I didn't even know the Marlies were in the Calder Cup finals? Kinda sad it never was mentioned anywhere I was. But good on them!!! Congrats!!

annonomas - get a life, seriously.

June 15, 2018 @ 7:55 AM

Congrats Garret Sparks on the shutout also last night

June 15, 2018 @ 7:55 AM

I didn't know Open Mike would be posted so early, but it was. I don't care if I'm first or not honestly. I mean who cares. My Indians won last night. That's great. Mike Clevinger pitched a gem. Jose Ramirez hit a home run. My Indians are awesome. My Diamondbacks won as well. Homers by David Peralta, Paul Goldschmidt and Jake Lamb. Indians and Diamondbacks to the World Series. Orioles had the night off. That meanhs they didn't lose. Well, Indians and Diamondbacks will be there fore sure. Great World Series coming up.

Anyone use TSN online? I want to sign up for World Cup games (25 bucks a month).

June 15, 2018 @ 10:08 AM

Irv I'm a nefarious character that pays $20 a month for IPTV. It comes with, well every channel ;)

June 15, 2018 @ 10:14 AM

I only need TSN for World Cup to be honest. I'm not sure I'd keep it though if they carry TFC games then maybe. I think I'll sign up regardless and at worst I'm out 25 bucks. Now I should run to Best Buy and get me a nice curved screen !

June 15, 2018 @ 10:50 AM

I just bought it. Streaming the Iran game. It's clear but not 1080P clear. You get 720P. No chatter or latency in the stream.

June 15, 2018 @ 11:25 AM

@ jj yes BOSS Thanks expert I have a life. I even knew the Marlie's were in the cup finals (7 games ya know)

If anyone is watching what the US is currently doing to families at their border and still tries to defend that Trump White House and their entire administration isn't flat out racist you need to get your head checked.

The prison camp they have setup for nearly 1400 young boys in an abandoned walmart is nothing short of despicable. The lying to families when they take away babies that they are going to give them a bath to never let their parents see them again is outright cruelty.

All of this being done to deter others from trying to cross the border. In other words a scare tactic. All the while that keebler elf Jeff sessions claims this is gods will is revolting.

Last time I checked tax cuts didn't come with a side of torture and inhumane treatment.

June 15, 2018 @ 1:35 PM

@Ben V

Same guy starts a trade war with China. China funds a substantial portion of the United States debt. China is the reason that Walmart & low cost goods exist for Joe 6pack in the USA. This is what happens when you elect a kid who was born with a silver spoon to run the country whose more of a reality show TV star than he is a businessman.

Very interesting!

 Develop and deliver 2-4 training sessions to TPL staff
 All programs and meetings will take place at Toronto Reference Library
 Minimum of 2 blog posts published on the TPL website
Remuneration: $6,000

June 15, 2018 @ 3:42 PM

$42 bucks an hour, Princess

Get on it. :)

June 15, 2018 @ 3:50 PM

TPL needs to hire some more I.T. people stat!! Nothing ever gets fixed and the problem is only getting
worse!! I also think that they forgot to announce additional openings in the cleaning staff dept.!!!
Spend a lot of time in libraries and most of the downtown ones stink in more ways than one!
Sure, they are supposed to be for the use of all, but what happens when one particular disadvantaged
group largely claims them as its "own"? Very complex issue and no easy answers, but I've had a few
interesting discussions on this subject with a few library staff who were willing to be open about this
and it was quite revealing! They just work there, so understandably it is above their pay grade.

June 15, 2018 @ 4:13 PM

In other happier and cleaner smelling news, happy to report that the CNE Bandshell concert
roster has now been finalized, and Dennis "Mr. Roboto" DeYoung will be opening up the grand
fair on August 17. He is a far truer representative of that classic Styx sound than the current
version featuring Larry(!) Gowan. Happy that Gowan's eventual retirement will be presumably
well-feathered, but saddened that it limits what was left of his previous solo career. Well, the first
four albums, not that insipid Lawrence Gowan easy listening tripe!!!

June 15, 2018 @ 4:17 PM

You are far too over-qualified and classy to be affiliated with TPL's latest lame attempt to
get hip with the cool kids!! Plus, your sense of smell will never be the same again!! (If
you were to apply and successfully lobbied for the position.) Don't dilute the main brand
for a few (or 6) thousand Shekels or so!! I'd offer to sell a kidney if it would help the 'cause,
but #1. it is illegal, and #2., mine wouldn't do anybody much good!!! Keep the faith, as things
can and will only get better for you from here! Me, sadly, not so much!!

June 15, 2018 @ 4:48 PM

@IRV that was a crazy game, and to think it was their first game of the tournament! I've found all of the games compelling so far. I was going to skip Iran vs Morocco, but even that turned out to be a strong match. I'm not a fan of Ronaldo (I really don't like the whiny face he makes when things don't go his way. An amazing talent, but find him to be too whiny), but that 3rd goal was an amazing showcase of skill. That bend was ridiculous!

Also, TSN carries all the TFC matches

June 15, 2018 @ 8:41 PM

Blind Dave

Congrats to the Marlies. I knew they were in the final but only followed passively. Their playoff run has been going for a few years now, so yeah, they deserved the cup win.

I just got a new cell phone (Sony XZ1) and apparently it has Fibe TV as one of the perks (less data rates, of course). I say apparently because I rarely watch TV on a big screen, let alone a cell phone or tablet. That is partly visual but mostly a complete lack of interest.

And congrats to TO Mike for getting Ann Rohmer on the pod. I honestly never thought it would happen but Mike kept the faith. I'll be listening this weekend.

June 15, 2018 @ 9:14 PM

It was a good game. I find Ronaldo a little annoying myself, but I admit, he's a great football player. Did you see the camera focus on him in the kick before the 3rd goal. Talk about intensity. You could feel that focus right through the screen. He's a weird mix of being able to bend a ball like Beckham but with "Brasilian" footwork.

I'll have to watch TFC. I like soccer, but I admit I'm spoiled by World Cup. The announcers are just fucking awesome. It puts every other sport to shame outside of Bob Cole when he was younger.

June 16, 2018 @ 12:16 AM

Everyone stay warm and hydrated tomorrow!! and today too if it gets hot.

June 16, 2018 @ 8:14 AM

Nobody is talking about the big hockey trade between my Habs and Coyotes. My Habs have Max Domi now. My Coyotes have Alex Galchenyuk now. I like both players. These teams will both make the finals. Carey Price will return and that will be great for my Habs. Well, baseball wasn't good last night except my Diamondbacks did win. Paul Goldschmidt is hot. He homered again. Daniel Descalso also homered. My Indians lost. Corey Kluber didn't pitch very well. He got taken out of the game early. Manager decision. I just hope he's okay. I love Corey Kluber. My Orioles lost again. Why do they always lose?

June 16, 2018 @ 8:20 AM

Just saw the link to the JazzFM 91 staff dismissals, and I really think that this station should be put down like a dead dog. Whether or not the allegations against Ross Porter turn out to have any merit, always seemed like he ran the station like it was his own personal kingdom. No tears over Jaymz Bee (although will admit that he did a lot of good work for the jazz community), but sad to hear about
Mark Wigmore and David Basskin being let go. Really enjoyed what they both brought to the
station. P.S., good thing for Brad Barker that despite keeping his current gig, TPOH are active
again to a certain extent. Probably lucrative enough to upsize on a Mickey Dee's combo!!!!

June 16, 2018 @ 10:02 AM

I suppose becoming unofficial quasi-homeless centres gives the libraries another purpose for those who may argue they're anachronisms, but I could see it being off-putting for others.

There's a few of those 'classic rock' acts at the CNE Bandshell, who would probably otherwise be seen only at the casinos -- although I see the Styx guy is also at The Rose Theatre in Brampton in October. Oddly, as I don't recall seeing comedians there before, Kevin Nealon is also there in April. I saw him a few years ago, and his act was a little odd itself. The JFL42 comedy fest in September seems to have a line-up uncharacteristically thin on recognizable names, who seem to be doing their own independent shows. And speaking of the casinos, if you go through Niagara Falls you can see the construction of the new $130 million, 5000-seat theatre across the road (well, sort of) from Fallsview is well underway, although it apparently it is still a year away from opening. photo

June 16, 2018 @ 11:04 AM

And speaking of off-putting, did you go that tribute act fest thing in Mississauga last night? I think that Led Zep tribute band should probably work on their sound more than their costumes, although I suppose they weren't terrible, and it was free. A lot of people were leaving before it ended, but it was getting a little cold there at the waterfront, and it lasted until 11:45 pm. I got there at about 7:15 when it was supposed to have already started, but it was politicians and the like congratulating each other, including crusty old ex-mayor Hazel taking a gratuitous shot at Toronto, saying "they screwed up their waterfront". There's yet another LZ tribute act on the Canada Day thing at Woodbine Park. I wish some of them could instead choose to impersonate some slightly less over-exposed 1970s acts, like Thin Lizzy, Blue Öyster Cult, Uriah Heep, etc.

June 17, 2018 @ 5:19 AM

Baseball sucked last night. My Indians, Orioles, and Diamondbacks all lost. It's awful. They all lost which is no good. Well, Alex Galchenyuk will do well with my Coyotes and Max Domi will do well for my Habs. Hockey will be good. Habs and Coyotes are going to be in the finals. I think Cavs and Suns will be in the NBA finals next year.

June 17, 2018 @ 10:57 AM

Sorry about the belated response (darn library technical issues again!) Anyway, no I did not attend
that tribute act concert you wrote about the other evening. For some reason, I thought it was the
Canada Day weekend when you first posted about it several months back. Would have been
great to catch those tributes to Journey and Supertramp!! Sorry that the Zeppelin act was more
concerned about their look then getting the songs/sounds down more accurately. Perhaps listening to some Wolfmother or Strange Karma (Australian acts, both) might make up for that weak Zep knockoff?!? Also, you are absolutely correct in your assertion that greater variety is needed in the classic rock tribute act arena. However, more esoteric acts might not be as financially viableon this side of the pond! In fact, I would tremendously enjoy an Alan Parsons Project cover band, but I suppose the current live version pretty much already fits that bill! Just found out the otherday that I missed a chance to see them in the spring of 2015 in Oakville. If memory serves, Steve Hackett and Carl Palmer have also both performed there on more than one occasion. Who knew that it was such a prog rock haven?!?

June 17, 2018 @ 4:34 PM

Glad to see that they caught one of those "SEWER RATS".

Big Boss Man by BB King. The riff seems like it was stolen by MJ for Billie Jean. Hmmmm??

Yep, I hear that Billie Jean bassline in Big Boss Man.

Which predates Hall & Oates, where I thought he stole the bassline from!

June 17, 2018 @ 7:17 PM

My Indians won. That's great. Shane Beber won his first game. He's not related to Justin Beber. Shane Beber is a young pitcher for my Indians. My Orioles also won for a change. It's about time, but can they get out of the cellar. My Diamondbacks blew it. Brad Boxberger couldn't close it out. That sucks.

So good!! Kicks off the next few months of concerts for me.
Parked about a 5-10min walk away from the ACC, paid $6 which was less than the food I got, popcorn and an ice capp. Their prices are ridiculous! Usually I buy merch, but I am not a huge enough fan of him per se, but I was tempted by a $130 silk robe...

Don't know who this XXXtentacion character was, but yet another shining example of the types

June 20, 2018 @ 7:27 AM

I hope this doesn't turn into a trend. I'll go to free fests that have those silly tribute bands, but I'm not going to pay $50 a day (or $85 for a weekend) like they want at this one in Ottawa.
The Saturday line-up there has similarities to the free Canada Day one here at Woodbine Park

It's interesting... I had a musician on the podcast and this person told me their band would play Lakeshore Mardi Gras, so I went to the website, filled in the form with this info, and offered to broker the deal.

This band that was ready to play (for free!) would be perfect for headlining Friday night, for example. Now 54-40 is a great band (I saw them at this very festival about 4 years ago) and Rik will be singing Triumph hits, so that's cool for this crowd, but what a missed opportunity!

Here's some Triumph to whet your appetite.

June 21, 2018 @ 7:59 AM

Thanks Mike for posting the Leafs Countdown link. It's nice to finally get someone who wants to talk sports on here!

June 21, 2018 @ 8:40 AM

June 21, 2018 @ 8:57 AM

Triumph played at my high school in Aurora when I was in grade nine. It was probably one of the last times they played a high school, as they already had one or two albums released by then, and I think a few months later were headlining venues like the Ontario Place Forum.

free (well, most of them) outdoor movies
For the rockumentaries at Yonge-Dundas Square, that first one, Festival Express, filmed in 1970, has some shots of CNE Stadium when it had the smaller south grandstand that was demolished a few years later and replaced with the larger baseball stand and renamed Exhibition Stadium.

Wow, I've been checking that Lakeshore Mardi Gras website for months for an update, so they
must have put the schedule up overnight or something!! Will be great to see Rik Emmett, but
5440, I mean, wow!! I guess there really can't be a free admission event without them being on
the bill. I guess The Trews and Big Sugar have already been booked in the area at the CNE Bandshell
a few weeks later!! Still can't believe that I missed Helix several years back!

Musical Youth on TMI, how super relevant and timely indeed. Definitely one to grow on!!!

June 21, 2018 @ 9:45 AM

June 21, 2018 @ 9:48 AM

It seems like this year the free movies being offered are potentially more enticing than the
equivalent free concerts, 'cept for a couple of shows at the CNE Bandshell. Not that I can recall
ever attending any such events, but there used to be legit bands playing for free on holidays such
as Canada Day. I won't be happy until there are cover band tributes to Harlequin, Prism, Reo Station-wagon(!) and Savoy Brown.

No laughing matter, I know, but the only child who deserves to be politically removed from his parents for security reasons is most definitely Barron Trump. Quite frankly, I can't imagine any

that all 3 of those things you listed on your Twitter feed might be involved. Can't see

new format.

John Derringer leaving Q107 for Chum FM?

June 21, 2018 @ 3:12 PM

Are they announcing that music radio stations still exist?
I never paid any attention to Journey, but after seeing that tribute band last week, I looked through the wikipedia page, and it led me to this Beavis and Butt-Head clip.
YouTube link
I suppose some misguided directors of early 1980s music videos somehow failed to realize that ugly left-over 1970s bands could maybe be shown playing the song, but never trying to act or pose in videos.
YouTube link

June 21, 2018 @ 3:18 PM

Journey had some awfully horrible music videos as did Reo Speedwagon!!
More than an urban legend that Christopher Cross' less than stellar physical
looks helped put an end to his initially mega-successful career. Still popular
in Germany, and I saw him at the CNE Bandshell in 2014 and he is a most
excellent guitarist. P.S., i still listen to the radio 'cause it gives me something else to
bitch and gripe about on here, or when I'm too lazy to dig through my enormous maze of music
to find something suitable to listen to!!

Derringer should just retire to his country estate at this point and enjoy his family.
Can't see him being a good fit at any other station, then again, haven't cared for
his radio persona for a very long time. Late 80s Derringer was golden, however!!

June 21, 2018 @ 3:31 PM

Uriah Heep's early eighties period chasing the unassailable likes of Foreigner
was musically massive. Haven't thought about that song in ages. Thanks for the link!!
Their 1985 album "Equator" was more of an attempt to ape the likes of
Def Leppard, but "Rockarama" is a fantastic track!!

Jee-Yun Lee looks so lonely doing the CP24 late night news by herself after Toronto Mike left. The fact that they haven't replaced him means he must have left really abruptly.

I know Ann Rohmer mentioned something about why Toronto Mike left but I'm excited to hear from him on the podcast soon.
