Goody, I'm first. My Cavs won last night by one measly point. Well, they won. My Coyotes lost though. Hopefully my Habs will win tonight. Come on, Habs. The Price is right. Carey Price will win tonight and tomorrow night. My Nets and Suns hopefully will win tonight.

I strongly urge all music lovers to listen to Dave Hodge share his 100 favourite songs of all-time. The man is a wealth of musical knowledge and his passion is incredible. It's here:

Now that Retrontario has made it big time (CBC Radio 1 appearance), can he divulge what software and hardware he uses, or recommends, to transfer from VCR tape to a digital file?

January 19, 2018 @ 9:37 AM

Dave Hodge needs to come back and present us with his alternative top 100 songs as soon as
possible!! Most enjoyable 106 minutes I've spent so far this year, not including the two day
period last week in which I attempted to categorize my extensive belly button lint collection!!

January 19, 2018 @ 10:09 AM

Listening to Dave Hodge nowwwwwwwww. Request: for returning guests can you include a link to previous appearances? I recall listening to a Dave Hodge podcast but I can't remember how far back it was but I do recall his passion for music both past and current which really surprised me.

I was in Dallas from Sun-Thurs this week. For is Dallas cold (tuesday they were actually 4 degrees C colder than T.O.

I met a few sports fans in Dallas and I have to say that Sports Radio whines a bit too much in Toronto. All I hear on The Fan 590 is how Toronto is disrespected in the US market. The guys I spoke with knew all about the Leafs, Raptors and Jays and commented that it was a good time to be a Fan in Toronto.

I think it boils down to our own inferiority complex to tell you the truth.....

The TTC's King Street pilot is undoubtedly a victim of its own pretzel-logic brand of success!!
This route was my preferred choice for my daily return to blessed Parkdale, but those darn
streetcars are always filled beyond capacity during downtown's never-ending rush hours.
And to think that there is potentially an insane plan to adopt these measures on Queen, Dundas
and College!! No matter how many of these streetcars are on the road in peak hours, it is nearly
impossible to secure a seat or protect a modicum of personal space (very important for keeping
my Spectrum insecurities in check!). Wise folks have flocked to King in order to escape the dreaded
veritable rush hour parking lot stylings of Queen West. P.S., I neither have the cash nor the inclination to visit that charmless joint with the bird-flipping ice mascot on King St, West! What's next, an ice statue of Michelangelo's David taking an icy leak?!?

Forgot to take credit for the above diatribe above, so sorry!!

Blind Dave

Dave Hodge and Ron MacLean were easily in my top ten pods of all time. I will catch the Hodge pod this weekend.

@Philly-Bob When I was on holiday in Florida in the mid-70's, and American asked me why Toronto sports teams always lost. It was a sincere question. No disrespect intended. In fact, I have been to the US many times and not once have I heard Canada put down in any way.

January 19, 2018 @ 8:36 PM

The Leafs have lost 4 in a row, but have 3 points in that span.

The NHL is absurd in so many ways, but this might be the worst. What kind of a league dramatically lowers the stakes in its games?

31 teams in the league. 7 have a sub-.500 record. This doesn't happen in a real league. It's participation ribbon stuff.

January 19, 2018 @ 11:50 PM

Gary M

Philly Bob, I think that's exactly right. Though only in relation to the U.S. To the rest of Canada, we are the U.S. and everyone else has the inferiority complex.

January 19, 2018 @ 11:53 PM

Well, my Habs won last night. That's great. They finally won, but no Carey Price, Ante Niemi instead. Well, great that they won. My nets and Suns also won. Today my Cavs, Habs and Coyotes will all win. Let's do this.

January 20, 2018 @ 7:38 AM

Very sad news about Tom Petty indeed. At some point hopefully a healthier alternative
to Fentanyl will be discovered. Although whether or not this drug has stronger limits
placed upon its legal disbursement, those with the need, funds and inclination will probably
find a way to obtain it regardless of the legality or lack thereof.

Was watching Leaf game & turned it off after 3-1 Sens. Game over I thought & then watched a music documentary from 60's-80's instead, I love music & sports but had to choose.
Top 10 Harmonies (singers/bands) IMO;
Beatles (Lennon & McCartney)
Bee Gees
Beach Boys
Simon & Garfunkel
Mammas & Pappas
Bono & Edge (U2)
Okacik & Benjamin Orr (Cars)
Liam & Noel Gallagher.
Then turned the game back on & Leafs winning 4-3. Must was a $h!t show after 1st period with Babs & the team.

January 20, 2018 @ 10:26 PM

Should have said after 2nd period Babs not happy.

January 21, 2018 @ 12:07 AM

My Cavs lost again. That game really sucked. They lost. I don't know why they can't win anymore. My Habs also lost. What is wrong with Carey Price? Why is he allowing so many goals. My Coyotes won though. That was great. They won for a change. I wish they would win more. Now today my Nets play and I hope they win. Lots of people seem to have stuff in their systems. Bob Seger does not though. No, Bob Seger never took drugs. He will live a long time yet. He's 71 now so he has about 20 more years in him. I'm sure.

January 21, 2018 @ 8:24 AM

@Dale You mentioned many of the top acts. Nice list !

One I would add is the Move. The latter version of the group morphed into ELO. The first ELO album was great because it had both Roy Wood and Jeff Lynne from the Move ( and Bev Bevan). The Move were a storied British band even prior to Jeff Lynne joining with Roy Wood as the leader.

I nominate this song for great harmony and setting the template for the early and excellent ELO.

Think what it boils down to is Toronto's version of sports radio is nothing short of pom-pom radio.
The talking heads at both stations too busy listening to themselves talk.
590 & 1050 have become sports radio not worth the time to listen to, never mind tune in.

January 21, 2018 @ 2:04 PM

stephen in niagara

re the Leafs.
This week was what Babcock has been waiting for, veterans to step up and take over in the room.
Anderson & Marleau did just that this week - loved that Anderson went after specific players, and it needed to be said. Only a matter of time till we hear what Marleau had to say in between periods last night. I flipped the game off after the 2nd period, it was hockey not worth watching.

Leafs are too inconsistent. They are still a couple of seasons away from being a true contending team.
Still too many passengers carrying way to much baggage.

1st priority is Lamoriello's status, is he the GM going forward, or not?
If not, he shouldn't be involved in any player determinations leading up to the trade deadline.

Message for Alan Cross

Was listening to the Ongoing History tonight on Dave FM. You were talking about rock music and rock stars and near the end of the show you said something that shows me you're truly out of touch

You said that because streaming is the biggest source of revenue and almost all the top 200 songs are pop & hiphop, all the marketing money, etc goes to those genres. Did it really escape you that the reason that music is the most streamed is because that's what people want to hear? Once again we have a radio guy blaming the platform for the failure of rock music.

Here's a tip. Sign up for Sirius and listen to the 80's on 8. Listen to the countdowns and around 1987 you'll start to hear a huge shift toward pop & hiphop as the primary sound. Rock came back with Nirvana but after that record it was a long downward spiral that started long before Spotify existed. There is a reason Apple Music has "Beats 1" not "Rock 1".

Pop music (including hip hop) continuously refreshes and recreates itself. Rock does not. Rock music is irrelevant. You of all people should grasp that concept or maybe you were just saying it because you know your audience, rock fans, still can't get over the shift in music from 30 years ago.

January 21, 2018 @ 8:09 PM

Gary M

Dale, that's a great list. Gutsy to exclude The Eagles.

Cheryl, I hope you're right, but one thing Seger did do was smoke like crazy.

January 22, 2018 @ 12:32 AM

Well,my LV Golden Showers stood up straight and poured in 5 last night to go along with great goal tending to win yet another game. When will this ride stop?
I don't think anything else happened in sports yesterday.

January 22, 2018 @ 2:53 AM

My Nets won last night by a measly point. They had a big lead in the beginning though. Tonight hopefully my Suns and Coyotes will win. Bob Seger has cut down on his smoking and he won't smoke in front of his wife and kids. Bob Seger will live for 20 more years. Believe it. You heard it from me. He's not going to die soon and neither will John Mellencamp. They won't die any time soon and I know this.

January 22, 2018 @ 7:52 AM

@Gary M
You are correct. The Eagles slipped my mind as 1 of fave bands.

January 22, 2018 @ 10:07 AM

Urooj Islam

Speaking of the Eagles, has Cheryl made her OFFICIAL Super Bowl 52 pick yet?

January 22, 2018 @ 1:02 PM

@Urooj Islam
Yes Cheryl did pick her team to win the Super Bowl, Cleveland Browns. She picked them last September.

January 22, 2018 @ 2:03 PM

1. Mr. Cross is never going to see this. But you can comment on his site or email him directly -- he always responds.

Buuuuuuut, 2, I think you're really overthinking it, or pulling a chicken-or-the-egg. He might very well have meant that, "streaming data shows..." which gets to your point too. I'm reasonably certain based on listening to Ongoing History for 25 years that he knows all about what's actually popular, and he's often covered the influence of hip-hop on alternative/rock, and vice versa.

He's lamenting that (new) rock stars aren't really a thing anymore and giving props to the old guard that are still around.

January 22, 2018 @ 11:08 PM

My Suns lost last night, but my Coyotes won. Hopefully my Habs and Cavs will win tonight. I don't care about the Superbowl. My Browns didn't win any game. My Cardinals didn't make it. My Ravens didn't make it. Next year it will be different. I don't care about this Superbowl.

January 23, 2018 @ 6:51 AM

Lots of media people read this site. He's been a guest.

The fact he has a radio show really is moot as to whether he understands what's working & what's not working. The entire business has been decimated because of it's inability to adapt. It's like being a taxi driver in an Uber world.

What Cross seems to miss is that streaming is a choice for people. They choose the style of music, the format, the sound..etc..they want to hear. Rock music is not dead because of technology. It's dead because it stopped innovating and too much of it's audience are stuck in the past. Spotify doesn't play hits; it creates them. And almost all the streaming is pop & hip hop because that's what people seek out.

Just started a You Tube channel. I made a lot of recordings via a VCR timer during the 1980's and 1990's. Since these were unattended timer recordings, a lot of ads were saved. The recordings were made during old sitcoms and some Much Music as well as other programs.

A rough and early version can be previewed with more to come. A DIY effort so excuse the inexperience:

January 23, 2018 @ 3:03 PM

Cheryl, great to hear that about Mellencamp! Long live the heartland rockers.

January 24, 2018 @ 1:34 AM

Another Mellencamp fan. Anyway, you heard it from me first. John Mellencamp and Bob Seger won't die any time soon. I know this. How about those Habs. Yes, they won. The Price is right. They played a great game for sure. My Cavs and Nets both lost again though. It sucks. My Nets should have won as they only lost by a point. My Cavs had to lose by 10 again. When will my Cavs win again. Well, my Suns play tonight. They better win.

January 24, 2018 @ 7:22 AM

My Suns lost. That was not a good game. Well, my Habs will win tonight and my Coyotes will win tonight just before the all star break. The Price is right. My Cavs better win tomorrow. I don't know why they have to be in a big slump.

I didn't post when Patrick Brown was made leader, either.

I just checked. Zero entries on this blog include the phrase "Patrick Brown".

January 25, 2018 @ 10:12 AM

@ Mike - Fair enough, but it's a pretty important story.

If he's guilty then punish him to the full extent of the law....if this is a scandal manufactured by Wynne because PC were leading big time in the polls...well that wouldn't surprise me in the least. The Libs have shown they'll do anything to win

January 25, 2018 @ 10:41 AM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

That's what these Open Mikes are for!

It never occured to me for one second that this might be "manufactured by Wynne".

January 25, 2018 @ 10:43 AM

@ Mike - I'm ABSOLUTELY NOT saying that it is. It could all be true and a result of Brown behaving like so many men with power have behaved. I'm just saying that in light of all questionable things the Libs have done to get elected (ie. Gas Plant shut downs, mortgaging our kids future on this Hydro rebate, the suspicious timing of both the Min wage increase and free prescriptions for children) it wouldn't surprise me to find out this was a planted story.

Again...not saying hes innocent, not saying that anyone but Patrick Brown is responsible for the position he finds himself in. I'm just saying we shouldn't rush to judgment before he's had his day in court.

However...if it never crossed your mind that this might have been the mechanization of the Libs....

I'm just saying the timing on this is very convenient.

Am finding quite a bit of video from Canad's music channel. In the 1980's they were a source for much alternative content. Have found some City Limits stuff that I am posting. Plus JD Roberts, Christopher Ward and more. I will continue to add:

Here is an interview with Katrina and The Waves by JD Roberts:

Here is Daniel Richler interviewing Suzanne Vega and The Washington Squares at the Northwinds Folk Festival in 1985:

Firstly, Patrick Brown was no great shucks as a leader. I found him incredibly meh. There's enough time for the PCs to elect a new leader and still win this election.

Secondly, these two women told their story. And now I hear this was an open secret at Queen's Park.

I highly doubt the Liberal Party had anything to do with this.

January 25, 2018 @ 11:10 AM

@ Mike - you are correct, he was "meh" at best. I had not heard anything about an open secret, but you are much better connected than I am so if you say so, I will certainly not argue it.

I guess it boils down to me just being so sick of the Liberals doing what they want with my tax dollars and to hell with the consequences.

As I've said many times...we need a new breed of politician in this country, and that is not specific to the Liberal Party.

January 25, 2018 @ 11:46 AM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

I only started hearing the "open secret" remarks after the two women spoke on CTV last night at 10pm.

Trust me, I only pay minimal attention to provincial politics. I doubt I've written a thing about it since Wynne won her majority.

January 25, 2018 @ 11:48 AM

A Parliament Hill reporter tweeted last night that multiple news organizations have been working on stories about Patrick Brown for months. Like others have said, its been an open secret around Queens Park for a while. I've read its been an open secret around downtown Barrie as well.

January 25, 2018 @ 11:50 AM

all 3 parties

All 3 parties (the Liberals, Conservatives & NDP) pledged to close that gas plant during the campaign.

January 25, 2018 @ 1:03 PM

One more thought occurred to me. Brown has said for years that he wants to get married and have kids, he's pushing 40. Some men (or women) may never get married or if they do it could be much later in life. Brown seems to love his nieces and nephews. It must be hard to be a prominent politician while trying to find a future spouse, I don't see somebody like Brown being on Tinder or Plenty of Fish. With that being said, somebody in his position would likely date somebody in his inner circle or a mutual friend. In other words, there would only be a few degrees of separation between him and somebody he'd potentially date.

If its true, these rumours had been circulating at Queens Park and amongst the media for quite a while and it was open secret he didn't know how to properly conduct himself around women, then that probably explains why he's still single. Based on certain comments by reporters, everybody was waiting for these stories to surface and they seemed surprised it took this long. I would never introduce a friend to somebody I'd heard behaved inappropriately towards others whose behaviour was borderline criminal.

January 25, 2018 @ 1:15 PM

@ All 3 Parties - I don't recall the other parties saying they would do that. What i recall is the party in power cancelling them right before an election because their base in Mississauga and Oakville didn't want power plants in their backyards.

If my recollection is wrong, I will retract that statement, but what I remember is Liberals closing gas plants (then deleting emails to cover up their motives), spending money we don't have on reducing hydro bills (after selling part of hydro one despite all their own experts telling them not to) and basically doing whatever the wanted to do in order to buy votes.

I am not a conservative, I am not a Liberal, I am a Canadian who is sick of these politicians taking care of their own circles and leaving the rest of us to twist in the wind.

January 25, 2018 @ 1:26 PM

My understanding of the situation is that yes, all three parties pledged to close the gasplants.

The reason it's a Liberal scandal is:

  1. they selected the locations
  2. they lied about the cancellation costs (claimed it was $230 million, already insane, but was in reality $950 million)
  3. they tried to cover it up

And somehow the other two parties can't touch them. The PCs are going to die on social conservatism and the NDP are going to just keep making bullshit claims no is going to believe. I can't fucking believe our government can spend nearly a billion dollars and get literally nothing for it.

January 25, 2018 @ 2:41 PM

all 3 parties

after a quick google, i couldn't find a Horwath reference but here's one for Hudak:

Philly Bob, if there was a conspiracy, I think there's a better chance this was an inside job within the Tories. My contacts suggest there was a lot of chaos behind the scenes of the Ontario PCs and there are plenty there who are not mourning this development.

I don't think it hurts their election prospects one bit. Wynne's negatives are profound at this point and the odds that she will defeat herself don't change here.

January 25, 2018 @ 8:20 PM

@Gary M,

I think the electorate has oddly yawned at the Liberals' sins. Like ... the Liberals got voted in handily after all their scandals, and they haven't publicly blown it as poorly in the last election. They can walk it in.

The only chance at unseating them is a credible not-socially-conservative opposition which just doesn't exist at this point in time. I can't see the PCs ever cleaning house in that context in my lifetime. Maybe the NDP can pull something but I fully expect another Bob Rae situation in that event.

January 25, 2018 @ 10:03 PM

@Philly Bob

If it was Wynne who somehow set up this Patrick Brown fiasco, then why do it now? Why not wait until the campaign has started? Instead this gives the PC's about 5 months to restart their campaign which might actually benefit them. You don't have to pay attention to politics to know that Patrick Brown was a stupid choice for leader of the party.

PS, "Gary M" is right on the money. Lots of chatter out there about the PC party & lots of other interesting chatter I won't mention here (for fear of getting a visit from feds). If anything, this might help the PC party in the coming election. Provided they find a centrist female leader.

January 26, 2018 @ 12:11 AM

Gary M

markosaar, I'm happy to take the other side of that bet. Governments just hit a certain age where it's all over. The details don't matter. Can see it in the way the Tories won by-elections in 416. Ontario Liberals are done for at least 8 years, imo.

January 26, 2018 @ 2:44 AM
