Hello all. Happy Friday. My oldest is home this weekend from University for the first time since she left :) All is going great so far.

September 21, 2018 @ 7:57 AM

Goody, I'm first. Well, how about those Browns. They were losing 14 to 0 at one point, 14 to 3 at the half. They had a comeback win. That's because my Browns are great. On Sunday my Ravens and Cardinals will win. My Indians lost though. That sucked. That's no good. My Orioles and Diamondbacks didn't play. Well, Rogers has to come today. I don't know why I need new lines or whatever. I have no idea why they couldn't do everything on Tuesday. Oh well, it sucks. Who knows. Rogers may have to come back again, and they told me it wouldn't be a very long visit. Well, they better have things all working. Who knows.

This weekend is my oldest daughter's final soccer matches. It's a tournament at High Park for the championship. I've been advised by my sweet 14 year old that she's 80% sure she won't be playing soccer next summer.

This has me totally bummed out. Two nights a week all summer long I've been biking with Michelle to soccer and it's great one-on-one time. I love it! And now it's coming to an end. :(

Andy Kim's - Who Has the Answers is one of my all-time favourite Canadian songs. And in terms of Canadian TV Show Theme Songs - some awesome stuff out there : Parlez-Moi, Seeing Things, Night Heat, Beachcombers, Littlest Hobo...and the list goes on and on.

Looking forward to hearing the talks with Ed and Andy!

More media criticism from Steve Simmons today as he goes after Rogers again, bemoaning that there's no "voice of the Blue Jays" which causes "unnecessary confusion for everyone."

I do not live in the 416 anymore, but just curious if people really think there will be major issues with the City having the same amount of councilors/wards as we have for Provincial and Federal representation. Forgot how this came to be, but at the end of the day from a non political position will a streamlined City council be better, worse or a non issue for Toronto citizens?

September 21, 2018 @ 10:18 AM

@Dr. Seymour Light

The outcry, as I see it, is far more about the process than the policy.

Everything about the way this went down stinks.

@Dr. Seymour Light - most councillors already spend crazy hours reading through motions, reports, recommendations. More hours is also spent on answering residents' questions and meeting them in person, whether they are reasonable or not. Gord Perks tweeted that even Doug himself was shocked to see how many hours per week a councillor normally spends on the above. Accordingly, Doug and a few other suburb councillors had the lowest council attendance rates, and judging by their comments on issues, seem to not care to read the reports.
Cutting the council in half will make all this much more difficult and create huge backlogs. Good luck trying to get hold of councillor now, and understandably so, because they will be busy preparing for committee and council meetings and decisions that will have City-wide consequences. It's an endless loop now - coming in, creating a crisis, then stating "this is a crisis", then making cuts that make a deeper crisis.
Mike should have Matt Elliot over again to talk about the huge clusterf*** that is coming our way, starting in November.

Walking to work the other week I came across a wallet on the ground. Of course, my first thought was it was a gag and looked for Allen Funt in the bushes, but he wasn't there because he's dead.

In it, along with credit cards, ID and other crap was precisely $180 in cash. Hmmm, I thought. I don't normally believe in superstition, but this time I'd make an exception because it was convenient and worked to my advantage - you see, it seemed awfully coincidental that I happened to be going to the New Order concert that night, and Jesus wouldn't want me to spend my own money on $14 beer right? RIGHT?

Alas, I contacted the guy and he came by my work to get the wallet. He offered me a reward, and I said..uh does 180 sound? I had him for a second, but then told him no worries. But then, he pulls out one of the cards from his just-returned wallet and he you have kids? Nope, I say. He then says he's a balloon animal artist on the side, and as he hands me his card I'm thinking he's trying to sell me balloon animal services. What a prick! But in reality, he was offering me FREE balloon animal services, you know, as my reward. He was quick to add "for an hour", which I thought was funny. I mean, if i ever needed a balloon animal guy, I'm thinking..maybe ten minutes would be a sufficient amount of time. So anyway, I'm thinking of having him come over some night and do his balloon animals in our bedroom while my wife and i are making whoopee. It wouldn't be weird or anything - i mean, he'd have his clothes on and stuff.

September 21, 2018 @ 11:07 AM

I'll come make balloon animals in your bedroom for 2 hours while you and your wife make whoopee

Is this a pants optional event ?

September 21, 2018 @ 11:19 AM

Maybe you can invite the balloon guy to TMXL 3!!
GLB Beer AND The Royal Pains AND Balloon Animals?!?!

September 21, 2018 @ 11:56 AM

@Ryan G

LOL. There are not enough stories involving balloon animal artists in the Toronto Mike realm. Thank you for fixing that! :) And as for that scenario with you and your wife, how would you stand that balloon twisting and squeaking/squealing sound? When two highly statically charged balloons rub together? Like nails on a chalkboard...

@ All

My Open Mike contribution for the day: I've been reading this morning about the data leak from retailer NCIX after their equipment was sold off following their bankruptcy and there's raw SQL server data there. :( Any tech geek will know this retailer shipping out of BC for system parts, accessories, etc.

Some good lessons about potentially creating a separate E-mail address for online orders, shipping it to a work location, using Paypal instead of direct credit card entry (or ensure there's a secure credit card processor agent that sends only a token to the retailer for the amount) or services that offer "virtual" card numbers (or for one-time use), etc. Or, just changing your credit card numbers/types regularly anyway.

Here's the original post, a mainstream news article about it and a reddit thread on it:

Some of you CFNY-types might remember a band from the early 90s called Therapy?. They had a pretty big hit with Nowhere, but songs like Screamager and Church of Noise would get play too.

They're still going and just released their 15th (!!) album, Cleave, and it's a banger. Highly recommended if you like hard rock/alternative. Clocks in at 32 minutes.

September 21, 2018 @ 12:32 PM

The TTC is advertising their express bus routes. While there are a small number of new ones, most of them are just renumbered, for example the Highway 27 express route was 191, but is now 927. And they're really more accurately described as semi-express, since they do make stops between the start and end of the route, but only at the designated stops, not on every block like local routes.
Since building dedicated bus-ways, as in Mississauga and some other places, is not practical where there's no room for them in Toronto, it would probably take more diamond lanes to make them more useful and avoid them being slowed down by all the surface traffic of cars with lone occupants.

September 21, 2018 @ 12:40 PM

I would gladly donate my complimentary balloon-animal service for TMXL3, whatever the hell that is. There's just a small administration fee of $180.

I'm kidding I know what TMXL3 is. Clearly you are referring to the Tomato Makers Exorcism League, now in it's 3rd year of play.

@Mike: I had the same feelings when my daughter gave up dance at 14-15 years old. She was good at it but wasn't interested in doing competitive which was the next age group/level. The house league of dance at her studio ended at that age group, which was too bad.

A huge thanks to an anonymous neighbour who retrieved my garbage can for me today. I came home and it was no where to be found, I walked up and down the street as if I was looking for a wayward pet. Miraculously at around 8 I found it on my porch. Earlier this year I was cursing said neighbours as a wind blown blue bin disappeared and never came back. I always thoroughly marker my address on these things, just for this situation.

@Ryan too funny, maybe he can make balloon animals of Donald Trumps, Stormy Daniels described body parts.

Anybody know where Suhana Marchand from CBC News is? She used to anchor from 10am-1pm weekdays on CBC News Network but I haven't seen her in about 3 months. She's still in promos. A couple years ago she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Her Twitter account hasn't been updated since May. I hope she's OK!

My wife is in Ottawa for the weekend babysitting our Grandkids as their parents are at a wedding in Vermont. The weather in Ott. is worse than TO & when I saw warnings of possible tornadoes in Vanier (Ottawa) I freaked out. Talked to Grandkids & wife earlier today & she said weather a lot better than this morning (B4 tornado warning). I called again late aft., early eve. 2-3 times & no answer. Freaking out. Finally she called back saying no major damage where she is but roads are closed with storm damage.

September 21, 2018 @ 9:43 PM

Well, Rogers is working. Now I'm using Rogers. My Internet is a lot faster. It's great. Anyway, the guy was here for a couple hours as he had to go in and out and to the cable room. Anyway, so I know I said I loved Primus and said I hated Rogers. Well, I don't want to pay for two things. Rogers is cheaper. I'll cancel Primus and keep Rogers. This internet is a lot faster. Well, my Indians blew it even though Josh Donaldson and Yan Gomes hit home runs. My Indians blew it though. That sucks. My Orioles and Diamondbacks also lost. This sucks.

September 22, 2018 @ 6:29 AM

My Indians won. That's great. My Orioles and Diamondbacks lost though. Ready for some football? My Browns already played on Thursday and won because they're the best, but today I need my Ravens and Cardinals to win. Well, I spoke too soon. I said Primus never puts people on hold. Well, I just canceled my Primus service. I was on hold for almost an hour. It sucked. The woman kept asking me some questions. She was slow. Finally, it got canceled. All these companies love putting people on hold. Well, Rogers is faster. I have faster internet now which is a good thing. I think I'm glad I switched.

September 23, 2018 @ 7:54 AM

Browns are the best? LMAO! first win since December 24 2016.

September 23, 2018 @ 3:37 PM

Primus vs. Rogers - now Rogers is better overall
Habs vs. Leafs - no question & time to change this also.

September 23, 2018 @ 4:40 PM

I lost all my respect for Tiger years ago when he had the world by the "Tiger Tail" but blew it with personal problems,

It sounds like Tiger was a lousy husband, but what a golfer! I can't think of a bigger comeback than this... I'm glad he rose from the ashes to win again.

September 23, 2018 @ 9:54 PM

My Indians won last night. That was a long game. I still hate it when pitchers take so long between pitches. My Orioles won as well, but my Diamondbacks lost. My Ravens won. That's great. My Cardinals almost won, but blew it in the end. When will my Cardinals win. Browns will be the best this year. I mean that this will be the year of the Browns. I'm going to get a Browns cake for the Superbowl party. Well, it will either be a Browns cake or Ravens cake I think. No, it's still Habs over Leafs. Just wait because my Habs are going to win with Carey Price back in full force. Remember the Price is right. Well, Rogers is better than Primus. I could have gotten Rogers a long time ago, but didn't. It's really quick. I have better quality phone as well. My phone is no longer hooked into the internet. Why did I say all those bad things about Rogers before? Who knows. They're great.

September 24, 2018 @ 7:10 AM

We picked the absolute best weekend to have our daughter home from University (Ottawa). We would have been a wreck worried about her during that storm. Mother nature is scary sometimes.

My daughter Morgan is 14 today!!!

September 24, 2018 @ 10:42 AM

We joked yesterday the more ladies he's dating, the better Tiger does LOL.
Horrible husband and boyfriend, good athlete indeed.

Meanwhile, Bruno Mars was AMAZING. Could have done a longer concert though...

Elton tomorrow night, and wrapping the year with Phil Collins in October.

September 24, 2018 @ 10:55 AM

Urooj Islam

If not being a serial cheater or adulterer is the bar for you to have respect for an entertainer and athlete then I assume you don't have any favourite athletes or actors/musicians.

September 24, 2018 @ 1:32 PM

James Edgar - Happy birthday to your babygirl!

Urooj Islam- is it too much to expect that athletes don't cheat ? or is it too much to expect them to be anything but very well paid humans who have the same faults we do? Tiger embarrassed his wife and kids and himself, and his career at the time for ? I'm not a golf fan but I can understand why people who were fans were turned off by his private life.

Meanwhile, I still saw Christopher Robin even though Ewan McGregor cheated on his wife of over 20 years. It always varies person to person!

September 24, 2018 @ 4:06 PM

Well, my Indians won again. Corey Kluber won his 20th game. That's great. My Orioles and Diamondbacks lost though. The stupid building is shutting off our water tomorrow morning during prime time 6:00 to 9:00 a.m. or maybe longer in my part of the building. The rest of the building will be off longer. Anyway, you never know. I could be without water even longer yet. I don't know why they have to shut it off during prime time. It's awful. Anyway, I got another bill from Primus. I got told the payment is received and then it said at the bottom that I have to pay it so I don't get it. I thought I was canceled. Well, I have to pay Primus and Rogers both this month. This is going to make me even poorer. Well, good news. Voting can be done in my home. I'm getting a home visit on October 10 at 10:00 so I can vote without leaving home. Someone will bring a ballot to me so I can vote. They should have started that a long time ago.

September 25, 2018 @ 7:11 AM

Please tell us you have money set aside for the World Series cakes.

September 25, 2018 @ 9:26 AM

@Urooj Islam

Exactly. I assumed that once Jim Bouton recounted his 1969 baseball season in the seminal "Ball Four" the days of fans naively assuming their heroes lived like saints off the field, court, or course died forever. Not to mention the sordid exploits of politicians of all parties and Hollywood stars. If bad character is a deal-breaker for fans, then the arenas and stadiums will be empty tonight.

September 25, 2018 @ 11:11 AM

Rob J

Sorry for back-to-back posts, but I thought it was interesting that the LA Kings are providing 'radio' play-by-play of their games this season only by way of online streaming through the iHeartRadio app and not over-the-air at all. This surely is a sign of things to come. This method also allows them to extend pre and postgame shows plus give fans access to the team's archives. (source: Awful Announcing)

Like many fans of my vintage (Gen X), I have fond memories of roaming the AM dial in search of hockey and baseball broadcasts in the middle of the night, but clearly an online option overrules the nostalgic feels, especially for fans of teams thousands of km away.

September 25, 2018 @ 8:57 PM

My Indians blew it. That's no good. They blew it. My Diamondbacks won though, but my Orioles got rained out. Well, they changed the water so the water went off at 7:00 last night until 11:00. It will go off again at 9:00 a.m., but in the other part of the building, so it won't affect me. Well, I talked to Primus again. They said they removed my credit card, but I have to wait for another bill. I got told to ignore this bill and wait for the next bill and then call to make a one time payment. They also put me on fricken hold yesterday as well. Now they're putting people on hold. I hate being put on hold, but everyone does it. Of course there is money for the cakes. My personal baker is really reasonable. He's great. Yes, my Indians will win the World Series.

September 26, 2018 @ 6:55 AM

Excellent news on the cakes!

I would be willing to purchase one with Toronto Mikes face on it for the party. Would your personal baker be willing to take liberties though with the icing, and add an Elvis like beard on Mike ?

September 26, 2018 @ 7:10 AM

Elton John was amazing!!!! 24 songs, just under 3 hours actually of pure concert.

Band was phenomenal, backing vocals were on point, it was heaven. I am so happy I got to see him. I'd go again tonight, if I had $$ and was not dead tired.

Only complaints - the sound of the instruments etc, drowned out Elton's vocals a bit (same with Bruno Mars on Sunday). Also, they opened the doors too late. They did not open them at 7, and so there was a huuuuuge lineup to get inside. Some asshole had the nerve to tell my sister come on time (because everyone had to get up to let her in, after we came in). And I hope a pigeon poops on him, jerk,

We were on time, but the lines were ridiculous. I've never waited so long at the ACC until this weekend. I'm hoping Phil Collins is a way better line up situation. Also, I cannot afford to buy swag because it's so expensive :'( no tshirt is worth $45. I'll wait until Bruno Mars finishes to see if his prices drop.

September 26, 2018 @ 9:58 AM

TM - honestly, it was amazing. My comment looks like I had more to complain about, but I really did not. I was just blown away by everything!! I got a little misty eyed too, it was just awesome to be there and listen to him and the band do their thing for almost 3 hours!!! I don't think anyone I've seen has done a 3 hour set, they usually have an opener. Even Hall and Oates didn't do 3 hours.

Amazing! I would see him again in a heartbeat.

September 26, 2018 @ 11:32 AM

This one goes out to the almighty Beatts for his impassioned email campaign to Toronto Mike
to get me to reverse my vasec...., I mean, posting retirement!! (So the displeased should blame him!!!).

Nearly two weeks ago I entered a comment that disturbed an infrequent commenter. His name
is not important and he is entitled to his beliefs, opinions and right to disagree and call me out
for humour he believed to be in poor taste. Perhaps, but he also felt the need to lecture me on
what is appropriate, with regards to suitable comedic subjects. Thanks, but no thanks. I humbly
suggest that you ignore all my future comments. Save your lectures/lessons for your students. I don't need or require them. I post here because it is a fun and open forum to share my thoughts, observations and, perhaps, often borderline/questionable attempts at satire. It's not for everyone
and I appreciate that. It was also suggested that any attempts at humour around my most-awkward ASD were also in poor taste. That WAS and IS still a bridge too far!!! My largely
dreadful existence is one that even the strongest of you out there would undoubtedly find
too painful to endure long-term (sober).. I'm not looking for handouts or sympathy or anything trite like that. I wasn't planning on posting on here for a long while, but I obviously failed to give
in to personal restraint, as is self-evident from today's copious amount of comments!!
In the immortal words of my spirit animal Demi Lovato, to any of the previous and sure to be
future offended readers, "Sorry Not Sorry!!!"

September 26, 2018 @ 11:38 AM

My god what have I done !

Joking :)

Glad to see you posting again. It would be nice though if you took the time to articulate and type more, instead of the usual one or two words answers we typically see from you..... ;)

I leave you with the fine words of noted Thespian Richard Gervais...

"Just because you're offended, doesn't mean you're right"

September 26, 2018 @ 11:46 AM

Sorry 'bout the brevity(!), it would appear that I don't only suffer from verbal diarrhea but also
that of the typing kind!!! And sadly, I'll never be right, 'cause I'm a naturally-born lefty. Perhaps there's
a good reason why that comedy thing never worked out?!?

September 26, 2018 @ 11:58 AM

Now now, no need to be a pronouncist!!! That's a hard word to pronounce!!
Wonder how he handles the word "JEWELRY?" (A word I struggle with immensely,

John Gibbons was extremely affable, and well liked by the fanbase, so I sure wouldn't bet against a third tour of duty at some point.

But personally, I never thought he was a particularly good baseball manager. .500 sounds about right. It was time to move on...

I bought one ticket this season, but it was in a section for my late buddy Kic and an annual thing. So I bought a ticket and sat in that section wearing his old Brett Lawrie jersey.

I love playoff baseball, and when I see Edwin and Josh coming through for Cleveland, I'l wonder if something smells there... because the optics are shite. Both players seemed to end up in Cleveland thanks to the ineptness from the Jays front office. If it was any other team.... but it's not. It's Cleveland. Hmmmmmm....

September 26, 2018 @ 7:50 PM

Rob J

I'm with you on playoff baseball, especially with the excitement of the single elimination wildcard games next week (though the traditionalist in me winces a little), not to mention the real chance of a game 163 on Monday for the NL West crown which would involve the Rockies. The AL was tremendously top-heavy this season, but who can quibble with the star-power of the contenders, plus the amazin' A's becoming the first team in 30 years to make the playoffs with the league's lowest payroll. In the NL, the resurgent Braves and Brewers were big deals, while the rapid falls of the Expos-Nats and Diamondbacks were unexpected, and the Cubs have picked an odd time to flail, putting their division title in jeopardy. (Yes, there is one team I'm omitting, because though I don't believe in jinxes, I don't want to force fate's hand).

September 26, 2018 @ 8:07 PM

John Gibbons is a testament to how far being well-liked can take you.

Can he manage? I have no idea. All I know is that his record is pretty mediocre considering the combined length of his multiple tenures (almost 10 seasons worth of games managed) with the Blue Jays. It's kind of shocking that he managed as long as he did when you look at how little overall success the team had with him.

Last time the Blue Jays fired him in 2008, he couldn't even get an interview with another team for a managerial job. I think it is just the former Blue Jays braintrust (ie JP Ricciardi and his cronies starting with AA) and the Toronto baseball media (Wilner, Griffin, Elliot, etc.) who were just infatuated with him and convinced the fans to feel that way as well. His managing certainly didn't warrant the type of praise people throw his way.

I am excited to finally move on and build something not in some way connecting to the JP Ricciardi, Alex Anthopoulos/John Gibbons triumvirate which has basically dictated this franchise's course this century.

September 26, 2018 @ 8:41 PM

Well, my Indians won last night. That was a great win by Shane Beber. Awesome. Homers by Franky Lindor and Edwin Encarnacion. My Diamondbacks and Orioles won as well. You'll get the party invitations when the World Series is over and my Indians win it. You'll know where it is. Why do you want an Elvis cake? This party is for my Indians. They're winning it. When you log into my Rogers, there are stupid capchas. Why do we need capchas anyway? I have no idea. I hate them. My internet is a lot faster though and I have better quality phone service. Every company will put me on hold.

September 27, 2018 @ 6:40 AM

Cheryl the capchas are necessary for preventing the robot's from taking over the world.

You're not a robot, right?

And who wouldn't want an Elvis cake? To clarify though I want a Toronto Mike cake that has an Elvis like beard. I'm willing to purchase this. I plan on paying for it using PayTM. That way when I use the TorontoMike code, I'll get $10 off my purchase. It's like Mike is buying his own cake. It's genius.

Semi-innocent question from an Aspie on a very slow and low Jeudi morning. In Tone Loc's
landmark second single from 1989, "Funky Cold Medina" he makes it very clear that 'it is the '80s
and that he ain't got no plans with a man and that he's down with the ladies.' Just wondering, but
did those lyrics potentially leave the door open for some sexual experimentation, on his part, in subsequent decades? N.B.: Not askin' 'cause I'm "personally" interested in him, just a somewhat rhetorical question from a fella who tends to take things literally. Hope no one ever tells me to go jump in a lake or to drop dead, 'cause either way, that would surely be the death of me fer sure!!! Quick Wiki update: This tune's lyrics were written by the under-appreciated Young MC, so perhaps Marvin Young might be a better person to direct this particularly long-overdue query towards?!?

September 27, 2018 @ 10:41 AM

Elton john will be coming back to Toronto for two more concerts next October.
So you will hopefully have another chance to see him again. The tickets go on sale

I was going to ignore the joke you made, but for some reason I just couldn't, and felt the need to comment on it.
