First?!? Now my life is finally complete and I can expire with a semi-smile on my face!!
Sorry to disappoint everybody with a lack of a scintillating sports update in this spot!!!

May 11, 2018 @ 9:31 AM

Sorry Cheryl.

Not today :)

Did Pompey use "Summertime Summertime" as his walk up music?
Whose shirt are you wearing for your twitter profile pic (because your bio says 'the shirt in my profile picture is not my own'
your talk with Jay was good. It was almost on par with your conversations with Elvis. Seemed like two buddies shooting the shit
PLEASE get Bif Naked back on again. And not even for KOTJ...just for another deepdive with some #realtalk. I had no idea about her childhood and early life. I just knew she was an awesome rockstar. Can't wait to buy I, Bificus (or something like that) and read it this summer.

My water bottle opened up in my bag the other day and ruined a bunch of library materials.
Has never happened to me before and it has already cost me $15 for destroyed magazines (thank
the library gods that it is a flat fee of $5 per and not the actual cover price!!). I still have one more
mag to return and hopefully its minimal damage won't be too discernible to the human eye! I also
have a thick graphic novel that is somewhat water-logged but it is not due for several more weeks.
I guess I'll be eating a lot of Ramen noodles and Dollarama mac 'n' cheese over the next several

I don't believe he did. :(

I'll see if I can get that changed when it's actually summertime.

I promise to get Bif back. I agree, we need another deep dive. She was fantastic, and the commute here couldn't be closer.

May 11, 2018 @ 10:00 AM

My suggestion: have Bif and her band at your summer GLB night (when is that going to be???)! I know she doesn't drink but her band does (and I assume your readers/listeners too)!

Maybe her and Snake for an acoustic night. Snaked on guitar, Bif doing vocals. OMG that would be amazing.

May 11, 2018 @ 10:15 AM

Drake's term "6ix" being used by a Canadian band in a song that's blowing up all over the world. I heard this on Energia 97 FM, Sao Paulo Brasil last night.

You wanna ride in the 6. You wanna dine in the 6.

May 11, 2018 @ 10:17 AM

And how 'bout Splash 'N Boots as well?!? Perhaps they could do their bluer material?!?

Because some dink will record it and update it to YouTube and next thing you know Treehouse is cutting ties. :)

Perhaps I should have typed adult instead!! Not dirty or sexy-type stuff, just without some of the kid-friendly rhymes and cuteness!! Say, more mature pop stuff!!!

Google search results for "Lunch with Charles" spiked 345% after Bif Naked's episode was uploaded.

Raptors have fired Dwayne Casey...

May 11, 2018 @ 12:04 PM

Just hearing that the Raptors have fired Casey.
This is just wrong.
Now I really hope he wins coach of the year.
On a positive note, today I didn’t have to scroll sideways!

May 11, 2018 @ 12:06 PM

James Edgar

Happy Friday all.

Back from the Dominican, pretty badly burnt but ended up having a not bad time. had lots of talks with my wife and sorted a few things out. We are still splitting up but we aren't. Turns out she still loves me but can't live with me. She wants to "Date" once we have sorted out living separately. What that actually means is beyond me a bit. It tried to make sense of it and think i have but I've found that there appears to be a certain amount of flexibility in her interpretation of her plans as time goes on. I'm okay with this for now at least but i may have second thoughts down the road. As for now I dont have the cash on hand to move right away but i'm trying to figure out how to move things around to come up with some flexibility. Of course trying to find a rental at this point is additionally a PITA thanks to a shortage of rentals and increasing rents as a result.

That GLB get together sounds better and better bring it on!

May 11, 2018 @ 12:07 PM

Casey out as raptors coach. Not surprised, its unfortunate though. He's given so much to this team and city but Cleveland kept getting in the way. Ultimate goal is to win championships and the raps just couldnt get over the hump.

That said Ujiri is very smart, dont think they make this move withour having someone in mind.

Happy Mothers day to all the moms out there!

May 11, 2018 @ 12:39 PM

Brian Gerstein (RaptorsDevotee)

Casey is fired, and I am totally fine with that. Rumour is Casey asked for an extension to guarantee himself job security entering the last year of his contract which forced Masai's hand during the review process. Still I am confident that Masai has someone in mind regardless.

Kudos to Casey who gave us the best run of Raptors ball in their history. A new voice with a coach capable of Brad Steven's capabilities is desperately needed.

I am not saying that the players themselves are not also accountable and the roster to some degree is flawed, however I myself lost confidence in Casey's playcalling and match-ups so am looking forward to see what the future brings.

Where's Waldo, I mean Cheryl?

May 11, 2018 @ 1:19 PM

Whoopee I found O/M no problem and I am first !!!!!!
MY Golden Showers will drench the Jets this week end & Aunt Harriet will be behind
home plate as well.

May 11, 2018 @ 1:22 PM

I know that I quickly looked up that Bif Naked flick as soon as the episode ended, but I swear that it
was purely for investigative purposes! Scout's honour, although I was never actually a boy scout!! So
there ya go, statistics don't lie.

"Mother Mother" by Tracy Bonahm might have also made for a fitting choice as the bumper music
for today's episode of TMI (well, perhaps for the kinds of mothers Jann Arden definitely wasn't
singing about in her track "Good Mother"!!)

Very surprised by virtually no comments about Dubus hiring & Casey firing today as big sports stories in TDot.
I thought TMike would be all over this. I miss Cheryl as no comment today. Hope everything with her is OK.

When everyone's all over a big story like that, I often go silent. To be honest, neither was a big surprise, although I am disappointed they fired Casey.

Heard "Mother Mother" on Lithium the other day. Forgot how much of an awesome tune that is. Whatever happened to Tracy Bonham? We haven't heard anything from her since.

Yeah, I thought Toronto Mike would be all over the age gap between Lamoriello and Dubas as the biggest between consecutive GMs in recent sports history. He loves weird shit like that, haha.

As for the Casey story, given that it was slowly becoming evident over the last few days that he would go, I think who the replacement is will be the much bigger story. In my opinion, the Raptors can't go with a first time head coach to replace someone as credible and experienced at Casey yet the job will garner a ton of interest as the Raptors are still a good team so they could go in a bunch of different directions. I am really at a loss for a sensible candidate.

I learned long ago never to put anything liquid in the same bag as anything it can ruin. Even condensation can do it if it doesn't break open.
In the apartment building where I live on the lowest floor, about once every 18 months, dirty stinky drain water will come up out of kitchen sink drain and then all over the floor at that end of the apartment. The first time it happened, it completely ruined a lot of books, magazines, and programs from sports events from the 1970s and '80s that I had unwisely stored in a nearby closet on the floor.

May 12, 2018 @ 7:10 AM

I'm here. I couldn't find this open Mike yesterday. It was hiding. I tried and tried, but couldn't find it. I posted on the last open Mike. I have no idea what is going on. Well, my Indians lost. They blew a lead. Michael Brantley had a grand slam which made the game wide open, but they lost it anyway. I hate slugfests. They tend to drag on. My Diamondbacks lost as well, but my Orioles won. My Cavs will keep winning because they're the best. Cavs win 2018 championship.

May 12, 2018 @ 7:51 AM

James Edgar - zomg, I was just thinking about you and wondering how it all went.

that sounds somewhat positive, and i do hope everything goes well. crossing my fingers you do find a place, but yeah the market is tough!

I see Aunt Harriet is not 2 rows behind home plate at the Jays game looking dazed & confused.
One can only assume she is at home being the supplier of some afternoon delight to Alfred.

Urooj Islam

No Bob Cole this year at all in the playoffs?

May 12, 2018 @ 7:11 PM

Well the world was all so supportive of Rogers buying hockey rights. And it's been a flop hasn't it. And it will continue to be a bigger flop down the road & will play a part of people *not* watching hockey. If you want to support your national support, ALL the games need to be free. And online.

These sports masters imagine they can do what they want without consequence. Years ago I was cut off from seeing the Grey Cup on TV, so I stopped watching.

May 12, 2018 @ 9:34 PM

My Indians won last night. That was great. How about Franky Lindor. He had two homers and two doubles. Mike Clevinger pitched a gem. My Orioles won the first game of a doubleheader, but they lost the second. My Diamondbacks lost again. Why do they have to slump now. Well, my Cavs play today. They'll win. They'll win the championship. We are the champions which is a Queen song. The Cavs are the champions.

May 13, 2018 @ 8:10 AM

So 41 games into the Jay season and I don't miss Gregg Zaun AT ALL.
Hopefully soon I can say the same about "get up ball, get up ball" and " he's a great hitter if the pitch is a strike"

May 13, 2018 @ 2:59 PM

My Cavs lost. Boy did they ever lose. Oh well, it will be Cavs in five or six. My Indians won. Corey Kluber pitched a real gem. How about Franky Lindor. He's so hot. More hits. How about Michael Brantley. My Orioles won as well. My Orioles are heating up. My Diamondbacks lost again though. That's no good. They better start winning again soon.

May 14, 2018 @ 7:44 AM

James Edgar

I'm not enough of a basketball devotee to really comment on Casey's firing and was away for the Cavs Series so I don't know the details on bad play calling but the Celtics seem to have beaten the Cavs in game 1 so maybe there's some truth to the criticism of his playoff coaching.

What does seem pretty clear to me is that Casey's a pretty great human being and the city is slightly worse off without him.

That is the business though and no coach is ever secure for the long term in any pro sports league.

they do seem to have a flawed lineup though and that's on Masai Ujiri. Hopefully they can make some changes over the summer and combined with a new coach break through in the playoffs.

Not going to hold my breath though.

May 14, 2018 @ 9:36 AM

I am glad LeBron lost, and hope they get bounced. Still sad about Casey, but he is the easiest contract Masai can get rid of. Anyone wondering when Masai's time will run out????

The Serge move ain't feeling too hot now, Norm better work on his stuff over the summer too. I blame everyone for getting us bounced so quickly, it was a team loss.

May 14, 2018 @ 11:29 AM

Urooj Islam

Ujiri has earned enough leeway to finally hire his own coach. I don't think he has to worry about his job anytime soon, remember, as bad as the playoff losses have been, the Raptors are still in the midst of their best stretch in franchise history.

May 14, 2018 @ 3:22 PM

Urooj Islam - oh for sure they are doing amazing (as Kris Jenner would say) but I am curious as to how long he gets to stay around in general. Looking forward to the summer to see what we do.

May 14, 2018 @ 7:41 PM

Everyone hating on my Cavs. LeBron is the king. Well, they are going to win it in five or six. I know this. They had a bad day on Sunday, but tonight the series will be even. My Cavs will win. My Indians lost last night and my Diamondbacks lost. This sucks. My Orioles didn't play last night. Well, again Cavs are winning the championship. They will do it.

May 15, 2018 @ 6:49 AM

Re: TMI today -- Mike, you actually can opt out of (Amber) Alerts on many phones. Here it is on mine:

Saw people saying it requires Android 8.0, which my OnePlus 3T is on.

May 15, 2018 @ 8:17 AM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

But I've been told that won't work for these types of alerts!

Here's a recent reddit discussion about it.

May 15, 2018 @ 8:25 AM

I am finding all the complaints about the Amber Alert really sad. Mike, you weren't complaining I know and your point about the security of it all is valid.

But people saying oh it interrupted me whilst I was working and listening to music( as reported in the Star) or then it came through on my car Bluetooth which could distract some drivers and what about that?! Anything can distract a driver, someone honking their horn gives me a huge start.

One alert every thirty minutes, for a couple hours yesterday and so many are up in arms, it's sad. I would want everyone to know if I had a child gone missing, or god forbid my friends' kids or my nieces. I guess I am saddened that not everyone feels the same.

May 15, 2018 @ 9:10 AM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

I'm sure not complaining because my phone isn't getting any of these alerts. I didn't get the test last week and I didn't get anything yesterday.

Here's my concern, and hear me out.... if these scary alarms are going to be for things like this (an 8 year old missing is VERY important, but he's in Thunder Bay and three alarms in Toronto aren't likely to help matters IMHO) then it's only a matter of time before people either find a way to stop receiving them or just ignore them completely.

When this happens, and it will happen, an actual emergency will be ignored. It's classic "boy who cried wolf". You can't have 9 alarms that aren't really relevant and then the 10th be an actual bonafide security warning (natural disaster, terrorism, aliens, etc.).

May 15, 2018 @ 9:17 AM

I mostly agree with you, and am not complaining. I do think it would be far more effective if it was more localised though.

@Toronto Mike,

I suppose I can test it myself. I'm in an office, so it's not like disabling means I'll actually miss anything. It's worked reliably for me so far.

May 15, 2018 @ 9:19 AM

This is a new system and because they don't have a lab to test it, they're testing it in a practical environment. As with all things technology (to which you should understand) there are kinks in it when you deploy it.

As for the people who say "this interrupted me" I shake my head. I've met & interviewed more than one person with a missing daughter or child. Every minute feels like an hour & often their world stands still in time. Abduction of a child is a crime.

Truth is, as someone that committed a substantial amount of my life to public & national safety, I find these comments vile. It makes me wonder why I was out there "playing superhero". At times I'd like to return to that life so when someone calls and says "My daughter is missing" I can say "did you complain about the phone alert system. If they did I'd just say well let me put you on hold while I finish my lunch & finish harvesting my carrots in Farmville.

May 15, 2018 @ 11:46 AM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

It would be impossible for me to care less about the testing. Test away. Unless these tests are at 3am, I couldn't care less.

May 15, 2018 @ 12:03 PM

I can see what you're saying - and I think anyone who decides these are so annoying that they are going to ignore them, is kinda sad. And yes, your phone should be getting these but they did have a lot of glitches last week, and it seems this week too, so hopefully they get the issue resolved.

I understand that in reality the people of Toronto would not be able to assist in a Thunder Bay case, but I still don't have an issue in receiving the message. It's a small blip in a long line of things that a lot of people use their phone for.

markosaar - you and Mike might be on to something about them being localized - so this Thunder Bay one could have gone out to persons in TB only, and the smaller communities around there. And for us in Toronto, more local. But either way, I don't have an issue with what they are trying to do so far!

May 15, 2018 @ 12:42 PM

You all fail to realize that for every hour "post abduction" the suspect can put up to 120 km of space between them in any direction. Draw a ring around Toronto with a 3 hour travel time and take a look at it. Then draw a 5 hour and a 7 hour ring. Suddenly you realize the morning abductor could be in Timmin's by the afternoon.

Civilians imagine police solve crimes like they're watching CSI Miami. They do not. The collect the evidence and analyze it. It's just that very often evidence comes from the public & that's how crime gets solved. It's why "solve" rates are so high in good neighborhoods & so terrible in place like Surrey, BC. It's not because the police suck there. It's because the citizens refuse to submit tips or take part in the process. The result is no data, nothing to analyze, crime not solved. YOU help solve crime.

As for the "could someone in Toronto assist in a criminal case in TBay"? Fucking right they could. What if someone in Toronto knows the abductor? What if they had seen patterns in the persons behavior? What if they knew that this person had a preferred "cottage" to "escape" from. Of that person had gone on a secure social media site and said something the day before?" I've personally seen threats against schools on 4chan which materialized into shootings. 2+2 = 4 That's metadata that police can use to analyze & potentially draw up something. SOMETHING is better than nothing in forensics.

May 15, 2018 @ 3:50 PM

Did someone here tell them to get a Bob Seger tribute act?

May 15, 2018 @ 4:31 PM

Did you know there was a plan to build an almost full scale replica of the Titanic in Welland? Instead it appears a smaller Titanic museum thing will built on land in Niagara Falls, although from the other news articles on that, I'm not entirely sure if they've been able to come up with all the money to build it yet.

A new 5000-seat music venue is already under construction across the road from the Fallsview Casino complex, and is scheduled to be open in a little over a year from now

May 15, 2018 @ 5:10 PM

How about MY LV Golden Showers eh !
3 wins away from the Cup final with 3 of the next 5 games at home.
I don't care about basketball.

May 16, 2018 @ 4:21 AM

What a night. My Cavs lost. Oh well, so it will be Cavs in six or seven. Trust me. My Indians had a big lead, but couldn't hold it. I wish they wouldn't keep blowing it like that. It's like they need a 10 to 15 run lead to win. My Orioles got rained out. My Diamondbacks won though. I don't know why my Cavs are losing now as it sucks.

May 16, 2018 @ 7:35 AM

@Irv - good points. In the end, I don't mind the alerts from wherever they may come.

May 16, 2018 @ 8:19 AM

I saw your recent Twitter request regarding potential future Toronto Mike'd guests and hope
that I'm allowed to make the following suggestion: Joey "Vendetta" Scoleri. Not sure if his move
back to Toronto was permanent, but his time on Q107 was both epic and a true testament to the
ultimate hard rock era. Otherwise I'd once again suggest Dick Smyth and/or Peter Silverman, but
I know that there is that pesky distance issue.

Can't believe that the year is nearly half over and we still haven't had an update on that front!!
Heaven forbid the Zoomer empire should ever collapse in a sea of potential lawsuits and

*LOL*, trust me, with a work load like mine I won't be crashing anything. It's 9 PM and I'm sitting at this computer still working.

@Jody T

Anytime you want me to come and tell you how much AM Stereo was a flop and how digital streaming is superior to carrying around records & a record player, let me know. I'll do that. Long live my iTunes collection.

May 17, 2018 @ 9:26 PM

Jody Thornton

I know AM Stereo was a flop. Not denying it: It's too bad though. Wideband AM (even in mono) can sound great. But I'm not contesting that AM Stereo was a flop. Sigh!

Now digital streaming may be more convenient, but in no way is it superior to LP playback at its finest. I know you say no one cares about high fidelity sound reproduction, but to call vinyl playback at its best "inferior" to digital streaming, well that would be a big mistake on your part. If you were to route the output of your phone to the auxiliary input of a proper receiver or amplifier and play it through a real system, the results would be less than outstanding (I'm sure it would sound good). But a properly setup turntable would top it.

So remember, when you counter-argue (and I know you will) this DOES NOT take convenience into account. Superior should only reflect the analog output of your headphones or speakers. Does streaming or LP sound better

Now, I will say however that the best audio I have heard reproduced to date was on a DVD-Audio demonstration disc recorded by the London Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Even when bridged to mono, the disc would put an LP or open-reel deck to shame.

I think the failure of AM stereo was less about the technology & really more about the availability the technology to hear it at the time. I think had DAB been commonplace it could have taken off, but the industry didn't push it. Today, less than half of people own an FM receiver which makes you wonder where FM radio will go if it doesn't completely embrace streaming.

Sound quality is secondary to ease of access. I'm streaming Energia 97 in Brasil at the moment. The content matters more than the sound quality.

I just like poking fun at you because we've never agreed on this. I'm cool with people and their choice for vinyl, I just wonder "why". Whose got time to sit at home and listen.

We seemed to have to sit at home and listen thirty years ago. Why do we not necessarily have the time now? What is it that makes life have to be busier now? That's just society caving in to pressure. If one can sit and watch a movie attentively for two hours, then certainly one can listen to an LP side for twenty minutes. You have more time to sit back and smell the roses than you think you do.

And perhaps the priority of most is ease of access, rather than sound quality. But that doesn't make the streaming option "superior". I know you'll always find a way around conceding to an argument, but you said the LP is inferior to streaming. Less convenient? Absolutely! But inferior (which last time I checked refers to quality of results) - then the LP wins, and you can't twist that result to suit your agenda Sheesh, at least I admitted to digital being the ultimate winner (even though it was a defunct "home" format.)

Sigh! (you'll get through this Jody)

And yes you're right; availability of receivers (or lack thereof), and the lack of standardization of AM Stereo encoding systems killed hi-fi AM. I've only ever heard Harris Khan and Motorola C-Quam but it took forever to adopt the latter as a unified standard. Most radios in Chrysler and Chevy vehicles stuck with narrow-band reception, so sure it was stereo, but the quality was like .... well, say something with your hand over your mouth. There .... that's how it sounded; just like that.

About four years ago, I was in a re-use shop and they a GE Super Radio. I was in Hamilton, so I tuned in K-Lite FM (or so I thought .... that will make sense in a moment). They were playing Benny and the Jets, and I must say on the Super Radio, the bass was tight, and the high-end was fairly clear. It sounded like a good boom box, but just mono.

Well when Elton John faded, an unfamiliar jingle came on the air .... "More Fuuuuuun!" "More Oldies ..... Oldies 1150"! .... and then Steppenwolf's "Magic Carpet Ride" started.

So wait! I was listening to AM ?????? Really? Now the thing is, I'm well experienced in hearing wideband hi-fi AM, so I should know better than most. But all I mean to say is that, under those casual conditions, I was completely convinced I had been listening to an FM signal. It still made me step back and say "Wow!" And that wasn't even stereo.

So I'll always be a tad regretful that AM Stereo never became mainstream. But I've moved along too.

I have time to listen to music (or watch video) any time I take a trip on a bus or train (or plane I suppose, but I've only done that once in the last ten years) and I know it's going to last more than about half an hour. I don't think my hearing is, and maybe never was, good enough to hear or care about some alleged difference in sound quality. It makes travelling much more tolerable when you don't have to hear others babbling, like the chatty Mr. Know-It-All, screaming babies, giggling teenage girls, etc.

I feel strange that Cheryl found the Open mike this week and didn't post on this one so I'll do the honors.
