Cheryl, what are your thoughts on New Year's?

Do you hate it as much as you hate Christmas? Hate it less? More? About the same?

I'll hang up and listen.

December 28, 2018 @ 8:10 AM

Cheryl Traub

Well, good question. No, I don't hate New Years as much as I hate Christmas. It's not a favourite though. I mean it's like any other day. At least there is no Santa Claus junk around. Well, my Coyotes lost. That's no good that they had to lose, but Coyotes and Habs will be in the finals. Well, my Cavs better win tonight as well as my Nets and Suns. They all need to win.

Mike, you should totally get Bruce Arthur on your podcast. He would be a great guest I think.

December 28, 2018 @ 10:36 AM

We all got a reminder yesterday of how bad the NHL all-star format is. 4 teams; each with 6/7 forwards, 2/3 D-men, and 2 goalies. 11 players on each team, with a requirement that a representative from all 8 teams is on the roster. That leaves 3 extra spots open for the whole division. With Matthews as captain and Reilly being a sure lock, it's possible that none of Andersen/Marner/Tavares are named to the team, which is ridiculous. The heavily constricted roster rules are unnecessary.

Also, does anyone even watch the all-star game anymore? Are people really into this 4 team tournament idea? I don't know a single person who still watches. It feels like this game has flown off the handle a little bit as the NHL has tried to change things (almost on a yearly basis). They should go back to East-West or N.A vs. World.

This came up on today's Hebsy on Sports. Expect to hear the word "snubbed".

December 28, 2018 @ 10:54 AM

twins from bolton

Talk about being snubbed. People with Birthdays in Dec. I really feel sorry for them. My twins were born Dec. 2nd & had parties for them at the age early Dec. & decided 1 year to have their party day before Halloween which was the best for them. My grandson born 12/13/14 (Dec. 13 - just turned 4) & his parents & us grandparents didn't forget that.
Mine is between Xmas & New Years (an old fart) & being given Xmas presents as a kid was always told this is for Xmas & YOUR BDAY. Constant from external family members except my Mom & Dad who never forgot. Tomorrow is just another day for me & that's OK as I'm used to it in my 60+ years.
Happy New Year to ALL & all the best in 2019.

I did ask Bruce a couple of years ago, but he said he was busy raising four kids.

Maybe I'll try again soon.

Everyone says twins is twice the trouble & with wifey & I after getting news about having twins it's not twice the trouble but 10X as per TPOMBA but well worth it overall.

December 28, 2018 @ 5:15 PM

twins from bolton

TPOMBA stands for Toronto Parents Of Multiple Births Assoc. which wifey was a regional chairperson for West Toronto 2 years after our twins were born with meetings with those about to have multiple births at our house once every month.

December 28, 2018 @ 8:29 PM

Blind Dave

My b-day is Dec 24 and I went through the same late December nonsense as a kid. Once I hit adulthood and independence I really didn't care.

Good health and lots of happiness, everyone!

December 28, 2018 @ 9:06 PM

@twins from bolton

I first read the phrasing of your sentence "...with meetings with those about to have multiple births at our house..." and wondered just why your house was a birthing site. LOL! :) Took me a second to see what you meant there. But anyway, didn't know there was an association for multiple births but I suppose it makes sense - some different things to master that many people probably don't think of.

December 28, 2018 @ 9:36 PM

twins from bolton

Just meetings with future Mommies at our house & was not a birthing site. Talking about after their birth.
Anybody having a multiple birth situation in future should contact TPOMBA as sure made a difference for the better for us. COMPASSION.

Well, my Cavs, Nets, and Suns all fricken lost. That's no good at all. Oh well, my Cavs, Nets, and Suns better win tonight as well as my Habs and Coyotes. What a day today. My heat pump stopped working. Also there's no hot water in my building. This sucks big time. It may be a whole weekend without heat or hot water. It sucks big time.

December 29, 2018 @ 7:10 AM

Heads up, but you might want to look into some kind of registration for the words "REAL TALK",
'cause in their new thick coffee table book "The Beasties Book", I believe that Adam Horowitz used
that phrase at one point and he boldly put the trademark symbol (TM) beside it!! A very comprehensive volume and a great read for all Beastie Boys fans, with lots of written and photographic tributes to Adam Yauch included. There is also an impressive, completely annotated foldout of all the band's DJ and musical equipment.

When I get my cease and desist from the surviving Beastie Boys for using the hashtag #realtalk for my podcast, I'll get it framed and hang it in my studio.

December 29, 2018 @ 1:21 PM

I'm pretty sure that you will never have to worry 'bout that, but feel free to get in touch with them
and alert them to your superior blogging/podcasting product, and maybe they'll find the time to
drop by if they ever happen to find themselves in the Six?!?

Nothing worse than spending your birthday with the wife & son at home with the flu. All feeling a little better now.
Thankfully 3 bathrooms in the house.

December 29, 2018 @ 9:40 PM

Cheryl Traub

Well, my Habs and Coyotes won last night, but my Cavs, Nets, and Suns all lost. Well, got portable heaters on for heat, but I can't shower because there's no fricken hot water. I don't know if there is still a technician on site or not. Maybe there is. There better be. Apparently all the valves need to be replaced as well as some other things. It's really really awful, that's for sure. Anyway, I don't know when they will get it fixed. Well, probably lots of people are on fricken holidays so that's no good. Maybe the heat will be off for weeks and weeks. This really really sucks.

December 30, 2018 @ 6:16 AM

Finally caught The Tea Party in concert last night, they were excellent as expected. Enjoyed the bits of covers they interspersed in the set (Heroes, With or Without You) , that Jeff Martin has such a great voice.
Earlier in the year, also saw a Finger 11/I Mother Earth show, which was freaking fantastic. Thought I was more of an IME fan, but Finger 11 blew me away with their energy and stage presence. Would def see them again.
Hoping 2019 brings more great concerts my way. Nothing booked yet....

December 30, 2018 @ 8:11 AM

@ Cheryl
Check the scores again from last night - your Habs LOST.

December 30, 2018 @ 10:12 AM

@ Andrew..Cheryl is only here to crave attention.Facts and actual true stories only get in the way.

December 30, 2018 @ 3:25 PM

2 of her fave teams are the worst in each division, the Cavs & the Suns. Basketball.
2 of her fave hockey teams are bad also. Hockey,
The Chief Wahoo cake was thrown in composter in September. Baseball.
Football - her Ravens made the playoffs & none others did, Browns & Cardinals.
That's her only hope.
I agree with wanting attention but at times it's a LOL.

"Check the scores again from last night - your Habs LOST."

Do the Lightning ever lose? Kinda frustrating as a Leafs fan to be chasing down a team that never loses.

December 30, 2018 @ 10:47 PM

Cheryl Traub

Well, so I made a mistake. My Habs lost their last game, but they'll win tonight as they play the Stars. Stars? Well, they won't be stars anymore once they get beaten by my Habs. My Ravens will be in the playoffs and so there will be a Ravens Cake. It will have purple candies all around it on the purple icing. That will be for my Superbowl party first Saturday after the Superbowl. My Coyotes lost. That was no good getting beaten by the Golden Showers. Well, heat is finally back on. Apparently there was something wrong with the gas meter and an internal component had to be replaced. Well, they finally got it back up around noon yesterday, but some time in January they have to turn it off for three or four hours because Enbridge or whatever has to replace the gas meter. I mean what does replacing a gas meter have to do with turning off the heat? They should just leave things alone until the summer when we don't need heat anymore. Maybe they can't do that. Remember Superbowl party first Saturday after the Superbowl. Party starts at noon and ends whenever you want it to end. If you want a piece of Ravens cake, be there.

December 31, 2018 @ 7:30 AM

Anyways, the heat & hot water catastrophe has come to a happy ending but alas we turn the page and a new chapter begins.
The Gas Meter Chronicles...perhaps a missed appointment?? A new never heard of before character ?? I am sure some major problem lurks ahead..

I know literally no one will care, but here is my just-for-fun baseball Hall of Fame ballot:
I know Bonds/Clemens have the taint of PEDs (as do others who are already enshrined), but since MLB didn’t give a hoot until Congress pressed them in 2004, the era before that was too much of a ‘wild west’ to make any objective conclusions. I’d love to have supported Manny Ramirez, but the 2 failed tests darkens his legay beyond repair.
Halladay was tricky in that I’ve always believed both Mussina and Schilling had greater impacts, especially in post-season, though Halladay’s playoff no-hitter in 2010 was an incredible achievement.
The writers have inducted 16 names into the Hall the last 5 years which cleared up the backlog, but this era is still behind previous ones in terms of elected hall of famers. (Historically each team has an average of 1-1.5 future hall of famers on its roster).

It will be interesting to see if Rivera becomes the first ever to be voted in unanimously. So far the highest percentage all-time is Griffey, Jr at 99.3%.

Well, my Habs won. Boy it was close, but they won. My Suns lost though. That was no good. Well, I don't know when they're going to replace the gas meter. I have no idea. They said some time in January, but who knows. Yes, there will really be a Ravens cake. The Ravens are winning the Superbowl. I know this. It will be purple like a raven and it will have purple candies all around it. Of course I'll be playing lots of Bob Seger and John Mellencamp at the party. It's going to be a blast.

January 1, 2019 @ 7:11 AM

WHY would anyone want to do the Polar Bear swim at Sunnyside?
Please explain.

January 1, 2019 @ 12:04 PM

It would have been amusing if one of Cheryl's NFL teams, Cleveland, could have beaten another, Baltimore, as that would have eliminated all of them from making the playoffs.
Her other team, Arizona, lost to ensure the NFL's worst record at 3-13 and first pick in the draft, ahead 3 others at 4-12, including the Raiders who couldn't even tank well enough to get the first pick after trading away their best players to Dallas and Chicago (who both made the playoffs). And the Raiders still don't know where they will be playing their home games in 2019.

January 1, 2019 @ 2:24 PM

Am I the only one whose disappointed that Citytv no longer airs the New Year's Eve bash from City Hall? I know there's still a party down there but it was cool when it was televised. Canada doesn't have a nationally televised countdown. I was watching CNN and they had a reporter in Niagara Falls, Canada.

Global televised the New Year's Eve bash in Niagara Falls for a few years but it apparently became too expensive.

January 1, 2019 @ 7:31 PM

Purple candles is a good idea. Anyway, you're all invited. It will be a blast party. I know it will. We'll all celebrate the Ravens winning the Superbowl. The first Saturday after the Superbowl will be the day of the party. Boy, this will really make my place crowded. Well, let's win some basketball tonight, Cavs,Nets, and Suns. Let's hope my Coyotes win as well.

January 2, 2019 @ 7:21 AM

Normally I don't care to much about the first round of the NFL playoffs as it basically just weeds out the teams that should not be in the playoffs anyway.I know someone will say "a wild card team has won The Super Bowl" very true but also the Leafs have won the Cup over 50 years ago.Flukes do happen.Getting back to my point I would really like to see Baltimore loose and as a bonus get shut out.

January 2, 2019 @ 8:46 AM

Aidan - CBC didn't air anything either? I thought they did for some reason :/

Maybe not enough people watched the City one, so they ended the viewing. I didn't, but it was obviously loved and it's always nice to have something from Toronto on NYE for many people I am sure.

January 2, 2019 @ 9:42 AM

Also, I am trying to do better to be present at work - less cellphone time. But I will still come here!

I also want to know why the Raptors are churning out struggle wins. A win is a win, but I kinda side eye them when they can't blow out some of these teams. Either way, I cannot wait for Thursday - I am going to cryyyyy when I see their DeMar tribute.

January 2, 2019 @ 9:46 AM

If I'm not mistaken, CBC was doing an "All Across Canada" New Years show but I don't know if it was live. It certainly wasn't like what the Citytv New Years Eve Bash used to be or what you'll see in New York City. We're a country of 35 Million people, we should have a national show. I rather be giving my viewership to a live Canadian show rather than an American one.

January 2, 2019 @ 11:14 AM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

There was definitely a CBC thing at 11pm with bands performing in different provinces and CBC personalities like the Air Farce and Baroness Von Sketch peeps. I caught some of it.

This was the show I believe Walk Off The Earth was going to play.

January 2, 2019 @ 11:16 AM

Aidan - Ah, ok that makes sense. I agree, I would support a Canadian live show, I would think the CBC one was live at most times? As much as some hate on it, I think the CBC should always be around for Canadians - even if younger Canadians like myself don't necessarily use it per se. I like a national broadcaster.

TM - yes, I saw comments about the CBC on another site I frequent - for celebrity gossip! That's so sad about the member of Walk Off The Earth - sigh.

January 2, 2019 @ 11:27 AM

We looked for a decent show at 11:30 New years eve and were pretty disappointed that City wasn't running anything. The CBC show had someone playing just prior to midnight that my wife HATED. Not sure why not to my taste either but ..

We ended up watching CP24 as they covered City hall. Just for the countdown. And then really only for my daughter and her friend. If it wasn't for them honestly I could have been in bed.

January 2, 2019 @ 12:04 PM

Cheryl Traub

What a night last night. Well, my Nets won, but my Cavs, Suns, and Coyotes lost. This is no good. Yes, my Ravens are winning the Superbowl. My party is the first Saturday after they win it. There will be a Ravens cake. Yes, that's the truth. Purple icing with some purple grape candies around the edges of the raven. My Ravens are winning the Superbowl. I know they will. My personal baker is baking a cake. It will be so good.

January 3, 2019 @ 6:30 AM

Cheryl is this a pants optional event ?

January 3, 2019 @ 8:15 AM

I made the mistake of listening to a few minutes of a NewsTalk 1010 round-table (Bill Hayes was the substitute host and I think Mark Towhey might been one of the panelists), just before 9:30 a.m. this morning when the subject of discussion happened to be DNA testing by police to find serial killers. Do any of these panelists ever actually read and understand anything themselves, instead of listening only to their tinfoil-hat-wearing, elementary school dropout friend or relative and thinks DNA testing steals your soul?
One talked about "if you refuse to give police a DNA sample", and another asked something like "What if someone broke into a lab where one of those companies like 23andMe stored samples?" Eeesh.

You leave potential samples with your DNA everywhere. They are about as "private" or "secret" as the air you exhale. If someone (and I'm not quite sure why anyone other than police would realistically want to anyway) wanted to obtain some kind of sample from you to test, it wouldn't be all that difficult. If police investigators think you might be responsible for a series of rapes and murders, they probably aren't going to politely knock on your door and ask permission to swab the inside of your mouth for a sample. What they do, as in the recently highly publicized U.S. cases (Link), is have an undercover officer follow you until you discard a coffee cup (or paper napkin etc.) they can collect and test.

And even more ridiculous -- exactly how does this radio panelist imagine the scenario working for the 23andMe break-in being used to "frame" someone? Would a vengeful corrupt cop go to the trouble of trying to get a saliva sample -- strangely already mixed with the fixative solution -- from this hypothetical break-in (after he was somehow able to surreptitiously find the exact numbered sample of the specific person he wants to frame), then wait for a murder to happen, then hope no one was looking as he splashed some of this lab solution with the fixative chemical at the scene? Wouldn't it be much easier for this vengeful framer cop to just follow around the person he wanted to frame and get a tissue? And even then, how would he make sure to get everyone else to somehow completely ignore the other samples (blood, semen, hair, skin under victim's fingernails, etc.) that strangely matched someone else, and instead only pay attention to the tissue, or the blue fixative and saliva solution that seems a lot more like a sample already stored at a DNA lab yet somehow strangely showed up at this murder scene? (or for that matter, ignore all the other likely evidence that the person matching the tissue or fixative sample was somewhere else with other people while the murder occurred?)
[sarcasm]Uh, yeah, that sounds like it could happen.[/sarcasm]

January 3, 2019 @ 12:56 PM

Urooj Islam

The privacy issue is more about these sites sharing private information with police and others.

Police are using civilian DNA databases that these sites compile in order to track down suspects in unsolved cases who may be related to some random schlub who submitted his/her DNA to an Ancestry or 23AndMe.

January 3, 2019 @ 3:34 PM

James Edgar

I'm not 100% sure i'd care if my DNA got used to track down a Murderous relative to be honest.

I know i'm "Supposed "too but really if i have murdering /raping relatives I'd just as soon they were not walking around potentially doing more of that kind of thing.

January 3, 2019 @ 4:21 PM

These companies aren't sharing anyone's private information with police. Like the article says, the police use GEDmatch in the same way as everyone else who uses it. This is a site where people voluntarily (and it's free, btw) upload their raw data they obtained from any of the testing companies, for the most part specifically to be compared with all of the others who have done it, so it can display a list of those who match and the degree of match (something like "likely third cousin", etc.). It doesn't involve the police getting your DNA sample or DNA data (the actual A,C,G,T's) from GEDmatch. The only thing the police want and get is the list of potential relatives of the otherwise unknown murderer, and anything else would be pointless to them anyway.

Part of the process of uploading your data specifically mentions that, although intended to be used for genealogy, the site could possibly be used for "DNA obtained and authorized by law enforcement to either: (1) identify a perpetrator of a violent crime against another individual; or (2) identify remains of a deceased individual". And people can also delete their data and sign-up info, I suppose if they are suddenly upset to somehow later realize they might be unknowingly helping catch a serial killer, and had not even bothered to quickly glance over the information initially shown to them.

And btw, what exactly is it that people are supposed to be paranoid about if someone actually did get to see their DNA data anyway? Do they think this will somehow maybe give people access to their bank account or something like that? Or maybe steal their soul? It would be a little like someone seeing your blood type (except someone might actually remember that a lot more easily than hundreds of thousands of SNP's).

January 3, 2019 @ 7:01 PM

Urooj Islam

Wow, a triple double in only 33 minutes. Good for DeRozan,
