@Max power

On that note, TSM reports that the TSN afternoon drive show beat PTS in key demos this past month. Although I don't listen to either anymore, unless I'm in the car (in which case I toggle between Here and Now and PTS), I'm going to need to see proof of this. If true, it's pretty remarkable.

But my sports audio show of choice is Hebsy on Sports.

Well, my Coyotes played a good game last night. They won. That's great. My Habs lost though. That was not good. My Indians beat my Diamondbacks. Boy, those two teams play each other so much. My Orioles lost again. Well, clock changing if you don't have automatic changing clocks. I'm lucky to have automatic changing clocks. I just wish it would get warm. I don't care if it gets really hot. Well, I do because exercising in extreme heat is not good, but I'll take it over all this winter junk we're getting. I hate cold weather and snow. I always have. That was back in the boarding school days when I had to go out for recess. I hated recess except when it was raining and we could stay indoors.

I hope this gets attention here so that Canadian and American governments will quickly follow the Europeans and move to stop the completely pointless twice-a-year clock changing. Just stay on summer time year-round, like Saskatchewan has been doing all along.
EU takes step toward nixing summer-wintertime clock change

Okay -- bad joke -- in this case, they've had it right, decades ahead of the rest of us.)

The heat better watch its back, cause Cheryl has it in her laser-focused crossfire(s)
and she's just not gonna stand for it, No Sir!! Won't be long, then, before she's urgently
imploring trustworthy, old reliable Melvin to make with that hot button cultural misappropriation
and arrange for some timely rain dances in order to help cool things down just a smidge.
"Rain Dance", great Guess Who deep catalog track (and, btw, a number 3 single on the
Canadian charts back in the heady summer of 1971, btw. Say,right around the original
emergence of those CanCon regulations.) Myself, well, I was a little less than two years
away from making my long-ordained, quite Damien-esque entrance into this mortal coil at that
point!

And in more exciting news. very excited to read that the awesome Stray Cats will be
releasing their first studio album in over 25 years, entitled "40", on May the 24th. Very
underrated band and the same thing can be said to the nth degree with regards to the
superlative guitar-slinging abilities of Brian Setzer! No local concert date announced as
of yet.

Did anyone know there was sketch comedy fest going on? It seems they've loosely applied the name to include comedians who have been involved in sketch shows. Sasheer Zamata, who was a an SNL cast member not too long ago, has shows tonight and tomorrow,
torontosketchfest.com
and Scott Thompson is among the many others, almost all of them I've never heard of.

I can't remember a time before Alex Trebek. I've always enjoyed Jeopardy! and recently introduced my 14 year old daughter to it. She's also very upset by this news.

March 8, 2019 @ 2:51 PM

bsmntdwllr73

@Mike
My uncle passed away from Pancreatic cancer nearly three years ago, and that was after one brief
remission period. He was of a similar vintage to Alex Trebek, perhaps a year or so younger. (I had
no relationship with him at that point, but I received regular updates on that horrendous health
battle from my now also deceased aunt (his older sister).

March 8, 2019 @ 3:19 PM

H.o.E.

The pre-Trebek Jeopardy host (seen in the Weird Al 'I Lost On Jeopardy' video), Art Fleming, died of pancreatic cancer.

March 8, 2019 @ 3:27 PM

bsmntdwllr

@H.o.E.
I did not know that Spooky, spooky stuff. Sure as hell hope that hosting Jeopardy! doesn't turn
into the game show version of that long-held belief of THE SUPERMAN CURSE. Let Alex pull through
for however long as possible, but at the same time, I also hope that the future host is more of a Ken Jennings type and less of the dreaded Brad Rutter variety. Then again, something tells me that
when that day inevitably comes, the producing powers that be will go in an entirely different
direction (female and or/visible minority). Again, not hating, just stating a personal opinion here,
and one that has also been raised in more informed corners of the 'Net.

March 8, 2019 @ 3:36 PM

Weirdly, it seems 1960s-70s-80s TV and movie actor Jan-Michael Vincent died almost a month ago without anyone reporting it. I guess he wasn't famous enough? I can't say I watched much of anything he was in, but the name sounds familiar.

All about maintenance now, reached my goal to stay between 170 and 175 pounds, healthy BMI there, going to build some muscle mass and more toning. Happy weekend everyone! I will be listening to Angel Eyes, and the other couple Jeff Healey Band songs that I know of, since they are just so damn good.

Well, my Habs lost again. This sucks. They got beat. I slept through most of it, but worth sleeping through. My Cavs lost. That was no good at all, but they lost. They better win on Monday. I need them to find a way to win on Monday. No Habs tonight. My Coyotes play tonight though. In baseball, my Indians lost again and my Diamondbacks lost again, but my Orioles won. Well, I don't know why we change clocks either. It's dumb, but my clocks do it automatically. It's a sign of warmer weather. It's about time we had spring. This winter was really too much.

The Trebek news sucks, been a Jeopardy! watcher for over 20 years and it's one of the few things my family and I always did together growing up.

I always wondered, is there any kind of nod to him in Sudbury? I know we have some regular commenters who live there. I always wondered if there was some sort of Alex Trebek museum or statue there. If not, we better get started on one.

March 9, 2019 @ 1:56 PM

Brian Gerstein (Raptors Devotee)

Thanks Mike, JJ, and Rick for the good wishes. Just came back from a 2-hour workout at the gym, and feel great. I have good days and bad days with my hips, and today was a good one, and do not take it for granted. Rick, what you do and don't put in your mouth and how much makes all the difference in the world, so I get how travelling so much makes that part almost impossible to manage. Hopefully you will be able to eventually find a way to make it work, as the pay-offs are worth it. Mike, that big hill I had to walk the bike up last summer, I am pretty confident I can take it now. I want a redo! Just have to wait for actual Spring weather, as I am not in your class of year-round biking

Anyone know what happened to Mike Bullard? His show is no longer on Sauga960AM. Barry Davis has a show in that time slot. & glad to see Mike Richards back. His morning show on Sauga960AM is way more entertaining that any of those other hacks on the dial.

That station has huge financial problems and a lot apparently payroll was missed. Barry Davis and Mike Richards sell their own ads and finance their own operations, so they're not reliant on a paycheque from the station.

I didn't know anything about that Sauga960 station other than what I mentioned in a comment here last week, that there sure didn't seem to be much paid advertising during the brief times I listened from their website. But after reading a thread on another board, it seems there's four different owners, and apparently one or two of them have a 'shady' past, and it seems some people were kept working when there appears to have been no honest intention of paying them.

March 10, 2019 @ 9:35 PM

Cheryl

Well, my Suns won last night. That's great. Great going for my Suns. They're heating up and preparing for next season. Well, my Cavs must win tonight. I really really need them to win. They have to find a way to get an upset. Also my Nets will win tonight. My Coyotes will win tonight as well. Baseball was pretty good yesterday. My Indians really won big. That was great. My Diamondbacks won two split squad games which was awesome but my Orioles lost. Adam Jones signed a contract with my Diamondbacks. He used to be on my Orioles. Now he goes to my Diamondbacks.

So I've read quite a lot about the accidental heroin overdose of a local superstar chef
over this past weekend. And while I never ate at any of the restaurants he happened
to be associated with, his name did repeatedly pop-up in Toronto foodie coverage over
the years. Regardless, over the past couple of years publications such as Toronto Life
have run numerous articles about some of the so-called 'rock star' chefs currently
dominating this city's culinary hot spots. Usually their serious substance abuse is in the
rear view mirror, but at first it really surprised me how much hard core drug use was
prevalent in certain circles of that particular realm.

Look, I know all about depression, trauma, longing and loss and all sorts of other
often quite debilitating issues. However, I also know that in my personal case, all
the booze and drugs in the world would barely make a minimum down payment on my
seriously wounded soul. So at an early age I made a very conscious decision to never go
down those rather dark avenues. Sad to repeatedly see such creativity end up being
snuffed out far too prematurely.

Which reminds me: I'm a big fan of reading album liner notes (especially when they
are as hilarious as the likes of all Boston records from "Third Stage" on), but one of
my absolute all-time favourties belongs to the very obscure glam metal band Nitro and
their awesome 1989 "O.F.R." album. At that time we were well past Nancy Reagan and
her infamous "Just Say No" campaigns by that point, and yet Nitro certainly didn't want
to miss out on belatedly being a small part of any of that potentially amazing life-saving
action. And now, here is that heartfelt message included by that band at the bottom of
their debut album's booklet:

"Drugs R 4 Dumb Fucks. Don't Be A Dumb Fuck"

Well, since Nitro have sadly been lost to the delete bins of time,(although their singer
Jim Gillette went on to marry, have a couple of sons and ultimately divorce an in-her-
prime Lita Ford, lucky dude!!) So in conclusion, I guess the people who probably most
needed to read and follow that most sensible mission sadly missed out. And of course
countless more will thusly follow. It's evolution, baby!!

March 11, 2019 @ 3:37 PM

bsmntdwllr73

Brief correction to my above comment: The now-deceased gentleman referred to in my above comment
worked in and wrote about the local restaurant industry but I'm not entirely sure that he was a chef. I think
that I was confused due to his satiric Twitter handle of Chef Grant Soto. Sorry for any confusion.

Disgusting as Leafs losing 5-1 to best team in NHL (good luck in the playoffs) & Raps losing to the WORST team in the NBA by 14 late in 4th qtr. Time for watching paint dry & then going to bed.

March 11, 2019 @ 9:03 PM

Don't be such a crybaby. My Cavs won. They are figuring things out. They beat your Raptors. You can't do anything about it. Serge Ibaka is a punk. Choking Marquise Chriss. I hope he gets a big long suspension for it. I'm glad he got ejected. My Cavs are going to be better next year. You better believe it. My Nets won as well, this year's NBA champs. My Coyotes didn't win though. Oh well. My Indians only tied yesterday. My Orioles or Diamondbacks didn't play.

March 12, 2019 @ 7:04 AM

WOW the Golden Girl who whines and complains EVERY single day calling someone else a crybaby when Andrew only wrote 100 % fact. Also,Choking Marquise Chriss. A lot of free tribute band shows this summer on Thursday nights in Unionville (Markham).
unionvillepresents.com

March 12, 2019 @ 9:59 AM

bsmntdwllr73

@H.o.E.
Great link, but how cheap and accessible is the public transit (if any, sorry. but completely uniformed
in this regard) to get out there and back?) Kinda operating on an even tighter budget than ever
from this point on... but definitely interested in at least 6 or 7 of those performances.

March 12, 2019 @ 10:04 AM

H.o.E.

I don't really know anything about the accessibility, but I think you would almost certainly have to use something else (probably York Region Transit) in addition to TTC to get there from Parkdale. Last year I took a GO Train in the afternoon to the Centennial station near the Markville mall and then walked for about 25 minutes along the sidewalks and park trails (easy to get lost!), then when the show was over I walked all the way to the Unionville GO train station. You can use Google Transit maps or
Triplinx.ca to try to figure out something.
Also, the seats get filled a very long time before the show starts, so unless you get there early you have to stand in the crowd way back on the sidewalk across the road.

March 12, 2019 @ 11:19 AM

bsmntdwllr73

Thanks for the info, but kinda sounds like a bit of logistical nightmare, and quite confident
that many of those acts will probably also turn up at more local outdoor venues. Even for free, not really willing to schlep out to the outskirts.

March 12, 2019 @ 11:29 AM

bsmntdwllr73

@H.o.E.
And I probably should have used the terms availability/frequency in lieu of accessibility, as the latter
is not a personal issue for me!

March 12, 2019 @ 11:32 AM

jj

H.o.E. - thanks for that. I love me some good music, and unionville is a nice drive up for me.

bsmntdwllr73 - yeah, transit wise it would definitely be a nightmare unfortunately. you have lots to see downtown in the summer, which would be easier for you to get to commute wise.

March 12, 2019 @ 11:43 AM

bsmntdwllr73

@jj
To a certain degree, yes, but that really is a nicely assembled concert series. The last
couple of years, I haven't been overly pleased with a lot of the free music that's been
available, And I know that beggars and such shouldn't be choosers, but I often find that
these tribute acts often offer stronger and more faithful renditions of old musical favourites
than what sometimes passes for the current incarnations of many popular acts!! Ultimately
it kinda sucks to be so disenfranchised and disconnected with regards to attending events
outside of one's rather limited comfort zone.

March 12, 2019 @ 11:52 AM

bsmntdwllr73

From the incredibly strange but true celebrity file: Actresses Lori Loughlin and Felicity Huffman
are amongst a group of parents who have been indicted for (allegedly) offering bribes (via
supposed charity donations) in order to get their children into elite Ivy League schools. Wowza!!

March 12, 2019 @ 11:54 AM

jj

bsmntdwllr73 - valid point, you should be able to travel freely and without hassle to see these guys perform. the good guys probably don't do many downtown shows due to venue costs, etc? :(

And I cannot believe this college scam, but it does not surprise me at all. That's really lame of them.

@TM

Regarding your tweet, how are you doing your podcasts differently than your first 400+ episodes? I'm intrigued. :)

March 12, 2019 @ 12:53 PM

bsmntdwllr73

@jj
The best opportunities to see many of the finest cover bands working today are at the numerous
street festivals taking place all throughout the city (four corners!!) over the summer/fall, but it
isn't always easy to keep track of all the great stuff on offer, especially for an Old Skool Luddite
such as myself! Plus, often over-crowded and although I'm not averse to going early to secure
prime seating within reason, not always pleasant to be sitting by one's self for hours and then
having to deal with the last-minute 'gate-crashers' stampeding in and demanding special treatment!!
I despise those folks, also applicable at the movies, where I always sit down in front, at least when
I go stag (without the Sweetie!!!).

March 12, 2019 @ 1:14 PM

H.o.E.

@bsmntdwllr73 -- I searched for the websites or social media of some of those tribute bands for any shows they might list inside Toronto. The only two I could see listed so far were:
Simply Queen at Taste Of Lawrence on Sat. July 6.
and
Elton Rohn, TBA Toronto, Thur. Aug. 29 -- maybe that CNE midway stage thing again?
Not one of the acts appearing in Unionville, but that Kiss tribute band that was at the Dundas Square poutine fest last year will be at the CNE midway and Taste of Kingsway.

Thanks for the update!! And yeah, I was checking out Destroyer's official website over the weekend
and was surprised to see that they are already booked for this year's A Taste of the Kingsway. Would
be nice if they played some more deep album cuts unlike the current on its-last-legs (?) 'TRUE' incarnation, but probably highly unlikely. As for Simply Queen, they are fantastic, and I hope that
they have their keyboardist back in tow so they can play some more of the latter day tracks they
had to omit the first time I saw them.

March 12, 2019 @ 4:53 PM

In other news, I just realized that the McDonalds where a 90 year-old man was accidentally
struck and killed by a pickup truck (Bathurst and Fisherville, south of Steeles) was the first
location I ever went to as a toddler when I lived in a nearby high-rise. Haven't been there in
close to five years, but I certainly know that area very well. Such a tragedy.

And I just saw some of the Morgan Rielly/Kyle Dubus press conference regarding that alleged
homophobic slur during last nights' Leafs game and all that I could think of was the following:
Hollywood better snap that Dubus fella up real quick, 'cause he'd make the perfect young
Clark Kent for the next inevitable Suoerman/Smallville reboot!!

Yes, Ibaka did choke Chriss. I was listening to the Cavs feed of the game and the radio play by play guys said that's what happened and I believe them. I get Tunein Live and so I ask my echo to play Cavs and it does that. I can't see the games, but I know what the Cavs' announcers said. Anyway, how about those Habs. Finally they win again and Carey Price won the most games as a goalie for the Habs. Great stuff. My Coyotes also won. I said it's Habs and Coyotes to the finals. Well, hopefully my Nets and Suns will win tonight. In baseball, nothing much went on except my Orioles lost. That was no good. They were winning big, but they blew it. My Diamondbacks got rained out and my Indians didn't play. Well, warm weather. That's good. Get rid of all the fricken snow.

Can hardly wait for the inevitable Oscar-bait Brexit film called "Fool Britannica" directed by
Danny Boyle and starring either Olivia Colman or Emma Thompson as that most handsome
Theresa May and Michael Sheen as the quite dashing Jeremy Corbyn! Probably gonna be a role
for Ewan McGregor as well, as he and Boyle resumed their working relationship with that
second, lesser Trainspotting flick a couple of years back. Exciting times to come!!

March 13, 2019 @ 9:25 AM

jj

Cheryl - we'll never know what was said to Ibaka, he got three games because he's fought before I think.

March 13, 2019 @ 11:36 AM

bsmntdwllr73

So it would strongly appear that other than Bill Brioux (and a retweeting 12:36), it really
would appear that collectively Canadians have very little interest in the currently airing
"Street Lega"l reboot, and frankly, I can't say that I really blame them. The original series just
might be my favourite Canadian drama ever (well, aside from The Littlest Hobo, I guess).
The update, however, is a bland pretender to the throne, retaining only the original's logo
and the diminished 'star power' of Cynthia Dale (still stunning, though!). It's funny, since
September I've had tremendous difficulty watching shows online at various TPL branches. And
yet CBC Gem is clearly desperate for viewers so no such difficulties occur when it comes
to watching their various shows on the 'Net. The glaring absence of original characters
Chuck and Leon is quite evident, although the latter will show up in at least two of the
four remaining 6 episodes, alongside former series regular Anthony Sherwood as Dillon
Beck. Probably too little too late, another example of why it is probably best if Canadian
TV producers don't blindly follow their American counterparts down Reboot/Rehash/Remake
Alley. What's next: 'fresh' attempts at such unmissed 'classics' like "Katts and Dog", "E.N.G.",
and "Traders"?!? "Being Erica", well, I would totally be down for a continuation of that far-too-
brief four season wonder, 'cause I truly loves me some Erin Karpluk. MMMMMM!!

I should have also noted above that this new incarnation of "Street Legal" also includes
a fair amount of saltier language than its earlier iteration, i.e., countless utterances
of "FUCK", "SHIT", and "ASSHOLE". Now I was born with the pottiest of mouths,
so it's not like I'm the easiest plebe/rube to offend, but I kinda felt a tad bit unsettled
the first time I heard Ms. Dale blurt out one of G. Carlin's infamous list of 7 verboten
words (but not ass ass or its variations)!!

I guess it's March break if you go into a mall at lunch and on your way to the food court you see a stunt dog show.

They also had two cats, but I did not see either of them get on its bad kitty-scooter and ride, like I see pictured on their website. Ultimutts.ca

Beatts

Just checking in to see what cake is the flavor on the month. Hope all is well in Toronto Mike land

March 13, 2019 @ 3:55 PM

andrew

I'm sure it won't be a Leaf flavor.
This game is BRUTAL as was the last. Chicago a team out of playoffs as of now & the LAFFS losing 5-0 & already pulled Freddie for Sparkie. Then they play 2 more lower teams - Phil. & Ott. & would be lucky to win 1 of them.
Turn out the lights the party is over.
GO CBJ GO as my sisters nephew plays on that team, Josh Anderson.

Such is life.... teams slump... we weren't escaping the second round this season anyway, and I haven't given up on the first round. Let's play the games and see what happens.

@andrew

I don't understand your frustration, the Leafs and Raptors are basically both locked into their playoff seeds already. The Leafs will play the Bruins again, the only thing that is up in the air is if they will have home ice or not and the Raptors will be the #2 seed in the East.

Save the energy for the playoffs.

@bsmntdwllr73 , I am also in the camp of do they really need to cuss that bad?
I watch the the first street legal series, and would be quite content not to hear Peter's spouse cursing.

Beatts - HI! How is the new job?

I personally think the Raptors should be smoking all the teams they play - seriously, losing to Cleveland? But maybe I expect too much of my boyfriends.

March 13, 2019 @ 10:00 PM

andrew

So what you're saying Mike Is Leafs gone in 2nd round?
If they play the Bruins it's over in 5 for Boston in 1st round AGAIN.
Babcock has to go & be bought out as coaching as if the 90's.

@andrew

I don't see the Leafs getting past the Lightning.

But I can see them getting past Boston.

Cheryl

My Nets and Suns both lost last night. That's no good. Oh well, my Cavs, Habs, and Coyotes will all win tonight. My Nets are in the playoffs though. There will be a party with a Nets cake and then there will be either a Habs or Coyotes cake. They're both going to the finals. I'm so happy my Cavs won on Monday. That was great. Well, my Orioles had a good comeback win yesterday as they were losing. My Diamondbacks lost. My Indians played split squad game. They won over the Brewers and lost to the Royals. I'm tired of split squad games. Why can't they play normal, no split squad junk. Oh well, what can you do.

Sure, Rob J left, and Beatts is down to one comment a week, but Cheryl's still here and therefore Open Mikes live!

@Mike
Yay! Is there some kind of official trophy for that? 'Cause it's kinda been a long stretch since I received
a special participation ribbon for coming in eighth(!) in a busy crowd of seven at the official Thistletown Group Home Games, Spring 1980 edition!! Heck, I was even beaten by Owen, an autistic kid whowas a total dead ringer from Mr. Dressup!! Or I'd simply settle for a posted photo of that apparentlydelicious lasagna that Palma Pasta has been gifting all TM'd guests with for months now! Prettymuch the closest I'll ever get to receiving one, unless you ever need a fourth civilian chair for that upcoming pop culture summit in the unfortunate event that Baldy67 is unavailable!!

March 14, 2019 @ 11:14 AM

bsmntdwllr73

Slight error above, my group home housemate Owen was actually a dead ringer for Casey from Mr.
Dressup, but a hell of a lot quieter!!!

@Mike and bsmntdwllr73... shouldn't Cheryl be the OMMVP???

ding-ding-ding; Dirtberg, Right Ahead!

When he was talking about parking, I heard John Moore use the word "dirtberg" to describe the formations at the side of streets. The media likes to do stories about about leaves changing colour in autumn, or the cherry blossoms later in spring. Why not the dirtberg season? This might have been the best year in recent memory in Toronto for dirtbergs. During the March break families of tourists could go on dirtberg sight-seeing tours.
Mommy, look! That one has dog poop in it!

Maybe for number of years of consecutive posting, but certainly not based on the breadth of
topics posted about as well as the entertainment/information on value ( duly noted that both these
things are clearly based on any readers' particular tastes and interests, but still... sports scores,
weather updates, Lastman boosterism, a coterie of character cameos, and the occasional hilarious snarky comments aside. C. can hardly compare with all the recurring 'magical ' goodness I so selflessly(!!) bring to the table. Let's face it, in an early age I would have long ago found constant employment as the village idiot and/or town crier, at least until I prematurely ended up in the stocks. Such a fate would certainly beat out my current less than stellar subsistence!!

Sorry again, I should have actually typed "in an earlier age" above.

They're only just now realizing that the intersection countdown clocks are misleading pedestrians and encouraging them to run across the road when the "Don't Walk" signal is being displayed?
citynews.ca
I've pointed this out at least twice here in past Open Mikes last year. Just change them to be like they are in Oshawa, with the clock showing how much time is left in the Walk signal.
