instead of my party, I think I'll just hide in a hole. Why does this have to happen. I am so angry, just so so angry. My Indians and Orioles also lost. That's no good, but this basketball game was really awful.

The Bucks didn't lose three in a row all season... until now.

The Bucks stop here tomorrow night!

Go Raps!

Thank you, Raptors, for all those 3-pointers. Free fries, here I come.

Go Raptors! I f-ing love this team. But one thing: Drake is so freaking annoying. He is just in this for the screen time. I'm so glad that at least he didn't ruin the Kawhi highlight when we won against the Sixers. If it was literally anyone else in the world doing his schtick on the courtside, they would get permanently banned. But no, as a reward he gets a $700k jacket.

May 24, 2019 @ 10:34 AM

It was an awesome win. I don't know if I can handle watching Saturday night,

In other news....I think I am done with Twitter. That platform is a cesspool of hate and anger. I have noticed my mental health improving since I stopped looking at it. I may get my news a little later than before but it's worth it.

I also just spent a week in Italy and I got to say.....it's pretty amazing. Rome is breathtaking.

May 24, 2019 @ 10:39 AM

I think Bambi gets the final buckshot right between the eyes Saturday night !
After 3 straight losses they are limping and bleeding bad.
Raptors will end the bleeding and win by 14 !

Over to the NHL where my new favorite team is The St. Louis Blues .

May 24, 2019 @ 12:16 PM

James Edgar

I'm cautiously optimistic for Tomorrow night. Here's hoping they can close it out. Still not 100% sure if I should watch or not. It's super frustrating if they come out flat. And that seems to happen regularly if i happen to be watching.

May 24, 2019 @ 1:12 PM

"Cautious optimism" is the name of the game for tomorrow night. I think we'll win, but I'm not counting these chickens until they hatch!

Brian Gerstein (Raptors Devotee)

This is now the pinnacle of my love affair with basketball and the Raptors. Never have I enjoyed a team more, and even had they lost last night and gone on to lose the series, I would feel the same way. I have been very vocal over the years that DeMar was just not good enough to elevate us in the playoffs to the finals, and that Casey also was continually slow to react and outreached every year. Great regular seasons, but never good enough to raise their game when it counted. Here we have Kawhi who has said all along that the 82 games are practice for him, and the real season starts come playoff time, and boy, has he delivered in spades. It is not only his play, but his experience in being there before, his calmness, lack of panic, that has showed his teammates how to act in late game situations. Yes, there was no LeBron to go through, but there is a Greek Freak, and he has been basically neutered by him. Obviously it is not over, Raptors are only 2 1/2 point favourites tomorrow but I do expect them to get the job done. If they do they will have home court against the Warriors, playing a team without KD and Cousins to start, and have the right amount of rest and recovery to jump into a quick 2-0 lead. A title only 5 wins away is there for the taking. Their defence and Nurse's coaching and adjustments show me that he will be able to contain the Warriors to a degree, but as Mike said, let's wrap up this series first, it is far from over.

May 24, 2019 @ 2:19 PM

wade

I am mesmerized watching Kawhi and when he took over the game again last night it hits you that this a basketball player the likes of which has never played for us before. Just sit back and enjoy!

Rob J

I hope Leonard's performance in these playoffs doesn't lessen the impact of Dougie losing all that weight in the spring of '93. Has Mike Richards gotten the definitive word yet on that incredible run from the man himself?

It's interesting, though, that the Leafs also played in the Conference Final(s) in 1994, 1999, and 2002, yet 1993 clearly has stood out through the years. (And yes, I know about the controversial game 6 in LA). I believe friend-of-the-show Damien Cox has even penned a recent tome detailing the '93 run.

My Bucks need to win tonight to stay alive. Come on Bucks. Why did they have to lose three in a row. Well, if my Bucks lose, the Warriors will win. Yes, they will. My Indians and Diamondbacks both won last night. That was great, but my Orioles blew it. That was not good. Remember Bruins are winning the cup. Next year it will be my Habs or Coyotes.

Because we were one win away in '93! That hasn't happened since!

And are arch nemesis was waiting for us in the finals... that year was going to be magic.

May 25, 2019 @ 9:28 AM

Rob J

@TM

Fair enough, For Toronto sports fans pre-Raptors, 1993 was certainly a wild time, especially from April-Oct. Meanwhile 'my' Dodgers were barely mediocre (though Piazza's rookie season was extraordinary), and 'my' North Stars were heading south (in the standings as well as geographically).

I have no doubt Luke Maile should go to the MLB All-Star game this July as a pitcher. By far he has been the most impressive of the 33 + pitchers the Jays have used this season.

I'm objective when it comes to the Jays, and I know the line is that they're 'rebuilding' (as are 2/3 of the 30 teams), but it really seems as though management just plumb forgot that the club is still scheduled to play 162 games in 2019, and that to do so, you need at least a modicum of MLB-level talent. How they went from ALCS to...this in 3 years is unfathomable.

May 25, 2019 @ 8:24 PM

This is the least Jays I've watched in... well... maybe since '82.

It's a combination of:

- Leafs and Raps playoffs
- busy family life
- running my own business
- lousy Jays team

Well, the "Black Widow' of sport team picking has struck again ! Seems the Deer got run over by a tractor trailer loaded with bricks. Deer meat on the BBQ for Sunday dinner ? I am so mad. That basketball game really really sucked last night. Well, hopefully the Warriors win. Well, if I hide in a hole, then you would shut this blog down and there would be no more open mike. That wouldn't be good, but I am not happy in the least. It sucks. It really really sucks. Go Warriors. My Indians lost again. Why are they losing so fricken much. My Orioles and Diamondbacks won though. That's great. Anyway, go Warriors.

I hate spending $, but an amazing feature (for me) is MLB.TV at $160 a year. Every team’s games available with several broadcast options for each. With ‘my’ team experiencing an unprecedented run of success (knock on wood), taking in the action has been a delightful diversion.

Random reminder that Cheryl's Ravens won in 2013 and her Cavs won in 2016. I'd kill (or at least maim) for 2 major titles in 6 years. I'm at 20 years and counting (granted, with only 2 teams on the ledger).

Yes, Cheryl has been a Royals fan since 1985 according to this article.

"CHERYL TRAUB, TORONTO

Of all the baseball fans in Toronto, how many love the Royals? You can count Traub among what has to be a small group.

Some years ago, Traub moved from Alberta, Canada, to Princeton, N.J., and finally on to Toronto.

She attended a school for the blind, eventually learning to be a medical transcriptionist. Using audio reports from doctors, she is able to to transcribe their notes to medical-records software.

Her first involvement with baseball came when the Royals were playing the Toronto Blue Jays in the 1985 ALCS. For some reason, she never connected to the Jays and their fans, but she liked baseball too much to give it up. So she rooted for the Royals.

In the 30 years since, her commitment hasn’t waned. And this postseason, she’s again listening to longtime broadcaster Denny Matthews call games between the Royals and Blue Jays.

Her favorite player? Center fielder Lorenzo Cain."

If I'd have known that 'my' Dodgers weren't going to win another title after 1988, I would have celebrated a lot harder at the time! But you always think it's the start of a dynasty...sadly, they actually finished under .500 in 1989. At least 'my' Stars made it back to the final(s) in 2000 a year after their title. Curse that Jason Arnott!!

@Cheryl
Do you live in Toronto?
If so WHY oh WHY do you despise all Toronto sports teams?
It's a great city with great sports teams that are competitive.
I & others commenting don't understand your reasoning.
Please answer questions on Open Mike & Thanks.

I just don't like the teams, their horns, fans, and announcers. I would rather cheer for other teams. I get Tunein Live from Amazon, $6.00 a month for any audio game, any sport. Better than MLB TV. Well, my Indians lost again. That's no good. My Orioles lost, but my Diamondbacks won. Bruins will win tonight. Also Warriors are the NBA champions again. If my Bucks didn't miss so many free throws, they would have won. I don't want to hide in a hole because I don't want this site to be shut down.

So I see Nick Nurse is coaching our men's ball team - does the coach need to be Canadian to do so? And if so, this means he is Canadian OR getting that passport fast tracked? He's been here for 5 years so it would make sense if he has citizenship.

Oh are they still playing Hackey ? Have totally lost interest. Real great, american $ runs NHL hackey .Regular season all teams play back to back games and also 3 games in 4 days so the NHL can take almost a week off in MAY and stretch the final into second week of June.
Only good thing is with Raptors playing at least 4 more games..Rogers / Robbers will be spending $$ producing shows/ Paying people for a product very few Canadians will be watching.
This is just icing on the cake for a company that treats It's customers like shirt !
Looks great on you rogers/Robbers..whot goes around comes around EH !..also Robbers, great job with your ball team..that seems to be workin out just fine...haha

May 27, 2019 @ 4:18 PM

James Edgar

@Neil Clarke Warren Sportsnet (Rogers) and TSN (Bell) will carrying games so quite a few people will be employed in production on TV and Radio. Judging by what i have heard the rating for the Raptors have been Good right across the country. So i'd think quite a few of us will be watching.

Not as many as would if a Canadian team was in the Stanley cup Final but still lots.

For what it's worth i HATE Hockey in June. It feels wrong to drag it out this far.

Of course if the Leafs were in the Final I'd never notice the calendar

May 27, 2019 @ 4:45 PM

Neil Clarke Warren

@ James Edgar Maybe I failed to clearly make my point ..Yes rogers/ROBBERS will be broadcasting finals games, which creates solid jobs which is also great for people.
BUT my point being..even the die hard hackey fan sitting in their mom's basement waiting for her to bring down a snack of a cheese sandwich & a pudding cupp is not at all exited bout a St. Lou vs Basstun final chances are they will flip on their X-Box and play vid games.

What I was getting at is about advertising rates for Robbers HAS to be way down big time.
Which I think is great for a company that constantly screws the customer over & over.

May 27, 2019 @ 5:31 PM

Rob J

Sucks about the Buckner news. I'd hoped that once he caught the baby on 'Curb' his legacy would be redefined. Interesting note that he was one of only 5 men to play in the 1960s and the 1990s. He also struck out in only 4.5% of his plate appearances; only Tony Gwynn had a lower rate.

And yes, his error in the '86 WS was iconic (partly due to Vin's epic call), but the game was tied at the time (due to a bullpen collapse), so even with the putout, Boston wouldn't have clinched victory. Plus the Sox led 3-0 in the 6th in game 7 the next night only to see the Mets roar back late, so there was plenty of blame to go around.

May 27, 2019 @ 6:07 PM

Cheryl

Well, my Orioles won. That's good because my Indians and Diamondbacks lost. Oh well, Bruins won game one, so three more to go. They get the cup this year, but remember it's Habs or Coyotes next year. Warriors win the championship again. Yes, they will in four or five. Go Warriors.

May 28, 2019 @ 7:04 AM

Hi Mike.

Can you ask Geets if he knew Reiner Schwarz in his CFNY days?

May 28, 2019 @ 8:11 AM

H.o.E.

I went past Woodbine yesterday for the first time in months, and you can see five big construction cranes though nothing else much above ground yet, with a 4200-seat entertainment venue apparently one of the things being built.
The opening of the new 5000-seat theatre at Fallsview seems to have been delayed until later this year by some kind of construction labour problem.
You'd think Rama might soon have trouble attracting acts to play there.
Supposedly the provincial government has decided a casino won't be involved in redevelopment of Ontario Place and Exhibition Place, but it will be interesting to see what plans eventually emerge. Would it really be practical to enclose the present amphitheatre to make it a year-round venue, or would it be a better idea to just build a completely new one back on The Ex grounds and let the rest of Ontario Place become like the eastern part with Trillium Park and Davis Trail?

Don't be afraid to say the name. Everyone knows "ROGERS" are a bunch of cheap pricks with bad service. They have a monopoly on Canadian baseball with the Jays & look at the team they give us. These guys have billions but cry poor. They are a media conglomerate but act like weasels in the business world.

No offence, but the whining here in the lead-up to an unprecedented moment in Toronto sports history reminds me of Blue Jay fans in Oct 2015, who’d waited 22 years for a playoff appearance only to bitch about the start-time of games and that the dome roof was closed. Enjoy the moment!!

Hi MIke. Although my name might be confusing It shouldn't be confused with David Marsden. Because our names were so close to each others I used the name James scott on air at CFNY-FM. I worked there from 1978 to 1990 on the afternoon drive show. Your site was suggested to me by Phil Evans (Captain Phil), Sorry I'm so late to the party. We chatted on the phone today and shared a ton of memories from that era. I worked at several stations over the years but none like The Spirit. I was pleasantly surprised to hear Dave Haydu from Pete and Geets fame was featured recently, As I mentioned to Phil today there was no other morning show like it. It was an honor to have worked with them. Anyway, keep up the great work., Glad I found you, Take care.
