It was nine years ago today that Martin Streek took his life.

Here's what I wrote on that day:

Tonight, a dear friend of Marty's will visit me to kick out the jams in his honour.

July 6, 2018 @ 7:56 AM

TGIF - stay hydrated and safe everyone!

July 6, 2018 @ 8:09 AM

That's very cool Mike.

Actually today is a wee bit chilly. I have no AC in my apartment, but the lower temperatures and the box fans blowing air in from two windows REALLY cooled things down overnight. But even outside in the sun, the wind has picked up a bit.

July 6, 2018 @ 8:38 AM

I'm not first. I had trouble finding this open mike. Well, baseball sucked last night. My Orioles lost to the stinking Twins. That is no good. My Diamondbacks also lost. My Indians had the day off. Well, I hope they will all win today. I know that the World Series will be great. My Indians and Diamondbacks will be there. I am looking forward to it.

Terrible news about Elvis Costello battling aggressive cancer.

The heat wave seems to have broken so I can finally open up some windows and let the breeze in.

July 6, 2018 @ 8:51 AM

@Toronto Mike,

I hope to hear some KMFDM, Thrill Kill Kult and Fools Gold by the Stone Roses :)

I tried to break my packrat tendencies around ten years ago, and totally threw out a cassette recording of one of Streek's live-to-airs from the mid-90s. Found that disappointing when he was no longer with us.

July 6, 2018 @ 8:53 AM

Curious about something here:

Months ago when Patrick Brown was accused of inappropriate sexual behavior, many of the people on this blog were calling for his head (and rightfully so if he was found guilty). I have searched this blog and not found one instance of those same people calling for Mr. Trudeau to step down due to the accusations leveled against him, no one here questioning the half hearted denial/ "I don't remember" from this bastion of feminism.

Just curious where all of these outraged people went....

July 6, 2018 @ 9:20 AM

I'm too busy heading to the nearest cold shower in order to get that just released video of a shirtless
Justin Trudeau jogging around Cherry Beach out of my head!! Thank the lucky stars and garters
that there will never be video released of Donald Trump doing the same thing. Topless mass
consumption of Mickey D's or The Colonel, perhaps?!? Ya know, something completely demure
and tasteful, like that all-time-classic Drunk David Hasselhoff losing a battle with a hamburger video!!

Wasn't aware of that terrible Elvis Costello news before reading it on here moments ago. I
did find out elsewhere that he has a new rock album coming out in a couple of months so
that was somewhat more consoling news.

July 6, 2018 @ 9:35 AM

Happy Friday all.
VERY glad the heatwave has subsided. I have had to drive more than ride the last week or so simply too exhausting if i got stuck in traffic at all ( I'm not one of those T shirt, shorts and flip flop types , It's already a risk just riding . Mitigating that risk with gear is important IMHO)

And I'm doing an all day ride with my riding club for a charity and then i have to head from Toronto to Huntsville ASAP for a family function. Not sure i could have puled that off in the worst of the weather this week. But tomorrow should be perfect.

Spent a half hour on the balcony watching the lightning and rain last night quite a show and the weird orange glow after was amazing .

Bad news about Elvis :(

As for Trudeau while not calling for his head just yet ( i don't recall calling for browns either for that matter) I for one would like better answers . He Mansplained yesterday which is unacceptable in my opinion.

July 6, 2018 @ 10:05 AM

Who were these "many people" here calling for Patrick Brown's head? I did a search and wasn't able to find much. He was ousted by an internal revolt within the Ontario PC party, not by something from the outside, where almost no one had ever heard of the alleged inappropriate behaviour.

July 6, 2018 @ 11:02 AM

@ H.O.E - go back and look at the Open Mike's at the time the accusations came out. Some of our more left leaning friends in here were very vocal about the accusations.

Just for the record, I voted NDP in the past election, so this isn't a Pro-PC troll thing here...

July 6, 2018 @ 11:52 AM

I think the difference is that we have no idea what took place. The woman isn’t talking and she wasn’t an employee or anything similar.

Patrick Brown has two women complain on TV with a lot of details of what took place.

Maybe she’ll talk and my opinion will change. But it’s hard to ask someone to resign when you have no idea what took place.

July 6, 2018 @ 12:00 PM

@McNulty - I hear you, and perhaps a call for resignation is a little much at this point is simply that there are some people on here (not you specifically) that would defend JT as hard as the idiots to the south defend Trump when stuff like this comes out about him.

If a similar story had come out about a right wing politician (lets say Andrew Scheer for example), there are people on here that would be screaming for said politicians head (again, not saying you specifically).

My point is that we are becoming a country of identity politics and that scares me....

July 6, 2018 @ 12:09 PM

Like I said, I did a Google search for "Patrick Brown" for, and was not able to find all these "many people" demanding that he quit. Please provide the link.
The accusations against Brown didn't become public knowledge until the night the Ontario PC party internal revolt ousted him.

July 6, 2018 @ 12:15 PM

@HOE - Mike didn't do a specific post about Brown, that's why your search revealed nothing. As I said, If you look at the open Mike's from the time, you will see what I'm talking about.

I really have no desire to go through the posts to find you a link....

Once again, this isn't about proving some "Pro-PC" or "Anti Liberal Party" point. It's more about the U.S.A.-like Identity politics that are showing up in Canada. This is the same reason why Doug Ford won the election when anyone with a modicum of common sense could see he's not the right guy for the job.

Such politics scare me because it's more about "my side winning" then what is best for the people of the country/province/city. People from both sides of the spectrum need to focus more on what's best for all of us then winning political points.

July 6, 2018 @ 12:22 PM

Then I have no desire to comment about situations that exist entirely within your own imagination.

July 6, 2018 @ 12:26 PM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

All the comments about Patrick Brown are in this Open Mike:

There aren't very many, and most seem pretty reasonable. I see Philly-Bob was blaming the Liberal Party for Brown's removal. :)

July 6, 2018 @ 12:27 PM

@ Mike - was I?? That doesn't sound like me at all (he said with a sly grin). And I'm not saying the points people made about Brown weren't valid, in fact I said as much at the time...I'm just pointing out that no such points are being made now that the person in question is a left-leaning politician.

It isn't the Liberal Party I have a problem with, it's JT specifically....I just don't think he's a good leader. And the provincial Libs deserve what's happening to them now...they created their own mess.

@HOE - If you think the wave of identity politics in this country exists in my head, then yup, there's no point continuing this conversation with you. As someone who sits firmly in the middle, I'm a fiscal conservative, but a social Liberal, I worry when people care more about their side winning then doing whats best for all of us.

BTW - an example of being a fiscal conservative but a social liberal - I have no problem whatsoever with a single mother needing help to pay for school/life while she betters herself in college, she will hopefully finish that program and be able to provide a better life while contributing to society. But I have a huge problem with our tax dollars paying for drug dealers to live in TCHC buildings.

July 6, 2018 @ 1:02 PM

Ben V

This all stems from Philly Bob's hate of Trudeau and the hyperbole he loves to use when farting on Trudeau. I'm still waiting for the sky to fall like he proclaimed would happen if the Trudeau and the liberals took power again. Last check June added more jobs once again to the economy

Hardly anyone talked about Patrick Brown, because A there was credible witnesses B there was a history there C his own party carved him and spit him out. The liberals and the left DID NONE OF THAT.

For Trudeau this story is a nothing burger. It was already printed years ago. The only reason it got any traction in the last two weeks was because of Breitbart "news" He wasn't a politician at the time, he wasn't a boss trying to coerce employees into anything.

What bothered me more is that he should have addressed this a couple days ago vs last night. I didn't feel last night was man-splaining. He articulated that how a man sees something can be very different from a woman. Does not mean either is right or wrong. He didn't feel he did anything wrong at the time, but this person did so he apologised. There is no history of this or no indication of this type of behaviour throughout the years. He didn't try to tear down the witness or malign what happened. Is there something more people wanted? For him to call her a liar?

Ultimately the people who liked trudeau before still will and those who hated him before will hate him the same amount. If there is a trail of women that he did this to or there was indication of a history of it then I'm all for taking him down.

This is a nothing burger story wrapped up in the fact the conservatives failed miserably to try and criticise him when trump started going off with tariffs so they felt this was their story.

Shame on that conservative troll Michelle Rempel for the insinuation this was somehow a Harvey Weinstein situation.

July 6, 2018 @ 1:08 PM

Ben V

Something to shit on is the race baiting already happening with our new provincial government and asylum seekers. @#$@ you Doug Ford, stealing a page from the Trump Handbook. I do love how Trudeau had to explain Doug(completely unqualified to be in government) how the refugee and asylum program works.

July 6, 2018 @ 1:20 PM

"many of the people on this blog were calling for his head"
-That is the fiction that exists only in your imagination. The general public like us had no idea there even were any such allegations against him, until the story broke about that night the Ontario PC ousted him.

I love thunder storms too. We were supposed to get some last weekend, some yesterday, never got nothing. We were actually under severe thunderstorm warnings a few times...but nothing. Fuckin bullshit.

July 6, 2018 @ 8:16 PM

Blind Dave

@Axel - Yeah, I love thunderstorms too, but unfortunately they scare the hell out of my cats.

I didn't know about Elvis Costello battling cancer. Wishing him all the best. My intro to him would have been 1979's "Armed Forces" and I saw the video on the Kenny Everett Video Show.

It's a heater on the prairies too, a delightful 35C today. I'm loving it. My Lovely is a bit on the cranky side, though.

July 6, 2018 @ 8:22 PM

I just saw on CP24 the statement from the woman involved in this story. He apologized the day after and she was satisfied.

I withdrawal my complaint, we've all made bad calls in our 20s. I still don't like the man, but if the victim is satisfied, who am I to say otjerwise.

@Ben - Ford is a buffoon plain and simple. Much like Trump he likes the idea of being in charge, but has no scope of the duty and responsibility to the people you represent. He thinks he's our boss, when it's actually the other way around.

July 6, 2018 @ 11:11 PM

My Indians won. That's great. Carlos Carrasco was shaky at the start giving up a couple homers, but my Indians came through and won. My Diamondbacks also won. Yes, they're both going to the World Series. My Orioles lost again. That's no good, but my Orioles won't be in the World Series. Yes, really beautiful weather. If my trainer was here yesterday, I could have done some exercise outside, but he just comes Tuesdays and Thursdays. Well, I'll take extreme heat over ice and snow any day.

July 7, 2018 @ 6:18 AM

Sad news: Steve Ditko, the co-creator of Spider-Man and Doctor Strange, has passed away
at the age of 90. Although I found his artwork to be somewhat primitive and with most of
the characters resembling very underfed (vaguely) Eastern European peasants; regardless, he
was obviously very important and influential to multiple generations of artists. Don't think that
he ever fully received the full recognition or financial compensation that he deserved.
From the sounds of things, it seems like Stan Lee will probably follow closely on his heels.

July 7, 2018 @ 1:17 PM

bsmntdwllr - I think now more people will talk about the actual contribution that Ditko brought to the comic world as with the news of his passing the depth of his work has been brought to light. It is interesting since there is debate within some of the comic book community about Stan Lee and how much credit he does and doesn't take for Spider-man, Doctor Strange, et all as opposed to how it was pretty much a 50/50 split between him and Ditko on things.

He was also one of those comic people that seems to have just faded into the background when his time was done and not stayed in the spotlight a-la Stan Lee.

July 7, 2018 @ 3:00 PM

Urooj Islam

It's such a depressing industry to go back and read about.

Rarely is anyone given their proper due and or respective credit/financial compensation and when they are, they are given a disproportionate amount of the credit ie Stan Lee and Bob Kane.

It wouldn't surprise me if Spider-Man is the most valuable superhero property now with how Superman and Batman have been mismanaged recently.

RIP Steve Ditko!

July 7, 2018 @ 3:10 PM

Stan Lee was definitely a genius and a giant of comics in his prime, but he had many of the same
creative and financial issues with his other great collaborator, Jack Kirby. It is sad to see what has
become of Mr. Lee, especially since his wife passed away. Not a week goes by where he isn't
in the news for some non-comic book related matter. Hopefully Mr. Ditko's contributions will
get some more of their overdue recognition in the coming weeks and days. He appeared to be
a very private man right up to the end, but this might have had a lot to do with how he
was treated by the mainstream comics industry. Forgot to earlier mention his great work
at Charlton Comics in the late '60s right up through the '70s.

July 7, 2018 @ 3:14 PM

@Urooj Islam
Apparently Mr. Ditko started to receive some financial compensation at some point during
the Marvel Movies Renaissance. Although I strongly feel that Doctor Strange was handled
in a more mature manner than the last three horrible Spider-Man flicks.

July 7, 2018 @ 3:17 PM

No Aunt Harriet sitting behind the ump at home plate at the Blue Jay game today.
Guessing the kids just put sunscreen on her, sat her at the kitchen table and had her sign blank cheques and every two minutes said to her "hey mom that was a good play by Doug Ault " she would shake her head yes and continue signing, just clueless.

July 7, 2018 @ 10:10 PM

I'm just A Girl

. I still don't think its a story. Yes, it's an unfortunate incident and yes, it shouldn't have happened because yes, it was inappropriate. But it wasn't assault and it wasn't malicious. It was also an incident in which the woman involved felt it was inappropriate and clearly confronted the accused about it, which we know without knowing, because she got an apology. The next day I might add, which is a hell of lot faster than 18 years later and a lot sooner than the women speaking out now in other cases are getting from their accused.

The #metoo and #timesup movements aren't about making men pay, they are about women speaking their truth about their experiences and the harassment and worse they experience without consequence. The story about Trudeau isn't that, notably because she, the actual person involved, stated she didn't want to be contacted, didn't want it brought up, doesn't want to be involved. She asked that her experience be left alone. And what happened? The opposite. Instead, all these journalists and sudden defenders of women came out demanding more from her. Speak out, comment for our story, make it a bigger deal for US and not for you.

That is my problem with this incident. Yes Trudeau should've commented earlier and with a better statement than he eventually made. But that ISN'T the issue. The issue now is that because of pressure from everyone outside of this story that have been weak and passive in incidents previously are more zealous in their approach to making this a story and accusing anyone that doesn't see this as The Worst Incident and Trudeau as Another Male Predator as highly partisan and anti-women and a leftist apologist. The issue is because of these so-called allies of women (so convenient), she was forced into the story against her express wishes to be left alone and she felt pressured to name herself. She didnt come forward, others took it from her. That is the opposite of being an ally in this, it's the opposite of #metoo and its absolutely the worst hypocrisy for everyone still trying to push for Trudeau to be named another Weinstein.

You can't initiate an investigation because the complainant doesn't want to be involved. You can't prosecute because there is no case. And you can't take this any further than its been dragged out because there is no story without the woman involved and WHAT SHE WANTS is for this to go away.

This isn't about Trudeau, it's about her . SO anyone who's calling for this to be taken in any direction not called for by the woman involved isn't an ally, isn't a defender of women, isn't interested in furthering #metoo. Period.

July 8, 2018 @ 7:39 AM

My Indians blew it yesterday. They lost. That's no good at all. The pen lost it. They were giving up runs when they took Corey Kluber out. My Orioles lost as well. Nothing new. My Diamondbacks won though. Well, my Indians and Diamondbacks will still make it to the World Series. I know they will. This will be the best World Series of my life.

@Andrew, 6 kids are out of the cave , which is great news.
I just can't imagine (being a bit claustrophobic) of first time swimming, going in confined spaces with scuba gear on, and being a kid. Panic would set in so easily. The divers and the rescue team are definitely skilled and real heros,
As for Justin Trudeau's situation: He got caught up in the glass houses scenario of throwing stones.
All his earlier comments about men's behaviour, etc. came back to bite him a little, even if there isn't a real burger in this story.

July 8, 2018 @ 2:35 PM

I saw a couple of movies over the last several days. A little disappointed in The First Purge,
especially after the great The Purge: Anarchy from several summers ago. Former Oscar winner
Marisa Tomei is totally wasted in what could have been a much stronger written role. The film
picks up towards the end when it turns into some bizarre mash-up of an inner city Die Hard
knockoff meets the first couple of Rambo flicks. Also, about a half hour ago I just finished
watching Upgrade, a movie written and directed by one of the two co-creators of the Saw
movie franchise. This flick is a loving tribute to some of the better low-rent movies produced
by the illustrious Cannon company in the 1980s, filtered through obvious affection for The
Terminator, Robocop, the original Death Wish and, of course, most unintentionally, Cancon
no-budget schlockfest Manborg! Definitely highly recommended. I saw it at the Carlton cCnemas,
where $15 (with a coupon from Now Magazine) gets you your admission, a medium popcorn and
and a medium soft drink. This current deals runs out at the end of the month. Their sister cinema
on Front Street, the Market Square, is temporarily offering $7 matinees.

July 8, 2018 @ 3:59 PM

I'm still not sure how I feel about it.

But damn I miss Scrubs.

I'm loving your world cup coverage. The last time England got to the world cup semi final, I was 7 (I'm now 35) and I remember it well. We lost to West Germany on penalties. There's a feeling that we have an even better chance now, although I don't want to jinx it.

Baseball really sucked yesterday. My Indians, Orioles, and Diamondbacks all lost. My Diamondbacks lost in 16 fricken innings. That's a long game. Oh well. anyway, the World Series teams better win today. Well, my Diamondbacks don't play today, but my Indians do. My Indians have five players on the all star team so that's good. It will still be Indians and Diamondbacks to the World Series.

When you don't have a natural rooting interest, it's interesting how things naturally evolve. When England played Columbia, I felt myself mildly cheering for Columbia, but when England played Sweden, I was rooting for England. A lot of this is because I keep hearing and playing that darn Three Lions song (which I'll play again today during episode 356 of Toronto Mike'd) and it's like some sort of propaganda machine... also, recent guests Greg Brady and Rob Johnston are big England fans, so they've helped talk me into it. The parallels with the Maple Leafs are big here.

France vs. Belgium will be fun tomorrow, and then we'll see if your England can make it to their first final since '66.

July 9, 2018 @ 8:02 AM

Philly-Bob - I can't recall if I said anything about Patrick Brown - but clearly his own party wanted him gone more than the Liberals did. They've shot us all in the foot bigtime now. I discussed Trudeau a long time before this hit the news, and the woman didn't even want the story out there - but had to make a statement. I hope she genuinely did receive an apology that she was satisfied with. Trudeau could have handled it better once it came out though.

We're selling our kick-ass double stroller. That's how confident I am I'm done having kids.

So if you need a sturdy, reliable, easy-to-disassemble-and-assemble, highly configurable double stroller, let me know!

$100 is the asking price. I can throw in a couple of Lost Indie City buttons, too.

July 9, 2018 @ 8:24 AM

Perhaps if you get your asking price for that double stroller, you might want to put it
towards the cost of a vasectomy or additional birth control supplies? Not trying to be
crass or funny, but 'Mother Nature' might have other plans, and the next thing you know,
you'll find yourselves in the market for another stroller!!! Imagine: Your own starting five!!

On another note, wonder if they are any plans for Sting to record a tribute song for the Thailand
cave kids, ya know, in a more modern/updated take on his classic Krusty the Clown collaboration "We're Sending Our Love Down the Well?" Little Timmy O'Toole is practically middle-aged by now!

I'm rooting for England for a few reasons , 1st I have Scottish background and Scotland is not there so England is a kind of 3rd choice (obviously Canada would be first ! )

2nd Thanks to Mike introducing me to twitter and me falling in love with British panel shows i follow a lot of English comedians and they are posting so much England love that i'm kind of been swept up in it.

And lastly My wife is French and I could be a French supporter (and will be if England is eliminated) but it's a little more fun to be opposite her LOL.

I have been exposed to a lot of Football over the last 6 years and i'm actually starting to really enjoy the games. And actually (kind of ) understand the strategy so this has been the most interesting world cup yet. And i still HATE the falling down histrionics that some players still engage in.

You know you’ve been playing the follow up, Three Lions 98 right? The original was in 96. That was the year that Gareth Southgate missed the penalty that would have gotten us to the Euro final. The 98 version is a tribute to that.

Southgate spent years with the memory of that penalty haunting him. He’s now the England manager and pretty much the most popular person in the country. It’s a great story!

Just putting it out there, vis-a-vis, the tweet from The Lost Indie City on Mike's Twitter feed, but sorry, I don't consider The Clash's "This Is England" to be one of their finer moments!! Drum machines,

I recently made the coin-tossed choice of switching over to Boom from IQ of 7 because I wanted
to experience a little more professional mediocrity from my local radio station. Heard the
Stray Cats "Rock This Town" shortly before I left my Parkdale hovel, and quickly remembered
what an extremely talented guitarist Brian Setzer has always been. A real shame that only a
couple of his tunes ever get played regularly on commercial radio, maybe four if you include
his Louis Prima cover from the big band craze post-Swingers. His discography is filled with
countless other cool examples of his enormous skill. The A cappella version of "I Won't Stand In
Your Way" by the Stray Cats also proves that he is a terrific crooner as well.

Don't worry Cheryl, you don't have to go to Great Lakes Brewery on July 19.

July 10, 2018 @ 3:02 PM

Sadly my first non-oldies tape was not anything nearly as cool. It was MJ's "Thriller", and being
the trendy little Original Chubster that I was, I didn't buy it until the release of the title track as a
single more than a year after its original release!! I'd like to say that my first vinyl purchases were
a little more on point, but sadly they weren't: "Macho Man" by the Village People and the self-titled
first album by The B-52's!! So perhaps the latter album salvages my crappy musical 'taste' from
childhood? But I did manage to learn a lot about fashion and masculinity from Fred Schneider!!!
Might explain a few things 'bout my lifelong lack of real success with the ladies!!

@Toronto Mike

It's probably for the best.

Cheryl likely would have went to the old Great Lakes Brewery because she couldn't find the new one due to you not giving her the address in time.

July 10, 2018 @ 3:34 PM

@Urooj Islam
You are both truly a seer and the most astute/keen observer on this blog.
Don't ever change!! Alas, it is also looking like I will have to miss the GLB shindig,
as I'm beholden to attend that Radiohead gig on the same night. Thus far my
friend is refusing all suggestions that someone else accompany him. 'tis a
shame, really, as he will do nothing but complain about how uncomfortable
the seats are, the price of their merchandise and, most of all, the fact that
the setlist will presumably lean heaviest on the band's more 'difficult work'
from the past fifteen years (not my cup of tea either, mind you!!).

My first vinyl was Duran Duran's Rio.

July 10, 2018 @ 4:12 PM

See, you were hip (no tragic pun intended!!) and in-tune with the zeitgeist from an early age!
Me, I wouldn't have known hip if it had punched me in my face meant (most def!) for radio!!!

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

I don't know how hip I was. I was feasting on the golden oldies cassettes that came from gas stations until I started listening to 680 CFTR and loved Stray Cats and Duran Duran, etc.

July 10, 2018 @ 4:23 PM

Those kind of cassettes were great. They often turn up all yellowed and unplayable at various
thrift shops around Toronto! Cassettes are still a great way of listening to a lot of more obscure
music that is absent from streaming services and Youtube. Although some hipster record stores
charge ridiculous prices for them!! Glad I held on to my musical booty (even if I'm the only one
who still really gives a shit about this format!!!).

July 10, 2018 @ 4:27 PM

LMAO @ "Cheryl likely would have went to the old Great Lakes Brewery because she couldn't find the new one due to you not giving her the address in time."

Urooj is the best.

A great day today with all the Thailand soccer players & coach being rescued alive.
Will be a long journey with al of them getting back to normalcy.

Responders made this rescue happen & congratulate them all.

Nice to see the CFL bashers out again. This year will be the 106th Grey Cup. Compare that to any other sports trophy.

July 10, 2018 @ 6:34 PM

cfl = compact fluorescent lamp/light

Do I need to avoid the "Wee Britain" part of the GTA tomorrow because of the World Cup? I don't even know where it is.
YouTube link

July 10, 2018 @ 6:39 PM

^ And I would strongly advise against bashing any of those CFLs, since doing so apparently releases toxic mercury vapour.

@collingwood dave

That's some pretty mild CFL bashing. I think Urooj Islam mentioned he doesn't know what's going on until the Grey Cup and then Cheryl let us know she only cares about the NFL.

My only criticism of the CFL in Toronto is that fans really do not come out for the Argos. On a nice Saturday afternoon that great outdoor field is only half full.

July 10, 2018 @ 7:20 PM

My first vinyl was ... Love Junk >_

I'm not a fanboy I swear haha. Just got into TPOH at a formative time.

My musical taste is far better reflected here:

My first non-kids' cassette was ... The Nylons.

You got me thinking about my old account. I used to listen to music in the office via Winamp with an Audioscrobbler plugin tracking my music. I just logged in for the first time in forever and here's how it looks.

July 10, 2018 @ 8:25 PM

If you delve into my stats, I started in 2005, but didn't stick with it long and quit ... then picked it up again in 2007 and was obsessed and OCD about it. I should almost go back and delete all the 2005 scrobbles so it's more consistent...

But yeah, it reflects my post-secondary taste and all the cancon from my childhood I was hugely into barely registers there. I actually lost interest in a tonne of bands I used to love, after high school. The biggest ones would be Weezer and U2.

July 10, 2018 @ 9:13 PM

re: collingwood dave: "Nice to see the CFL bashers out again. This year will be the 106th Grey Cup. Compare that to any other sports trophy."

James Wilder Jr and SJ Green have rekindled my Argo fever!

What a 1st CFL touchdown at the 2 minute mark!

July 10, 2018 @ 9:33 PM

I don't need a stroller. I don't have kids and don't want kids. Well, I'm mad. My Indians had a 4 to 0 lead but they blew it in the ninth. What a shame. Trevor Bauer pitched a gem, but nothing to show for it because the closer gave up runs galore and they lost. My Orioles won and my Diamondbacks won. Anyway, my Indians better start winning again soon. I'm so mad at Cody Allen for blowing that game.

July 11, 2018 @ 7:23 AM

Sorry Cheryl

i didn't have my curve ball last night.

Great podcast Mike.

technically my First Vinyl was the jungle book sound track in 1967.

But the First actual Album I choose was Cosmo's Factory from CCR and my First 45 was Immigrant Song From Led Zep. I brought that single to school to play in class in grade 3 and when asked what it was i couldn't articulate what it was . I was asked by the teacher if it was music or a story I said music and the was asked if it was like wipe out by a class mate I think he meant was it rock music but because it was like nothing i'd ever heard i said no. It freaked out the whole class and got ripped right off the turn table before Robert plant could get out the second scream. good times.

I still have a cassette deck. I never bought Cassettes but i made hundreds (well it seems like hundreds now) I only have about 20 left , i forgot them when my ex wife and i split up and she eventually tossed them . Some great mixed tapes gone to land fill:( And for sure there were lots of obscure bands /songs on those tapes mostly late 70's and early 80's punk rock. I wouldn't have minded getting some of that back.

July 11, 2018 @ 9:22 AM

Didn't Custom only have that one 'hit'?!? If so, your total number of spins are more than impressive!!
Gotta figure you went deep cuts on that album.

Impressive handle for your lastfm account! Can't beat that dual-bass guitar sound!!

Toss-up between PWEI and ned's for all time favourite. Coincidentally from the same small town, but beside sharing accents, they're quite different.

Croatia, with less than 1/3 the population of Southern Ontario makes the final of the biggest sports tournament on the planet.

That's kind of amazing.

Anyone recall any countries that small performing this well on the international stage in other sports?

July 11, 2018 @ 10:37 PM

Sam from England

A shame to go out in another semi final, but I’m so used to seeing it happen to a bunch of overpaid prima donnas who don’t care. This team cared, and did their best, so I can’t fault them. At least now I can actually enjoy the final!

Croatia have always been a dark horse- they’ve produced some great players in their time, and deserve to be in the final. France, though.

July 12, 2018 @ 3:15 AM

Well, my Indians won last night. That was a big win and another win for Carlos Carrasco. Well, homers were by Franky Lindor and two by Jose Ramirez. I didn't know Cody Allen was on this blog as well. Well, my Orioles lost and my Diamondbacks lost big. That was no good. I don't have tape cassettes or vinyl anymore or CDs. I listen to music on Spotify with my Amazon echo. I can tell it what to play with my voice. That's the best way.

July 12, 2018 @ 7:07 AM

Bob Seger - Verified

I am happy that my fans listen to me on Spotify. It is exciting to get my music to a new audience that way. When you are a travelin' man, it is inconvenient to have to bring a record player and all those vinyl LP's. It might be new-fnagled technology, but it's still old just time rock'n'roll.

Has my young friend John Couger checked in hre yet? I was telling him how great Toronto Mike is. Maybe we can get together and kick up some hams.

July 12, 2018 @ 8:50 AM

Any possibility that the Boss is also a regular if somewhat lurking follower of Toronto Mike?
I mean, when he isn't slumming it on Broadway!!!

Don't forget about Dickey Betts, after all, that was his tune!!

You're right, I always forget about Dickey Betts.

July 12, 2018 @ 9:44 AM

Speaking of very different, hard to believe that PWEI's Clint Mansell went on to such a successful career as a film composer! As for Ned's A.D., always felt that their song "Not Sleeping Around" was like a personal mantra back in the day, but only 'cause I couldn't even give "IT" away. Still can't, for the most part!!! # (Friendly!) Incel Strong, (too soon?!?)

A great unreleased track from Tom Petty dropped yesterday: "Keep A Little Soul" from the sessions
for the "Long After Dark" album (1982). Great track, and another shining example of how sometimes
an artist leaves killer tracks on the shelf for a multitude of reasons. Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello,
Prince, and Bob Dylan also fall into this category.

July 12, 2018 @ 9:44 AM

And at this point there are only two original Allman Brothers Band members alive: Dickey
Betts and Jaimoe. Often felt like they were in some klnd of Final Destination-esque non-contest
with Lynyrd Skynyrd, involving which band would lose all its original members first. How morbid
of me!! Still love Steve Buscemi's ironic soliloquy from Con air about Skynyrd more than 20 years later!!

July 12, 2018 @ 9:49 AM

the police are gathering, because there is something that could happen but it is unconfirmed what the thing is, or where it is to take place.

It's all so oddly non-specific. Hopefully it's an empty threat, as it usually is, but the lack of detail is a little disconcerting.

July 12, 2018 @ 1:46 PM

Just finished watching a free outdoor concert as part of the Downtown BIA Play In The Parks
series: The Command Sisters (College Park). A sister duo originally from Calgary, they played
a tight 18 or 19 song setlist, and also threw in a lot of interesting covers:"Lonely Boy"-Black Keys, "Hallelujah"-Leonard Cohen "September"-EWF. "Hey Ya!"-Outkast, "The Ballad of John and Yoko"-The Beatles, "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree"-K.T. Tunstall,"Free Fallin'"-Tom Petty", and "September" by EWF. They also played a lot of great original tunes, including an outstanding piano ballad called "Under Water" from their forthcoming debut album.

On a related note, noted Toronto Mike'd theme composer iLLvibe will be performing as part
of this same series on Sunday August 19th between 11AM and 2 PM in the McGill Granby

July 12, 2018 @ 2:01 PM

Should have also mentioned above that there was increased security/police presence at that
free outdoor concert. In fact, within 15 minutes a somewhat over-refreshed Aboriginal woman
was asked to leave due to numerous vocal interruptions, smoking, and best of all, openly drinking Scotch from a Evian water bottle!! She high-fived the front row (including me, much to my chagrin!) as
she less-than-triumphantly made her forced exit!! Good times for the Thursday noon hour!

knocked back down to size!! One less thing for me to feel inferior about, and I'm not even on
social media, 'cept for other than as a intrepid lurker (where permissible, of course!!). Got enough
trouble connecting with folks in real life (failing big time!!,) to waste time over-obsessing 'bout my
non-existing followers online. Born to lead, Bab-ee!!!
