I'm first. Goody. Well, my Habs won. Yes, the Price is right. He's back to his winning ways. My Coyotes lost though. My Cavs won again. That's great. My Nets lost though. On Sunday my Browns play my Ravens. Are the Browns ever going to win this year? Who knows. Well, December 26 can't get here fast enough. Then no more Christmas for another year. Bah humbug Christmas.

So Todd Shapiro has been guest hosting on 1050's morning show this week. I don't think he's doing a bad job, but his history as a Morning Zoo guy shows through in many segments.

I for one liked Dean Blundell & Company, but it would seem the 40+ crowd did not and now we have Eric Brady back in the mornings on 590. I would imagine that if 1050 ends up giving Shapiro his own slot, he will suffer the same fate.....

Trudeau made headlines around the world for tearing up in front of cameras when he reunited with a Syrian refugee father. He wept after the death of his friend, Gord Downie.

The prime minister also cried as he apologized to Newfoundland residential school survivors on Nov. 24. Four days later, Trudeau wiped away tears in the House of Commons after delivering a formal apology to LGBTQ2 civil servants who were discriminated against on the basis of their sexual orientation.

If the tears are real or not, but hey how can you judge a drama teacher drama?. Having emotional out breaks as often as Trudeau has exposed should red flag this mans mental stability and his leadership of this great country.

December 15, 2017 @ 9:42 AM

He didn't fake beating the shit of a Conservative senator.

He was just at a ribbon cutting for the subway extension into Vaughan.
Ain't it great that billions were spent to extend the already overcrowded subway line to add more people onto it every day, instead of where it was needed? Since the downtown relief line is still many years away, shouldn't there be some kind of surface substitute in the interim , with rush hour express buses and diamond lanes? Maybe from Pape station to Dundas might make more sense than King St.

Couldn't agree with you more about the way-past-long-overdue need for a downtown
relief subway line. Not really sure what the benefit of this line is to the large majority of
transit riders who will probably never take advantage of these 6 new subway stops. The
bus ride to Vaughan Mills mall will still cost an additional fare and a 30 minute trip each way.

@ Voice - J.T. is just PET-lite. He has no policy thoughts of his own, no idea what he's doing. He does and says what his handlers tell him to. He was elected on nostalgia and our Canadians desire to have a Dynasty like the Kennedy's. He cries on cue because it makes him look sweet and sensitive. So many of the women in my life voted for him because he's a cutie pie and PET's son.

Much like the Ontario Liberals, he will run this county into the ground, people will elect the PC's into power to tighten the belt and when things start to look better again our social guilt will require us to elect another liberal mess.

I was really hoping the NDP would provide a realistic alternative to this never ending cycle...but my hopes seem dashed lately.

@HOE - I used to to work downtown, and I agree there is a huge need for relief in the core. However, there is a bigger need for relief on the various 400 series highways and the Gardiner/QEW. There are way too many people trying to get in and out of the city, the arteries are clogged at virtually all hours of the day

December 15, 2017 @ 11:22 AM

Ben V

@The Troll of Reason: Yes of course someone crying at sad events means they are mentally unstable.... Perhaps the unstable person is the one that takes issue with someone else crying.

December 15, 2017 @ 11:26 AM

I remember reading about what Toronto city leaders, elected and not, were fretting and fighting over when the Yonge Street subway was first proposed. There was plenty of handwringing over being able to fund the project, no matter how beneficial it would be for the city. There were some brave voices that stood up and were heard saying something like "We have to do this, and now, or those that follow us will regret our poor vision for our growing city." I think the smartest person I read about was the one engineering planner that pointed out that, in an already developed area, the only way to truly increase total commuting/vehicular/passenger capacity, you had to either go up, or go down underground. While I don't live inside Toronto anymore, when I am there, I can't help but be thankful for all of those that made the difficult decisions to build what is now an inadequate subway system. Imagine the congestion if all that Toronto had was surface transit, including the various forms of rail. Utterly brutal.

December 15, 2017 @ 11:31 AM

@ Ben - Voice wasn't around here when I used to visit, you wouldn't use the term Troll lightly I think. (i seem to recall a certain guy named Dave getting under all our skins during the Rob Ford years)

I have no issue with a genuine display of emotion, I just don't think anything Trudeau does is own opinion on the guy.

December 15, 2017 @ 11:32 AM

Ben V

@ Philly Bob: No he wasn't around then. Yes there was Dave the troll who went after you. There was argie, who would engage and then claim the victim when you pointed out how wrong he was.

TVOR popped up a year and half ago when Dave and Argie were gone. He says asinine things to get a reaction and then runs.

I remember well your disdain for Trudeau. I won't argue with you on his merits, as I think we both came to the conclusion we don't see eye to eye on him.

However based on the economy over the last year both in Ontario and Canada as a whole I don't see the liberals running the economy into the ground. Granted I'm no Wynne fan and I've become disenfranchised with Ontario Liberals. Things were not so sunny under the federal conservatives. How many years did it take them to pay off the deficit they ran after receiving an economy with a surplus?

Dave Williams was the chap I banned. He was so repetitive I started to hate my own site so I kicked him out.

Argie comments forever... but I haven't seen him here in awhile. I hope he's well!

December 15, 2017 @ 12:55 PM

@ Ben - I had forgotten all about Argie....he was a pain. While I would concede that there are good things JT has done (not the least of which is being the Anti-Trump on the world stage which makes us Canadians look great!) The Ontario Libs are a cluster fuck of corruption, nepotism and general self service.

No the PC aren't much better...we need a new breed of politician in general, but the Ontario Libs are past political corruption and now firmly planted in the are of true criminals....

December 15, 2017 @ 12:57 PM

I feel so insensitive saying this but my girlfriend and I were talking about this the other day (but hey this this Open Mike for a reason), has anybody else noticed Steve Ryan's (CP24 crime specialist) teeth? They're so, so white. I'm not trying to make fun of him, but every time he talks my eyes just get drawn to his mouth.

December 15, 2017 @ 1:35 PM

Those new transitways in Mississauga, roads used only by GO and Miway, work well. You get from Islington subway station to Square One in about 31 minutes (Rt 109). It looks like (and is) a physically longer zig-zag route when you see it on a map, but it feels (and is) faster than the local bus that crawls along Burnhamthorpe (Rt 26), because most of the trip is zipping along the 427 and transitway.

December 15, 2017 @ 1:41 PM

Mike, thoughts on the latest King St. pilot survey/stats? Sounds like it might not be as great as you proclaimed after the first day.

Rick C in Oakville

PM JT has I think jumped the shark on shedding tears with the apologies. Yes it is great to show empathy, compassion, but now it doesn't seem sincere.
Still don't understand why the King Street experiment wasn't rush hour and Monday to Friday only?

December 15, 2017 @ 5:12 PM

Does anyone have an opinion on Christmas fill-ins on AM talk radio? Or am I talking to the wrong audience?
John Pole (not sure on the spelling) is awesome as is Darren Jones. I'd love to hear them on 1010 afternoons.... 12-4.

We, the citizens of Canada should be the ones that are weeping. Trudeau has reduced Canada and its military to a state of laughable proportions. Trudeau on his knees has asked Australia to sell us it's used fighter jets. Next Trudeau may have to ask Australia to have it's navy patrol our coastlines due to screwed up procurement's for new ships. Purchasing new seems to bewilder the Liberals(submarines).

That basketball game sucked last night. It really did. My Nets lost. It was a ho hum game. I can't stand Demar Derozan or Kyle Lowry. I just don't like those guys. Well, I hope my Cavs and Suns as well as my Habs and Coyotes win tonight. I need it. I do not want another basketball game like last night.

December 16, 2017 @ 8:20 AM

The Voice of Reason

Not a big NBA fan here, but Lowry and Derozan seem to represent themselves, the team and the league quite well. Other than them being Raptors, would you not want them on your team if you had the chance?

I fully get why some people would not like a team. As a Habs fan, it would have been great to have Wendel Clark on our team in the in the early 1990's.

I'm guilty of this as well.

For example, Daniel Alfredsson. I did not like him! I'm all but certain it's because he was a Sen.

Derek Jeter i an even better example. I never liked him, even as the baseball world celebrated his farewell tour. He was a damn Yankee!

December 16, 2017 @ 10:14 AM

I get the Jeter reference fully. Not a big soccer fan here, but enjoy the Ronaldo vs Messi rivalry.

My Habs lost and its all Bryan Adams's fault. Bah humbug!
lol Just kidding.

In all seriousness though, why Bryan Adams? I mean, I get Serena Ryder. Not my thing but hey I thought she was great and she did a good job singing O Canada. But Bryan Adams? Seriously? Yeah that sucked.

December 17, 2017 @ 7:52 AM

Yes, my Habs lost. Probably Brian Adams' fault. That's not good. They got shut out. My Coyotes lost as well. Hockey sucked last night. Basketball didn't suck though. My Cavs won. That's great. My Suns had a comeback win by a couple points. Now ready for some football. My Ravens play my Browns. I like both, but I think I want to see my Browns finally win a game. They can't seem to win even if they get a lead. They can't close it out. Also hopefully my Cardinals will win as well. Tonight my Cavs play and my Nets play. I do not like Demar Derozan or Kyle Lowry. I guess if they were on one of my teams, I may change my mind. Bah humbug for Christmas.

December 17, 2017 @ 8:05 AM

Cheryl is out of control, hating Christmas is one thing but hating Lowry and DeRozan?

Somebody stop her!

I'm stating what I think and if you don't like it, move on. My Browns lost, but they lost to my Ravens. My Browns will never win a game ever. My Cardinals also lost. My Cavs won yesterday, but my Nets lost. I can count on my Cavs to win. One week from tomorrow Christmas will be over. Goody.

December 18, 2017 @ 8:05 AM

Feisty Cheryl.

I like it.

December 18, 2017 @ 8:43 AM

@Beatts - Yup, Cheryl will come at ya if you call her out, she's a tough one!

December 18, 2017 @ 5:31 PM

@Toronto Mike,

Are you accepting questions for the forthcoming @12:36 episode?

I'm curious to know if he pays much attention to, and if so, if he thinks the comment section is a cesspool, or has improved in any measurable way over the last few years.

December 18, 2017 @ 5:50 PM

If the Toronto Mike'd comment section was a David Lynch show then the big twist would be that Cheryl is Mike's mother which would explain why he is so protective of her.

December 18, 2017 @ 8:54 PM

I am not anyone's mother. I don't know how you got the mother thing anyway. Well, my Suns had a comeback win last night. That was great. Anyway, less than a week and Christmas will be over. A week from today and no more Christmas for another year.

December 19, 2017 @ 6:58 AM

Cheryl is simply a staple here. I'd imagine she has the most comments on this blog other than Mike himself (Mike could tell us I'm sure) and personally, I find her funny. She is blunt, to the point and rarely pulls her punches. I'd imagine Mike is protective of her because he is a kind soul and knows a bit of her backstory.

Either laugh along with Cheryl, or ignore her, but no one should go after her.

December 19, 2017 @ 8:51 AM

I agree. I think she's great (other than being a Habs fan ;) She's like the TM chat mascot. Always here, always entertaining.

December 19, 2017 @ 10:41 AM

As long as I can remember U.S syndicated overnight show Coast to Coast (Art Bell back in the day, now George Noory) . This week it seems like all of Corus/GlobalRadio has dropped C2C from all it affiliates.

The writing might be on the wall when they started having a disclaimer every half hour and removed the repeat showing before the live show.

The show has gone to crap anyway, it went away from non-national topics that Art did to now more of a Trump loving, right wing talking points show like every other American national radio show with some horrible alternative health infomercials.

It is interesting Toronto was a big market for them. Noory would do live shows here yearly until last year. CFRB is airing a 2 hour similar style show called Beyond Reality Radio, which I personally think it's better than Coast as it avoids the political topic that Noory goes to all the time

December 19, 2017 @ 1:03 PM

Urooj Islam

@ Tron

The Saturday night episodes are the last bastion left where a guest host is able to talk about somewhat unconventional topics that aren't your typical right wing, new age health science Noory influenced topics.

I've heard some great shit on Saturday nights over the years and basically have tuned out during the week shows since Noory took over full time.

December 19, 2017 @ 3:17 PM

Congrats to the TTC on the subway extension! As a Downsview boy born and raised, it's about time they got that thing running all the way to York University. It took 30 years of arguing, planning, building and a bit of shady dealings (lookin' at you, Sorbara family), but it's finally done. Now it's on the the LRTs on Eglinton, Finch and Sheppard and rapid transit will finally be available to the poorest parts of Toronto!
And to all those whining about the downtown relief line-you already have 11 streetcar lines as well and by the way, none of them go farther north than St Clair or farther east than Vic Park, so wait your turn.

December 19, 2017 @ 10:11 PM

Now that Kirk Douglas has hit 101, how does that affect your "Dead Pool" scoring??!
You really should reward that longevity with it now counting *for* your score, so say if Kirk makes it to 105, you ("Micheal", haha) get 5...

December 20, 2017 @ 12:03 AM

My Cavs lost. That sucked. It really did. My Habs won though. That's great. The Price is right. My Coyotes lost again. That sucks. Counting the days until the 26th. I can't wait until fricken Christmas is over. I don't bother putting up a tree. Real trees the needles fall off and spill all over the place. A fake tree you have to put together. Then there are the stupid lights. What's the use of those stupid lights anyway. They waste energy. I don't put up a tree and I never will do that.

"The Grinch hated Christmas! The whole Christmas season!
Now, please don't ask why. No one quite knows the reason.
It could be his head wasn't screwed on just right.
It could be, perhaps, that his shoes were too tight.
But I think that the most likely reason of all,
May have been that his heart was two sizes too small."

did you enjoy christmas when you were a child? just wondering
do you have any siblings/parents/someone else to visit during the holidays? just wondering

hope the 26th comes fast for you.

December 20, 2017 @ 12:45 PM

It's not whining. It's dumb to put more people onto an overcrowded system. It's about density. And it's not "for downtown people", it's for people trying to get downtown from the suburbs. Downtown residents can walk.

December 20, 2017 @ 4:14 PM

Something TOTALLY fishy about the Shermans both passing?
Could be an Apotex finacial situatuion or something else not Kosher.

December 20, 2017 @ 8:32 PM

I liked Christmas when I was a child. I think I did anyway, but not anymore. When I was working, there was all this office party stuff and gift exchanges, buying gifts for people you don't know well or people you don't like is hard. Anyway, I don't have brothers or sisters. I was an only child. Anyway, my Nets and Suns both lost. That sucks. My Nets rallied, but they couldn't win.

Hoping for an Anonymass Golden Showers update soon, they are tied for the best record in the Western Conference with a strong stream of good play.

In the last 45 mnutes or so, Q107 has played both Neil Young's "Long May You Run" and the Barenaked Ladies' "Brian Wilson." Both songs were featured in their live versions and this always seem to be the case whenever these tracks are played on Q. The former is definitely the number one song ever written about a hearse(!!) while the latter tune is considered by many to be their favourite BNL track. Myself, I'm partial to the original Stills-Young studio version of the first song, and either the
Yellow Tape or Gordon renditions of the latter. Would be nice if the powers that be switched things
up occasionally, but that's probably not going to happen anytime soon. Guess that's what Youtube
is for!
