Well, I am not first. Oh well. My Suns lost again. Will they ever win again? Well, big basketball night with my Nets, Cavs, and Suns all playing. Well, Nets are going to be the champions. First Saturday after they win it, there will be a party with a Nets cake. You're welcome to come. No smoking is allowed though. I'm sick of all this cold winter stuff. Winter is long this year for sure.

January 25, 2019 @ 7:56 AM

We're all coming.

We're all smoking (I'll take up the habit)

No one is wearing pants.

This will be the imaginary party of the century.

For the past several years, I've been judging the harshness of our winters by whether I'm able to get out and bike. Shorter rides tell me it's really cold and/or icy, no rides tell me it's -20 or colder, or there's an active snow storm.

Although we had a tough stretch in the last week, this winter has been the best one in a while.

@Mike, thanks for the shout out!

Looking forward to the smoking pant-less party!

If you haven't done so already, it would really be cool if you could arrange to interview Darryl Dahmer who's just retired from CFTR. I bet he's got a lot of interesting stories to tell about his 45 years of traffic reporting from high in the sky.

@Rick C in Oakville
Actually, my Traci Lords collection is largely paper-based, but somewhere in my storage there is
a VHS tape with a bunch of her finest work compiled for me by a trusted comrade back in the day.
(For anyone confused by the seemingly arbitrariness of this comment, it relates back to a couple
of comments I posted yesterday regarding a recent small flooding of my underwhelming Parkdalian
bachelor pad.) And no worries, but Fievel (my trusty mousemate) is still apparently among the living
as well. Plus, I'm starting to believe that it might also be time to start constructing some kind of personal ark device (built for two!) in the unfortunate event that a more Biblical water-based event should occur in the not-too-distant future!

Here are a few more unsolicited Friday morning opinions:

What the hell is the deal with that cackling OLG commercial spokeswoman in their newest ad
featuring that young red-headed female with the nose ring? In my one channel universe I see
that ad at least 15 times during an average night of non-discerning TV viewing and even if I were
to mute it, the damage has already been done. If I were to ever unwisely be recruited as some kind
of Manchurian Candidate assassin, well, this dreadful ad would best serve as the secret trigger
indicating that it is indeed go time for killing!! P.S., my hitman career would be non-starter as I
would undoubtedly (and accidentally) take myself out first!!!

And why exactly is Now Magazine still being published as a physical product? It's current
page count is usually under 36 pages and ya probably gotta chalk it up to the cancellation
of those 'informative' sex ads sometime last year. At this point it is basically as thick as my
beloved one-ply Dollarama brand toilet paper but not nearly as useful. I only really read
Now for their music and film coverage, but the former has become even more willfully
obscure than it was during the halcyon heydays of sunny Time Perlich and precious Kim
Hughes! However, Norman Wilner and Radheyan S. are still doing fine work with their
movie reviews and other assorted articles.

P.S., three weeks ago Now published their annual issue combatting body shame and its dashing
cover model was a fella who really made me feel like a certified hunk by comparison. Sure, the
following comment will run quite contrarian to the worthy aim of said article, but one made-up
word immediately came to mind when I read his story and saw his uncropped picture inside
the issue: MICROWANG!!! (Dang, is it too late to change my Toronto Mike'd handle?!?)

January 25, 2019 @ 10:50 AM

Alan Cross is apparently employed as "Media Mouthpiece" for that classic rock music festival at Edenvale Airport that I mentioned here a few days ago.

It still sounds like standing around in a field for three days to me. I don't know if they'll get the crowd they're hoping for, but I don't get the appeal of these things, unless maybe you're an RV owner. You pay a big price to see probably the two or three acts that actually interest you do a purposefully shorter show than usual, along with a lot of other acts you don't care about, out in the middle of nowhwere. I'd rather just go see them do their own full show.

I fear Now maybe in in its final months as a dead tree newspaper.

On that note, here's a great Twitter thread about the physical newspaper's death spiral:

For those who aren’t quite sure why these media layoffs keep happening, or think “it’s the internet!” or “people don’t pay to subscribe,” there’s a lot more going on. Though that is part of that. Here’s a cliffs notes version - not exhaustive but it hits the highlights:

Very interesting Twitter thread and keen observations from that gentlemen. Now has seemingly
been in its death throes for quite a few years now. Always enjoyed Eye Weekly/The Grid a hell of
a lot more, especially from its earliest years featuring 12:36's innumerable great contributions. Plus, in a world in which the Village Voice is no longer turning out fresh content even for the 'net, can't see a future where Now could ever remotely succeed under similar circumstances.

Aside from Cheap Trick (even without the fine percussive prowess of Bun E. Carlos), this so-called
Roxodus Festival is nothing to write home about. Friggin' Nickelback? UGH!! Okay, so maybe P,
Frampton and Saga (didn't they retire?!?) are still worth seeing, but what's the deal with Skynyrd?
How many heart attacks/transplants can Gary Rossington endure before he finally meets up with
the rest of the original line-up in the great beyond? This line-up could definitely be shored-up
with the likes of Blue Oyster Cult, Foghat and Blackfoot. It would certainly give the geriatric biker
brigade more of a reason to pony up and attend. Oh, yeah, speaking of old fogies,it would certainly be most advisable for the organizers to set-up a special medical tent to provide on-site prostrate exams, pap smears and colonoscopies. given that the age of the average attendee will presumably be north of 55. Maybe even through in a complimentary self-mamogramming station for those chesty GILFS accompanying their hot-headed, weekend warrior Harley-riding hubbies?

There's something really weird about all these documentaries coming out at around the same time of an event that is barely even 2 years old.

As Bob McCown would say, "A Spock-ian eyebrow has to be raised". It feels like it was an intentional trainwreck/scam just so it could be exploited like this.

Oddly nobody has commented about NDP Ontario leader Angry Horwath. It has been over 1 month now and she has been werry werry werry quiet !! From a person that craves more attention than Cheryl Traub I find this astonishing. From somebody who whines and complains about everything and anything and sticks her nose often where it does not belong NOTHING,ZERO ZILTZ .
Can only think of two possible reasons. She has finally realized that by the time Ontario Voters get to vote again she has no chance on earth to still be leading the Ontario NDP party. OR she has been quietly told by the suits in the Ontario NDP party that she is toast as leader of the party and to keep her mouth shut. Pick either choice and you will not be wrong.Oh and Angry..DO let the door slam you on the way out.

6 years is nothing, and he's got tons of money stashed away and is likely set for life. Totally worth it.

Well, now winter is brutal. We're going to have snow on Tuesday. Actually it will start Monday night and go into Tuesday. Well, no smoking is allowed in my place. The building does not allow it. You can't come to my Nets party if you smoke. My building is now a smoke free building. No smoking, not even on the balcony. My Nets won last night. Yes, another Nets win. See they'll be there in the finals. My Cavs and Suns both lost yes again. Now nothing in sports is on tonight. Oh well. At least my Cavs and Suns can't lose tonight.

January 26, 2019 @ 7:18 AM

But will farting be allowed? If not, then might be a deal-breaker. Probably best not to serve anything too spicy. However, if liberal wind-breaking is allowed, well, perhaps it would be most considerate of our multi-team loving hostess to provide some sort of incendiary device so that we can lesiurely light them up as we let 'em rip?!? It feels like the seasons are getting pushed later and later. We were wearing shorts until the end of September, we only had our first major snowfall in Southern Ontario a week ago. From what I recall we barely had a spring last year, it went from winter to summer.

January 26, 2019 @ 2:20 PM

Dr. Seymour Light

@Neil Clarke Warren - Not a chance Ms. Horvath leads the Ontario NDP into the next election. If the Federal Liberal seat of Spadina- Fort York is lost this fall, look for Adam Vaughan to take over the Ontario NDP Party, and go head to head with Premier Ford in the next Provincial election.

January 26, 2019 @ 3:32 PM

Chuck 99

@Neil Clarke Warren - I agree that there is no upside for Andrea Horwath to remain as provincial NDP leader. The party became the official opposition by default due to the implosion of the Liberal party under the terrible leadership of Kathleen Wynne. Once the Liberals settle on a new leader, the NDP will revert to its 3rd place standing.

In fact, judging by the uninspiring leadership of federal NDP leader Jagmeet Singh, I would not be surprised in my lifetime to see the Green Party supplant the NDP as the number three party in Canada. It has already happened in New Brunswick and might happen in Prince Edward Island after the next provincial election.

If Cheryl can hate Christmas, can I hate Groundhog Day? Not that it ever did have any real, non-stupid purpose, but even the phony original alleged explanation of a groundhog emerging from its burrow (as in a wild animal) to assess conditions has nothing to do with idiots in top hats on a stage carrying around and holding up some groundhog they keep in a cage the rest of the year. Can we start a campaign urging all media to ignore Groundhog Day? Or failing that, at least completely ignore any and all of the idiots in top hats who think they're doing something worth causing people to pay attention to them? If someone knows where a burrow for an actual wild groundhog is located, and wanted to waste their time setting up a camera there for a few hours on the morning of February 2nd, then that might be acceptable.

Today is Bell Lets Talk Day & it means a lot to me personally. Mental Health is not a weakness - IT IS A DISEASE, SICKNESS & more people open up about it every day.
I've lost 3 friends in last 20 years due to suicide & 1 was 1 of my best friends & never saw any indications of a problem.
My son spent 2-3 days in Psychiatric ward at a hospital a few years ago after sending a mssg. to his best friend that life doesn't exist anymore for him & fortunately the friend texted my wife who took him to the hospital right away & told him either hospital or calling 911.
Just over a week ago a person I hired in my department 18 years ago took their own life with depression as this person was married, a great job, a large house & farm outside GTA & everyone thought life for this person was heaven. You never know what is in a persons mind thought. Outside they are jovial & happy & inside they are suffering.
Bell Lets Talk Day - Just do it.
Thanks.

Anonymous - spot on. I am glad your son is doing better, I am so sorry about your co-worker and best friend.

Rick C in Oakville

@jj, too bad you are not in Oakville, I have a guy for tires, usually used but always a decent price.
Recommend getting them on rims, when switching tires , less chance of damaging tires/rims when switching over is reduced. I swap over all my families tires and doing it yourself takes maybe 30 minutes. Also with 2 wheel drive cars you don't really need 4 snow tires, just the drive wheels need snows. The tire industry has done a good job of telling people they need 4 snow tires, maybe for all wheel drive, but 2 wheel, it is a waste of money.

For those who understand, no explanation is necessary & for those who don't understand, no explanation will suffice.

Rick C in Oakville - I will look into the second set of rims probably in the summer, as it is I have to spend hundreds on the tires. There is a used guy in Pickering now that you mention it, that someone said is pretty decent. I didn't realize you only needed two? There is so much information and misinformation, it makes my head spin haha.

January 31, 2019 @ 9:04 AM

Jason from Sudbury

Didn't know snow tires were mandatory in Quebec. I had a friend tell me the other day that there's no difference between winter tires and all seasons which is bullshit. I suppose its a matter of preference too though. Some people say they're good drivers and know their cars and just stick to all seasons. I say if you can afford it you should just invest in snow tires...even if you're a good driver and know your vehicle. Whether they should be mandatory or not I'm still on the fense about that one. I would say in rural areas or places where winters are harsh yes. Southern Ontario...not so sure. We get the worst of it in the north. I always laugh when southern Ontarians bitch, complain, get stressed out about the snow because you guys don't get it nearly as bad as we do. The further north you go the worst it gets. So yes there are people who are worst off than we are in Sudbury.

I love the how to talk to your kids about marijuana ads from the government as if marijuana was just invented last week.

But, I feel bad for the kids and parents who have to have that conversation. Both have to pretend they don't know as much as they do. I've still never been to a place in my life where marijuana was easier to get than high school so the kids have to pretend they aren't familiar with it or haven't already smoked and the parents have to pretend that they didn't smoke like crazy growing up in the 1970s and 1980s.

January 31, 2019 @ 2:17 PM

jj

Jason from Sudbury - as an immigrant, I will say I didn't get to choose to come here. I'm glad my parents didn't end up further north, or in Ottawa with worse amounts of snow. Snow is just an annoyance to me, and throws a wrench in all my plans, and I feel like most people feel that way if they're complaining. I'll be getting my winter tires, for safety! Winter is for people who love winter activities, otherwise I am good staying inside. If I could afford to live anywhere else, I definitely would not live here for longer than the OHIP needed time.
