Okay. Goody. I'm first. Well, remember that in a week, if you don't want me to be umpteenth, then you should post the open Mike on Thursday night or before 7:30 on Friday. Gosh, I hope there won't be a snow storm on Friday or anything like that. Who knows though. Anyway, so my Habs lost last night again. That's no good, so the Blues couldn't sing the Blues. My Coyotes won though. That's great. At least one team won. Hopefully my Cavs and Nets win tonight. They have to.

It's in my calendar to go-live with next week's Open Mike on Thursday night.

A while ago a chap named Morgan called me to talk about podcasting. He did tell me he was recording it for his notes, but said it wasn't going to be shared in public. So I chatted with him as if it were a one-on-one private convo.

Yesterday he put it on YouTube, which is fine, because it means I can share it here:

January 11, 2019 @ 8:24 AM

jj

When Morgan decided to put it on YouTube, he called and asked you first right?

TGIF everyone!! Hope Rob J gets free fries tomorrow :)

Just seen a weather forecast. I see downtown Toronto is supposed to get 40cm of snow next Friday morning starting at 3 AM

January 11, 2019 @ 1:20 PM

Looks like Jays have traded Russell Martin to LA Dodgers for 2 prospects & will retain $16-18MM of his 2019 salary. So we're paying teams to take players off our hands? Tulo & now Martin. Can see ticket $ increasing substantially next year to pay this with Tulo $34MM over 2 years & Martin $16-18 this year. Can Vladdy catch?

January 11, 2019 @ 2:49 PM

Rob J

@jj
Exactly! Hope I remember to check how they did, but I have faith.

January 11, 2019 @ 3:40 PM

Rob J - don't you mean how WE do? hahaha

Sigh, yes of course, haha.

Rebuilding is not supposed to be pretty.

Respect to the Blue Jays for getting Tulowitzki/Martin off the roster to free up time for younger players and eating over $50 million to do it.

Tough to question their commitment to the rebuild after this.

January 11, 2019 @ 3:52 PM

Wasn't Bob Cole supposed to retire in December? He called the Habs game on HNIC last week. So was there a change of plans? Is he not retiring now?

@Jason from Sudbury

Scott Moore had Bob Cole retiring in December, but after Scott left Rogers they announced he'd get more games and call the final game of the regular season between the Leafs and Habs.

January 11, 2019 @ 8:27 PM

Cheryl Traub

Okay. So it's on your calendar. That's good. Anyway, who says we will get 40 cm of snow starting at 3:00 a.m. on Friday. Honestly I don't think I can change this thing at all. It's going to be fun trying to get somewhere with all that fricken snow on the ground. Anyway, basketball sucked last night big time. My Nets lost and my Cavs lost again. This sucks. My Cavs haven't won since my birthday. It's really really terrible. My Habs better win tonight. They have to. Habs and Coyotes to the finals. I don't want 40 cm of snow on Friday.

January 12, 2019 @ 7:31 AM

jj

Rob J - we only made 11 3's, sorry! But a good W all the same ;)

January 12, 2019 @ 10:31 AM

Cheryl Traub

Well, Habs won and a shutout. That's wonderful and beautiful. My Suns also won. My Suns are winning more than my Cavs. Anyway, I don't want 40 cm of snow on Friday. It's not going to be fun if that happens. Anyway, so it better not. Let it happen on Friday night into Saturday. I won't care then. I hate snow. It's hard to get around in the white garbage. Well, my Cavs better find a way to win some time soon. Boy, this is a long season.

January 13, 2019 @ 7:20 AM

Hey You

You Knuckleheads concerned about your sports team winning or losing is nothing compared to the crap that is happening in this country with the just recent passed law to police powers & drunk driving.

Did you hear about the 70 yr old guy who was just returning some empties and was later followed and pulled over and given a breathalyser test. The cop said to guy, you were returning alot of empties. They guy was returning 3 cases & 10 wine bottles which had accumulated over the Xmas holidays.

& now we are hearing that the police can come to your house and administer a test even hours after you have been home, if they are given some tip.

Trudeau is a clown dressed up as PM. Rights to child killers, rights to terrorists, rights to illegals, etc. etc.

Police State? ya, for sure.

PS oh yeah, be careful of Alexa & Siri, they can hear what goes on in your own home.

January 13, 2019 @ 2:04 PM

Neil Clarke Warren

@ You....I hear ya...BUT have you been to a Beer Store Lately ?? The service is so TERRIBLE I don't even go to stand and wait in the empties line unless I have at least 3 Man size boxes and 6 wine bottles.
The service is disgusting... Just ask Toronto Mike..He collects empties every weekday morning with his red wagon.

January 13, 2019 @ 2:42 PM

jj

Hey You - I can be enlightened about multiple topics allllll at the same time, ain't life grand? Please don't call people here names, simply because we are engaging in light hearted banter. And I would engage in conversation with you, but you started off calling us knuckleheads, so I am good. And I am sure our premier actually wants people to be over policed anyway??? So his friends can get jobs and stuff.

January 13, 2019 @ 7:03 PM

Urooj Islam

It's great to see old, white dudes being hassled by the police the same way they've been doing it to young minorities for years.

Finally, true equality!

January 13, 2019 @ 8:33 PM

Cheryl Traub

You're right, Trudeau is a clown. He let the postal strike drag on and on which is not good at all. Anyway, my Cavs finally won a game. That's great that they did. Well, Habs at Bruins tonight. It may be close, but Habs come on top and win. Yes, they will. My Nets also play tonight against the Celtics. Oh, my Coyotes lost last night. That's no good at all that they lost. Well, they're not predicting snow on Friday, at least not in the morning. Gosh, it better not snow. I can't change this thing. I don't think there is any way I can change it.

January 14, 2019 @ 7:24 AM

20 years ago today Mel called in the army when over 100cm of snow fell in 2-3 days.
Toronto was the brunt of worldwide jokes after this happened.

January 14, 2019 @ 10:10 AM

H.o.E.

Is this a "police state" or is it "soft on crime"? The angry rubes can't make up their minds -- or more likely just mindlessly repeat their trope of the day to each other.

January 14, 2019 @ 10:10 AM

H.o.E.

@dale -- I mentioned that here a year ago.

I don't think it was worldwide, just the 'proud-to-be-yokel' types in Canada or "all the Mullets out in Mulletville" as one post called them, who found the thought of ambulances in Toronto being blocked to be amusing.

dale - I went to school that first day, LOL. I didn't wanna stay at home. Miraculously, the school was open. They sent me back home, and my mom was like why did you even go? I was 11! That's all I ever remember about it to be honest.

Urooj Islam - the irony.

January 14, 2019 @ 10:28 AM

Urooj Islam

@jj

I don't think the words "school closure" were in the TDSB's vocabulary. I don't know if they didn't want to pay the teachers to stay home or what, but they would NEVER officially close schools. It didn't matter if you literally could not open your front door, walk on sidewalks or your parents' car could barely gain traction on the snowed in or iced over roads, schools were still open.

The four horseman of the apocalypse could be on your front lawn and the TDSB would still keep schools open.

January 14, 2019 @ 4:32 PM

On that day in 1999 our kids school was closed in Toronto. I had to take the day off work as wife had left before noticed schools were closed. She went by TTC & took 2 1/2 hrs usually 1 hr. & when she got there her boss said go home & don't come back tomorrow as U will be paid for today showing up.
My co. was closed next day also so watched videos & TV all day.
A great day of bonding with all.

I feel like in the 80s I might have had a snow day once or twice (born in 82 fwiw), but I don't remember it ever happening in the 90s, even after "the big one".

Leafs are falling like the middle of autumn. Personally sick & tired of hearing Babs saying the same thing after every loss "we have to get better both defensively & offensively & get back to work tomorrow in practice". Babs is coaching as if late 90's, early 2000's when the game was different.
Slip Slidin' away in the standings big time last 2-3 weeks. Worst move was letting Roman Polak go as only physical def. Leafs had last year.
They play the same way every game, every night & now with season almost 1.2 over other teams realize & can adapt to the Leafs play & yet the Leafs don't change 1 iota.
Will be a long second 1/2 of the season if this crap keeps up. TBay on Thurs., good luck with that.

January 14, 2019 @ 11:25 PM

jj

Urooj Islam - I know, TDSB and TCDSB don't close - I actually went to Catholic school all the way through. Weirdly, I was not the only kid there. I don't know why the hell it was open, or how I managed to leave and none of my parents or older siblings heard me. YorkU and all other universities/colleges follow this - close for no reason, or wait until it's too late to close LOL.

Trudeau ain't perfect, but at least he knows climate change is real.

January 14, 2019 @ 11:34 PM

Cheryl Traub

Mel Lastman was the best mayor we ever had. I was working during that time. It was a struggle getting to work in all that snow. At the end of it all, I had to stay home and take vacation days. That's what I had to do, so Mel Lastman did the right thing and brought in the army. Still no snow predicting for Friday morning, but Friday night and Saturday there will be, but who cares. I'm home Friday evening and Saturday anyway, so no going out after I get home later on Friday. How about those Habs. I told you they would win in overtime. If you're fed up with the Leafs, cheer for the Habs. Either they or Coyotes will win the cup. My Nets won as well last night. That was great. Nets are going to the NBA finals.

January 15, 2019 @ 7:39 AM

Rob J - did you get free fries yesterday? I don't know how many 3's we made in our Double OT thirller.

Also, haven't heard from bsmtdwllr73 in ages, so hope he is OK and staying safe and warm.

@andrew

I'm not worried yet, Andersen had been out for nearly three weeks and he will need some time to get back into the swing of things. I hope fans realize now how important he has been to this team over the last 3 years, he never gets the amount of credit he truly deserves. The team falls off a cliff without him.

However, if the Canadiens catch the Leafs in the standings and Cheryl pre-orders a Canadiens cake, then I will start to get worried.

RIP Gavin Smith.

One of the greatest Canadian poker players of all-time, was only 50. Other than obviously Daniel Negreanu, he was easily the most notable Canadian to have success in the game. Enjoyed watching him growing up and guys like him and Negreanu really helped develop my interest in the game.

A true hero. Just for those who remember.

January 15, 2019 @ 9:09 PM

Cheryl Traub

Well, how about those Habs. They blew the poor little Panthers away. Isn't that sweet. My Suns lost though. Yes, they lost again. Well, hopefully wins by my Nets and Cavs tonight. Now they are saying snow tomorrow night. I have no idea how much. I can't change anything though. I have to do this. Looking forward to Friday afternoon heading into the weekend although weekends shouldn't really mean that much to me. I'm retired. Yes, Mel Lastman was the best mayor we ever had. If he didn't bring the army in, I would have had to keep taking vacation or unpaid days until who knows when.

Well, great win by my Coyotes. That's wonderful. Also my Nets won as well. Nets are the 2019 NBA championship team. There will be a Nets cake after. Well, my Suns better win tonight. My Cavs lost again last night. No good. Anyway, tomorrow morning won't be quite as bad as I thought. I was going to have to take a cab, but someone will be picking me up instead, maybe closer to 7:45. There is going to be a little snow tonight again though. I don't care about tomorrow night and Saturday. I'll be home then hybernating. I hate winter. Anyway, even though plan got slightly changed, better idea to keep your plan and post the next one tonight in case I have trouble finding it tomorrow morning.

I had never heard of Edenvale Airport before seeing it mentioned twice in the last few weeks. There will be a classic rock music fest ("Roxodus") there in July, and the full-scale Avro Arrow replica and other items formerly on display in the old hangars at Downsview Airport are being moved there.

Open Mike on Thursday night? Trudeau has let things spiral out of control!

@jj

Looks like they're both back on self-mandated hiatuses from this site. But if my ears weren't playing tricks on me, the one who dwells in basements asked a question on the Tyler Stewart episode so he's still around, just not commenting. And I'm sure Rob J will be back, he openly opined that he wouldn't listen to an episode, Mike responded and then Rob J vanished again.

I'm sure both will eventually be back.

January 17, 2019 @ 2:28 PM

Urooj Islam - I figured that's why Rob J was silent, and I know bsmtdwllr sometimes can't always get to the library. Hope they're well. Leave Trubae alone though! ;)

@jj
Thanks for the continued concern! The main reason for my current commenting hiatus other than
a major case of the winter blahs/doldrums is due to major technical issues with TPL's antiquated
computer software (outdated JavaScrapt, possibly). Haven't really had much to say and I try to
limit how often I seek posting assistance from the proprietor via email. It's been nearly 3 weeks
and most of my attempts at posting result in an error message. Hopefully it will work itself out in
time as it is not the first time that this has happened.

Is it too late for me to post very belated condolences regarding Cheryl's favourite and recently
dearly-departed teacher Mr. McDougall?!? She seemed kind of steamed when it didn't gain
much supportive traction, so as I type this I'm covertly raising my half-empty can of Diet Cott
Cola in tribute. Perhaps if I had been fortunate enough to have had such a great teacher, then
I would have been better-positioned to finally start drinking name brand sodas and to perhaps also afford my very own Interwebs connection? Should probably quit while I'm ahead B4 my cutting critics start accusing me of being a freebie- seeking leach/sponge once again. FYI: I would much prefer to be referred to as a "DOUCHE" 'cause at least its namesake item dwells a lot closer to where the "PROVERBIAL ACTION" occurs!!!

Pretty sick and tired of all this Dry January/February chatter both online and in other forms of
media. No need for all those cheesy hashtags and other assorted cliched drivel that has risen
in its overblown wake. One potential, alternative suggestion: Any chance of making FART-FREE-
FEBRUARY a true-life event? Currently far too much impromptu wind-breaking occurring in our
libraries and on our over-crowded public transit vehicles for this smell-sensitive Aspie's liking.
Pretty close to investing in a gas mask to try and at least minimally-mitigate this vastly-under-reported
Olfactory issue. Either that, or I might be forced to start wearing a belt holster and fill it with a couple
of mini cans of Febreze. People, you've been WARNED!! (meaning: Let's try to keep overt public
farting to a bare minimum whenever and wherever possible).
