TGIF! Stay warm everyone!

Well, they say snow tomorrow. I hope not much because I have a morning appointment tomorrow. It was bad yesterday. Grocery Gateway came two hours late. That was no good that they came two hours late. They didn't even give me a credit for being late. Well, my Cavs won last night and my Coyotes won. That's great. My Habs and Nets as well as Suns will win tonight. My Indians lost, but they lost to my Diamondbacks. My Orioles only tied. I wish Mel Lastman was back to bring the army in to get rid of all this fricken snow.

March 1, 2019 @ 8:58 AM

Fun fact: If Cheryl brings Mel Lastman up one more time, pretty sure that either Beetlejuice or
Candyman are gonna show up on here and start stirrin' things up big time!!

A great start! Now please help TM fill out the rest of the lyrics and perhaps finally redeem what

Went to the Gala opening of Goalie - The Terry Sawchuk story earlier this week. Not a bad movie at all. Great to see one of my favourite Canadian actor's - Sean McCann in it.

I think the most overused word in modern day vocabulary is 'amazing'. Everyone says everything is amazing these days!

So I just came out of a very awkward meeting with my alleged social worker, whose organization
has provided me with much needed additional funds for the last number of years. Today I
finally (and very belatedly) received confirmation of this year's amount, and it was a rather
shocking decrease of between 15 and 17% per month, which I can ill-afford to lose, especially
with several of my key monthly expenses going up at the end of March. Gonna be a lot of Ramen
Noodles, week old bread, Burger King bargain menu and Four-4-One Pizza (is that even a
thing?) from here on out and not really looking forward to that at all. The way things have
been going the last 6 months or so, probably won't be too long now before I'm forced to
move down to one of those 'charming', ad hoc, not-so-hidden shanty towns covered in the February issue of Toronto Life!! Yet another in their often incongruous line of articles probably meant to make sure that their well-heeled core readership truly appreciates that well-earned silver spoon just a little bit more!!

Thanks for the kind thoughts, but might not have been the best choice of words on your
big-hearted-part, as I'm starting to really feel that proverbial noose getting tighter and tighter, at
least metaphorically speaking, for the moment. P.S., is it too soon to remark on the
irony of Chris Cornell writing and recording that Soundgarden track "Pretty Noose", considering how grim things turned out for CC in the end? Probably a good thing that I don't drink or use any mind-altering substances, 'cause I doubt even those two things could help me feel better at this point!!

Thanks to you as well!!

Another sad showbiz world death to report: Katherine Helmond of "Soap" and "Who's The Boss" fame

Tough week for the Liberals, glad JWR stuck to her convictions, as SNC Lavalin after all their other scandals of bribery (Mcgill Hospital, World Bank banning them for 10 years from bidding on projects), they should never have been considered for a DPA, (which was tucked into the tail end of a omnibus bill) it should be for first time offenders, who maybe had some rogue management one time.
Trudeau probably never thought he would get his boots this close to the manure pile, and China must be wondering whats this Rule of Law that isn't supposedly corruptible by government influence.
Oh well they now have a lap dog in Lametti as the Justice Minister, who will allow the DPA to happen. The Liberals aren't going to win this David and Goliath PR battle.

March 1, 2019 @ 9:34 PM

Well, my Nets and Suns lost again. My Habs won. That's great. Well, my Orioles and Diamondbacks lost, but my Indians won. It's going to snow 2 to 4 cm. Hope most of it comes when I'm back home. I hate winter and that is why we need Mel Lastman back. I wish he was still our Mayor. He could bring in the army.

March 2, 2019 @ 6:27 AM

If Honest George Smitherman was mayor we would not need the army anyway cause honest George would just make the snow go away.Honest George Smitherman is thebest mayor we never had anyway.Plus if it got hot in the summertime honest George would callin the army and they would wave fans on everyone to keep us cool anyway I know that would happen for sure.Allso i hate spring cause i don't like the smell of dog poop thawing out and smelling. If honest George was mayor he would have big cans of Glade on every street corner anyway.

March 2, 2019 @ 8:39 AM

There is also the smell of garbage and the insects to look forward to.
Last night at The Rockpile Ed the Sock mentioned the smell of Chinatown in summer. He also had some good stories and photos from his recent western Canada tour, in particular a place called Squamish.

March 2, 2019 @ 8:50 AM

Wonder what Snow thinks of all the snow we've had over the last couple of weeks, and whether
or not he's planning to sue Mother Nature for infringing on his name? Can snow even be trademarked, and what of all the hearty cokeheads who use that word as a term of endearment for
their 'true love'?!? P.S., He.s been dead for a little over 33 years now, but why don't they exhume
Nathan Phillips and install his remains as the next mayor of Toronto? Ghoulish, but if they were
at all sentient, well, they'd probably do a much better job than Lastman would at this point in
time. Noobody!!!

March 2, 2019 @ 9:22 AM

David Marsden kinda looks a little bit like latter-day Robbie Robertson in that photo you just posted to
Twitter in reference to the former's birthday. Twin Sons of different Mothers, perhaps? (Also
the name of a stellar duo album by Dan Fogelberg and Tim Weisberg form 1978!)

March 2, 2019 @ 9:25 AM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

Marden's age is somewhere between 69 and 89.

March 2, 2019 @ 9:47 AM

Pretty big gap between those two numbers, lol, but Mr. Marsden looks fantastic whatever his
current age might be!! But lest we forget, 69 can be a wonderful number, or so I've heard/read!!
And along those lurid lines, it always pays to remember ZZ Top's immortal "I Got the Six" from 1983's
"Eliminator" album, barely there single-entendre at its finest!!

March 2, 2019 @ 10:19 AM

Here is a real story Ed saw from the town. Apparently dogs there have problem with human feces.
Human feces laced with THC sickens Squamish dogs

March 2, 2019 @ 10:42 AM

Was Mr. Sock putting on a comedy show and is he even funny? And even more importantly, is
his other half a part of the equation? 'Cause that might kill the buzz quite quickly, despite
providing a nice visual thrill for fans of curvaceous ladies!!

March 2, 2019 @ 10:51 AM

It lasted more than an hour and a half, so it had its ups and downs, with some of the video clips and one or two of the jokes or stories sounding familiar, but I think most of the large crowd had fun. Liana K was there in the cohost role to sometimes give Ed someone to interact with (apparently he did the western Canada tour without her), so it was almost all Ed and none of her stuff about gaming, etc.

March 2, 2019 @ 11:07 AM

I guess there is little chance that she was decked out as Red Sonja or other similar cosplay gear?!?
I've never been to that club, but a cursory glance at their website was quite impressive with its
listings for Anvil, Jake E. Lee and that Crush Rush tribute all this month alone.

March 2, 2019 @ 11:15 AM

No overtly revealing costume. I think she said the dress she had on was something she got for some awards show many years ago and had ignored since then.
I've been there a small number of times over the years. It seems to be mostly the '80s rock/metal acts (Anvil, Helix, Killer Dwarfs, Dio Disciples, etc.) and I suppose tribute acts now. Even though it wasn't a music act there last night, I couldn't help but notice much of the audience being that aging biker type of crowd you like so much.

March 2, 2019 @ 11:39 AM

Yeah, totally my eternal peer group, they loathe me long time!!! P.S., not sure if you're familiar with
the stellar writing career of local hard rock/heavy metal scholar Martin Popoff, but as a longtime
reader of his stellar writing, I'm ashamed to admit that I only just discovered his Youtube series
"The Contrarians", where he and a buddy debate their favourite albums by various stalwarts
from that genre, and as the title implies, not always the most critically or commercially successful
ones. Well worth scoping out!

March 2, 2019 @ 11:47 AM

Can't blame Cdns for voting in Jr. After 10 yrs of the Harper Dictatorship, Cdns did want "Sunny Ways". This was just another marketing ploy by a political party, AKA "Make America Great Again', that worked to perfection.

But now the misconception is front & centre. Jr is a complete fraud. He is an actor reading his lines, playing PM. It is so clear. The trick never loses. Remodel the image, you get better results. Jr is deep in a pile of shit.

The best part of this controversy is when one of the MP's told him that SNC paid $30K for hookers for Ghadaffi's son. Jr rose up and said "we will defend Cdn workers......" ???? Now hookers are classified as workers???

The curtain is ready to close.

Did Adam Wylde really start a #TavaresDayTO hashtag just because John Tavares got booed for one game against his former team?

I didn't know my fellow Leafs fans were that sensitive.

They must have no idea how much venom former stars receive in other sports that they were so shaken up by a guy getting jeered for one game.

For as tough as they portray themselves and their sport, hockey guys and fans are very sensitive people.

March 2, 2019 @ 4:14 PM

I definitely recognize the name from articles and reading one of his books about 15-20 years ago. And I happened to see one of those YouTube things you mentioned a few weeks back with him unconvincingly attempting to argue that Mirrors was the best B.Ö.C. album. Though likely not the worst (most would give that dishonour to Club Ninja), with about half of the songs being forgettable there's almost no fans who call it the best. The band and unfamiliar producer assigned to work with them apparently disliked each other and the end product (btw, Ellen Foley of Night Court and Bat Out of Hell fame was somewhat awkwardly heard on two songs). When promo videos were later made for three of the songs, instead of the usual 1970s practice of using the studio versions for the sound to accompany the visual of them lip-syncing and miming, the sound was them playing the songs live (or at least live-ish versions that certainly were not the album tracks).

@jj, glad you see the politics as the new shiny pony it seems to have become. Money speaks volumes, just look at Doug Fords recent full court press on fund raising. I don't see the Liberal vote loss federally over this as a win for the Conservatives. I see these maybe moving to the Greens, and maybe some to the NDP. Jagmeet has a tough road ahead, given I think 13 NDP MP's are not returning for the fall election.

March 2, 2019 @ 5:34 PM

A question for the hive mind: A few friends and myself were talking about CITY-TV and it's past and when he started naming off past people there we hit a blank spot that I'm hoping someone here could fill it.

When it came to their "general assignment editors" I know it started with Glen Cole and then when he retired he was replace by someone else who was followed by Dwight Drummond and following by Kevin Frankish with Mark Dailey stepping in at time as well.

Does anyone know or recall the name of the person who replaced/followed Glen Cole? It was the one that was driving my friend and myself batty.

Can someone remind me if we booed Tracy McGrady upon his return? I don't remember that happening... and he was a budding star who wanted to go home. And yes, I admit "budding star" is different from "star".

If Auston leaves us after 9 years to play for the Coyotes, I don't think it would be nearly the reaction we saw in New York. Sure, some will boo, but others may actually applaud him. I think Hebsy's right... the over-the-top hate is a uniquely New York / Philly thing.

Chris Bosh, for example... left us as a free agent and got some boos, some cheers, when he returned. But not a whole lot of hate.

Now what Vince Carter did is completely different. He essentially quit on us and forced a terrible trade. That deserved all the boos we could muster.

March 2, 2019 @ 8:01 PM

When Vince Carter played earlier THIS year in TO he was cheered immensely & much deserved.

Other Fun Facts for a Sat.
Ron Hainsy has the best plus/minus in NHL as of today at +39.
Auston Matthews has best GPG (goals per game) in NHL as of today even though Ovie has 45 goals & has played all Wash, games.
Had more snow in the GTA in Feb. than normally for the complete winter & still more to come.
My Granddaughter had her 2nd BDay this week & her brother who's 4 baked her a cake (with Mom's help).

Vince was booed mercilessly here for years until this recent thawing. Now he's cheered, but it took some time.

March 2, 2019 @ 10:14 PM

Urooj Islam

@Toronto Mike

Yes, McGrady was booed heavily in his return and was booed no matter what team he came back with for several years throughout his career. I can't recall any time where Toronto fans were not booing him after he left for Orlando in the summer of 2000.

Also, Bosh was booed out of the building in his return. That Heat team from 2010 to 2014 is the most widely hated North American sports team arguably of this century.

The sheltered Toronto hockey media acting like this is not a normal occurrence across sports makes them look amateurish.

March 2, 2019 @ 10:44 PM

Well, my Habs lost. That's no good. They didn't have it and they fricken lost. My Coyotes won though. That's great. My Coyotes are hot. My Suns won as well, but my Cavs got clobbered and my Nets got clobbered. My Indians lost only 1 to 0. They couldn't get any runs. My Orioles and Diamondbacks won though. No, George Smitherman didn't become Mayor unfortunately. Now he isn't even in politics. I have no idea what he's doing now, but he was really a good guy.

Speaking of B.O.C.'s "Mirrors" album and their issues with the producer (Tom Werman), other bands
such as Twisted Sister and Cheap Trick (who both had their biggest success whilst under his production tutelage) have also long-bemoaned his mainstreaming of their collective former heavier
(read: not overly-commercial) output. "In Thee" is on that B.O.C. album and I love that particular track,
but my album favourites are "Spectres" and "Tyranny and Mutation". Fun fact about "Club Ninja": Lee Aaron also recorded Bob Halligan Jr.'s "Beat 'Em Up" on her '85 album "Call of the Wild."

March 4, 2019 @ 4:36 PM

How much longer will Conner McDavid play in Edmonton? Signs a great contract for 8 years & their team is worse than last year. Another season probably missing the playoffs.
Auston may follow suit in the next 3-4 years or after contract is done going back to the desert. Just a thought.
If it wasn't for Ted Lindsay promoting while playing the NHPLA these contracts may be not what they are now.
Have you ever heard any songs by Marillion in 80's, an awesome band?

March 4, 2019 @ 9:13 PM

My Nets and Suns both won last night. Goody. My Indians really got clobbered though 8 to 0. What's wrong with my Indians. My Orioles did win. My Diamondbacks ended in a tie. Cold again? Why won't winter quit? This is the worst one ever.

March 5, 2019 @ 6:54 AM

as a big fan of the Peter Gabriel Genesis days I always enjoyed Marillion as well as they seemed to be heavily influenced by them.

March 5, 2019 @ 7:52 AM

Yes, I'm very familiar with the music of Marillion, especially the earlier
period of their career in which the almighty Fish was their lead singer/
lyricist. In fact, I really love their 1987 album "Clutching At Straws",
and still listen to the tracks "Incommunicado" and "Warm Wet Circles"
fairly regularly.Fantastic musicianship, although I'm less intrigued by
the music recorded with their much longer-serving vocalist Steve Hogarth,
well, at least a good portion of the music recorded after "Holidays in Eden"
(1991). Fun fact: Fish sang a couple of tracks on a Tony Banks solo
album "Still" (1991): "Angel Face" and "Another Murder of a Day."Well-
worth seeking out on Youtube or other digital music services!

March 5, 2019 @ 1:41 PM

My Habs won. That's great. I slept through it. It was on so late. My Coyotes lost though. That's no good. My Indians won yesterday. That was a big 11 to 0 win. That's great. My Orioles and Diamondbacks both lost though. Well, my Cavs play my Nets tonight. My Nets have a chance of making the playoffs. No, not a chance. They will be there. My Cavs won't make it though. Maybe next year. More cold weather. I want spring. Well, we change the clocks this weekend. That's a sign. Well, I don't have to change any clocks now. They do it themselves. Thanks to my Google speaker and Amazon echo. They just do it.

March 6, 2019 @ 7:08 AM

In occasionally listening to M.Richards some mornings for a few minutes on that new Sauga960 station, all the ad breaks are almost entirely repetitive promos or charity things instead of paid commercials. It makes you wonder how long it can last. Other stations (along with all 'old media' --newspapers, magazines, TV stations) that been around forever are having to constantly cut back expenses to survive on decreasing revenue, so starting a completely new radio station today seems like a hopeless proposition.
BTW, Stalky Magee seems to have disappeared from the station back in January (he apparently tweeted something about health problems) and has been replaced in his time slot and any mention of him removed from the station's website.

I bought BOC's debut when no one knew about them here in Toronto b/c I read about them in American publications like Creem. Some of their lyrics were written by one of my fave rock writers R. Meltzer. He wrote the lyrics to "See's as Beautiful as a Foot on their debut and much later for their hit "Burnin."

I also saw them live on I think a triple bill with Mott The Hoople and an act I will not name as I did not like the mainstream direction they quickly took. I think that was at either Massey Hall or the O'Keeffe center.

Here's She's as Beautiful as a Foot:

March 6, 2019 @ 9:29 AM

@Javed Jafri
That's a great track, and pretty hard to believe that the same dude also wrote the lyrics for AOR staple
"Burnin' For You". And as for the increasingly semi-commercial (in places) direction their music ultimately transformed towards, back then bands could not subsist solely on ticket and T-shirt
money alone!! P.S., on a related note, I much prefer B.O.C.'s use of outside lyricists to those used
by the Grateful Dead (personal taste, subject matter and other such intangibles being considered in the musical equation).

March 6, 2019 @ 9:34 AM

My Indians did win again which is great and my Orioles won, but my Diamondbacks lost. Oh well, one of those teams will be winning the World Series. My Habs play another late one tonight. My Coyotes hopefully will win as well. Habs and Coyotes to the finals. Remember that.

Important news update: Recently Mel Lastman was asked about repeated pleas (on here) for him to return to municipal politics in order to call in the military for some much needed, long overdue snow
removal. His brief reply: "I AM GROOT!!", so pretty safe to say that he is otherwise wrapped up in
his intergalactic duties hanging out with Starlord, Rocket Raccoon, Gamora and Drax to be of much local help at this point, sadly.

And in other sorta political news, I just read a news release in one of the deepest, darkest, perhaps
most satiric corners of the Intrawebs stating that our embattled P.M. is about to release some kind

Bryan Adams-"Please Forgive Me"
Marshall Crenshaw-"I'm Sorry (But So Is Brenda Lee)"
Chicago-"Hard To Say I'm Sorry"
Justin Bieber-"Sorry"
The Corrs-"Forgiven Not Forgotten"
The Knickerbockers-"Lies"
Culture Club-"Mistake Number Three"
Johnny Mathis & Denise Williams-"Too Much Too Little Too Late"
Frozen Ghost-"End Of The Line"

...or perhaps not!!!)

Oh, and I left off that very lucky 13th track from the P.M.'s forthcoming music playlist:
R.E.M.-"So. Central Rain (I'm Sorry)", 'cause absolutely nothing (say it again!) helps to
start the heartfelt making of amends process like an early track from that (once) adorably bushy-haired Mikey Stipe and his three former musical brothers in arms!!
