I'm first. Goody.Cavs and Suns both won. Well, hopefully my Nets, Habs, and Coyotes win tonight. My Ravens play tomorrow. My Browns and Cardinals play on this year or not? Well, after today, three more days until Boxing Day. Bah humbug Christmas.

It's funny how much today feels like Xmas Eve.

I think I'm used to my last day at work being Dec 24... so as I wind down for 10 days or so, it feels like Santa's coming tonight.

December 22, 2017 @ 9:36 AM

Saw the tweets responding to the gentleman who tweeted about his belief that adults don't use
the library. Good to know that indeed they do! (Not that I wasn't aware of this from the more than
10,000 Malcolm Gladwell-approved hours I've spent in them over the last fifteen years or so!!).
Perhaps the library gets a deal when they buy in bulk, but they are a big supporter of Canadian
authors and musicians. Not to mention, that certain branches host live events such as author readings, book clubs, and live music performances. Plus, the Parkdale library even has an instrument-lending bank of around 300 instruments. And you wouldn't know it from looking around you in public spaces and on public transit, but libraries are also a great provider of free Internet for those without it, such as myself.

Also, I saw Mike's tweet about that alternative Christmas music documentary "Jingle Bell Rocks!"
and I concur that it is a great watch.

I have so little book reading time these days, but when there's something I want to check out, like the T+T book Canadianity, I put it on hold and pick it up at my local library.

And when I visit, I always take the kids and let them pick out a book or two each.

I used to borrow lots of music and video from the library, but now I just go digital.

December 22, 2017 @ 9:51 AM

I fear that the days of hard copies of anything besides books at the library are slowly coming to an end. Apparently the Parkdale library branch is the second busiest in the city, and from regularly taking
a brief look around me, people in this neighbourhood really take advantage of all the great stuff (i.e.,
physical objects(!) on offer. Wish I had the slightest clue about making the change to digital in this
regard, but i fear that I will ultimately wind-up up on the Canadian version of Hoarders surrounded
by all my books, comics, magazines and various music formats!!!

December 22, 2017 @ 9:57 AM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

Digital isn't for everybody. I started digitizing my CD collection back in 2003. For music, I find it most convenient.

For movie, I'm now completely digital. I can't remember the last time I watched a movie on a physical medium like a DVD.

But for books, which I sadly don't read as often as I should, I still like a physical copy. And I love to save my money and borrow from the library.

December 22, 2017 @ 10:02 AM

No joke, not opposed to digitizing at all, but I have never been very good with technology beyond a
basic level. I have a music collection of over 10,000 pieces, and the expense I've spent storing the
majority of it over the past nine years is beyond mind-boggling when you consider how limited my
funds are. Every time my storage costs go up (which is probably happening again in two months or so), I wish that I was a minimalist type of person like my younger brother. Probably is a good thing
that the age/era of the physical record store is basically dead, as I pretty much have run out of room
and/or money!!

The Voice of Reason

Was reading about the Trudeau conflict of interest situation with his "vacationing" practices and the cost to the Canadian taxpayer. Not necessarily a Trump fan, but he does his job for $1 per year and genuinely seems to care about managing the American Tax dollars.
My favorite thing about Trump is his ability to drive leftists insane. His Troll Power is off the charts! !
His continuing success will continue to expose traitors. He makes his enemies self destruct by producing results. In the end, you can't argue with real results. Trump has exposed a lot of people in 2017. But something tells me 2018 will be even better.

December 22, 2017 @ 10:13 AM

“Trump does his job for a dollar a year” is not necessarily a proven fact, and even if it was, he’s (unconstitutionally) used the presidency to enrich himself and his family greatly.

December 22, 2017 @ 10:31 AM

The Anti Bubble Man

Yes producing results like the biggest give way to the rich ever. He was supposed to be for the common man.

Ever heard of of the emoluments clause and Trump's abuse of it to enrich himself ?

Give it a rest VOR. You can live in your Fox Noise bubble and ignore reality but most of the rest are not that dumb.

December 22, 2017 @ 10:35 AM

People don't realize this but in addition to regular DVD's, you can also borrow your favourite TV series on DVD. How many times have you bought a TV series and spent anywhere from $20-$50 on it and then have it sit around? I actually do all my printing at the library which isn't much. My library offers 2 free pages of print per day and a lot of the time.

December 22, 2017 @ 10:36 AM

And, with your library card you can access the Criterion Collection of films online as well as most magazines.

@ Toronto Mike - is it at all possible that Voice is actually our old friend Dave??

His flat out lies in support of Trump seem strangely familiar to things Dave used to say about Rob Ford?

Anything is possible in the world of anonymous commenting, but I highly doubt it.

TVOR seems a lot less annoying and repetitive. They just share the same nonsensical ideologies.

December 22, 2017 @ 10:58 AM

I just can't wrap my head around people supporting that Monster. Trump is the personification of everything that is wrong in a capitalist society. It is the responsibility of the strong and those who have means to help those in our society who do not. Trump on the other hand is all about taking care of himself and those he deems "loyal"

He would watch the entire world crash and burn so long as he's the one captaining the ship....

December 22, 2017 @ 11:03 AM

The way I look at it, some people believe the earth is flat and others believe the moon landing was faked. Some people believe some whacked out crazy shit!

December 22, 2017 @ 11:09 AM

More revolting drivel from TVOR. Respecting the tax payer dollars? How many trips to mar a lago has he made? He's done more golfing on the tax payers dime in the first ten months of his presidency than Obama did in 4 years. How is that respect for the tax payer? Trump is en route to cost tax payer 2 to 3 times what Obama did for travel.

Even his cronies think they are entitled to use the tax payers dime for every whim. Mnuchin wanting to use a government jet for his honeymoon. Mike Pence travelling to the football game just so he could make a statement to leave when people kneeled.

Says a lot about a person when they find pleasure in someone trolling others and purposely trying to upset the masses. Not that people here didn't get your modus operandi from the beginning.

As for exposing traitors, Trump has been good at that. Fortunately it's been people in his inner cabal at the whitehouse so far. I also agree 2018 will be better, here's to Mueller frying trump and everyone caught in that web.

December 22, 2017 @ 11:52 AM

The Voice of Reason

It is not as much supporting Trump, but staying away from the Democrat spending spree.

" By January 2009, the United States had accumulated $10.6 trillion in debt. That's the net amount the country had borrowed from Washington through the Bush years. The gross national debt now stands at $19.7 trillion. That's an increase of $9.1 trillion — not quite a doubling, but pretty close.Oct 19, 2016"

Hillary Clinton's foundation raped its donations for personal gain.

" CARLY for America super PAC noted that the Clinton Foundation’s latest IRS Form 990 shows total revenue of nearly $149 million in 2013, and total charitable grant disbursements of nearly $9 million (see page 10). That comes to roughly 6 percent of the budget going to grants. And besides those grants, the super PAC said, “there really isn’t anything that can be categorized as charitable.”

Here in Canada, we are suffering from Trudeau's lack of spending control.

@ Voice - Didn't Trump spend millions of his "charity's" dollars?? Didn't he screw thousands of students on his Trump university?? Isn't he notorious for being sued by contractors for not paying them for the work they did at his hotels and resorts??

I am the farthest thing from a Trudeau fan...but I'll take him over Trump any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

Donald Trump is one of the worst excuses for a human being that has ever existed. History will judge him as the single worst POTUS ever. He will be the standard by which all bad politicians are judged. (that is of course assuming he doesn't start an all out nuclear war thus leaving no one to write history books)

December 22, 2017 @ 4:33 PM

The Voice of Reason

Regardless of who is in power, my biggest fear is that our debt and the payments to maintain it actually overtake our ability to tax us as citizens. I visit and participate in many endeavours to assist our hidden "or forgotten" sector of society that are senior citizens that struggle from day to day to exist.
Try to visit a home where you can see the person living in it was once a proud, productive Canadian, only to be forgotten, because quite honestly Canadians cannot afford to carry the burden of this part of society.
Healthcare costs presently consume over 46% of every tax dollar, 8.1% of every tax dollar goes to interest on the collective debts. That leaves less than 45% of tax dollars to invest in infrastructure, technology and other day to day services that we enjoy.

December 22, 2017 @ 4:49 PM

I sure don't want 20 cm of snow, but I didn't go out yesterday and I'm not going out today either. Lucky night. My Nets won last night. That's great. They just clobbered the Wizards. My Habs also won. The Price is right. Now that Carey Price is around, he is back on track, so my Habs are winning the cup. My Coyotes also won. Well, today my Ravens play and will win. My Habs, Coyotes, Nets and Suns will also win.

December 23, 2017 @ 8:55 AM

Here's an unsolicited, true Christmas story from the "Ho Ho Ho Department": Yesterday afternoon
around 4 PM I was walking past the infamous Brass Rail strip club south of Yonge and Bloor, and
wouldn't you know it, but they had the Xmas music on full blast and Band-Aid's "Do They Know It's
Christmas?" came booming out onto the street! I don't know about anyone else (and I haven't been
to a strip club in over 20 years), but I would certainly feel more than a little bit uncomfortable/guilty
receiving a lap dance during that track!!! Can't imagine what it's like in there when they drop some
Burl Ives or that Bowie 'n' Bing duet!

My holiday ended on Tuesday night and I'm about to go into the fetal position, what with my beloved libraries (lifeline!!) about to close after today for the next 72+ hours. Thank God for Chinese food and movies, otherwise I'm really not sure what I'd have to look forward to! Merry

Bicycles have every right to be on the road all year round. For many, it's their only mode of transportation. Give them room. If you don't have room to give them at least 1 metre of distance, wait until you do before you go around them.

And her response about distracted driving

dash cam. stopped light. Tweeted while i was out of car walking to destination. that's why.

Multiple fails. First it's not a dash cam and using a phone to take a photo while stopped at a light is still distracted driving. You are in control of the car at a light therefore it's distracted driving. On top of that "TwoWheels22" retweets multiple photos of her where she's distracted driving.

So I have to ask this...had this been a good old union boy working for the TTC, the right would be all over this asking for his head

Just to lighten it up; what would one rate as the best movie all all time?

I feel it would be a tossup between Goodfellas and Dog Day Afternoon.

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

Almost 12 years ago I listed my 10 favourite movies of all-time.

No Field of Dreams... although I do dig that flick. Here's what I listed then.

Pulp Fiction
Reservoir Dogs
The Shawshank Redemption
Fight Club
Kill Bill - Volumes 1&2
The Usual Suspects
Office Space
The Godfather: Part II
Big Fish

My list today would be similar, but different. The Godfather would be right up there and The Usual Suspects and Office Space would fall out of the top ten. I'd have to noodle this one...

I love that you included Big Fish in your top 10 films of all-time several years back! That film was
released at the end of 2003 about a month or so before the first anniversary of my father's passing.
It really resonated with me at the time, and it is one of only a handful of films to bring me to tears in
