Starting 2019 like I left 2018....

In first place baby....

Cheryl Traub

Well, so I'm not first. At least I found this one right away. Just so that you know, not next Friday, but the following Friday, I have something on and I have to leave at 7:30. This means I won't be on Open Mike until some time later in the morning or afternoon unless you post it at 7:00 or earlier or post it on the Thursday instead. That's not next week, but the week after. If you don't change for that week, it means I'm going to post later on. I definitely won't be first that week. How about those Habs. They were great, weren't they. Another shutout. How about Carey Price. The Price is right. Basketball night tonight. My Nets, Suns, and Cavs hopefully all get wins.

I'll try to post it the night before so it's there for you when you wake up on that Friday morning. I'd like you to beat Beatts.

Mike's playing sides... Next thing you know he'll be cheering for the bleu, blanc et rouge

We'll call him @MontrealMike

He'll have his own personal baker

We'll all have to start sending him birthday cash.

This is going to spin out of control.

This is my favourite Cheryl post of all time. Thanks for letting us know Cheryl.

Brian Gerstein (Raptors Devotee)

I find it very ironic that DeMar gets his FIRST career triple double against the Raptors last night, and had it done by 3 quarters, save one assist. This game was personal for him, no doubt, and he handled it admirably. Just keep in mind that this was just a regular season game, but even for Kawhi, who was booed mercifully, when he scored the first basket of the game and got the and one, which he missed, he was very emotional, so the game mattered to him more as well, even if he claims it was just another game.

The Raptors are suddenly dealing with numerous issues on the court due to missing Kyle and JV, and the apparent incapability to make 3-point shots, and stop their opponents from making theirs. Right now Serge is breaking down too, having to carry more of the workload sans JV, and Monroe is not the answer to spell him enough, while Fred is not a starting point guard, and he is not in the right role now. He needs to be off the ball as a shooting guard to be proficient. The bench mob from last year has been erratic with Pascal moving to the starting rotation, and teams are able to gameplay easier for the Raptors now that they have more tape to review.

What does this all mean going ahead? Unfortunately, there is no Plan B if Kyle can not return healthy and be able to produce in the playoffs and run the team. He takes charges, is a very physical player, and if the back forces him to alter his game, which I don't think he is capable of, Kawhi alone will not get the Raptors to the finals. Realistically, Masai will not be able to have an alternative should the Raptors face that scenario. What Masai can do is get the atrocious 3-point shooting straightened out, and I have lost faith in the existing roster to straighten things out. I saw a stat where if the Raptors shoot above 35% I believe they are 16-4, so it is not rocket science, they have to hit their 3's or they will lose a series. I have no idea why they have regressed so much. Norm at least looks like a new player since he returned, so if he can get his 3-point shooting going in addition to his excellent work in the paint that would be a good start. I am happy to give him more minutes, as OG has been a lost cause this year, regressing, and Wright is also inconsistent.

Masai is all in this year, so I do expect some moves to help get us to the finals. Standing pat is not going to work, as our competitors in the east will also be making moves to get better, so Masai has no choice, using what assets he has.

January 4, 2019 @ 11:28 AM

jj

Brian - OMG. It has been horrible hasn't it. Can't make threes, don't score in the paint, don't score when they get a free throw (MUNROE) Sheesh. Someone said Nurse is getting fired after this game, what do you think ?

January 4, 2019 @ 11:53 AM

Brian Gerstein (Raptors Devotee)

jj, Raptors are 28-12, .700 winning %, so no need to throw the baby out with the bathwater. Whoever said that Nurse is getting fired after the game is completely clueless and it not worth even discussing.

There are two dates we only need to be looking forward to. The first one is the trading deadline, and we can evaluate where the Raptors are after Masai is done, and the second date is the start of the playoffs, and we can evaluate where the Raptors are as a team heading in. Everything else, including the return of DeMar, is just noise.

Do you remember Johnny Carson as Carl Sagan?
YouTube
Instead of just politicians, there must be some scientist or NASA person that comedians, late night or sketch shows (SNL, etc.) could mock (those damn scientists -- they deserve it). Surely it couldn't be too difficult for one of them to develop a Thomas Zurbuchen impression?
More YouTube
Okay, it might only be a few nerds who recognize it at first, but I don't think a huge percentage of the population would have heard of Sagan before Carson made him more famous.

January 4, 2019 @ 12:06 PM

jj

Brian - I told the person, no way would he be fired before we finish up in the playoffs. And it's the guys on the court who are not scoring buckets too.

I await the trade deadline with baited breath, wonder who is coming, and who is going!

So Damien Cox is no longer with Sportsnet or rogers in any capacity. To be honest I did not mind his writing in the Star years ago but on radio/tv I found him to be a total DICK.He always seemed to think he was the smartest guy at the table.I also think he has burned many bridges over the years with his attitude. I am thinking his next job may be covering flower shows for The North Bay Shopper Weekly.
Good riddance.

January 4, 2019 @ 2:34 PM

The most distressing aspect of your Raptors not nailing threes is that they need to get 12 per game in order for us with the McDonald’s app to get a free medium fries the next day. Come on, you bums!!!

January 4, 2019 @ 3:00 PM

@Toronto Mike

My mistake.

Now, what's the Montreal connection with Great Lakes Brewery, Montreal Mike?!?!?

There has to be one! TELL ME!

January 4, 2019 @ 3:35 PM

Urooj Islam

You guys were right, the Raptors are 6th worst in the NBA in 3-point percentage. And the funny thing is, the Spurs are #1 in the league and they just destroyed our beloved Raptors.

Sometimes perception is not reality so I had to see if the numbers backed up our perception of the Raptors clanking tons of 3-point shots every game and they do.

Not a good sign for the stretch run and the playoffs. :(

January 4, 2019 @ 3:45 PM

Rob J

So many potential free fries left uneaten. I wonder if your Raptors are colluding with Burger King, Wendy’s and A and W to keep customers away from McDonald’s. (Tongue in cheek, people)

January 4, 2019 @ 7:52 PM

Rob J

@jj
Never having been an NBA fan (sorry!), I don’t always remember to check if Toronto nailed the necessary 12. I think I’ve used the offer maybe 4 or 5 times, and Urooj Islam’s research shows that, unless the Raptors pick up the pace, McDonald’s won’t exactly be going broke with the freebie! It’s a fun thing for fans to keep an eye on though.

January 4, 2019 @ 8:10 PM

Cheryl Traub

Okay. Thanks. Remember it's not this coming Friday, but the next one, January 18. I'll remind you closer to the date. Well, I'm feeling sad today. My favourite teacher died, Mr. McDougall. He was 78. It's been a long time ago since I've seen him, but it still feels yucky. He was 78. He didn't even make it to 80, so I'm really sad about Mr. McDougall. He died on Thursday. He was cremated. There will be a celebration of his life on January 14. I won't be able to go because it's in Brantford and I have no way of getting there. Also my Cavs and Suns both lost last night. My Nets won though. My Habs hopefully will win tonight. This is really sad about Mr. McDougall.

January 5, 2019 @ 7:29 AM

jj

Rob J - yes, Urooj is indeed correct with his research. I thought 12 was a number that maybe they hit sometimes, so McD's would indeed not go broke either way.

15 years ago fans of my fave NHL team could use their ticket stub to get a free taco when they (the team, not the fans) scored 3 goals or more. Doesn’t seem like a high bar, but it was the height of the dead-puck era. On TV you could hear the PA announcer bellow, “Fans, that goal was a TACO GOAL!”

You are definitely not too young to have two teenagers, Mike, you are at the perfect age for that and can bike to high school graduations and college graduations before you even turn 50.

But, you are without question too old for two kids under 5.

Thanks for the sympathy, Mike. Too bad there were no other sympathy messages here. Mr. McDougall was a great guy. He used to hug me as well and he would help me with my problems. He was a very special teacher for sure. Now he's gone. He didn't even make it to 80. There's no way I can go to the celebration. My Habs and Cavs both lost last night. This sucks. Well, my Ravens will win today. Of course they will. They're winning the Superbowl. You're all coming to my party the first Saturday after the Superbowl. No smoking is allowed. My hockey team hasn't won in my lifetime.

My basketball team has never won.

My baseball team has won... twice!.. but not since I was a teen.

25+ year personal drought!

January 6, 2019 @ 6:07 PM

Rob J

I've only ever cheered for 2 teams, though I love the NFL as well despite not having a favourite.

NHL: Lost finals in 1981 and 1991, won in 1999, lost finals in 2000.

MLB: lost World Series in 1974, 1977, 1978 (these 3 results occurred in my lifetime but before I was a fan), won in 1981, won in 1988, lost WS in 2017 and 2018.

My drought is coming up on 20 years, though seeing both franchises making it as far as the championship game quite frequently is always a huge thrill.

Peter DeBoer current coach of San Jose Sharks was Drafted by the Leafs in 8th round in 1988.
How many of the current NHL coaches had a good NHL career? None.
It's the avg. or below avg. players playing in their leagues that become great coaches as knowing their forte is learning the game from another perspective & growing in that capacity.

Well, the party is canceled, but there will be a hockey party with my Habs or Coyotes winning the cup. How about those Coyotes last night. That was a great win. They shut the Rangers out. My Ravens lost. They sucked in the first half.

The 2013 MGM casino plan supported by the Fords was to have much of Exhibition Place turned into a large casino complex with the CNE midway moved across Lake Shore Blvd to the Ontario Place parking lot. And it looks like they wanted to put a dome over the Amphitheatre and use it year-round, but maybe leave the rest of Ontario Place as a waterfront park?

I wonder if that's what our dignified premier was getting at back in August on opening day of the CNE when he said he was looking forward to working with the city on redeveloping Exhibition Place and Ontario Place. Since almost nobody in Toronto wants a casino there at all, it would be difficult for Ford to avoid looking like he's making a threat to the city along the lines of something like "You're getting a casino whether you want it or not. It can be at Exhibition Place if you cooperate, or the even worse option of Ontario Place if you don't".

January 7, 2019 @ 8:04 AM

Plus, coaching and playing are two completely different skill sets. Being a brilliant scientist wouldn’t necessarily translate into being a great professor, and a hugely successful radio host wouldn’t automatically be a whiz at fixing radios.

Rob J

@dale
Unfortunately you said yesterday that "none" of the current coaches "had a good NHL career" when that gets shot down quickly by any standard. Saying: none, always, never, everyone, unquestionably, all, etc. in an opinion is very risky!
Besides, there have also been plenty of bad/mediocre players who were terrible as coaches. Another example in your favour was the Patrick Roy disaster in Colorado (did that even happen??), though on the other hand Hall-of-Famer (six Cups as a player!) Larry Robinson head-coached the Devils to a Cup in 2000 (sigh), sandwiched around Cups in 1995 and 2003 as an assistant.

I know it will happen. Trust me. About the gas meter that had to be replaced, they replaced it yesterday. I thought they were going to have to turn the heat off again to replace it, but they didn't so that's good.

So last night I was watching the game, and getting super frustrated, because we should not have been struggling the way we were (that's how I feel anyway) so of course I wanted us to get a big win.

But when it came down to the last 10 seconds, and Vince missed that shot, the look on his face really broke my heart. I wanted us to win, but his reaction after the miss, honestly made me feel sad in the moment. If we had money to burn, he could come back. But, we don't!

That was a truly hail mary shot from Vince... amazing it was as close as it was.... and it would have tied, not won... damn fun finish, though... with a tremendous steal from Kawhi.

On Twitter I saw someone write that they'd drop CJ for Vince and I'd do that too. Not going to happen, but fun to talk about!

Oh... and I've caught most Raptors games his season, and I can't remember a #1 team that seemed to still be working out the kinks. This team is still a work in progress and we still need the KL's to figure out how to play effectively together. It's amazing we're still top of the heap and it's fun to think of what could happen if this team ever puts it all together.

I’ll never get used to fans using ‘we’ and ‘us’ when talking about a team they literally have nothing to do with. It’s so strange!

Surely you're used to it by now.

I say "we" because they represent my city, not because I think I'm a member of the team. I say "we" for all Toronto teams.

I guess the letdown of not getting free fries today affected my mood. As you were!

Rob J - let US be! Haha. Us just has a nice ring to it.

TM - Omg, CJ for Vince, what a trip. Poor CJ, I feel bad he is slumping, I still think he is an awesome addition regardless. I know we are working out kinks, and we have had many injuries - it's just frustrating to see them struggle against teams who are not doing hot at all.

Well, my Nets won. That's great. Nets are going to make their way to the finals. My Cavs and Suns both lost. Cavs can't win anymore. Last win was on my birthday. My Habs play the Blues tonight. Good thing for them because the Blues will be singing the Blues when they get beat by my Habs. My Coyotes will also beat the Canucks tonight. So tomorrow is a normal day. It's a week from tomorrow that it's not normal. I have to leave at 7:30 that day so you have to post the open Mike early or the night before. Boy, it better not be a big snow storm or anything that day, but who knows. That would be awful if we have 40 cm of snow that day. Then what do we do? Who knows. Anyway, so it's a week from tomorrow unless you want me to be deep down in the comments.

Mike if it wouldn't be too much bother, I'd like to have tomorrow's Open Mike font changed to Comic Sans when you post it to the site.

I'm only asking because I've booked a hair cut appointment at 8 am and will be unavailable to read any text unless it is in Comic Sans.

Thanks, you're a doll.

Probably not worthy of a separate TM entry, but RIP to former MLB hitting coach Rick Down. 27 consecutive years employed by various teams including the Yankees, Red Sox, Dodgers, Orioles, and Mets isn’t necessarily Hall of Fame-worthy, but the sport wouldn’t be the same without the guys in the trenches, making players better behind the scenes and out of the headlines.

I wish he did more acting while he was still around, I thought his acting was pretty underrated.

@Urooj Islam
His acting was also great especially with his role in The Elephant Man & also The Man Who Fell From the Grace From the Earth.
My fave song of his is Heroes & could listen to it 24/7.
RIP Major Tom
