Am I first?

Good time of year for sports fans. Baseball season starting! Masters golf. Hockey playoffs (Go Pens). Basketball playoffs (Go Raps).

Happy Friday everyone!

Well, that hockey game sucked last night. Bruins lost. I want the Lightning to win the cup anyway, but Bruins to win first round. They didn't do very well. Bad game for sure. Well, my Indians won. My Indians are doing great. My Orioles and Diamondbacks lost again though. Well, for the basketball, I need Nets, Magic and Bucks to win. Can they do it? I sure hope so.

TGIF! I am going to cut/trim my hair after 6 months, but I really wish I had more $$ for her to do something crazier with it.

Well I always thought the Trivago guy from TV who pitches cheap hotel rooms was pretty creepy.
Seems he was arrested recently in Houston for DWI. Here is his mugshot.

Speaking of locally famous homeless folks, noticeably absent from the downtown core is the troubled elderly woman dressed in all black who was constantly hunched over, screaming and shaking her fist at imagined terrors.

I often wonder what the process is for when these people exit this mortal coil. Cremation I'm sure, but one lives a whole lifetime only to be reduced to a digit on some spreadsheet. We are all made of stars, and then become zero's and one's...

April 12, 2019 @ 10:34 AM

bsmntdwllr73

@Ryan G
Moby also 'sang' about how we are all made of stars way back in 2002! As well, good call about
that longtime downtown hunchback staple. Back in the day she even made her way up such northern
environs as Yonge & Eligible!!

Ben Rayner was booked this week, but he was under the weather. He'll come over soon.

Doug Smith was booked for this morning, but he's had to take his wife to a medical appointment, and I have to go to Markham for my daughter's competitive dance competition, so whether this ep happens today is 50/50.

Damien Cox is over on Monday. Let me know if you have a question you'd like me to ask him.

And yes, it's just a coincidence that all three of the above write for the Star.

@bsmntdwllr73 I used to live in the Y/Eg area and it was awesome good times for much of my 30's. The Unicorn was a fave hangout with local cover band The High Rollers providing the soundtrack many a Saturday night. But when we struck out trying to meet laaaaaaydies, we'd go for last call at Chick'N Deli, figuring we'd have better luck with the, um, more mature women. Across from Chick'N Deli there was an old holdover club from the disco era that even had a disco era name.. Merlin's. I think it's a Shoppers now, but I distinctly remember dancing to Green Day's Basket Case in that joint when it first came out. Good times.

April 12, 2019 @ 10:46 AM

bsmntdwllr73

@Ryan G
Although I always had a major fondness for the more seasoned and fleshier group of women often
'lovingly' referred to as Cougars, I always lacked the brawn, good looks, charm, etc., presumably
required when seeking out such a 'discerning' group of ladies! For that I reason alone, I largely
segregated my visits to Chick N' Deli to late Tuesday afternoons as that is when their legendary
half-priced wings became available. Moreover, the past 15 years or so of hanging out in Toronto's
decaying downtown library system has taught me that the only things you can pick up in those
less-than-amiable places include bedbugs, lice and the mumps!!!

April 12, 2019 @ 11:07 AM

bsmntdwllr73

One of the perils in being a daytime habitual library dwllr(!) is that there is a very good chance that
at some point some kind of Parent and Baby drop-in group will be encountered. Absolutely nothing
wrong with that whatsoever, but one's ears (MINE!!) might inadvertently wind-up being exposed to
the likes of The Wiggles & their confounding cover version of Leo Sayer's Disco-era gem "You Make Me Feel Like Dancing"(1976). And, yes, I had to Google alternate versions of said track to discover
who the artist was, but those nifty Australian accents were a pretty good giveaway!! Always dug Mr.
Sayer's sweet proto-white-man's 'fro back in da day, but it was nowhere near as sweet as the Ginger
version sometimes sported by his fellow soft rock kingpin (well, at least in the U.K.!) Gilbert O'Sullivan,
Damn! Now I'll be singing that damn "Alone Again (Naturally)" as an interior monologue all afternoon.
But if the leaky shoe fits...

Doug Ford's brother was an addict and alcoholic. The Ford family has a long history of substance abuse and this asshole is doing everything he can to enable more drinking? Is that really what is a priority in this province? Did anyone even ask for it?

You can say we had 15 years of shit liberal leadership, but his so called plan to tackle the deficit won't be for another 5 years? Really? Even Wynne had a planner to tackle that sooner.

What Doug's budget has shown is much like Toronto Ontario doesn't have a spend problem they have an income problem. Which has only been made worse by decreasing corporate taxes.

What a god dam joke

April 12, 2019 @ 12:18 PM

bsmntdwllr73

@Ben V
Couldn't agree with what you wrote above more, but remember, that (ALLEGED!!!!) putz is just trying
to do a 'solid' for the charmless street core who always seem to show up for his events whenever
there is free food and booze on offer. Plus, the loosening on some of the constraints on gambling might just actually be of assistance/interest to one of this site's key sports betting enthusiasts!!

April 12, 2019 @ 12:30 PM

James Edgar

@ Ben V Not only a joke but a sick joke. The kind of joke even Jimmy Carr would shy away from. So is the "Transit Plan"

What can you do? This is what the province voted for. I was hoping that he'd at least be unintentionally entertaining but he's not even that.

If you take every ounce of charisma out of Donald Trump, you get Doug Ford.

April 12, 2019 @ 2:26 PM

Urooj Islam

I was quite surprised by the Leafs last night. I predicted Boston in five, which could still happen, but if the Leafs have the albatross out from their necks, then good for them. It's only one game, but a win in Boston right off the top is as good as we could ask for to start a series.

As for the Jays, they are entertaining but I may have to re-think my 75-80 wins prediction (I think that's what I said) and knock it down ten games. Vlad isn't going to change much all on his lonesome. This team is going to hurt for a few years, and as a long over 50, I can't do many more rebuilds.

April 12, 2019 @ 10:23 PM

Cheryl

What's wrong with the Lightning? Why did they have to lose two in a rwo? Well, the Bruins better not lose two in a row. My Nets play today as well as the Magic. Nets and Magic need to win. Baseball sucked last night with my Orioles, Indians and Diamondbacks all losing. That was no good.

That really is upsetting news. Haven't listened to him on Indie88, but I always enjoyed his dedication

Bookie was the first person I asked to come on the podcast who thanked me for the invitation but took a pass. At the time I got the sense he was very private. I always liked the value he added to the music, which great stories and tidbits. Very few do that anymore.

Bookie's great... he was the last 90s 102.1 jock to get the boot from that station (before Alan Cross returned). https://www.torontomike.com/2012/12/dave_bookman_fired_from_edge_1.html

I originally stopped listening to The Edge on that fateful Friday in January of 2001 when Alan
Cross announced that he was 'leaving' the station. I only resumed listening to any of their

New Music" program.

Same old playoff Raptors, team undergoes a complete makeover and has the same issues in the playoffs, three point shooting and defensive rebounding.

It's always life and death for this team in the playoffs even against significantly weaker teams.

April 13, 2019 @ 7:33 PM

Not surprised they lost as I believe the Raps are somewhat overrated going into the playoffs even though they had a good season. The dinosaurs will be hibernation after this series.

What are you talking about? I don't care if everyone is a fan of every Toronto sport. Honestly, cheer for the Bruins or Habs or nobody, I don't care. But taking delight in a Toronto team's failures on a Toronto-centric site? That's annoying, and if it's okay with you, I'll say so on my blog.

April 13, 2019 @ 9:29 PM

andrew

I am a Toronto fan with every sports team. Raps today were like the Bruins in 1st game with confidence & the away team wins. Too much confidence & weren't prepared against the Magic.
Today was Super Sports Saturday in Toronto - Raps lose, TFC lose, Leafs losing now,
@MIke
I don't take glee against Toronto failures & I want them to win as much as you but being realistic is our difference.
At least the Jays won today!!

Sigh.

I don't make a penny from regular blog readers. Not one red cent. This blog only pays me anything when ads are clicked, and ads are primarily clicked by people who come from Google. Joe Blow googles whatever he's looking for, ends up on my site, clicks an ad, and leaves.

These Open Mikes are 100% because I enjoy the conversations and community and so long as Cheryl needs a place to share, they'll be here. But not because they make me money, because they don't.

And you seem to have some chip on your shoulder b/c I took umbrage with Andrew's comment, which I found to be super annoying.

Oh.... and I didn't start this blog in 2002 as an ego trip. I started it because I was interested in web dev and writing, and I've always been a natural born archivist. I enjoy it, although I'm not enjoying this particular interaction.

Toronto playoff teams this year (as I think) Raps & Leafs have had great regular seasons but playoffs are more competitive & I don't think both Raps & Leafs will progress to 3rd of their playoffs.

Congratulations on scoring those tickets to that Raptors game on Tuesday, I hope you and James have a great time! Depending on where you're sitting, perhaps you might even catch a glimpse of major Toronto sports fan Geddy Lee? Back in the early days of the Raptors, I went to a handful of
games with my dad (his big shot lawyer brother had great seats at that time and although we saw
Mr. Lee up close on several occasions, I didn't feel like it would have been proper to say anything when he was on a civilian outing with his kid.) Several years after that while involved with a charity enterprise feeding the homeless, one of the volunteers was Mr. Lee's doubles partner at the Rosedale Tennis Club, but sadly she rebuked all my attempts at getting an introduction!! Additionally, decades earlier I went to the same junior high as Lee and Alex Lifeson and was taught by several of their former teachers (who were obviously near retirement at that point.) Small world indeed!!

Pretty confident in typing that notable hair metal parodists Steel Panther owe a most-heartfelt apology to Tiger Woods this morning, due to their quite foul "Just Like Tiger Woods" tribute track
from 2011. Hint: They weren't necessarily 'singing' 'bout his storied prowess with a putter!!! Well worth checkin' out on Youtube and/or Spotify, regardless!

Speakin' of more-than-slightly-under-the radar musical parodists, sad to read via a link provided
by that ever discerning pop cultural curator 12:36 that Greg Haymes, a.k.a., 'Sarge' from that great
underground (Albany, N.Y.) music collective known as Blotto passed away last week at the age of 69. Such tracks as "I Wanna Be a Lifeguard" and the immortal "Metal Head" were regular staples on
The New Music, City Limits and MuchMusic (at least in its first year or so). Truthfully, I hadn't thought about this band or their songs in beyond a dog's age, but now I'm definitely gonna go down a Youtube rabbit hole post-haste!

@Mike
Then you need to organize the All-Family episode of TM'd and hilarity will ultimately ensue!!
Maybe even get your newest sponsor, StickerYou, to make up some larger bingo-card sized stickers in advance so the home audience can perhaps purchase one and play along at home!!

bsmntdwllr73 I almost met everyone's second favorite pod-caster last month when I was in Mike's stomping grounds to visit a job site. Unfortunately our schedule's didn't sync. Now I don't want to jinx it, but I do have it on good record that Mrs. Beatts asked for time off right around the time of TMLX3 so you just may get to meet me and my better half....

April 16, 2019 @ 11:48 AM

LieveFamke

@Beatts, which half is your better half? You are wearing pants right?

@bsmntdwllr73

Right now, only one family member seems interested in being on the podcast, and that's the five year old.

April 16, 2019 @ 12:03 PM

Beatts

LieveFamke that question can only be answered AFTER I answer your question of whether I have pants on or not....

I almost met Beatts once... he was working close by and I would have biked to him to tug on his beard but I had to take my daughter to her ortho appointment.

And now I see Beatts already shared that story!

@Mike
A fellow Spectumite ( Jimmy, now-deceased) I once had the displeasure(!) of knowing was somewhat of a degenerate gambler and I once accompanied him and his wife out to Fort Erie racetrack, where he awkwardly tried to get an elderly and most-impressively bearded gent to allow him to tug on his whiskers for luck. When said fellow more or less politely declined, we ended up leaving due to so-called bad juju!! Later on that same day, we ended up at Fallsview and one of my Orthodox brethren(!!) was surprisingly more than happy to allow a wee little bit o' the chin tug for luck! And if memory serves, Mr. Jimmy actually made some money at the tables that day shortly there afterwards. Sadly, ol' Jimmy's luck ultimately ran out 'bout 5 years ago due to diabetic complications, even after he made a major push to somewhat clean up his act. sigh.

Looking forward to at least making some innocuous small talk with at least one-half of your
domestic coupling. Hint: Not necessarily the one who's virtually a more attractive doppelganger
for a (less) devastatingly handsome comedian/sometime actor!!

@Mike
Also looking quite forward to eventual return visits from both Steve Bannon of the North and Stu
Stone, but what about an encore performance from Bob Mackowycz (Jr.)?!? As I mentioned in
episode 400, his first appearance was one of my favourites. P.S. that call to your Google number
ultimately cost me around $6.00 just for less than 30 seconds of airtime. Then again, my inability
to subsequently buy a Mickey D's McPicks meal (at least for one day) was a more than worthy
substitute. Or at least my burgeoning Moobs would testify to that with some astounding visual proof!!

I can't wait for Toronto Mike to ask Jerry Howarth how he felt about all the impressions people did of him over the last few decades.

From the Don Landry ones to the Mike Richards "Evil Jerry Howarth" impression, there have been many of them.

Toronto Mike's REAL favourite team, the Pittsburgh Penguins, got unceremoniously swept out of the playoffs.

My condolences. I know this one hurts more than you'd care to admit.

After all, they are the team you've rooted for the most over the last 10-15 years.

The Pens have been by B team since Mario, but the gap between A and B is massive.

I mean the hockey game on Monday sucked because the Leafs beat the Bruins. Now the Lightning are gone as they lost last night. Things are crazy. Well, my Indians won last night. Great by my Tribe. My Diamondbacks also won, but my Orioles lost. The Magic lost. That's no good the Magic lost. They'll win the next game. My Bucks will win tonight and the Bruins will win tonight.

Good strong win by the Raptors yesterday. Luckily I dyed my hair on Friday gone, so you can't see the grays that have appeared due to game induced stress. Of course, we're all glad Kyle scored some points. His non scoring in game 1 was no bueno, we need buckets to win!

Tampa Bay blowing it all on round one is kinda sad, as a fan I would be devastated. But Beatts tweeted a clip where some TB guy is being super cocky and ... yeah, no bueno.

April 17, 2019 @ 9:24 AM

bsmntdwllr73

Do my hungry ears deceive me, or is that indeed Jack Armstrong doing a voiceover at the end of
several new Mickey D adds starring a couple of Raptors double-dipping some McNuggets?!?

April 17, 2019 @ 9:34 AM

jj

bsmntdwllr73 - I think I saw that ad last night too, so you are right!!

April 17, 2019 @ 10:06 AM

bsmntdwllr73

@jj
I've only got one channel, and over the past four or five days I've seen those ads at least 50 times!!!

April 17, 2019 @ 10:08 AM

jj

bsmntdwllr73 - i only see ads when i watch real tv, which is now really just raptors games. i stream/netflix everything else.

April 17, 2019 @ 11:00 AM

bsmntdwllr73

@jj
Sadly, I'm perpetually too broke/cheap to ever go down that particular rabbit hole and while I used to
be able to watch a lot more of the non-Peak TV era shows at the library, late last summer TPL
in conjunction with the local broadcast networks kinda put a kibosh on all that. Guess it's a good
thing that I'm both an avid reader and a proud hoarder of a large physical music collection!!

April 17, 2019 @ 11:13 AM

@bsmntdwllr73

There's also a Keg Steakhouse ad with both Jack Armstrong and Matt Devlin acting like they're best friends. That gets played a whole bunch every day as well.

I bet Leo Rautins feels left out, I hope Toronto Mike asks him if he does next month.

April 17, 2019 @ 2:33 PM

bsmntdwllr73

@Urooj Islam
I don't think that I've caught that commercial yet, but that's probably for the best. Mickey Dee's
cheap menu is sadly all that I can currently afford, well, at least until their next batch of coupons are
issued in a month or two!! Besides, I haven't been to the Keg in years and I wasn't exactly impressed
with my last meal there.

April 17, 2019 @ 2:40 PM

Urooj Islam

@bsmntdwllr73

Oh yeah, I'm with you. I've never been to the Keg in my life, I was just amused by their ad featuring Toronto sports broadcasters.

Neither ad prominently featuring Jack Armstrong is still a match for the Harvey's ads with Joe Bowen.

April 17, 2019 @ 2:56 PM

bsmntdwllr73

@Urooj Islam
Damn, I haven't seen that ad either, and to think, I found myself 'dining' at a Harvey's location in Scarborough just the other day!!

April 17, 2019 @ 3:14 PM

Beatts

@jj I was watching that game when the Tampa player said that to the Columbus player.... As a goalie (who's superstitious) I was yelling at the screen " You idiot! You jinxed yourself!" and in the end, karma played it's role....

April 17, 2019 @ 3:26 PM

bsmntdwllr73 - i miss reading! i have to get back into it

Beatts - yeah, definitely bit him in the ass!

The hockey game last night was better. Bruins won. That's good. Bruins in six. I'm calling it. How about those Bucks. They won. That's great. They are up two games to none. My Nets will win tonight. My Indians won. Carlos Carrasco pitched a gem. Jake Bowers hit a home run. My Tribe are so good. My Diamondbacks also won in extras, but my Orioles lost again. Why do my Orioles always lose? Well, we'll have a Chief Wahoo cake this year. That would be great.

Yay! It looks like the ridiculous and completely pointless ritual of moving our clocks twice a year may finally have ended by this time next year.
680news.com
"... bill, which passed first reading Wednesday with unanimous support, would see all of Ontario move clocks forward in March 2020, but then never move again... the United States is bringing a similar bill before Congress."
Europe is also doing it.

Friendly reminder: Doug Ford (ALLEGEDLY) lead the charge to cut by half the funding for the Southern Ontario Library Service 'cause he is obviously basically illiterate. Plus, he is dependent on the graphics at the fast food places he visits in order to make up his mind, though from the current looks of things, it kinda just looks like he simply says "I'll have one of everything." Like I should ever talk, what with my less-than-trim, not-ready-for-summer (or any season, mind you) bod!!!

@j.j.
Don't feel too bad 'bout not having as much time as you'd like to read. Believe me, most of the
time I only do it to try and lessen my ever-increasing tedium/torment. Yeah, perhaps it would sometimes be nice to have other things to do, but like Mick and the gang once famously proclaimed in song, "You Can't Always Get What You Want>" Yeah, no duh!!!

Just thought I'd put it out there, but yesterday I came across the line-up for Cosmo Music's
annual CosmoFest, taking place on Saturday June the first: Sloan, Finger Eleven, Terra Lightfoot,
and most impressively, CHILLIWACK!! Free event, but pre-registration is required on their
website.
