I'm first. Goody goody gumballs. I love being first. How about those Coyotes. They had a comeback and won in OT 4 to 3. That's great. My Habs didn't do so great though. Again. Why isn't Carey Price as good anymore. I kept saying the price is right. Well, my Cavs made some trades. They will have some new faces, Larry Nance, Rodney Hood, Jordan Clarkson. No more Dwyane Wade or Isaiah Thomas, Channing Fry, Iman Shumpert, Jae Crowder, or Derrick Rose. I hope this will make my Cavs better, but who knows. 25 cm of snow on the weekend. Well, I'm not planning to go anywhere, just stay inside, bum around.

Excited for the Olympics, but the massive time difference is a bit of a downer in terms of watching. Go Canada!

February 9, 2018 @ 8:38 AM

@ Rick - between the lack of NHL players and the fact that I'm either awake at an ungodly hour or watching replays of live events, I've never been less excited about an Olympic year.

Don't get me wrong, I want our athletes to dominate, but it just doesn't feel like past years to me.

However, yes GO CANADA!!!!

Looks like I'm going to be losing some sleep!

I watched the figure skating last night. There's a sport I pretty much ignore for four years and then watch like crazy during the Olympics. I caught some of the women's moguls, too... I'm all in on these games.

I watched most of the opening ceremonies this morning, except for when I had to get the two little ones to daycare.

Go Canada!

February 9, 2018 @ 8:56 AM

James Edgar

I've never been all that excited for the Olympics and this time is no different really. I was a little more excited for Vancouver,Calgary and Montreal but that just makes me a homer i think.

I'll probably watch some but i might not as well.

So thanks to the KOTJ episodes I've been discovering and rediscovering a lot of music lately.

I band I've had a listen too quite a bit this week is Guns n Roses. i have to say that after initially being pleasantly surprised at how much i was enjoying them I'm pretty underwhelmed by their catalogue

Appetite for destruction aside there's very little i find to my taste after a couple of listens and aside from Welcome to the jungle (Which is definitely in my top 100 ) even that's not really all that great.

I haven't listened to every single song and i may find a few more i like but yeah i'm underwhelmed.

February 9, 2018 @ 9:12 AM

Yippy-ki-oh I had trouble finding T. M. It was hiding again, but I am still First but no certificate.

Raptors - Please don't bring VinceSanity back. He quit on the team, his teammates & city of TO in mid season years ago. Now he knows the hour glass has virtually no sand left & is grasping for another chance.
Vince you made your bed awhile ago with the Raptors, but someone else is sleeping in it.
I can see the same happening with Lebron in near future with the Cavs.

@James Edgar

I'm with you on the Olympics. I paid semi-attention when they were on Canadian soil, including Montreal, which is sort of Canadian soil. This Olympics just doesn't do it for me, and as I have mentioned before, this former sports nut has lost interest in pretty much everything in the last few years.

But anyway, GO CANADA!!!

Anyone else rooting for every Ontario PC leadership candidate other than Doug Ford to be a woman?

The debates will be pure comedy if this holds up.

February 9, 2018 @ 10:42 PM

stephen in niagara

No matter who is in the race, Ontario PC leadership is a bona fide shit show. Not just because who is running, but more so because of the people voting. Saw it with Tory. Saw it with Hudak. Saw it with Brown. We will see it again.

Partisans are their own worst enemies.

What this election needs is solid independent candidates, no party ties, no baggage, no passengers.

February 10, 2018 @ 6:52 AM

My Cavs won last night. That's great. My Cavs were playing a great game and that's great. Now hopefully tonight my Suns and Nets as well as Habs and Coyotes all win. I need them all to win. More snow. Well, I'm not going out in it. It's not worth walking on slushy sidewalks. I had enough of that on Wednesday. The city isn't very good at cleaning sidewalks.

February 10, 2018 @ 7:47 AM

Perhaps some of the Montreal Candadiens will be available to come to Toronto and help
keep our city streets relatively snow-free, if by some weird reason we have an extremely late
winter this year?!? Don't think that they'll have much else worthwhile to do come mid-April or so!!!

February 10, 2018 @ 10:23 AM

For those following all the sexual harassment stuff, Bob Lefsetz has been on it for a week. He’s actually posted his lawyers response about legal threat. This is exactly what #MeToo is about regardless I’d what a bunch of cynical old men have to say.

February 10, 2018 @ 10:25 AM

First off, Bob Lefsetz is a bloated, old, hypocritical blowhard!! For every two interesting
columns there are at least ten of him glad-handing, name-dropping and blatantly sucking
up to his famous friends and associates! This dude could barely manage the likes of Blackie
Lawless of W.A.S.P. back in his old record label shilling days!

May I be as so bold to humbly suggest that you reach out (if at all possible) to some of the SW1s
of Public Enemy infamy? They've probably been collecting unemployment for roughly going on
25 years or so now, and perhaps they could provide some cyber-security for the blog? Sadly, I
fear that we are on the verge of several more days of endless "Old White Man-itis" accusations
and the like!! P.S., speaking of PE, whatever became of Professor Griff and Sister Souljah?!?

February 10, 2018 @ 10:46 AM

Excuse my ignorance, but, of course, Public Enemy's infamous security force were the S1Ws!!!

February 10, 2018 @ 10:51 AM

Congratulations on your honourable mention, even if it took a bit of sleuthing on my part to
finally find it!! Fun fact: I once placed eighth(!) out of 7 contestants in my age group in a track
and field meet at the group home in which I was liviing in at the time. That "Thanks For Trying"
participation ribbon" sure came in handy a little later on when I had an impromptu nose
bleed! Frankly it has almost all been downhill since that fateful late spring day in 1980!!!

It's truly an honour getting an honourable mention as one of the most influential Canadians in baseball.

February 10, 2018 @ 1:08 PM

Yes, you totally deserve it as you are definitely not one of those fair weather Blue Jay fans!!

February 10, 2018 @ 1:12 PM

Somehow I doubt the S1Ws would defend a blog full of old white men. Besides my hacker crew lives under the 110. If you get that reference I’m impressed

February 10, 2018 @ 1:23 PM

Prophets of Rage? Also, why post or read other people's posts if you have it in so hard for 'Tired
Old White Men? What's your persuasion? If I might be so bold (and foolish!) to ask? As a middle-
aged white man with an invisible disability (ASD) I get a little tired of being lumped in with that
particular group, as I've never had the influence, power, or bad behaviours of that bunch. Perhaps
I'm too sensitive in this regard, but there must be a better way for you to express your opinions
without being so antagonistic all the time?!? You get more with honey, or so they say!!

JJ, Urooj Islam, Cheryl and many other regular commenters might object to the "old white men" label. You know, on account of the fact none of them are white men.

February 10, 2018 @ 1:58 PM

What a twist!! I never would have guessed that Cheryl wasn't part of that particularly heated
group (spoiler alert next time, PLEASE!)!! I think that it is all good in her world as long as her teams
all post an overall-winning, and as long as Bob Seger and John Mellencamp both live and continue
to record new music for the next 50 years or so!!!

February 10, 2018 @ 2:14 PM

Hey Mike hoe about one of your open mike commentators kotjs with you. I love the concept and it is a great idea. Maybe you pick one per month or every other month. I have crazy eclectic musical tastes and volunteer myseld

February 10, 2018 @ 2:24 PM

So basement Dweller you just admitted there is an “old white guy itis” issue. You just aren’t one of them. And u don’t need to be old or white to be part of it. And you said you aren’t part of it. So why so upset at me? I’m not discriminatory. I annoy and pick on everyone. The old boys club deserves a boot in the ass.

February 10, 2018 @ 5:03 PM

Yeah Mike how come I can’t be on KOTJs. I’m musically diverse and ppl that hate me would listen solely to be able to tear me apart. Plus I like craft beer AND I drank Great Lakes way before you.

@Urooj, Christine Elliott should have been the PC leader, but the process can be gamed as with what we saw with Brown, the PC'S need her experience and a female to counter Kathleen Wynne and the Liberals.

February 10, 2018 @ 9:12 PM

I am not involved in this old white men thing. I don't know what it is about. My Habs and Coyotes lost last night as well as my Suns and Nets. Well, my Cavs play this afternoon. They better win. Hope they do. Yes, Bob Seger and John Mellencamp won't die any time soon. They'll live for 10 to 20 more years, believe me. Mor snow on the way. Well, I'm not going out in it. The city is very bad at cleaning sidewalks. That should not be something the city should cut back on.

February 11, 2018 @ 8:07 AM

Neil Clarke Warren

If George Smitherman was Mayor the sidewalks in the city would be clear of snow & litter 24/7.
Bob & John would both live to a 100.
But,that hockey team from quebec would still suck the big one !

February 11, 2018 @ 10:15 AM

The province has really slipped in clearing snow for some reason. I'm guessing it's because the government here is so strapped. The city needs to do what Calgary does. YOU, the homeowner, clear the snow or the city does it for you, and bills you.

February 11, 2018 @ 11:35 PM

Well, that's an idea. If the city clears snow, then they should bill you. They're not very good at clearing snow, and we have so much of it. Well, my Cavs won last night. That's great. The new Cavs are much better than the Cavs were. Anyway, hopefully my Suns and Nets will win tonight. They need to do that.

February 12, 2018 @ 7:52 AM

James Edgar

I'm pretty sure that technically if you don't clear your snow and the city does do it for you you are supposed to be billed. at least in parts of the city that don't have automatically have sidewalk clearing. Before amalgamation some places like North York did and some like York did not.

I have no idea if they even try to enforce this now. Judging by the side walks in some parts i'd say no.

February 12, 2018 @ 10:07 AM

Doesn't look like the city does it much. I was looking at driveway's and sidewalks yesterday and I'd guess half were finished. Roads were no better on side streets with a fair number of cars stuck in the street. I was watching people try to walk in it yesterday & push strollers through it. Brutal.

dale - I agree with you, we do not need Vince back. He can come retire on a one or two day contract - but that is about it. Why would we bring him back when he has admitted he isn't ring chasing??

James Edgar - my mom called 311 and was told the city should be clearing our sidewalks - we live in East Scarborough. I hope there isn't going to be a big bill come spring :/

I am looking forward to hopefully getting Bruno Mars tickets on Friday...!

February 12, 2018 @ 11:41 AM

@ WCI - JT looks and acts way to much like Papa to be anything but the spawn of PET......on a related note, the National Enquirer says that Elvis is alive and well in Bocca Raton

February 12, 2018 @ 1:01 PM

I don't think JT is much like Dad at all. Dad was actually well spoken and intelligent. Justin is the Canadian version of Dubya. Dad could handle the media including the famous "watch me" comment. In fact he seemed to relish it. Justin is just the opposite.

BTW, I believe it's Boca (not bocca) as in Boca meaning mouth. And Elvis would be pretty damn old.

February 12, 2018 @ 2:30 PM

Regardless of what else happens in the Olympics Mark Morris has to be our flag bearer at final ceremonies with what he has accomplished in the last year even not knowing if he would ever walk again let alone win bronze. An inspiration.

It looks like Q107 is reevaluating its morning show. I belong to the Angus Reid Forum, and have been sent two lengthy paid surveys in the past few weeks about the 3 hosts and how they come across - funny, too snarky, intelligent, juvenile, etc. - and asking and how much I enjoyed certain audio clips. Seems Q is sparing no expense for detailed input.

February 12, 2018 @ 8:50 PM

Was sent the same survey last week from an independent not affiliated with Q107 but asked many questions about their morning show. I also spared no expense with my comments. 1 year ago on Valentines day Jennifer started & after 1st week What The Hell!!
Chorus must make changes overall.

February 12, 2018 @ 10:19 PM

My Nets and Suns both lost again. My Coyotes won though. Tonight my Cavs play their last game before the all star break. All star breaks suck. They really do. Anyway, the city doesn't care about sidewalks. They only care about highways which are important as well, but sidewalks for people to walk on. Just bring on spring already. I hate winter. It's too much.

February 13, 2018 @ 7:05 AM

@ howigan - I think Q107 should spend some more time worrying about the music they play. I thought is was supposed to be a Classic Rock Station. I'm hearing way to much 80's synth Adult Contemporary being played's sounding more and more like CHFI every day.

February 13, 2018 @ 8:54 AM

@Philly-Bob Yup. They're still trying to tweak their music mix too; the first survey I got had a bunch of lists of different artists, and asked us to choose our ideal mix. Some lists were all classic rock artists, and some mixed that up with '80s pop/rock, some had contemporary pop/rock. They asked which stations we think play the same old stuff, versus what stations come up with some good musical surprises. Also a bunch of Q slogans to choose from.

I feel like they're trying hard to find a new sweet spot and dedicated listenership without cloning Boom 97.3, because they feel that listeners are tired of classic rock. Good luck, I say.

February 13, 2018 @ 10:22 AM

@Philly-Bob that's the boom effect. Q is trying to do whatever it can to grab some of Boom's numbers

February 13, 2018 @ 11:45 AM

Not to be confused with the "Boon" effect.

That's where you act like a knob riding your bike in snowstorms.

February 13, 2018 @ 11:46 AM

Is there a legitimate Classic Rock Station left in Toronto??

February 13, 2018 @ 1:36 PM

Q107 isn't even a bare minimum shell of its once most legendary self. I've been listening on/off
for the past year or so and can't believe how lame their playlist has become. The Boom Effect
aside, an almost complete lack of any discernible edge is very frustrating. AC/DC, Guns N' Roses (not often) and Roth-era Van Halen is as heavy as it gets. Music from The Cure, Depeche Mode and other former targets of Q DJ ridicule/disdain don't help matters much. The lack of new music by core artists still heavily featured is also a joke. We're talking hundreds of great legacy artists and due to the Q's over-analyzed/stale Algorithms, the same 200 or so songs appear to be on continuous autopilot. As for the Djs, I'd keep Joanne Wilder, Al Joynes, and John Scholes and deep six the rest permanently!! Derringer lost his edge a long time ago and we're all probably in agreement on the failed Jennifer Valentyne experiment, right?!? After all, there's an obvious reason why she worked so well on TV for so many years!!!

February 13, 2018 @ 2:30 PM

twins from bolton

100% agree. Wilder, Joynes & Scholes & did you forget Andy Frost as probably the best of the bunch.
The rest should have been gone a while ago.

February 13, 2018 @ 2:35 PM

@twins from bolton
Andy Frost knows his stuff but often feels like he phones it in. If not for the occasional
time stamp or pertinent bit of news. would be hard-press to separate his current
hosting duties from those back in the day ('cept the music was a whole lot more
enjoyable and rocking!!!)

This back and forth regarding the commercial is far too interesting to
simply remain a Twitter thread only!! Those commercials are beyond embarrassing!!
IMO, they're the modern equivalent of pet rocks and mood rings, merely a passing
fad for increasingly disconnected folks. And believe me, I've got a Ph.D in that particular
touchy subject!!

February 13, 2018 @ 2:46 PM

Fun fact: My late mother's sister-in-law has been a lifelong friend of the Wilner

February 13, 2018 @ 2:50 PM

@ Twins - I guess I'm going to have to make a classic rock playlist or something. I'm finding I like the music less and less on my presets (102.1, 97.7, 107.9, 107.1)

I guess I'm getting these days and their shitty music!

February 13, 2018 @ 3:26 PM

We have a decent classic rock station in Cobourg you can listen to online.

Like any station though, they play the same songs and after a month you'll want to switch around

Perennial favourite media hack Steve Simmons is at it again - his latest column proclaiming that certain Olympic medals aren't "real" has triggered a poop show not seen since his Kessell column.

In true Simmons style, the column was poorly researched, contains multiple factual errors, and generally comes across as something knocked off in about three minutes by a bitter old crank who's three pints into his daily lunch at the local pub.

February 13, 2018 @ 8:38 PM

3 pints in

@Sid_V ..

But nothing comes close to Howard Berger's "Auston Matthews is easily replaceable" comment.

If Simmons is 3 pints in, Berger has downed 3 bottles of Old Sailor.

Well, my Cavs won last night. That was a great game. Well, all star break for my Cavs. They don't play until a week from Thursday. That's a long all star break. My Coyotes also won last night. That's great. They are winning lots now. Well, there is one more basketball day before the break. My Nets and Suns better win tonight. Some warm weather on the way. Then more cold stuff. When will we have spring. Well, pitchers and catchers report. I hope my Indians, Orioles and Diamondbacks do really well this year.

February 14, 2018 @ 7:15 AM

Regarding those consumer DNA tests, they can provide three different types of results -- lists of others who match you to some degree, alleged ethnicity or "admixture" results, and medical or trait results.

Their ads all seem to inexplicably focus on the alleged ethnicity results, which are to say the least very subjective and therefore largely nonsense. It might be somewhat useful and interesting for people from a truly mixed -- as in part Asian, part African, part European -- background, but even then the percentages will vary with the results you get from the different companies. As for breaking things down further, such as telling people they are this percent from some particular part of Europe, I would tend to ignore them. People have been moving around Europe for thousands of years. One company will tell you that you are 30% Scandinavian and 0% English, and another company will have you as 0% Scandinavian and 40% English.

There seems to be some debate about how useful and accurate the medical and trait results are. I haven't read enough to form an opinion. Only one of the major companies (23andMe) does it, but apparently a list of medical results using data from the others can be obtained for US$5 from Promethease.

The one thing they do that does certainly work is the list of others you match, at least up to about third cousin level. I have been able to trace out the connection to five people who are second or third cousins. AncestryDNA presently has the largest database at over six million people and is therefore the most likely to get more of those matches. Other companies like 23andMe, FamilyTreeDNA, and MyHeritage all now have more than a million. That said, they all provide enormous online lists of matches that are largely useless once you get past the closest few at the top of the list, since matches beyond an estimated fourth cousin level are very tenuous. "It is uncertain whether this DNA Match is a distant relative, or is not related to you at all" is an exact quote I copied from the site of MyHeritage.
Here is a neutral website I saw pointed out elsewhere that compares the major testing companies in an easy to understand way.

Speaking of the inexplicably "angry old white man" thing -- I don't get it. As you get older, don't you get wiser and hopefully less aggressive and a little more "worldly" and tolerant? While searching for something else, I happened to briefly see the Facebook page of some guy about 80 years old in England, that presumably gets seen by almost no one but himself, with lots of blatantly silly anti-immigration, "bring back the Golliwogs" and other silly racist stuff. There was a "don't be a sheep" thing that makes me laugh at these type of guys in the way they encourage each other to think there's something admirably rebellious about being a racist clown. I guess it might be rebellious in the same way as a toddler throwing a tantrum, screaming "NO -- I'm going to be even more racist now" to any suggestion of it being stupid and backward.

February 14, 2018 @ 10:34 AM

I'd disagree. I think that age brings wisdom but older people are reticent to change. They like their old ideals just like they like their classic rock on a stick. Whether it's music, technology or social change, older people tend not to embrace it.

I am going to cut that out this year I hope.

February 15, 2018 @ 3:42 PM

Good luck on beating those dreaded ticketbots for your Bruno Mars concert ducats!
Perhaps you can lob a digital grenade(LOL!!) into the system and bypass/override their evil
ticket hoarding!! Just one question: What are friends?!?

February 15, 2018 @ 3:52 PM

I learned that lesson a very long time ago about trying to get people together to buy a bunch of tickets to a concert or sports event. A lot the time for the last 35 years as an adult I'll just go by myself.
I knew it even before I started high school, from my older brother. He would ask a bunch of his idiot friends about it, and about 12 of them would say "yeah, buy me a ticket. I'll give you the money in a couple of days". And knowing what idiots they were, he would only buy three or four tickets, and even then sometimes only one or two would actually follow through. I got to go to the first concerts I saw because of that, Thin Lizzy at Seneca College Field House (or whatever that place was called), and Black Sabbath and Van Halen in Niagara Falls NY.
