Slipped in again.

Happy Friday :)

Well, how about those Habs. They won and that's great and they shut the Islanders out. Well, they play Barfalo next tomorrow. Barfalo will be sick and they will barf everywhere after my Habs beat them. See, Barffalo. Well, Coyotes were not so good. They lost. That's no good. They scored the first goal, but lost the game. My Suns also lost by a bunch. Well, tonight my Cavs and Nets will win. Baseball sucked last night. My Orioles, Indians, and Diamondbacks all fricken lost. That's no good.

Brian Gerstein (Raptors Devotee)

Today is 2 months since my dietician visit, and closing in on losing 20 pounds, which I am determined to do, but do it organically. I am more than fine to build muscle mass and that weighs more than fat. This is now permanent, I have more than passed the time frame where I will revert to my former ways. Last night I played basketball after the March Break, and had my best game in years, so the progress is helping me there, and I can't wait for softball season to start.

I can not emphasize enough how these changes can be made at any age, so be smart and don't wait until you are almost 55 to do them. If you need any guidance or accountability I am happy to help out, just reach out to me. I believe that strongly now that if I can do it, others can as well. It is actually fun to do once you get going after the initial shock of changing your bad habits.

March 22, 2019 @ 9:14 AM

I had my physical yesterday. I remain the same weight I was in High School (30 years ago). I probably drink too much. Eat way too much fast food. Somehow, I have a high good cholesterol level and that offsets my bad cholesterol. I'll hit 50 next year - I do notice body changes. Stay tuned!

March 22, 2019 @ 9:29 AM

If you're at all interested in spaceflight, the new 'Apollo 11' documentary is worth seeing in a good theatre, even if you think there can't possibly be anything new or interesting in it. Here's a review.
Apparently I missed the chance to see it in IMAX (it seems museums, presumably Science Centre, may get a version less than half the full-length), but the sound in the TIFF theatre on King St. seemed very good to me, and it was mostly empty at 4:45 pm.
Last week you mentioned the record stores that were on Yonge near Dundas. The former HMV will become a pot store.
Uh, yeah, that's what that area needs -- something else to attract even more drug users, derelicts, etc.
Oh well, I suppose there's worse places it could have gone.

March 22, 2019 @ 9:53 AM

Brian Gerstein (Raptors Devotee)

That's fantastic Rick! I, like you, had a physical just prior, my first in 5 years, and tested out fine, my GP had no concerns, but at the same time who knows what the future holds, so it is so much better to take pre-emptive action so you don't have to face any issues in the years ahead, plus you feel so much better in the present. Keep me and us posted on your progress!

No time, no comment... but I pop in every week to see what's happening.

Mike, your podcasts fill up the majority of my listening time. I'm excited when a new one drops. Michael Grange was excellent. Thank you for this.

Always seems to be windy on Fridays for our garbage day.
I have 2 garbage cans and 1 blue bin up against my house, but no one puts their address on these things. Mine are all marked, and my neighbors have returned them all.
I am now over stocked since the last wind storm!

Fascinating opposites.

I slide in somewhere in the middle. My young man weight was 150-155. I have been as high as 203 and for the past several years I've clocked in at 180. I use a treadmill three times a week, and I walk a trail (30-60 minutes) three or four times per week in the non-bitchy months.

We have always eaten healthy, yet I do have slightly high cholesterol so I have to be careful. And by healthy I mean a proper, well-rounded diet with the occasional cheat night thrown in. We don't do vegan or vegetarian, thank you, but fill your boots if that's your cuppa.

The smartest thing I ever did was quit boozing 25 years ago. Today I am 55 and healthier in body and mind than I have ever been. As was said above, if I can do it...

March 22, 2019 @ 10:15 PM

Rick C in Oakville

Too funny Mike, I haven't heard that song in about 20 years , a friend of my dads was nick named windy for obvious reasons.

March 22, 2019 @ 10:16 PM

Well, my Cavs had a lead, but they blew it and lost. Go figure. My Nets won though. That's great. My Orioles lost and got shut out. My Indians and Diamondbacks both won though. It's a hockey day today with my Coyotes playing this afternoon and my Habs playing tonight. My Coyotes are at 1:00 and my Habs at 7:00, so this is perfect. They're spaced out so there is a break in between them. They'l both win of course.

March 23, 2019 @ 7:16 AM

Brian - congratulations, that's so good. Rick, good luck.

I wish I weighed what I did in high school. I'm only 31, but gained a lot of weight in the last few years. I weigh more than pregnant ladies! But I have lost some weight and I am stoked. I am hoping to get some hiking/walking in this summer.

Rick C - I am laughing because Elvis complained during the Christmas episode 2018 that people put their bins out early for no reason LOL. Not related, but I always think of it when I see bins. Ours are not marked either, so I should definitely do that.

Will Scott Tucker and Maura Grierson soon be hosting Hamilton's 95.3 morning show?

March 23, 2019 @ 9:54 AM

Rick C in Oakville

@ jj, the only problem I have with the neighbors putting out the night before, are the ones pitting their green bins out, and the raccoons always get into them.
Currently taking down my xmas lights, and Boom 97.3 just played MJ' s Pretty Young Thing. Guess they haven't stopped as with other stations.

March 23, 2019 @ 10:00 AM

8 yrs for that?

Everyone that donated to the Humboldt fund should be livid. All those hockey sticks left on porches.....where are you now? Don't hear you?

You demonstrate for pathetic issues but are quiet on this one.

This was a MAJOR story went it happened, but the sentencing seemed quiet. Why is that? Lets just move on.

The devastation that this piece of shit caused not only then but its lasting effects is mind-numbing. & 8 yrs means probably 3. Laws need to be changed on vehicular manslaughter. Hell Muzzo even got 10 yrs for killing that family while drunk.

Fake tears all over Canada.

March 23, 2019 @ 12:40 PM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

I'm not sure I follow.... you want everyone who put out sticks for the Humboldt victims to be outraged at the sentencing here as if those two things are somehow linked?

"Fake tears all over Canada" is a ridiculous statement. It's entirely reasonable for a nation to mourn the victims and understand the vehicular manslaughter sentencing. Mourning the loss does not require one be outraged here.

No wonder you signed this comment with a different name than usual.

It's good to be outside on a clear night that isn't face-freezingly cold. I saw a point of light rising in northwest a little after 9:30, and thought it might have been the International Space Station -- and it was.

The Maple Leafs have not gone to a single shootout this season with 7 games to go.

Can they go a whole season without going to a shootout?

March 23, 2019 @ 10:49 PM

Well, my Coyotes lost in a shootout. That's no good. They need to win. Well, my Habs had a good game beating up on Barfalo. That's wonderful. They will do it again tonight. My Suns lost another one. That's no good. My Cavs will win this afternoon though. My Orioles lost another one just by a little run. My Indians and Diamondbacks won though.

March 24, 2019 @ 7:42 AM

Went to Ontario Place cinesphere last night to see Pulp Fiction. I have a terrible memory, as although I saw this movie back in the day, I literally didnโ€™t remember anything so it was great - like watching a brand new movie.
Ontario Place is really showing itโ€™s age. Everything needs a deep clean and paint job at minimum.
Sure hope they dont put a casino there and opt instead for massive open parklands.

March 24, 2019 @ 10:36 AM

Urooj Islam

I'm sure most of the people attending that screening showed their age as well and needed a deep cleaning and a paint job as well.

So, it's fitting that Ontario Place does as well.

It kind of seemed to be a firewall issue ... like it would just time out trying to connect. I believe my wife was explicitly blocked from accessing some particular site.

March 24, 2019 @ 7:00 PM

Well, not a great sports night. My Habs and Cavs both lost. Oh well. My Coyotes lost as well. Anyway, my Habs were winning, but they lost it. Baseball sucked as well. Everyone lost, my Orioes, Indians and Diamondbacks all lost. Not good at all. Well, my Suns and Nets better win tonight. That would be great if they could.

March 25, 2019 @ 7:01 AM

Rick C - I agree about the raccoons, hopefully your nieghbours get the hint.

T - we get it, you're upset that people aren't upset that he didn't get life in jail.
Neither did Marco Muzzo, who had multiple driving convictions before he killed an entire family - hope you showed your outrage then.

@Urooj - You're right, his biggest punishment is that a possibly plentiful life is now over. He will live with this for the rest of his life. My grandad's brother just passed away due to a MVA, and I felt a lot of sympathy for the driver -I feel badly for this guy too, but his punishment will be lifelong, even if he is not in jail.

Also, I went on two dates in the last two weeks and I am overwhelmed. Dating is not for the faint of heart or too overly romantic i.e - me.

March 25, 2019 @ 2:47 PM

Jody Thornton

I just went back on to OK Cupid and POF. So I'll soon enough get a taste of dating in 2019. What makes you "overly" romantic? (this I have to hear :) )

March 25, 2019 @ 3:00 PM

Jody - after one date, I just get super overwhelmed and in my mind have super grandoise ideas of where things are going looooool. So far I have managed not to convey this to this particular person, I hope. But good chemistry always makes me very extra hopeful. Maybe intense is better than overly romantic, haha.

I actually met someone nice off OK Cupid but the timing wasn't right. I wish you luck!

March 25, 2019 @ 3:34 PM

@jj - good luck!! I met my husband online.. and that's why I have to miss TMLX3, it's our 10 year anniversary! The process was horrible though, there were some doozies.... I was going to give up and take down my profile at the end of the month and he found me with only a few days to spare!

@Jody good luck as well! Not sure what you are looking for.. Jody is a unisex name... ;)

And speaking of doozies.. I heard on Humble and Fred today that Dean Blundell is 'supposedly' coming on this Thursday... I put it in quotes.. b/c I have to hear it to believe it.

Important tip: Never inadvertently try to solicit sympathy from someone when they
are in Poland (at an international track meet), 'cause there is a very good chance that
they will undoubtedly answer back with "I've just returned from visiting Auschwitz", in order to put your (Read: MINE!!) otherwise middling/miserable melodramas into clearer perspective
((didn't work, BTW!!!). Not trying to make light of a very serious subject, but the only
reason this person contacted me in the first place was to provide me with some online
links to watch his forthcoming track heats later on this week. When I subsequently informed
him that my so-called life (no ancient Claire Danes TV inference meant whatsoever!), was
circling the drain at an ever-increasing clip, aside from a brief perfunctory nod to propriety
via a perfunctory "there there", a promise of a future 'trip' update was the best that he
could offer. Sad, really, 'cause otherwise he really is an extremely considerate gent. But
I guess that ultimately my ongoing pathetic situation is far too grim for him to deal with
at an even greater length. Perhaps try being fully submerged in it 365, buddy?!?

And in other scintillating Parkdale news, I prematurely found myself stirred awake
at the ungodly time of 5:30 A.M. this morning by strange noises coming out of my
washroom (a literal shithouse straight out of the "Saw" series of films or that underrated
mid-period Jennifer Connelly flick "Dark Water"!! Anyhoo, I was totally- creeped-out by
the disturbing sight of a baby mouse loudly rockin' it out in my gnarly bathtub. So when I tried
to deal with that not-entirely unexpected situation, Fievel the Ninth(?) instantly contorted
itself back down the bathtub drain. NOICE!! Now if I happened to live in the current century,
well, then, I would have simply called upon either Alexa or Siri to start blarin' out "Somewhere
Out There" (James Ingram, R.I.P.!!) to help make the early mornin' magic complete. 'Real
Life' just doesn't get any better or more hardcore than this...

@bsmntdwllr73 -- If possible, you need to close off any access points where any varmints can get in and out (and that goes for anything smaller too, like insects), though I realize that can be difficult in older crappier places.
BTW, the Canada Day tribute band thing at Woodbine Park (Link) appears to be happening again, but if it's like recent years a full line-up doesn't appear until late May on the radio station's website.

March 26, 2019 @ 9:20 AM

March 26, 2019 @ 9:22 AM

Thanks for the tip, but unfortunately pretty sure that I crossed "the things could be worse"
point in my Parkdalian shitshack eons ago! Quite confident in writing that the infamous
Hanoi Hilton was probably more 'hospitable' to its most-unfortunate P.O.W. 'residents'.
All signs are pointing to my building being not-too-far-off from the dreaded renoviction and/or
demolition stage in the very near future. Sure do hope, then, that my inevitable future home at
CAMH (Queen St. location, gotta stay close to my present 'hood!) has lots of available computer
access so I can continue to freely post my copious missives from the outer fringes!!

Sadly, as for keeping various varmints out, that epic battle was lost long ago, And yet I do believe that the prescient title of an immortal, Proto-rap metal classic JAM from KISS stated it

March 26, 2019 @ 9:48 AM

FWIW I'm dating in somewhat unique circumstances (poly/open marriage), but I found Tinder to be by far the best for it. There's just by far the most people on it.

I'd say it's (counter-intuitively) easier for men than women. As a man, it may feel a bit demoralizing to swipe through thousands of profiles to get matches, but then the filtering is mostly done for you by then. Women easily get piles more matches ... but then it's a hell of a lot more work to converse with them and figure out if it's someone you actually want to meet. And oh my lord there are so many stupid men trying to get dates. If you can be respectful, use grammar, and actually converse, you're ahead of 95% of other men on the app.

People seem to dismiss Tinder as highly superficial (each profile you first see a picture of the person, and probably that's enough for some people, especially those just looking to hook up). I found in practice, very few women seemed to be actually looking for casual sex -- at least in my age group (mid-30s).

My strategy was to immediately check for a written profile. If there was none, I'd make that a hard pass. Then I'd read the profile looking for some indication of compatibility -- common interests, and especially someone open to dating a happily-married man. THEN I'd check the photos to make sure there is attraction.

It was an interesting way to spend down time ... and has been very good to me. Everyone I met in person was absolutely lovely. I did meet someone I've been dating regularly for a few months now. She's not a "threat" ... she's fiercely-independent and has a couple other partners. She's so compatible, my wife and her are friends!

I got some decent conversations out of OKC, nothing out of Bumble. Haven't tried POF.

March 26, 2019 @ 1:08 PM

TM - I don't actually like to date more than one person at a time :/ BUT I can see if this dude would be into it? I already know he'd be at work.

LieveFamke - good point about the name tags!!

Jody- be open to anything and everything, that is always what my friends encourage me to do. it just took me a while to be open for it. and because this is a set up, i am very trusting of my friend's judgement (for me anyway :p)

@Anon- you are spot on. What an interesting experience you're in, glad it has worked for you and your wife. Personally, once a guy cannot maintain conversation with me, I am over it. And OKC/Bumble flustered me because there is so much choice. I did some dates, nothing really stuck though.

March 26, 2019 @ 2:32 PM

I am really excited for the Keegan Matheson episode tomorrow and the 2019 Blue Jays season preview but unfortunately, I can't think of anything specific to ask him.

The Blue Jays are handling their rebuild perfectly (eating a lot of money to get Martin and Tulowitzki off the roster, no bad long-term contracts left on the team, signing veterans to 1-year deals and hoping they gain enough value to be flipped for something by the deadline) now we just have to see how it plays out.

I'll tell you one thing, I am excited to attend some games this year now that the 2015-2016 bandwagoners have gone away, maybe when the team calls up Vlad Jr. and Bo Bichette.

March 26, 2019 @ 2:55 PM

Thanks! I hate to be 'anon' but my family is mostly unfamiliar with the situation.

Also for the record, it took ~nine months to get to this good place, and my wife is the one who wanted to open the marriage after being monogamous together over twelve years. So originally, "poly under duress", to borrow a phrase.

The thing is, every step of the way our relationship got better and stronger, despite the occasional bouts of hurt. I truly feel we're beyond any more painful feelings nowadays.

It started with her exploring online and really finding her libido again, which obviously benefited me immensely. She didn't expect to fall for one of the guys she'd been talking to. The irony is that they've never actually met in person, yet. They fully intend to. She's had some more casual experiences locally.

Eight years in jail and certain deportation....Urooj Islam, you are right. The most important part of this young man's sentence is that he will not have the opportunity to rebuild his ruined life in this fantastic country. I don't envy him, Nor do I envy the victims of his carelessness. At least he showed remorse. He took responsibility for his actions, Let him do his jail time (all of it), and be returned to his country of origin, and let's move on. Humboldt will always remain. Him, not so much.

March 26, 2019 @ 9:37 PM

@ Toneman the Leaf Fan
Honestly I feel sorry for the driver. He showed remorse from day 1 & acknowledged he was guilty.
Eight years & possible deportation is the sentence & we have to live with that & I think that is enough.
The bus co, who hired him, has there been any questions to them as he was only on the job for a very short while & should be accountable also.
Cannot forget those that passed away & others who survived. Humboldt Strong.

The Humbold tragedy is shitty all around. Say what you will about the driver but he has shown remorse, he feels aweful, and no matter the sentence, he's the one that has to live with what he did and that right there is a life sentence. could've happened to anybody. We're all guilty of running a stop sign at some point.

Any thoughts out there on the Leafs chances in the playoffs? And yes, this includes you, Cheryl,

March 27, 2019 @ 12:08 AM

Leafs won't do well in the playoffs. No, they won't. Bruins will beat them in the first round. I'm not saying the Bruins will win the cup because the Habs or Coyotes will win it. I know this, but Bruins beat Leafs in the first round. Habs win the eastern conference. Coyotes will win the west and then they'll both meet in the finals. Well, my Habs had a great game last night. Tomas Tatar is so awesome scoring two goals and getting an assist. The Habs are winning when it matters. My Coyotes won as well. That's great. This is it. Habs and Coyotes will win when it matters. My Cavs lost another one though. That's not good. Hopefully my Suns will win tonight. Baseball sucked last night as my Indians and Diamondbacks lost. My Orioles didn't play. Opening Day tomorrow. A whole afternoon of baseball.

March 27, 2019 @ 7:14 AM

Anonymous - aw poly under duress! i am glad it's worked out for you, and that you're both happy and enjoying a stronger bond. and now both of you have found someone special!

Re the Humboldt driver - I too, feel a lot of sympathy for him. No one's life will be the same after this - the poor families, the men who have to recover and re adapt to their new lives, and the driver. Sigh!

My Cavs will also win tonight and so will my Nets. Nets are the NBA champions this year. Both Nets and Bucks will make it to the eastern final and Nets will win it. Trust me.

If any Toronto athlete needs "load management" right now it's Frederik Andersen but Babcock seems to be fixated on catching Boston in the standings (which won't happen) so he keeps riding him.

Can't wait to see Cheryl's comments on new Open Mike tomorrow if she can find it.
ALL of her teams - Baseball, Hockey & Basketball lost tonight.
So sad.

Shame about those poor Habs, eh? Up 2-0, end up losing 6-2 and falling out of the last wildcard spot... Ah, ya hate to see that. Oh, well that's life.

On a happier note, @Urooj Islam, it looks like the Leafs are going to go with Sparks on Saturday. I agree, Andersen needs some rest.
