Hitting refresh like a villain....

Happy Friday Cheryl

I found it. Okay. Just when I was going to give up. I got my card yesterday. That's great. I had to get someone to help me sign it and read me the numbers though. It's a pain to change everything. Anyway, I posted on the old open Mike because I couldn't find this one. I have to leave in 15 minutes. My Habs won. My Coyotes blew it. My Suns lost. I need my Cavs, Nets, and Suns to win tonight.

December 7, 2018 @ 8:18 AM

A Fairytale for you, Mike.

Sorry for the delay, I was in the shower.

Jimmy does a pretty good Shane MacGowan!

I also noticed they omitted the troublesome verse.

December 7, 2018 @ 8:23 AM

So they are banning Baby, It’s Cold Outside from the radio. I like the song. I like a lot of the versions of the song. I have always thought it was a bit creepy but a little fun. I think banning it is silly.

However, I am not going to be upset about. If I want to listen to it I can use my iPod or a CD or any other form of media to play it. If losing the song off the radio for a few weeks of the year is a bit of the collateral damage from a lot of men getting their comeuppance or women getting justice or even sexually assaulted just a little less then I am pretty good with it. The outage over #metoo going too far is more absurd. If losing one song off the radio is going to ruin your Christmas then you probably need to revaluate your life.

So ban the song and keep bringing the people down that perpetuate the terrible climate that has been built. I am a little annoyed at the first part but I am praising the second. So in the end, it’s worth it.

December 7, 2018 @ 9:12 AM

McNulty - one of my friends commented how everyone is getting so sensitive. and i know sometimes i am part of that crew, but i really like your answer. thanks for that perspective.

I've been thinking about my favourite Christmas song, Fairytale of New York. As you likely know, this song includes a homophobic slur.

Now, I don't believe that's how it was intended, because over there they use that word to mean "lazy" and it's primarily on this side of the pond that it carries such hateful weight. But, my thoughts are this...

Stop playing the song on the radio. That word hurts people - so either censor it or don't play it. I have the song in my personal collection and can hear it whenever I wish. I understand the context.

Now I'm thinking I should probably stop playing it on my podcast as well. I mean, podcasts are just the new radio, right?

It's a great song, but that f word is too hurtful to too many.

December 7, 2018 @ 9:51 AM

Yes, Mike. That is my point exactly. Just be aware of how other people feel about things. Just like when I am told, “Happy Holidays!” I am not offended. I celebrate Christmas but I also realise others do not. It does not affect my enjoyment to be told something other than Merry Christmas. It doesn’t bother me that my kids used to participate in a “Holiday” concert at school. I still had a Christmas tree at home and Santa came and delivered presents. The lack of a school Christmas show didn’t affect our enjoyment in the least.

December 7, 2018 @ 10:37 AM

Ben Vidal

Someone else recently said this, but I agree. "Mark my words in 4 years Doug Ford will go down in history as the most corrupt Premier this province ever sees"

In his first 5 months in office he's off to a roaring start pissing away over $250 illion in tax payers money, circumventing a process to higher his friend as OPP commissioner and reducing the size of Toronto council. The last which in the end wasn't a cost savings because the 25 remaining Councillors need more staff and money to handle 2 X the constituents and workload.

This is just the tip of the iceberg, there are his neighbors he's forced OCS to hire, and the contracts for bricks and mortar stores for cannabis that will go to his friends. Or we lose the provinces top accountant because the government wants to overstate the deficit so they can cut more.

Oh and the whole banning the Baby it's Cold Outside christmas song is dumb. People are too sensitive

December 7, 2018 @ 10:47 AM

@ Ben

And in four years people won't care. That's the sad part. They'll still vote for him. Listen to people defend the OPP thing. It that was Wynne they'd want her head. But for Ford? Crickets.

December 7, 2018 @ 11:24 AM

Ben Vidal

@ McNulty: If things weren't bad right now Doug wouldn't be running away like a coward 2 weeks early so that he doesn't have to face queens park.

As for the whole song banning. It is dumb, I get that people could be offended, but who and why? I think this was more of a stunt by a radio station to try and stay relevant than anything else. There are a plethora of songs out there that I think are offensive, I just change the radio station. Even if I don't change the station there are a tonne of R&B, rap, The other part is that just because I find them offensive doesn't mean others will. That's the whole problem with taking offense, it can and is often up to the person what offends them.

It's a slippery slope, because where does it end. The other side of it is like Mike said he has his own personal music player as does pretty much everyone now, you don't even have to listen to the radio or any potential songs that bother you

Cheryl's birthday is in 5 days, what are everyone's plans?

December 7, 2018 @ 2:25 PM

Jason from Sudbury

Banning songs off of the radio is dumb and it is a slippery slope. People need to remember the context these songs are written in, for example "Baby It's Cold Outside", think of the time it was written in. But instead people want to twist and turn shit into something else. I don't get it. Political Correctness has gone way too far and its not getting any better. Why do we gotta be so scared to say the wrong thing or so scared to offend someone. People need to grow some balls and get over it.

December 7, 2018 @ 3:20 PM

Rob J

@Urooj Islam

You, me, Mike Richards, and Doug Gilmour should surprise Cheryl with a birthday visit, haha.

December 7, 2018 @ 4:50 PM

The song banning isn’t a slippery slope. Yes, you can look at Baby, It’s Cold Outside from when it was written. I enjoy the song. However, we don’t look at The Jazz Singer as the time it was written. In today’s climate we don’t watch it anymore. It’s offensive.

It’s a song. It’s not on the radio. Big deal.

If the radio stations face lower rating as a result then that’s their choice. Odds are they won’t. It’s just a song. And it’s just a Christmas song.

I wish they’d ban the Christmas Shoes song. Now that’s offensive!!

December 7, 2018 @ 5:30 PM

Rob J

Whoa, starting in 2019, English Premier League TV rights move from TSN/Sportsnet to the online steaming service DAZN.

December 7, 2018 @ 6:47 PM

McNulty - people always say, what about hip hop and rNb - ban those songs too! lots of stuff is bleeped out in hip hop or censored. when i hear dancehall on the radio, it is always censored. and i have some dancehall songs i hate hearing, and i boo when they come on at the event i'm at. no slippery slope, people are upset that we all have to face some hard truths!

December 7, 2018 @ 6:56 PM

Rick C in Oakville

First off I want to give my fellow Mustang clubs members a shout out as we have raised approximately $43,000 for the Salvation Army, over the past 9 years through an Ikettle campaign.!
It is a great cause at this time of year.

Baby its cold outside was written in 1944, a whole different time to what we are in now. WW2 was still in full swing, we just can't apply the current morals/sensitivities to a different era. Might as well ban Frank and Dean, Elvis etc. movies that today look very sexist.

I know Cheryl gets razzed ( okay I was born almost 6 decades ago) for her contributions here but I truly appreciate her passion she shows in her postings. I will gladly lift up a GLB Octupus wants to fight on her birthday !

@Rob J

Former Habs "great" Doug Gilmour, Cheryl would be ecstatic as a big Canadiens fan.

I love being off social media because I am always out of the loop in regards to whatever people are mad about today. Apparently, judging from these comments, people are mad about a Christmas song or something. Tomorrow it'll be something else.

December 7, 2018 @ 9:13 PM

Rob J

@Urooj Islam

I'm a huge Cheryl fan. She updates us on her teams with the same vigor win, lose, or draw. I know too many fans that develop situational amnesia when their heroes are in the depths ("what's a baseball?), but never shut up during the good times, as if they had something to do with it, or as if they're unpaid PR reps for the team.

People on both sides of the song 'controversy' need to go far away and think about what they've done.

December 7, 2018 @ 9:56 PM

Jason from Sudbury

So now that we're banning songs off the radio are we going to ban "White Christmas" because its considered racist? And we might as well ban "Rudolph The Red Nose Reindeer" because he got picked on for having a red nose which is considered bullying today.

December 8, 2018 @ 12:41 AM

Cheryl Traub

I don't like that song Baby It's Cold outside anyway. I don't care one way or the other. I really don't like Christmas music. I have plans on my birthday. I may not be home during the day, but I do have a Cavs game on my birthday. I know that. My Cavs lost again last night. That sucked. My Nets did win though even if it was only by a point. My Suns lost. No Habs tonight. Surprise. They play tomorrow. Hopefully my Coyotes will win tonight as well as my Cavs and Nets.

When I was Chief Planner in Toronto, Mayor Ford approached staff and asked them to 'look the other way' when a family friend's business was caught dumping toxic chemicals into the river. Staff refused. Yesterday, Doug Ford's government made doing so legal. Beyond the pale.

If the current schedule holds, it's actually Ashley Docking.

Who should #416 go to?

December 8, 2018 @ 8:50 PM

Who is even playing White Christmas on TV? If they ban it, I'll watch my Blu ray in the comfort of my basement. One song with crappy lyrics and people on and on about how bad the world is going to end up being when some residents of this province thought Doug Ford might not be as bad as Wynne, or we had no good options to vote in for premier.

And as a mixed person, I just took in that the only black person in White Christmas is the guy in the serving car in the train. I guess there were no black people in New York or Vermont when that movie was filmed tho 😒😒😒🤔🤔🤔

December 8, 2018 @ 10:22 PM

And I love White Christmas, and watch it multiple times during the season. But even I know it's not perfect, and that it's a product of its time period. But still, lol, there is no one looking like me in my favorite Christmas movie, except for the dude who served them food.

Fun fact: The movie is actually called Holiday Inn.

Bonus fun fact The "White" in "White Christmas" is referencing snow, not skin colour.

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

I'm an idiot. There is also a movie called White Christmas, but Holiday Inn came first! And Holiday Inn did include Bing Crosby singing White Christmas.

December 8, 2018 @ 10:31 PM

Rob J

There weren’t many films or TV shows of any sort produced in the US during the Eisenhower like era “White Christmas” that depicted non-whites admirably or in starring roles. That reality was not limited to one movie whatsoever.

December 8, 2018 @ 10:51 PM

Cheryl Traub

My Cavs and Nets won last night. Basketball was great. My Coyotes didn't win though. That was not good. Well, my Habs play tonight. They'll win. Yes, they will do that and win the game. Football today. Since my birthday is coming up, I want wins by my Browns, Ravens and Cardinals, so please win. I need everyone to win.

December 9, 2018 @ 7:45 AM

Rob J - I know that, and I love White Christmas and It's A Wonderful Life! And hundreds of movies from that era. Are all those movies things we should be looking at now in this day and age, when we know better?

TM - I've never seen Holiday Inn. And exactly, the White in White Christmas has to do with the lack of snow in beautiful Vermont.

December 9, 2018 @ 8:27 AM

Rob J

I was agreeing with you and adding to your point. Watch it, don’t watch it, watch it backwards, do what you want.

December 9, 2018 @ 9:51 AM

When Queen was mentioned here in the last couple of weeks, I looked up the lyrics for 'March of the Black Queen' as I was listening to it on YouTube. I didn't know (or possibly had long forgotten) that the N-word was in there. Bad Freddie!

Well, my Browns were great yesterday. The Cleveland Browns are the best. They won. There will be a Browns cake at my Superbowl party. My Ravens blew it and my Cardinals really lost. I only got one football win. Love those Browns. My Habs also won. That's great. I knew they would. Habs and Coyotes in the finals. My Cavs will win tonight. Yes, they will do that. tomorrow is my birthday eve and Wednesday is my birthday. Remember that. I need lots of happy birthday messages.

December 10, 2018 @ 7:22 AM

Ok the Bi-way thing has gotten out of hand...

I legit dreamed last night that I found an even older version of the bi-way bag and was excited to take a picture of it to send to Mike. I had to message him and ask how to proper post it on the chat.

Next I'll be dreaming about baking Cheryl's Superbowl party cake

December 10, 2018 @ 7:55 AM

Livin' the dream ?

A friend of mine mentioned having a dream about the girl who sat in front of him in his eighth grade class, when he was 13-years-old. His wife heard this, and her reaction was "You're a middle-aged man dreaming about a 13-year-old girl. You're a f#*%ing pervert!"

December 11, 2018 @ 6:34 AM

Looking forward to Mike's special birthday show tomorrow.

He'll be doing a deep dive #realtalk with Cheryl's baker where they'll discuss Cheryl's 8 consecutive deposits placed for various NHL/NFL/MLB/NBA cakes that were never needed.

Next up he welcomes Cheryl's mail carrier. They will have and open and frank discussion about stalling tactics employed and where all the great condo deals around the city are.

Finally, a very special visit from the right honorable Justin Trudeau. Justin and Mike discuss his plans to sell Canada Post to a Nigerian Company for a very large sum of money, once Justin sends Canada's bank info. Justin and Mike share a laugh as Mike joke's about not sending the info through Canada post due to the delays.

Toronto Mike's selfie with My Trudeau is of note, due to capturing Justin give a new $10 bank note to a homeless man outside of Mike's house as a symbolic gesture of Christmas spirit. Keen, long time readers of the blog will spot the homeless man to actually be Oshawa Elvis. Word on the street is that Elvis won't listen to the episode, but will keep the $10

When half-awake this morning, I turned on the radio during the 7:30 a.m. news, and then quickly reached to shut it off to avoid hearing Tom from Tom's Place. But just before I hit 'off', I think I heard him trying to say "unique" but instead call his operation a "eunuch store".

My new ritual, when I've got the kids ready and dropped off at school/daycare, is to say "Hey Google, good morning" when I get home so my smart speaker can give me the time, weather, latest news update from CBC and latest sports updates from Sportsnet and TSN.

The main reason I'm bringing in sports from both Sportsnet and TSN is that they don't consistently update... so this morning, for example, the Sportsnet update was from yesterday afternoon before the Leafs and Raptors games. The TSN update was from early this morning, and had all of last night's games.

The beauty about Jays coverage now and into the 2019 season is that the Raptors/Leafs are so simultaneously good that no one will even notice how bad the Jays are or if the corpora-tized Jays media decides to be honest with the fan base or not.

Frankly, it doesn't matter because no one will be paying much attention. I don't think most Jays fans (myself included) are ready for how bad this team could be.

December 13, 2018 @ 7:37 PM

Rob J

@Urooj Islam

The Jays' attendance numbers will crater big-time, but the TV ratings will still be strong, especially the days after the Leafs and Raptors' parades in late June.
I don't follow the ins-and outs of the Jays more than any other team besides my fave, but I'm shocked at the vitriol that's still directed at the current Jays' management team.
Having the team and its media intertwined works wonderfully when times are good and reporters can strap on the champagne-resistant goggles, but it's terribly messy during lean years, when any smart fan can sniff out when they're being sold a bill of goods by radio and TV personalities who have to tread so carefully between not treating the audience like children and keeping their jobs. Of course, there'll always be fans/media who play the "why so negative?" card even during a disastrous season. but I guess they have their place, too.
I noticed FanGraphs has the Jays pegged at around 77 wins (can't remember the exact number), so it may not be an all-time sinkhole some are envisioning.
