I'm first. That's good. My Habs won. That's the only good thing that happened, but Carey Price is out indefinitely. He has a concussion. Well, Antti Niemi is good. My Habs will have a big win streak. My Coyotes lost though, and my Cavs and Nets lost. That's not good.

In comments here after some of the specifically radio-related posts, there sure seems to be a lot of people who inexplicably continue listening to on-air personalites they say they can't stand. I don't have enough time to listen or watch all the things I want, never mind intentionally subjecting myself to something/someone I find to be grating (or even uninteresting). I guess some people just like to complain.

@H.o.E.

I've always found this rather fascinating. If you don't like a show, or a host, feel free to change the channel or turn your radio off.

Same works for television.

In Private Parts (which holds up!), it's said those who hated Howard Stern listened twice as long as those who liked him. I think there's a good percentage of people who like to be angry.

Not me...

@Mike
You got me all hot and bothered today when I heard TMI's bumper music and was expecting to
hear that groovy Selena Gomez jam and instead was greeted by that old Talking Heads fossil instead
....PSYCH!!! Also, quite amazed but not totally surprised the way all the recent local sports media
gossip has increased the amount of comments being entered. Would be nice if KOTJ regularly
garnered the same level of visible engagement. A guy can dream, can't he?!?

Podcasting is tough...

First, those who actually subscribe and listen to podcasts are a subset of the masses. So within that subset you have to:

a) make them aware your podcast exists
b) get them to try an episode
c) hope they like it enough to subscribe and listen regularly

With TMI, for example, I'm starting from scratch, so I'm reminded how tough it is. Toronto Mike'd has been around for almost 6 years, and through word of mouth does quite well. With TMI, it's starting from zero.

Everyone should subscribe right now! :)

@Mike
Upon further inspection in other sections of the blog, a little disturbed by some of the
borderline offensive comments posted regarding the forthcoming changes at AM 640.
I like off-colour and blue humour as much as the next maladjusted middle-aged crank,
but more than several of the comments on the topic of Supriya Dwivedi were blatantly
xenophobic! Sure, people are entitled to their biases and opinions but when the discourse
veers towards this darker path I find it rather off-putting. Just one dude's sheltered opinion!!

February 23, 2018 @ 9:55 AM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

@bsmntdwllr73

It seems 640 attracts a rather conservative audience, and this conservative audience finds Supriya to be too liberal.

I'm only basing this on the comments and emails I've received.

February 23, 2018 @ 9:58 AM

bsmntdwllr73

@Mike
This all reminds me in a weird kind of way of that old, obscure Timbuk 3 track "Hairstyles
and Attitudes!!" My politics (if I have any!) definitely don't jibe with this conservative constituency,
but this subject matter really seems to get these folks all riled up!! Life is far too short for the
to hate listen and/or hate watch!! I understand all the admiration for Mike Stafford, but the rest
of it just gives me hives!!!

February 23, 2018 @ 10:03 AM

Hamish Grant

bsmntdwllr73: several of which comments were blatantly xenophobic?

Here are the criticisms of Supriya on the post announcing the change:

"Too Much" (Ed G)
"Whinny voice" (Roland G)
"Can't listen to Supriya at all" Rik
"I will not listen to her" Dan
"Hurts my head" (not Supriya specifically) Mike
"Whiny Supreya" Bill Kenna
"slow down his pace so Supriya can keep up" Andrew
"She's a Liberal" Omario
"Slideshow Supriya has got to go. Zero on air personality. I don't want to hear how she came from Montreal and had strict Indian parents again. She belongs on CBC radio overnights in Nunavut." LongtimeListnrFirstTimeCaller"
"I would rather listen to fingernails on a chalkboard than the infantile drivel posited by Supriya... ugh." Ted in Toronto
"Can't stand Supriya" Ssedogma1960
"Suypria god her conversation is sooooo boring." Sue

It looks as though the common theme here is that her voice is annoying. Which is a valid criticism of an on-air personality if I've ever heard one. Some people have great 'radio voices' (think Andy Barrie), others simply do not. Nothing about her ethnicity, though.

February 23, 2018 @ 10:10 AM

bsmntdwllr73

@Hamish Grant
The comment referring to her 'belonging on a CBC station in Nunavut" speaks loudly enough for
itself!! Would most of these comments be made if she were white, regardless of how annoying her
voice supposedly is (not a listener of her previous show, so I don't have an informed opinion). Can't
recall if you were one of the commenters in that thread, but you sure seemed to go to a lot of cut
and paste trouble to shoot my comment down!! Perhaps I could have phrased my thoughts better,
but that also doesn't mean that I'm not partially right!

February 23, 2018 @ 10:18 AM

Hamish Grant

The Nunavut comment is like saying someone in disfavour with the Russian government will get sent to Siberia, or when a base commander tells the incompetent corporal he'll be commanding the motor pool in Death Valley if he screws up one more time.

I don't like to see racism anywhere but I don't like to see unsupported accusations of racism, either.

February 23, 2018 @ 10:47 AM

bsmntdwllr73

@Hamish Grant
You're entitled to your own opinion, but the tone and vinegar in some of those comments went
beyond simple disliking a person's voice and perhaps their political slant. I didn't signal anyone
out individually, but bias/racism and discrimination can still be evident even if only with the
slightest twinge. Heck, some of those folks would probably cop to it if only they were asked!!
Perhaps we should all just sit back and wait for the all-knowing WCI to weigh in on this issue if the
spirit moves him!!!

February 23, 2018 @ 10:55 AM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

I personally think the backlash against Supriya has more to do with her progressive leanings than her race, but it's a worthwhile conversation considering she's the only personality on the station that isn't white.

More than willing to defer to you on this one, Mike. Perhaps I should just stick to KOTJ

If I could take that same person, with her voice and ethnicity, and make her a staunch Conservative with a capital C, I'd bet 640 listeners would be less angry.

bsmntdwllr73

@Mike
One thing's for certain: Much more heated sport and political discourse and less KOTJ (boo!!!!) would probably make a lot of folks happy on here!!! Is it any wonder that myself alongside many others

@ Bsmtdwllr - Wanting the PC in power over the Liberals who have done nothing but spend our money filling their friends pockets for the past 10+ years doesn't make me a Ted Nugent listening Trump supporting redneck. Far from it, I despise Trump and his ilk with every fiber of my being.

I'm firmly in the camp of anyone but Wynne. If I thought the NDP had a chance of winning, I might vote that way, but they don't and at this point the Liberals have proven themselves as corrupt and nepotistic as the worst members of the GOP down south.

And remember...in terms of policy, social leanings and budgetary plans, our PC party is on PAr with the Democrats in the states. We don't have a political party that goes as far right as the GOP in the US. American Democrats would find Canadian Liberals to be leftist pinko's.

Kindly remember that I didn't individually single anyone out. And I certainly have no problem

Urooj Islam

The whole comment section of the 640 news post is dog whistle central. Supriya might not be a good fit for 640's audience but very few of the criticisms are about her actual ability as a broadcaster.

February 23, 2018 @ 1:26 PM

bsmtndwllr73

@Mike
Once again, this is obviously a passionate topic for a lot of people, but it does appear as if
she is being attack from all sides (at least in your comment sections!!!). Not at all familiar
with her work other than what I've read about on here or in the Matt Gurney Deep Dive, but
your earlier point about the lack of racial diversity at AM640 is spot on. This is not a subject
that I usually tend to get into, but the personal nature of some these comments (and here
come the haters in 3,2,1...!!!) about Supriya have forced me upon my very tarnished steed!!!

AM talk radio hosts in Toronto are very, very white. 590 just replaced two white guys with two white guys to remain 100% white, 640 is all white (except for Supriya), 1010 is all white and 1050 is all white.

Supriya is the lone exception.

February 23, 2018 @ 1:30 PM

bsmntdwllr73

@Mike
Well, not that this will help matters much, but as a middle-aged white Jewish dude on the
supposedly high-end of the Autism Spectrum (yeah, right!!!), I certainly don't feel represented
in the media, least of all on local talk radio. Often feels like there are a large percentage of folks
who only want to hear their own opinions and voices, and are unwilling to even remotely consider
views quite different to their own. Also, they have no problem knocking other people down, but
the minute you call them on their own b.s. (sadly, myself sometimes included), the self-righteous
indignation rears its ugly head once again!!

February 23, 2018 @ 1:35 PM

Philly-Bob

@bsmtdwllr - there certainly are some of those types on here. I take no offense to nothing, mostly I'm getting sick of the partisan "you're with us or you're against us" attitude from a lot of people in our society. Gone are the days of the "centerist" I am not left, I am not right, I am all about us taking care of each other as a society.

There are asseholes on both sides of the isle (see Trump AND Trudeau, 2 completely different types of assholes, but assholes nonetheless).

The fact that I think there should be stricter rules on gun ownership in the US goes hand in hand with my opinion that if you can successfully jump through all the hoops the RCMP will put you through, then by all means own a gun.

The fact that I think welfare should be available to all people who need it, goes hand in hand with my opinion that if you are on welfare, and physically/mentally capable of working, then you should have to spend a few days a week doing drudge work for the government, leaving a few days to also find a job. (note: if you are on welfare and completing education/job training, then have at it)

The fact that I strongly agree with the #metoo movement and everything it stands for goes hand in hand with my opinion that simply being accused shouldn't be enough to bury you. And if someone is falsely accused and it is proven that the accusations were false and done with malice, that there should be repercussions for the accuser.

But, of course, the fact that I'm a centerist pisses off people on both sides....

@Philly-Bob
All very good points, but as far as working when on some kind of social assistance, it's not
always possible or financially feasible, for a number of reasons. In my own personal case,
I had a very difficult two year battle almost a decade ago in order to reinstate my long-held
ODSP benefits. Asperger's is still largely misunderstood by many people, and in my case it
basically means "Book Smart, People Stupid"(!!). Although I am supposedly fairly intelligent
and able to do a lot more than I am currently, without real direction, encouragement and
support it is a never-ending uphill, daily struggle.

P.S., I'm glad that you think that I'm funny (believe me, it is usually very intentional on my
part), and I'm very appreciative that I have this open forum to share a little bit of my unique
view(s) with the world. If life was more fair and I had a different type of go-getter personality,
I'd like to think that I would have pursued my comedic/literary bliss towards a more satisfactory
outcome.

bsmntdwllr73

@Mike
Yeah, I know that my peeps are prevalent in the media both out in front and behind the
scenes. Should have made it a lot more clearer that I was referring to the Spectrum end of
things.

February 23, 2018 @ 1:58 PM

Philly-Bob

@ Dweller - That is why i put the caveat of physically/mentally able to work. I know all about Asperger's. My son is high level ADHD and at one point he was being tested for Asperger's, please know that you aren't alone, there is a larger community out there than you might think. But yes it is absolutely an uphill battle that I am fighting for my son every day.

For what it's worth, Sheldon Cooper is one of his hero's and he plans on being a scientist himself.

February 23, 2018 @ 2:04 PM

bsmntdwllr73

@Philly-Bob
As per Sheldon Cooper, CBS doesn't have the Cojones to finally come out and label
him as on the Spectrum. Much like the Good Doctor and Abed on Community years ago,
most portrayals are on the extreme side of things, and do no favours to the wide number
of us who find ourselves struggling in the middle. Today's parents are a lot more informed
and perhaps have more references and each other to lean on, whereas the children of the
late seventies and early eighties are largely left to fend for ourselves emotionally, socially,
and professionally (if at all possible, usually not). Sometimes I get a little tired of the parents
of this new breed of Spectrum kids, as they don't seem to have a clue what the rest of us have
gone through and will continue to go through. You don't sound like one of these folks. Good luck to your son!!

February 23, 2018 @ 2:14 PM

Fret not, lifelong fan of the For Better or For Worse comic strip!! The strip has been rerun
in chronological order with improved/updated art since the end of the original run at the end
of August 2008. I, for one, wonder how Michael's friend Lawrence is doing!!!

February 23, 2018 @ 2:27 PM

Philly-Bob

@ Dweller - you are correct, things were a lot harder for kids of our generation (I was born in '81) and there are a lot more resources out there for this generation. While I completely understand how frustrating that can be for someone who didn't have to resources available to them, I hope you might find some solace in the fact that my son will hopefully not face as many of the challenges that you did as society understands him better.

Keep that sense of humor and I hope things improve for you brother!

February 23, 2018 @ 2:35 PM

bsmntdwllr73

@Philly-Bob
Oh, I was in the system from an early age so it's not that the resources weren't available, it's
just that they weren't the correct ones.! Polio might be a distant memory in most parts of the
world, but my brother knows a geneticist specializing in autism research. According to this
person the eradication of ASD is beyond a pipe dream. The problem with Asperger's is that
it is often (basically) invisible amongst those of us who are on the higher end of the Spectrum,
so it is not always taken as seriously. Being thrown back under the umbrella of ASD doesn't help
matters much, either!! P.S., wasn't diagnosed until I was 36 (9 years ago!!). Thanks for the support!!

Philly Bob: Time to get off the Trudeau and Trump are a-holes but of a different cloth BS. You've been touting that garbage for years about Trudeau. Before it was a silver spoon in Trudeau's mouth you had a problem with. Then you cried the country would implode with Trudeau as prime minister. Canada is still standing and the economy was roaring on all cylinders in 2017. So he and the liberals can't be that bad,

And enough of the false equivalency, Trump is racist baby. End of story.

Yes there are liberal blunders, but any government in power today is not without those blunders in a world of hyper click bait. You ever notice how many articles say so and so was blasted. Or is being blasted. It's all to save print media. The articles themselves sensationalise otherwise trivial non-important subjects.

As for democrats in the US being the same as PC's here. Perhaps that is true in the south, but much less true in the north of the US. Even then it doesn't matter because we don't have guns like they do so nobody has to deal with that garbage in Canada.

The 640 forum is no different than any right wing group in Canada. Facebook, twitter or any other comment section with a right lean. More than half the garbage I read on there is full of dog whistle comments or blatant racism and extreme views meant to mighty whitey. It's sad, but I remember a lot of the right wing saying that the left had all the time in the world to protest and come up with petitions. If you look at right leaning comment boards I believe that the rights base has much more time on their hands.

I would certainly have preferred her be an MPP first. Her Father was a dolt so there's that I suppose. But at least her background may somewhat prepare her for office.

Oh Philly Bob. If you had knowledge of the cpg industry youd know why those plants closed. It has nothing to do with a good or bad economy. Those plants survived how many recessions until now. They closed because of automation. New plants being built can do the job of +6 plants. Maple leaf foods closed over 10 plants across canada 6 years ago and can run all production from their facility in Hamilton.

Read up on Kraft Heinz. They just had a shit year globally. And eff them for what they did in st Thomas. I only buy Frenchs now but again that had nothing to do with canadian economy.

And Kelloggs. You know how many people aren't buying cereal anymore? They dont want or need to stuff processed sugar down the throats of children anymore. It's a colossal melt down of their core business.

The restaurant down the street from my house closed Jan 5th. I don't take that and extrapolate that the entire industry is failing. I look at the fact that the restaurant was always empty and served terrible food.

bsmntdwllr73 recently mentioned crowds of homeless in the downtown libraries. Just in the last couple of weeks, at least in the areas of the western part of the city I frequent like The Junction, Bloor West Village, Roncesvalles, etc., there seems to have been an unusually sudden large increase in their number. And to me the newbies almost all oddly seem to be distinctly American, saying "y'all" and just generally looking and acting far more like the homeless you see in American cities. Is it even possible that there could have been a recent large influx of them somehow making their way across the border?

@H.o.E., @Mike
I live in Parkdale and frequent all the areas you've mentioned; since I don't usually get engaged
by these folks (unless it is for a smoke, LOL!!!), not really sure about whether or not there has been
an influx of American homeless people lately. I've never had a passport and I haven't been to the
states since the summer of 2001 (happily went to New York about 15 times in 6 and a half years
before then). Ah, sweet memories of a fuller wallet and a more open U.S. border!! Also, the issue
of multitudes of homeless in the downtown library branches has only increased over the last 10 to
12 years. They can also not surprisingly be found in great numbers even in branches north of
Eglinton. Not trying to be a prick, but this doesn't always provide the best sensory experience for
the rest of us. Not too mention the potential for additional bedbug exposure. The Yorkville branch replaced a lot of their couch-style furniture presumably for that reason in the last year or so.

Two more random experiences from my Spectrum-skewed tiny corner of the world:
On Thursday afternoon I ventured out to Scarborough Town Centre to see my Boo
and redeem a mall gift card. Since i arrived early I stationed myself in the area between the
station and the mall. On several recent trips I made a most pleasant aural discovery. Over
the P.A. system, a non-stop soundtrack of late 1970's, early '80s smooth jazz and funk was
being piped out over the public airwaves, Some of the tunes I even recognized, even if there
was a little bit of Kenny G-esque soprano sax included in the mix. Later on my Sweetie made
the keen observation that the music was probably for the benefit of the nearby skaters on the
civic centre ice rink. Either way, I would definitely consider going back there just to sit and enjoy
the tunes!

In unrelated matters, an hour ago I was walking up Yonge Street from Queen to Dundas and I
encountered a rather long line in front of Foot Locker. Saw a similar sight up the street from there
a few weeks back at that fancy shoe shack in the Atrium on Bay. Have never been a kicks fanatic
(see, I'm hip to the kids' lingo!!), and can't imagine presumably spending hundreds of dollars on
a pair of shoes that tens of thousands of other 'unique' folks will also be wearing!! My stance is the
same with regards to all those celebrity fashion pop-ups that turn up on a near weekly basis.

@ Toronto Mike -- Well, as was seen last seen last year with the hundreds of asylum seekers showing up in Montreal from the U.S, it's apparently not very difficult to get across the border by some way other than lining up at a legitimate crossing and showing your passport. But I still find it difficult to envision these homeless guys all having been able to somehow make it on their own to Toronto from some American city, and equally difficult to imagine how or why anyone could be helping them to do it in groups.

Idea: ask them what their favourite Tragically Hip song is.... if they don't have an answer, they're American.

Further to my comments about 640....as a long time listener to 640..I will say again if it's not broke don't fix it...Race,politics or gender have nothing to do with it...Staffords show worked....the morning show failed..So are they saying it was because of Gurney...so why not either get rid of both...or pair Supreya with Kelly in the afternoon hey there's an idea.

It's actually one of the few things I agree with Wilner on. You should always use the terminology applicable to each sport, there's no such thing as an unrestricted free agent in baseball. You're just a free agent.

Although, It's not as bad as puckheads calling baseball clubhouses or football and basketball locker rooms "dressing rooms" though.

If you're a reporter, sure.... but if you're just a fan and you say "unrestricted free agent" when there are no restricted free agents, whatevs salad!

Philly-Bob

Joey Bats should sign a 1 day deal and gracefully retire. I am forever grateful for what he did for this franchise and I don't want to see him lessen his legacy by playing longer than he should. History will remember the good times and he'll go down as one of the greats.

February 24, 2018 @ 3:24 PM

Sorry...that one day deal should of course be with the jays

In a sport without restricted free agency, the term unrestricted free agent is just redundant.

Well, my Habs lost. Bummer. They lost in a fricken shootout. They blew it. My Coyotes won though. That was a great game. Anyway, my Cavs will win today and my Coyotes will win tonight. Well, got the baseball problem solved I think. I got it fixed so I can talk to my Amazon echo and it will ask me what team I want. That's good. My Indians won yesterday. They beat my Diamondbacks though. My Orioles played a split squad and lost one, but tied one.

February 25, 2018 @ 8:33 AM

Lou

Don't know where you bike Mike, but these roads in TO are horrible. I have never seen so many potholes, bumps, rough patches on the inside curb lane, etc. You have to actually look way ahead when you are biking, & then look behind so no cars are there when you move over, or else you actually slow right down. Just Brutal!!! Thnx John Tory.

& while biking the other day, finally had to pass by Bloor/Bathurst. What a historic tragedy. Honest Ed's has officially been destroyed. Guess now we will see these concrete/steel monoliths with street level box stores. No more facades, no more character buildings. Just boring architecture.

I've noticed when driving that the potholes are really bad right now. I drive an old rustbucket and I can hear chunks of my car falling off when I hit one of these craters.

When biking, I've been sticking to the waterfront trail, and it's not bad at all.

February 25, 2018 @ 6:04 PM

Cheryl

Well, another loss for my Cavs. That's not good. My Coyotes lost as well. My Indians only tied. My Orioles and Diamondbacks lost. It was not a good sports day at all. Anyway, hopefully my Habs and Nets win tonight. I need wins.

Have the Fan590 announced this years radio broadcast team? I have nothing against Mr. Wilner as a pre-game and in game update man, but for me at least, not sure he has the flow and cadence in his voice for an everyday play by play man. I know it is Spring Training, but I found this weekend's radio calls were very droll and boring.

Not yet.

Mike Wilner and Scott Richmond are doing the spring training games. But Jerry Howarth was never going to Dunedin this year.

Toronto sports GMs are such chickenshits when things are going well. Only in this city would you have two teams legitimately in the hunt for a championship who would do absolutely nothing to improve their chances.

This city misses Alex Anthopoulos' massive balls.

But we've only just bounced off the bottom. How much of the future should we trade away to win right now when this is only year #2 after drafting Matthews?

Can you imagine what the Sens wanted for Karlsson? It's not like the window is closing here.... we only just pried it open!

February 26, 2018 @ 4:54 PM

Cheryl

My Habs lost. It was 0 to 0 through three periods and overtime, and they lost in a shootout. That sucks. My Suns lost, but my Nets won. Tonight my Nets play my Cavs. I want my Cavs to win. My Suns also lost last night. In baseball, my Indians and Orioles lost, but my Diamondbacks won.

@Urooj

I am completely content with the Leafs doing just what they did.

Remember the early 2000's where they would load up on all the big names (Owen Nolan etc.) and have ziltch to show for it ?

The chemistry seems very good right now. The guys are gelling at just the right time.

February 27, 2018 @ 8:27 AM

Beatts

@Cheryl have you talked to your connections with the Coyotes today?

Did they realise there was a trading deadline yesterday?

February 27, 2018 @ 8:36 AM

Neil Clarke Warren

The NHL "Trade Deadline " shows on the 2 sports tv stations in Canada have now become level with the last 2 minutes of a NBA playoff game.

NBA playoff game = tune in last 2 minutes all you need to see
NHL Trade Deadline= tune in 2 minutes to 3pm all you need (NOT 7 hours of shirt.)

Urooj - my limited Raptors knowledge tells me we can't really move any of the guys without blowing things up in a big and bad way. JV turned it around in a big way, and our bench is wicked. I am happy we got rid of Bruno, and I wait to see if they add a 15th man - who will not be Vince or Chris Bosh. We made the good moves last season and last off season!

February 27, 2018 @ 2:49 PM

Urooj Islam

@JJ

No, you are absolutely right about the Raptors. I was just being a whiny sports fan and venting.

The Raptors have no cap space and don't have a first round pick in 2018 so they didn't have many assets to make a move. And like you mentioned, their bench is rolling so they're probably not eager to move a young piece like Wright, Siakam, Van Vleet, Poeltl, etc.

On the other hand, the Leafs have a bunch of picks and room for improvement in a sport where the championship picture is wide open and won't come down to LeBron or the Warriors like in the NBA so I guess most of my frustration is directed at their trade deadline inactivity.

February 27, 2018 @ 3:27 PM

Philly-Bob

@ Urooj - I hear your frustration, but what would you have had them do? The team is gelling very well, we're getting production for all 4 lines. We absolutely could have used a top 4 defense, but the price was higher than I'd want to pay (ie. Marner). I suppose they could have moved Bozak or JVR as to not just lose them in free agency. However, all they would have gotten for them are draft picks or low end prospects, but then where do you get the point production from those two come playoff time?

I for one am happy they didn't make any knee jerk reactions. The team is doing well and it should be an interesting play offs.

However, this time next year will be a different story.....

Have to agree about non stop KOTJ’s. You might need to change the podcast to KOTJ. Not a fan for the most part. Now it’s just all the time. Love the chats and deep dives. When is good ol Ann Rohmer coming on? I recall she was to come in the summer then the fall. And some cockamamie story about resting her voice. PLEEEEEASSSE. Noticed she has not been on CP24 in more than 8 or 9 months at least. And whatever on earth happened to Paul Bliss.

Ann Rohmer tells me she's coming on in March.

If you enjoyed Steve Anthony's first episode, you'll enjoy his second appearance. It's the same thing until we play his 10 favourite songs, and if you really hate that, you can always stop it there.

February had a lot of KOTJ episodes (which I adore) but none of the next five scheduled episodes are KOTJ.

Update

Not sure but I think Mark Irvine's been a regular poster on this site. I believe most recently as WCI. Apparently he's on life support now at Toronto General. Apologies if I have the wrong person but it's on Mark Irvine's FB.

February 27, 2018 @ 8:35 PM

Jody Thornton

@Update.

Yes It's absolutely Mark. He's been seen posting as Irv, WCI and under other monikers. It appears the situation is rather serious.

I was going to mention it on SOWNY and Quad Cities, where he often posted. I was hoping to actually meet him in person since he returned to Ontario. And while I know he has been a tad contrarian for some, he still does bring value to the table. I often walk away with something to think about after reading his posts; even when I disagree.

I hope he'll pull through.

Google's doing this new thing with Adsense they call Smart Ads. Basically, they're putting ads wherever they think they'll convert. I might turn it off.

As for Irv, he's been commenting here frequently for a decade now. Here's his first comment from 2008: http://www.torontomike.com/2008/06/alan_cross_out_as_program_dire.html#comment-041846

Five years ago, I threatened to ban him because i tired of the abuse: http://www.torontomike.com/2013/11/im_banning_irv.html

Back in 2013, when I had had enough and almost shut this entire blog down, he stopped commenting on his own for a pretty good length of time, and when he came back, he was a slightly kinder and gentler version of himself. So I let it be, although I've had to delete a few of his comments that still cross the line.

I revisited that post about banning Irv and saw a bunch of commenters that used to comment like crazy but have moved on over the years. I was also reminded that "Get Your OJ" read something Mike Stafford wrote on this site and called Corus to complain about him. That's crazy!

If this place didn't get tamer and more placid, it wouldn't be around anymore. :)

Sad to hear about Irv- thanks update for letting everyone know.

Urooj Islam - I think the Leafs although they have the $$$$, have done so well maybe they don't want to rock the boat too much now. they've undergone so much from what I have observed, that perhaps they're just happy to see what this year brings, and next year too.

Our Raptors bench is amazing and I am so glad we got them - best bench in the league I would say (I don't know enough to really back that up though LOL) - we have gelled so well! What drives me bonkers is people thinking we need Vince or Bosh back... We can do better for veterans I think.

The Canadiens have points in 5 straight games, I think Cheryl knows that they are slowly sabotaging their draft lottery chances and won't address them out of frustration.
