Baseball sucked last night. That's no good. My Orioles lost another one and my Diamondbacks lost another one. My beloved Indians had the day off. Anyway, my Jose is player of the month for July. My Jose is wonderful. I hope he can come to my party. Well, it's a couple months away. It's the first Saturday right after the World Series. I found someone who will make a Chief Wahoo cake. The cake will be so awesome. It's going to be a blast. My trainer had his surgery yesterday. He says he can't do much these few days. I hope he's better by Tuesday when I see him again. It's not major but he still has to take it easy. He didn't absolutely have to have it, but he wanted to have it. I will never ever have surgery unless it's absolutely necessary.

I nominate Toronto Mike'd as the new Edge morning show.

It's Friday!

What crazy DoFo announcement will happen today?

I am waiting for the cancellation of public sector pensions. Or he will cut educational assistants. Maybe he will make a healthcare sector cut today.

Re: A certain somebody's forthcoming Cleveland World Series Party announcement, as my main musical prophet Prince once sang on his 1990 "Graffiti Bridge" soundtrack, there is 'JOY IN REPETITION!!!" A little early to be planning such a victory party, isn't it? Me, I'm looking much more forward to the party in which another O-Fer season for the Cleveland Browns is commemorated with the ceremonial drinking of left over punch from the infamous Heaven's Gate cult's 'going-away-party' and the communal-ripping up of a season's worth of useless Pro-Line forms!! Now that will be a party (gonna go listen to some Irish Rovers now).

Public service announcement: As the self-designated, unofficial Library and Fast Food Joints
correspondent for this site, happy to report that the Burger King at King and Dufferin has
finally done something about their compromised drink station situation. Now, there is only one
soda machine but it is seemingly brand new and it also features an ice dispenser that is
fully stocked and ready to serve!! There is also a separate machine from which ice tea and
lemonade are available. Bonus, the satellite radio is still tuned to that all-seventies station.
Regrettably, the food is no tastier or healthier than previous visits. Death on an installment
plan, baby!!

And for anyone looking for suitable family entertainment this weekend, I checked out the advance
screening of that new "Christopher Robin" flick the other night and can attest that it is well worth
the cost of admission, Granted, easy for me to say as I saw it for free, but any film in which Ewan
McGregor keeps his kit on and doesn't display his Lightsaber is obviously a keeper for the ages!!
Sadly, Eeyore is still in grave need of some Paxil or a double dose of Prozac!!! And, yes, I did
manage to produce some waterworks during the film, but that might have been due to a too-
tight Hernia Truss.

Subject: Transit crisis looming--

I'm glad the Eglinton Cross-town is being built, but I've noticed that there are condos going up beside or across from almost every new station. That means that once the LRT is up and running it will be at full capacity as soon as it opens. Plus, it'll be draining into the subway which already can't handle the volume it has. . The Relief Line is coming(so they say), but even if they started building tomorrow it'll be 10 years before it's completed.
I don't think this transit situation is going to end well.

August 3, 2018 @ 9:50 AM

Hi Mike - wondering if you could drop me a line to my email?
Don’t want to waste other people’s time here.

August 3, 2018 @ 10:08 AM

Rick C in Oakville

@susan, good observations, transit will never catch up, Toronto grid lock is never going away, and if they don't do the relief line, I wonder how long before companies maybe start pulling out of the core.
I saw an article in the Globe today about contractors in Vancouver refusing to work in the city, as it is taking 4 hours round trip just to get the labour in and out.
My 1st world problem today will be getting across Toronto at 2pm to head to my sisters cottage in Bancroft. I think I will take the 407 (about $40) and consider it the cost of time savings.

Excited to be attending the Food Truck Festival this evening and watching previous Toronto
Mike'd guest Barry Davis and his "We Ain't Petty" tribute act in performance between 7:30
and 9:30. I checked out some footage of them online and it was quite impressive. And
presumably lots of great (if over-priced food) available as well!! The Lake Shore Mardi Gras
is also on this weekend and tomorrow night features 54-40 and Rik Emmett on Sunday, both
at 9 PM (Colonel Samuel Smith Park).

August 3, 2018 @ 10:34 AM

Oh, the Food Truck Festival takes place at Woodbine Park in the Beaches.

August 3, 2018 @ 10:37 AM

I went to the Food Truck Festival once before. I was really underwhelmed with the choices. I was hoping for some fantastic food and it was all just "okay". Nothing stood out and I left really disappointed. And yes, it was the one at Woodbine Park.

But...maybe I just don't care for Food Trucks! Or I have been fooled by the TV versions.

August 3, 2018 @ 11:18 AM

I'm waiting to hear what laughably idiotic justification will be given to avoid building the relief line and instead extend the Yonge subway to Richmond Hill. Yes, let's not fix the flooding, but make it worse by adding more input upstream.

Well, the jays were definitely sellers at the trade deadline. I have a feeling we are going back into the dark ages for a
few years. My sports watching has been spotty at best the last decade or so. I used to be an avid fan of the jays and Leafs, but I am far more bandwagon these days.

August 3, 2018 @ 1:28 PM

Urooj Islam

The Jays set themselves back at least a couple of years by not starting the rebuild in the off-season. All their assets had much higher trade value but for whatever reason, they thought they could compete for the postseason in 2018.

Very delusional front office and organization.

5 thoughts for a Friday of a long weekend

Osana gone & predict again Tulo & Josh D will never play againg for BJays. Shapiro & Atkins as everyone slams them, they are smart as years ago Cleveland was a terrible team & yet 2 years later contenders for World Series. Give them time & will be fine.

Forest fires in Noth Ont. - my sis in law was evacuated (just N of Parry Sound) last night. Seeing now fires are somewhat subsided.

We in GTA need it to pour rain for a couple of days as everything is dry not like last years with the rain constant & flooding Totonto Islands. Global Warming?

Changes to 102 & Lesser Q radio. Why is Derringer still there. A stale & mouldy muffin & Jenn. V. also

Hopefully all goes well this weekend with Caribean Festival whithout any violence.

Have a great long weekend all

I came by to let you know about my new tour dates - as a travelin' man, it is important to get back out and see all those folks who missed out when I had to cancel. No Canadian dates though - I would love to play that CNE Grandstand again, but it seems like years since this beautiful loser played some old time rock and roll there by the lake! Is it still the same? Anyways, still would love to kick up some hams with Toronto Mike, if he invites me. It's just a few hours up the road from D-town, not like I would have to go to Katmandu or something. Let me know. Bob.

August 3, 2018 @ 11:17 PM

Previous comment should have been Johnny Interception.

August 3, 2018 @ 11:45 PM

@andrew - Johnny Football (Jean du Football now) was thrown into a no-win situation. Montreal is a slow-motion train wreck this year, no o-line, poorly coached, and he has only had what, four practices with the team? He will be a good QB if he is given the time to figure it out (and a bit of a supporting cast).

August 4, 2018 @ 7:21 AM

Baseball sucked last night except my Diamondbacks won. That's good, but my Indians and Orioles lost which really sucks. Well, my Orioles are really sucking, but my Indians need to win. Browns will do better this year. My Browns, Ravens, or Cardinals will win the superbowl. I read an article about the surgery my trainer had. It's risky. People had it before and had problems in the end. Hope my trainer won't have problems. It's risky though. Sometimes the problems come later after. There's chronic pain. This is only a guy thing, but I would never ever have surgery unless I really needed it and there was no other choice. Surgery is risky no matter what it is. I know there is cosmetic surgery. People who have it are wasting their time I think anyway. Did Bob Seger really post here? I can't believe it.

@ Sid V, 100 % agreed. Aaron Rogers sat on the sidelines for 3 years behind Farve before he got a start. Manziel got thrown after 4 practices on really shitty football team. I believe he will be really good CFL quarterback..

the dude can juke

I'll give Johnny Football this; the dude can juke! On several plays he slipped multiple tackles & should have been sacked.

Give the guy some time; hopefully he can learn to exploit his skills which seem to favour the CFL game.

About 10 or 12 years ago someone I knew gave me a NASA cap after they returned from a trip to Florida (still have it but rarely wear it).

I recall walking along Bloor Street and going past a guy standing in a doorway smoking and hearing him say "pfft -- NASA?", in a way that he sounded like he might have wanted to add, "fuckin' nerd".
In the last few weeks, it seems like every day I see two or three people wearing something with one of the logos on it. Has it recently become some strange kind of minor trend with some store here selling it?

August 4, 2018 @ 6:47 PM

My Indians won. That's great. Corey Kluber pitched a gem. He will be at my party as well. Leonys Martin hit a home run. That's great. Well, my Diamondbacks won as well. See, my Indians and Diamondbacks will win the World Series. They're going to make a Chief Wahoo cake just for me. It's going to be awesome. I found a place who will do it. First Saturday after the World Series. Party starts at noon and ends whenever. My Orioles lost again though. They keep sucking. Well, hopefully my trainer is okay. He's probably just resting recovering. Any surgery is risky no matter what it is. If I can avoid surgery, I will.

August 5, 2018 @ 7:29 AM

No comments after I last posted. Oh well, guess nobody wanted to comment. My Indians won yesterday. That was close though. My Jose had a beautiful homer. He's so awesome. I love my Jose so much. As I said, there are lots of baseball players named Jose, but only one is my Jose, and that's Jose Ramirez. He should post here. I love him. My Orioles won as well. That's good, but they won't make it. My Diamondbacks lost though. That was no good. Well, hopefully my trainer is doing okay. I don't believe in surgery unless it's really necessary if there is absolutely no way out. I never even had my ears pierced. I don't want that. That's unnecessary surgery to have that done and I won't do it.

@ Cheryl Looking forward to your free after World Series party. Just a heads -up to help you plan;
- beer- I enjoy Coors light and Heineken
- J&B scotch (lots of ice)
- Lobster (large/meaty ) pork fried rice
- Black forest cupcakes
- free Uber there & back home
- large 'doggie' bags
- No Excuses

August 7, 2018 @ 4:09 AM

Boy, someone is demanding about my party. Lobster, yuck. I could probably get the beer, but scotch? You get drunk and everyone barfs and then how will I clean it up. We're not having black forest cupcakes. I special ordered a Chief Wahoo cake. You have to eat Chief Wahoo cake. My Indians won big last night. Yes, Trevor Bauer pitched a gem. Lots of homers by Yonder Alonso, Brandon Guyer, Jason Kipnis, and Edwin Encarnacion. That's so awesome. My Diamondbacks won as well. Well, my trainer should be okay to see me today. I hope so.

August 7, 2018 @ 9:02 AM

Had a rare rock & roll weekend as I saw at least 7 full band performances between Friday and
Sunday nights. I caught the "We Ain't Petty" tribute act at Woodbine Park on Friday and they
were really great. On Saturday night I also saw 54-40 at Col. Sam Smith Park and having never
witnessed them live before I was very impressed. A hits-laden set and they even left plenty
of radio 'hits' off the setlist. Now that's when you know a band has legs!! On Sunday, at the
same venue, I caught Rik Emmett and while it was great to hear plenty of classic Triumph cuts,
something seemed a little off. His band were more musically accomplished than his two former
bandmates, but that isn't exactly what that kind of music calls for. Plus, he refused to meet and
greet afterwards and my friend One-Leg was beyond pissed as he dug up some classic vinyl
for the occasion. On the other hand, the revelation of the day was a local cover band named
Groovestone, They performed a very eclectic list of songs and their drummer was a percussive
beast. A lot of unsung musical talent out there so it was great to get a chance to see a lot of it
in one place.

August 7, 2018 @ 10:04 AM

Coming back to work after a week off is rough - I am a mess. My costume is not being posted here LOL, but if you follow TM on Twitter well you can see it there :)

Enough interest I'll be coming for the 20 a pop pictures :)

August 7, 2018 @ 10:12 AM

Very nice costume! Nothing to be ashamed about!!I saw some ladies on the TTC on Saturday
whose costumes made dental floss look bulky. Not complainin' 'bout the cheap thrill most
obviously not meant for my eyes, but definitely not something you see very often, at least
in public!!

August 7, 2018 @ 10:30 AM

bsmntdwllr73 - thank you!!! no shame here :)! yes, some costumes have less material than others, but the ladies sure do make them all look so good. i used to TTC it in when I was younger, now I Take The Car :D

Requesting permission to post your picture in these comments and promote your appearance at the next Toronto Mike'd Listener Experience on September 12.

August 7, 2018 @ 12:14 PM

Was warned off ever learning to drive at the age of 12 by an astute eye specialist, so it basically
comes down to going by foot or taking the Toronto Trainwreck Commission. Those attractive costumed ladies were an added visual bonus on a very humid and jam-packed TTC on Saturday!

August 7, 2018 @ 12:35 PM

bsmntdwllr73 - I have no depth perception, so I cannot fly planes or pour out a full cup of liquid or judge the distance when i park my car, but i can drive. you're not missing too much by not driving but it has its advantages. every woman in costume is beautiful so i am glad you saw the masqueraders!

TM - you can post it here, but I won't promise to be there on the 12th LOL. SO the first part of my picture here is a go!

August 7, 2018 @ 1:29 PM

Totally thankful that I didn't run into any dudes letting it all hang out in their respective costumes(!),
but then again, the ladies also deserve a chance to look at some attractive eye candy as well!! Not
trying to be overly-self-deprecating (um, perhaps?!), but I tend to err on the side of caution and to
always be sure to wear more clothing than is probably necessary!! Also, I wear a sleep mask in the shower, LOL!!!

As for the next GLB event, you should definitely make an effort to come! I wasn't exactly overly-
social the last time as such gatherings aren't in my comfort zone, but you seem like you would
be a very nice person to talk to/with. And I promise that I will make you laugh at loud at least twice!!

August 7, 2018 @ 1:37 PM

Ugh, obviously meant 'laugh out loud' above!

August 7, 2018 @ 1:38 PM

bsmntdwllr73 - The men's costumes are not as elaborate, but they can show off quite a bit too. Some men and women opt to wear more, or less depending on the comfort level. it's a day for everyone to come out and enjoy and celebrate, no judgement!

i am a super social person, i may come, everyone here seems nice yourself included! we probably would share some good laughs!

August 7, 2018 @ 1:45 PM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

In addition to The Royal Pains there will be a performance by Splash'N Boots on September 12 at GLB.

August 7, 2018 @ 1:52 PM

I'd personally be more comfortable participating in any festival event that had a costume component
in more arctic temperatures!! Wouldn't be worried too much about other folks' judgments as I would
be too busy worrying about the internal dissent within!! Halloween always caused me endless self-
doubt, and in those younger days alleged (self-) body-shaming had little to do with it!! As for the
next GLB event, as a non-consumer of alcohol, the (self-imposed)lack of that often freeing social lubricant might have a lot to do with my awkwardness in such scenarios. Nursing a water or a pop
isn't exactly the same thing, especially when you're (ME!!) not exactly cut out for group get-togethers.

August 7, 2018 @ 1:54 PM

Will there be a special kid zone with a chocolate milk station for any children who show up
for the Splash 'N Boots evening performance? I'm only asking 'cause chocolate milk is much
more my personal speed!!

@Toronto Mike

Good to know!

I was really disappointed by that episode with his wife and how he went out of his way not to do the impression. It was almost like his wife briefed him about how they are going to go talk about some serious issues (Gamergate and all that stuff) so he couldn't do the character.

August 7, 2018 @ 2:18 PM

Ed the Sock definitely needs to come back alone to Kick Out the Jams, so that the content is
pure, unadulterated and not overly P.C.. Glad that the Sock's portrayer found his suitable real-
life-mate, but the unabashed 3% caveman within me much preferred the old school version
of the character.

To clarify, SplashN'Boots will not be performing their children's set. Their playlist matches up well with The Royal Pains.

August 7, 2018 @ 3:26 PM

No, I already figured that out based on their enthusiasm around the first event when it came
up during their KOTJ episode! But their attendance might inspire some folks to bring their
kids as well, hence my chocolate milk spit-balling!!

August 7, 2018 @ 5:36 PM

Well, that game sucked last night. Actually, they all sucked. My Indians had a big long rain delay. All stadiums should have roofs. The thing is that baseball is so unpredictable. You never know when there is a rain delay. It just happens, and you never know how long it is. Last night it was very long. My Indians never do well in rain delays. They lost again even though Franky Lindor did hit a home run. My Orioles and Diamondbacks also lost. Well, all stadiums need roofs. That should be a necessity.

In other small town news, caught Laura Branigan's 1982 hit "Gloria" on Boom earlier this morning

Apropos of nothing, if I'm ever able to finally afford to join the 20th (21st now, I guess, century!),
I hope to finally be able to secure a cellphone and select a most De rigueur ringtone. Current
leading contenders are that long-forgotten Cancon (and very applicable, in my case!!) classic
"Where Loneliness Lives"by Mae Moore or, better yet, perhaps ""You Make Me Feel Like a Whore"by Everclear. Frankly, it's a very tough and, as yet, a mostly hypothetical decision for me to ponder in my not-so-sweet Basement of Solitude!!

August 9, 2018 @ 11:58 AM

A lot of talk on here today in another thread about the Smashing Pumpkins. A very undersung
band from a little later in that same particular era is Local H. A guitar and drums duo in which
the guitarist had a special rig through which he also played bass parts simultaneously (somewhat
similar to noted 8-string jazz guitarist Charlie Hunter, but I digress). Their best known tracks would
include "Bound for the Floor", "Eddie Vedder", "All the Kids are Right", and perhaps "Cool Magnet",
which featured some spectacular guest guitar work from Dean DeLeo of STP. Apparently they
are still a going concern under the leadership of the original vocalist/guitarist, but with a fully-
fleshed out four-piece line-up. Well worth exploring online for the uninitiated who are into that
kind of thing.
