Too cold to post!

February 1, 2019 @ 7:56 AM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

Tomorrow's high is -2 and I'm so excited!

As the guy who judges our weather based on days I can't bike or need to shorten my ride, this has been a truly brutal week.

February 1, 2019 @ 8:00 AM

Happy Friday all. I have to go for a sleep test tomorrow night. Will probably have to get one of those totally cool with the kids Darth Vader CPAP masks.

Chicks dig it.

February 1, 2019 @ 8:00 AM

I'm disappointed with Mike for hiding this open Mike on Cheryl this week.

February 1, 2019 @ 8:09 AM

Still off work.. and now caught a cold. Fingers crossed that the cold doesn't get worse. Man, my immune system is shot (or shit, both words work)....

@Mike, enjoy biking through the slush and water!

February 1, 2019 @ 8:10 AM

LieveFamke - oh man :( :( :( hope this cold goes away soon!

Beatts - good luck! maybe you won't need it??

February 1, 2019 @ 8:13 AM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

So what were the symptoms that might end up with you wearing a CPAP mask?

February 1, 2019 @ 8:14 AM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

Last week I biked 124 KM.

This week I've so far biked 3.67 KM.

The last time that happened (excluding weeks I was out of town) was the big ice storm a few Decembers ago.

February 1, 2019 @ 8:16 AM

My wife saying "You stop breathing multiple times through the night and it's freaking me out!" :)

To my reply, "Then stop putting your pillow over my face"

February 1, 2019 @ 8:27 AM

It's more to appease her and get checked out. I have restful sleeps. I can fall asleep very quickly, and be woken up multiple times through the night (by her going to the bathroom) and still fall right back asleep. That makes her jealous because she tosses and turns continually

February 1, 2019 @ 8:29 AM

I'm late, but the open Mike was hiding. I don't know why. Well, my Nets lost. That's no good. Never mind. They'll win the next one. I know they will because they're going to win it all. My Habs and Coyotes play tomorrow. So long without hockey. It's finally getting warmer. The ground hog thing is hogwash though. It's phony stuff. Yes, Mel Lastman was the best mayor we ever had.

February 1, 2019 @ 8:36 AM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

So you just snore stop breathing and it's driving her nuts. That's a good enough reason, and not surprising.

February 1, 2019 @ 8:41 AM

"I'm late, but the open Mike was hiding."

Told ya !

February 1, 2019 @ 8:52 AM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

I'm not even sure how I'd hide it if I wanted to hide it. I suppose I could back-date it to keep it off the home page.

February 1, 2019 @ 9:01 AM

" and not surprising."

I should take offense to that !

Actually I've had a lifestyle change for the past few months now. I was 293 lbs on October 1st. My blood glucose levels we're in the pre-diabetic range at 6.7, my high blood pressure was out of control, etc etc. My Dr read me the riot act and quite honestly, it scared the pants off of me...

So I completely changed my diet. Cut off processed foods. No sugar (other than natural in fruits), limit red meat to twice a week (with the intent to remove it completely, while reducing meat in general). I have a regular exercise routine with cardio and free weights.

This morning I weighed in at 255lbs (down 38) I'm 6'3" so I don't really "look" 255, which is nice. My goal is 225 so it's a work in progress, but I feel great. I went for follow up blood work this week and my glucose levels dropped significantly (almost out of the pre-diabetic range)

February 1, 2019 @ 9:04 AM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

The "and not surprising" was actually in regards to your wife's intolerance.

February 1, 2019 @ 9:08 AM

I still take offense !

lol ;)

February 1, 2019 @ 9:17 AM

Al The Royal Pain

We're playing in the city tomorrow night! It's in the North-East end, so I won't be expecting Mike to come out, but you're all invited. I would love to see some Toronto Mike listeners/readers there. If anyone does show up, make sure to introduce yourself, this won't be a name-tag event.

Here are the details:

February 1, 2019 @ 9:28 AM

Someone please explain the Adam Wylde fascination amongst the broadcast industry in this city. He's painstaking to listen to.

Wasn't the biggest fan of Tucker and Maura, but they were at least listenable. Wylde and TJ are really tough to stay with.

February 1, 2019 @ 9:35 AM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

I've never heard Adam Wylde on the radio, but I caught him on Breakfast Television a few times, and he seemed fine. Of course, the radio is a very different animal. I did ask Marc Weisblott for his review of the new 99.9 morning show yesterday. He also reviewed the new 102.1 morning show.

February 1, 2019 @ 9:48 AM

If anyone thinks extending the Yonge subway north into York Region is the highest public transit priority in the GTA, as I heard the mayor of Markham ridiculously trying to pretend this morning, then he and any other politician agreeing need to go to College Station at 5:15 pm on a weekday afternoon and try to get on a northbound subway.

February 1, 2019 @ 11:22 AM

H.o.E. - sooooo many people called him out for that.

February 1, 2019 @ 3:53 PM

Urooj Islam

Toronto Mike hides the Open Mike the way he hid the infamous recent podcast episode about you know who.

February 1, 2019 @ 4:06 PM

Happy Groundhog Eve everyone, hopefully he doesn't see his shadow as would be an early spring.

My girlfriends 27th birthday is next month so could you Cheryl please send your personal bakers email address to this site as you say they are versatile & can make many different kinds of cakes.

February 1, 2019 @ 7:41 PM

My personal baker has a very private email address. I'm not supposed to give it out. Not a big night for sports last night. Well, my Habs finally play at 2:00 this afternoon against the Devils. They will be like devils as my Habs will beat them. My Coyotes play tonight as well. Lots of basketball tonight. My Nets, Cavs, and Suns all play. My Nets are the champions this year. Believe it. Who cares about the ground hog. Yes, the Open Mike was hiding for some reason. It took me several tries to find it.

February 2, 2019 @ 7:24 AM

Probably most advisable to avoid any baker who has a top secret email account, as it is more than
likely that also specialize baking all kind of sexytime-shaped cakes for a very discerning crowd.
Always wanted to order a cake in the form of a phallus filled with canided cherries and bring it as a
most tasteful gift to a Bris. And right at the exact moment when the Mohel is in the midst of his
very 'specific' duties, I would simultaneously cut into the cake and shout "MAZEL TOV!" All of this
while softly humming that underrated Police tune "SYNCHRONICITY" to myself!! P.S., if I'm every fortunate enough to be invited to such a blessed event, what do ya think the odds are that DQ or Baskin-Robbins would be UP for making me an ice cream version of said (to date, sob!) hypothetical

February 2, 2019 @ 9:52 AM

Sorry, should obviously read as 'ever fortunate' above.

February 2, 2019 @ 9:53 AM

@ dwllr73 One must assume that a "baker" with a top secret Email addy must have deep ties to organized crime.
First thing I do when going to a new bakery to buy a Rye bread is I ask the clerk if the baker is willing to share his/her email addy. If NOT I just move on.
I am pretty sure the guy at the Car Wash I went to today would have been happy to share his mail with me. You just have to be careful. And George Smitherman was the most honest politishen ever,Anyway I know that for sure.

February 2, 2019 @ 10:44 AM

Apropos of nothing, many years back I saw George Smitherman and his then very-much-alive
husband enjoying a post Pride and Remembrance Day run nosh at the Mickey D's situated a little
south of Yonge and Wellesley. Now obviously I wasn't a participant in said sporting event as I'm
not the athletic type, but the atmosphere between them seemed a little dark on that particular
day. As I'm usually not one to start any blasphemous rumours (supposedly due to the almighty's alleged sense of humour!!) or anything so tawdry, I'll simply leave it at that, As for the sharing of illicit or shady email addresses, I'll try to be sure to remember to make that the first question I ask
the next time I find myself 'negotiating' with a pimp in some dank back alley, After all, always good
to have that pertinent contact info for when those dreaded STDs/STIs rear their ugly heads. Not that I would ever dare to engage such services!!! (Too cheap 'n' much too quick!!!).

February 2, 2019 @ 11:05 AM

So,"The Big Game " will be on Sunday evening for Appox 3 1/2 hours.
If you choose to watch on CTV
The first question is WHY ?
The second question is since they can't sell all the ad time How many times will they air a blurb for "The Launch" The current over/under number is 25 1/2 times
Have fun.

February 2, 2019 @ 2:32 PM

Urooj Islam

I am definitely watching on CBS, no CTV for me.

Also, just saw the newest "The Launch" ad which featured Sarah McLachlan. It was somehow more depressing than the infomercials she does about abused and mistreated animals.

February 2, 2019 @ 4:08 PM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

I love Sarah.

Man, did I ever dig this video.

February 2, 2019 @ 5:11 PM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

Having said that, I've never considered even for a second watching The Launch.

February 2, 2019 @ 5:12 PM

I'm listening to CBC's Big City Small World. It's such a great program. Happy Saturday!

I like me some good old school Sarah that is for sure.

February 2, 2019 @ 6:21 PM

I found a personal baker, contacted them & they are will to design & bake the cake I wan.
Name is Mrs. Crocker & brother is Mr. Hines if anyone is interested & can be found everywhere. I didn't know how easy this was. Cheryl you must look into this option for your next celebration party.

February 2, 2019 @ 6:54 PM

Rick C in Oakville

Saw Steven Page ex of the Bare Naked Ladies play with the Symphony New Brunswick tonight in Moncton.
He still has a great voice, and the crowd loved the BNL songs he played, and his new material doesn't depart too far from his old songs . He definitely left his imprint on the BNL songs, The Symphony as back up rounded out his performance.

February 2, 2019 @ 10:02 PM

Synchronicity I or Synchronicity II? Very different scenarios, depending on which Synchronicity is being softly hummed at the moment of truth.

February 2, 2019 @ 10:43 PM

Jason from Sudbury

I don't like football and really I could care less about the "big game" except that tomorrow I'm going to my buddy's house who's having a get together. I'm obviously just going for the social part but honestly I'm hoping the Rams win it. Besides...Tom Brady is at a disadvantage with all those rings. His hand must be getting pretty heavy by now. How is he supposed to throw the ball?

February 3, 2019 @ 1:56 AM

Rick C in Oakville

@Jason, I use to like watching the Super Bowl, but it doesn't catch my interest anymore, but would do it for the social aspect.

February 3, 2019 @ 6:41 AM

I don't care about the teams who are in the Superbowl. Next year my Browns, Ravens, or Cardinals will be there. There is another Habs game at 2:00 today though. Yes, my Habs blew it yesterday. That is no good that my Habs blew it and so did my Coyotes blow it. Basketball my Cavs, Nets, and Suns all lost. That's no good. Oh well, my personal baker is really really good though. He's going to make a Habs or Coyotes cake and a Nets cake. Two parties close together for the Stanley Cup and NBA championship.

February 3, 2019 @ 9:44 AM

Chuck 99

Hey Mike, regarding the 1980 Miracle On Ice Broadcast as per your discussion with Mark Hebscher on the Hebsy on Sports podcast.

It was, indeed, broadcast live in Canada by CTV, which held the broadcast rights to the 1980 Winter Games. The play-by-play announcer was Bernie Pascall and Ken Dryden was the color commentator.

It is firmly etched in my memory because I was in high school at the time, so I could easily watch a 5 p.m. hockey game. To this day, it is still one of the biggest upsets I have seen while watching a live sports broadcast. That Soviet Union team was the most powerful hockey team of that era.

February 3, 2019 @ 12:52 PM

@Sid V
I enjoy both of the Synchronicity title tracks but in the case of my previous comment, pretty
confident in belatedly stating that I was referring to number two, especially with that "humiliating
kick in the crotch" lyric. Except in my 7 day old case (Bris day!) it is my understanding that the Mohel
nearly dropped me during the procedure. One could also make a strong case that he subsequently left a little too much 'material' on the cutting room floor, so alas, neither my self body-image nor my
libido have ever fully recovered. Yes, I know, a hell of a lot of reaching on my part, but hearing
that particular killer track always reminds me of that ancient personal tragedy!

February 3, 2019 @ 1:54 PM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

@Chuck 99

Thanks for that!

I personally didn't watch in '80, but I know CTV / CBC always broadcast such events live, so I figured it had to be live here.

February 3, 2019 @ 2:14 PM

twins from bolton

A devastating explosion this morning in Caledon Village (10 minutes from my home in Bolton). Many people were evacuated & could be out of their homes for a while. Know many people who live in that area.
Town of Caledon is coming together for everyone affected with offers of families staying at their homes, grocery stores have donated so much, others asking how can they help.
Unfortunately 1 person died at the scene which is tragic & waiting to hear the name.
Caledon has stepped it up for all those involved & hopefully continues until all is back to somewhat normalcy.

February 3, 2019 @ 2:26 PM

Stupid Bowl, A terrible game as Rams only 57 yds. offense in 1st 1/2 & even worse is the half time show. WHAT THE HELL.
I'm going to bed than rather watch paint dry.

February 3, 2019 @ 8:20 PM

twins from bolton - I heard about that, sounds so scary. glad that your community is coming together during a time of need

February 3, 2019 @ 11:28 PM

Well, my Habs did win in overtime. That's great. See, they bounced back. Tonight I have my Nets, Suns, and Coyotes. Hopefully they will all win. I didn't listen to the Superbowl. I didn't miss much. I would listen if my Browns, Ravens, or Cardinals are in it. Next year it will happen.

February 4, 2019 @ 7:10 AM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

That was one boring football game, and an equally boring halftime show. I literally got up and did the dishes during the third quarter. Zzzzzzzzzz.

Of course, two weeks ago was one of the most exciting days of football I can remember, so maybe it was the contrast that was so jarring.

February 4, 2019 @ 8:01 AM

It was a very dull game, which I could have lived with, had the Pats lost. The commercials were less than noteworthy. I didn't know any of the songs from halftime. I did walk away with a few great prizes from our prize table lots of liquor (23rd year of our Super Bowl party)!

February 4, 2019 @ 9:34 AM

Even when it's been a close game with a higher score, as it has often been in recent years, the Super Bowl has always seemed a little anti-climatic to me because they make everyone wait for two weeks for the one last game, when we've gotten used to having multiple games for the preceding 20 weeks. I didn't think it was that bad. The outcome was still in doubt well into the fourth quarter, and I'm not sure why everyone thought that no-defense 54-51 Rams-KC game a few weeks ago was so great.
I don't get this thing of anyone paying attention to halftime. I would rather they just have a regular 12-minute halftime break than waste a half hour on a completely pointless alleged "entertainment" halftime show. Even if it was an act you liked, why would you want to see them do a 10 or 12 minute show? If you went to see a music act you liked do a long show that had a short intermission in the middle, would you want them to have some kind of short silly football or hockey game on the stage during it?
Not that I pay much attention to the commercials, but the thing that started out as a Bud Light ad and turned into one for Game Of Thrones made me laugh.
Ed The Sock will be at The Rockpile (usually the venue for 1980s rock and tribute bands) on March 1, as part of an Ontario tour that follows one in western Canada in late 2018. I guess the YouTube show wasn't attracting enough sponsors to make it worth continuing?

February 4, 2019 @ 11:59 AM

Urooj Islam

Poor Ed the Sock, one of the most outspoken and witty Canadian voices of my life is now stuck to co-opting his wife's lame causes and nodding silently.

Even socks have to get married, I guess.

February 4, 2019 @ 12:19 PM

Kids will be out biking since the weather is so nice.
When do you bike with your kids in winter?

February 4, 2019 @ 12:46 PM

After reading this ("worst best picture frontrunner in history"), I don't think I'll bother watching that Queen movie even if/when I can see it for nothing.

February 4, 2019 @ 12:54 PM

Urooj Islam

Only during the Super Bowl commercials for it did I realize that Captain Marvel is basically a female version of Green Lantern. They are even both fighter pilots!

Man, sometimes Marvel and DC don't even try to differentiate their superhero equivalent from that of their rival.

February 4, 2019 @ 1:04 PM

@Urooj Islam,

Being mildly invested in some of Liana K's interests ... I cringe hard. Her blaming feminists in the video game scene for attracting untoward attention ... just fucking brutal.

February 4, 2019 @ 8:37 PM

Well, sports was not good last night. Well, my Suns lost again. That's no good at all. My Nets lost. Never mind. They lost to a good first place team who will stay ahead of the Raptors the rest of the season, but my Nets are going to win it all in the end, so never mind that. Nets cake indeed. My personal baker has it all planned out. Coyotes lost again. They were leading, but they fricken blew it. Well, my Habs play tonight so count on another win for them. My Coyotes play tonight as well. Also my Cavs play tonight. Are my Cavs going to win or not? Let's hope so, but this season is going down the tubes. Anyway, so we still have my hockey and basketball parties.

February 5, 2019 @ 6:49 AM

Oscar prediction: Green Book wins.

February 5, 2019 @ 8:31 AM

Look at Mike changing fonts on here running amok.

February 5, 2019 @ 9:26 AM

Well, how about those Habs. Yes, another win because they're great, that's why. Coyotes lost another one. Come on Coyotes. You're going to be in the finals so I need you to win. Cavs lost again. That's no good at all. They're losing most of the time now. Why can't they win. Well, my Nets will win tonight and hopefully my Suns will win.

February 6, 2019 @ 7:16 AM

Cheryl I notice there was no update on the Raptors game last night? I didn't get to watch and my google machine is broke today for some reason (Thanks Trudeau!). Did you catch the score by chance? Thanks in advance.

February 6, 2019 @ 9:05 AM

I haven't been able to post for the last several days due to those pesky TPL
technical gremlins, so please kindly excuse the less-than-timely content of
this post!

#1. I don't know about anyone else, but purely based on that neat Adam Levine
15 second guitar solo during Marooned Five's horrific Stuporbore (trademark pending!)
performance, I humbly think that the world was belatedly introduced to the next
EVH!! Hmm, I wonder how those other two far more technically-proficient guitarists
in his back-up squad felt about that kind o'showboating? P.S., when was the last time
an M5 track even featured a discernible guitar line or any real instrumentation, for that

#2. My only previous exposure to Travis Scott came from a recent dull Rolling Stone
cover story. Hey, who out there remembers those days when RS was actually a great
magazine? Yeah, I sure do miss that halcyon era of Jonas Brothers and American
Idol cover features/ Moreover, his other claim to fame COMES (pun most certainly
intended!) from knocking up the younger and hotter of the two Jenner sisters.
Sadly, as the result of a tragic childhood toilet seat maiming incident at the tender
age of three, I was rendered sterile. But I'm willing to bet (and I'm not even a gambler)
that even a lame mule(!) such as myself could have also completed that less-than-
Herculean task!! Look, those older Kardashian sisters are pretty fertile, after all.
Then again, pretty sure (for an obvious assortment of reasons) that I'm nowhere
near her type....

#3. Nice to see Big Boi and Isaac Hayes (R.I.P.), I mean Sleepy Brown, for all of, like,
half a verse and a brief chorus run-through, anyway.Pretty good odds that Mr 3000
was off somewhere way cool(er) still trying to perfect that Jimi Hendrix impersonation!!

#4.Although I'm unabashedly 100% hetero (not that anyone is interested),
not embarrassed to admit that I needed an immediate cold shower (the only
kind available in my building, LOL!) after A.L. doffed his top near the end of
his performance. Somebody cast this fella in Magic Mike Live or the nearest
available Chippendales franchise, STAT!! Not a fan at all of his immense body
art collection, and as a half-Jewish individual, he might consider having them
eventually removed. Might be a little difficult for his loved ones to secure
future burial in an appropriate cemetery. Although there is also a very good
chance that such rules have already been changed due to current wonky tenor
of the times. TRADITION!! (Loves me some "Fiddler on the Roof"!!)

February 6, 2019 @ 2:20 PM

My thoughts some may agree others may not.

Global warming is a true phenomenon. -30 last week & + 5 on weekend. Snow, freezing rain & sun with temp. changes. Probably will snow in June.
Matthews contract is a win win for Matthews but especially for Marner. Dubus has a job to get all contracts signed. So long Gardiner, Zaitzev, Nylander or Kapenan.
Leafs playing worst team is the league now & losing 2-1 at home.
When I went to school 60's-mid 70;s we NEVER EVER had a snow day as I would walk their everyday.
Kids today have it too EZ today, a shame. When U R off school get outside & not play or read your tech crap.
My neighbors son off school today went door to door asking if to shovel their D/Ways & most said yes. He only wanted $5 & most gave him 2X or more.

February 6, 2019 @ 9:36 PM

Raptors did win last game. I'm surprised you didn't get it. Oh well, my Nets won last night. I told you they would. They will surprise a lot of people in the playoffs. My Suns lost though. That was no good. This weather is so weird. I had an appointment yesterday so I had to go out. Boy, it's so slushy and everything. I hate winter. Well, my Habs play tonight and my Coyotes play tonight and they will both win. That would be great.

February 7, 2019 @ 7:07 AM

Thank you for the Raptors score update Cheryl.

I can't understand these google machines much anymore. It rarely works for me. I'm going to call it Canada Post from now on due to it's laziness.

What's your favorite flavor of cake ? I like Chocolate.

February 7, 2019 @ 9:06 AM

I like Devil's Food cake, especially when it is served up by Alice Cooper! (Again, not that anyone was
actually asking!!). Chocolate Cake and Cherry Pie (the musical versions, natch, will also nicely suffice in a pinch.) Gee, ya gotta love all those food metaphor songs, dont'cha?!?)I probably would've been better off if I hadn't been born with a sweet tooth!!

February 7, 2019 @ 9:51 AM

Oh baby! On the morning after calling his last Leafs game, "Bob Cole" was at Sauga960 talking to David Bastl.

February 7, 2019 @ 1:55 PM

I wonder who the first act will be at the new 5000-seat theatre at Fallsview? It should probably be announced soon if the plan is to have it open by late June or early July.
The article says it will "replace" the present smaller venue. I hope they can keep both going. Even though there's another 1000-seat venue just a short walk down the road at the Convention Centre, I like the present Fallsview one much better -- actually 1500 seats according anything I've read, but it's configured so well that it feels smaller to me.

February 7, 2019 @ 2:05 PM

The new theatre at Fallsview is a good news/bad news scenario. It will bring in bigger acts, but there is the risk that acts currently playing venues like the Meridian Centre in St. Catharines will opt for the casino instead. Entertainment venues have a difficult time competing, since casinos use entertainment as a loss leader and can pay much more for an act than a stand-alone venue.

I hope the new theatre does some all-ages shows, similar to Caesar's in Windsor. Being physically separate from the casino itself should make this more feasible. Maybe the hottest rock band in Canada, The Arkells, can open it up.

February 7, 2019 @ 4:52 PM

I looked at Pollstar to see who is on tour then, and Bryan Adams is in Montreal and Toronto in the first few days of July, so that would seem like one possibility for the type of act they would probably want. YouTube

February 7, 2019 @ 7:10 PM

correction to earlier post -- apparently it was Bob Cole's last Leaf home game.
