Big Mo

Ever since I moved into my current home almost five years ago, I've mowed my lawns with a manual push mower. The trick, I've learned, is to do it frequently, because it can be difficult if the grass gets too high.

My neighbour is going through a rough patch and hadn't mowed his lawn yet this year, so when he knocked on my door this morning asking for a little help, I was more than happy to rise to the occasion, but my push mower wasn't. Here's the challenge I faced an hour ago.

I was wondering who I could borrow a power mower from when I remembered Big Mo. Many years ago, when my mom got rid of her grass lawn, she gave me Big Mo, an old electrical mower that had seen better days. I don't use electrical mowers, but instead of throwing Big Mo in the trash or giving him away, I let him collect rust in the back of my shed. He's been there, undisturbed, for almost five years.

I don't know why I kept Big Mo, but today, I was glad I did. Although it took a while, because the grass was so long I had to take it down in small slivers, Big Mo saved the day.

And now that the lawn is nice and short, I promised my neighbour I'd maintain it with my push mower.

My brother recently moved into his first house in Cornwall and has discovered the simple
pleasures of mowing the lawn and gardening. I have heard more about these two subjects
in the past month than I'd admittedly care to, but his tales of his ongoing battle with the neighbourhood groundhog destroying his yard are quite humorous (not the ruined garden part, but how he's trying to deal with it). Very nice of you to help your neighbour out!!

I straight up enjoy it! Mowing the lawns, shovelling snow, raking leaves... I dig it all!

And to be honest, helping my neighbour was a no-brainer. Not because he's my neighbour, but because he was a human being who needed help.

And maybe as I transition into a new professional life I should start mowing lawns in the hood!

My brother is in-between jobs and my sister-in-law is a doctor, so he has a lot of time on his
hands to hit the gym and maintain the property. Myself, I have enough trouble ignoring all
the hazardous 'tumbleweeds' in my Parkdale shitshack!! P.S., you are definitely one of the
good guys! My body was definitely not made for manual labour of any kind!!

Nice job Mike, The universe has a way of rewarding nice people and that next awesome gig is around the corner, A shout out to listeners north of you. If anyone is coming to the Toronto Mike meet and greet perhaps we can figure out a car pool

You are a good neighbour, I hope your neighbour is doing okay.

There should be a movie about "Big Mo" with "Big Mo" being voiced by Jeff Bridges.

@Urooj Islam
In another era I would have suggest Morgan Freeman for that role!!
Or perhaps Sam Elliott if it is a budget production!!

Helping neighbours, and giving blood on the same day?

You sir, are a terrific human being!

The blood donation was scheduled the mow was not. 😀

"Big Mo" is a withered, old mower who doesn't take no guff from anyone. Freeman has more of a mentor or sagely presence. Although, Sam Elliot would be okay.

"What are you, on grass?!"

- Jeff Bridges or Sam Elliot as "Big Mo"

Classic Big Mo.

@Urooj Islam
Would make a fine alternative to that endless parade of recycled superhero movies and unnecessary
Star Wars flicks!! And besides, my suggestion of Freeman would probably be considered politically incorrect in this day and age apart from his current "Me Too" scandals (just think back to some of the hard feelings expressed over his role in "Driving Miss Daisy" back in the day!!)

I think this lawnmower movie already exists, and it was great!

I'll deem this "lawn porn"! Satisfying to see the before and after pics that "Big Mo" made quick work of!

Your a good man TM!
The war on the dandelions has been lost, keeping your neighbours lawn trimmed will help yours also.

Good Neighbour Mike!

That thing's awesome. Reminds me of when I bought my house and needed a lawnmower. I didn't want to buy one, but on garbage day I saw one just like yours (just as orange & even more rusty) on the side of the road, took it home, plugged it in and it worked like a charm. I used that thing for a few years until a buddy gave me an extra mower he had kicking around. I left the orange beast on the curb and hoped someone grabbed it and got good use of it just like I did.

So neighbourly of you!

May 31, 2018 @ 9:28 AM

LOL. I thought "Big Mo" was your nickname for the beast...until I looked closer and saw the logo.

Old machines are awesome and if maintained properly, almost never die. They don't make them like they used to. The only thing I did replace was the trimmer, because 2 stroke trimmers are brutal to maintain with oil/fuel mixing. Went with battery and never looked back.

OUR neighbor has kept to himself over the years so it isn't easy to reach out to him but I'm glad he finally reached out to someone. Is there something else we can do for him? My son came across your site awhile back and since our house shows up in the background of a number of your guests pics, I've been making an extra effort to keep my yard looking nice. Please try to get us at our best. Lol.
My husband is quite immobile now so we watch your site to see who your guests are and if we know or recognize them. Most drive very nice cars not typical for our neighborhood. We are neighbors all. Do to your neighbor as you would have him do to you. Although sports topics are not my genre I did enjoy Ron James. I do listen on occasion. Keep up the good work neighbor. Loved your pics on High Park blossoms.

Haha... that's great! By process of elimination I think I know who you are, but I'll write you an email to confirm.

Our neighbour does have a son who lives in the city so I think he looks after most stuff, and I see the Meals on Wheels deliveries... but yes, I'm glad he asked me for help. I keep on eye on things over there. :)

The Straight Story is definitely the outlier in the David Lynch oeuvre!! That film needed
a couple of appearances from Frank Booth from Lumberton and a whole lot more of that
so-called Lawn Porn to be even remotely memorable!! I sure felt like Lyle wasn't the only one in
trouble while watching that flick!

We have 2 Cheryl' s now!
I have 1 neighbour on occasion neighbours will clear snow or cut his grass. Most people are usually too proud, or don't want to trouble anyone.
