Hey first Happy Friday Everyone!

November 24, 2017 @ 8:08 AM

Cheryl

Well, I'm not first. It wasn't today I was talking about. I'm talking about December 1. If you don't post open Mike before 7:30, then who knows when I'll comment next Friday. I'm a bit late today because Grocery Gateway was late. Now they're late when they come first thing in the morning. Thing is now they only give half credits for being late. Oh well, they can be late any time. Well, basketball today and hockey. Hopefully my Cavs, Nets, and Suns win today and my Coyotes win.

I'm afraid I won't be able to post next Friday's Open Mike until 8ish. Until then, I'm 100% preoccupied by the two little ones.

Good luck at your appointment!

Can we please Kick Out the Jams with Cheryl? Or do a Deep Dive with Cheryl?

November 24, 2017 @ 9:25 AM

The Voice of Reason

@Urooj Islam

If there was a KOTJ with Cheryl, my guess would be that 8 songs are by the best singer of all time, Bob Segar.

November 24, 2017 @ 9:26 AM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

@Urooj Islam

Don't even joke about that. It causes unnecessary anxiety.

So let me be crystal clear here.... Cheryl is not invited on my podcast. She does not have to visit my studio and record with me. She will not kick out the jams or do a deep dive.

November 24, 2017 @ 9:27 AM

@ Toronto Mike

You can always rank her Top 10 favourite sports teams.

@Mike
Just curious, is your unnecessary anxiety about having 8 Bob Seger songs in a KOTJ episode
or the multiple comments/messages from Cheryl refusing any requests to appear? I would
gladly put on a wig (my hair is currently pretty long!) and take her place!! How do you feel
about Air Supply, Dan Fogelberg, America, John Denver and such? Would definitely be the best
amateur episode of KOTJ ever (and for sure the funniest!!).

November 24, 2017 @ 9:32 AM

@Mike

You should get IRV to KOTJ, it would interesting to see what he has bottled up inside.

If Cheryl reads a joke about her appearing on Toronto Mike'd, she will interpret it as something she has to do and will become very stressed by it. So if Cheryl's reading this, I'll say it one more time. Cheryl does not ever have to appear on my podcast.

I never extended the invitation in the first place. I never invited her! A commenter suggested it... and I just spent a great deal of time calming her down and assuring her she didn't have to do it.

@All
So the union issues a press release about Lance Brown and Joe Tilley getting laid off. Now it's clear CTV Toronto is going to pretend Lance decided to retire. He'll get his cake and sad farewells from colleagues begging him not to go.

I just can't stomach that. It's such horseshit. It's going down exactly the way Christine Bentley said it went down with her at CTV. That audio is preserved here if anyone wants to revisit it: http://www.torontomike.com/2016/10/toronto_miked_podcast_episode_199.html

p.s. All the best to Lance and Joe!

November 24, 2017 @ 9:40 AM

bsmntdwllr73

@Mike
Well, you can certainly relax, then, because I feel completely safe betting my last dollar that no one
on here would ever make that same recommendation/suggestion on my behalf (boo hoo!). Oh well,
they don't know what they are missing (or perhaps they probably do, although there is nobody
funnier!!!)

November 24, 2017 @ 9:44 AM

You have to admit a podcast with Irv would be awesome. First a deep dive, then KOTJ. And I'm sure in tipical Irv fassion, he would pick a bunch of shit that nobody likes just to piss us off, but everybody would still listen. It would probably be your most downloaded podcast. Sadly its probably not going to happen since Irv lives on the west coast, but if it did, it would be awesome.

Have to admit I had never heard of Air Supply till about 10 or 12 years ago, South Park used one of their crappy songs in an episode where Wendy broke up with Stan.

November 24, 2017 @ 9:53 AM

I would monetize having a beer with IRV, My gut tells me that IRV would likely bail however.

When I was a kid, Air Supply songs like Even the Nights are Better, Every Woman in the World and All Out of Love were everywhere.

November 24, 2017 @ 9:58 AM

Air Supply still appear at Rama or Fallsview every other year or so. Their ultimate moment was when
they recorded "Making Love Out Of Nothing At All" by Meatloaf Svengali Jim Steinman in 1983!!
(Russell Hitchcock and Graham Russell, AKA, the Two Russells!!) Back in 1984 or so, my buddy One-Leg was the third wheel on his pal Steve's romantic Valentines' Day date at an Air Supply gig at Maple
Leaf Gardens. You can bet that any dude who took his special lady to that gig scored a lot easier than
the Leafs did during that era!!!

I am currently half-lobster ... had surgery on Monday to put pins into my finger to keep it straight for healing the bone broken in last Friday's dooring. Not looking forward to them being removed in 2-3 weeks. Feeling very lucky that I only broke a single hand and nothing more.

CTV: Sorry, Lance, but your days are numbered. Hit the road. You're a bright boy, though, you'll find something else.

CTV: Your call. Hey everyone, Lance Brown is retiring!

I'd bail? I worked with police on criminal cases & some horrible ugly internet stuff, so not much gets to me (or sadly, surprises me anyone). Do book the beer in advance though as my life is *really* busy lately.

@Jason: I have long time favourite songs, but I can't really thing of a song that is my absolute favourite. That changes with mood. As far as what's current that I like I'd say it's Havana from Camila Cabello. I'm starting to get sick of it though.

Have been in Calgary the past 10 days, and definitely signs of the economy being very slow, a lot of empty store fronts, and for sale signs. Alberta is probably one of most favorite destinations in Canada just due to the mountains and vast openness once you leave the cities.
On my way out from Toronto I noticed Air Canada is bringing in now the self drop luggage , which should create some great disruption with people not familiar with how it works. Calgary has it(2 drops), and even at low traffic mid day it was frustratingly slow. First world problems I know.

Any traction in getting John Pollock on or Jason Agnew on (again)? Since the last time I suggested them, their entire department (Live Audio Wrestling) was replaced and they were all fired yet the brand of Live Audio Wrestling was kept by their employers (Anthem Sports and Entertainment, owners of Fight Network).

@Rick C

Yep, it's going into year 4. I know guys out there who have been unemployed for up to 2 years. These are highly skilled technology guys. Most of them have gone elsewhere to work while the family stays in the West.

I haven't did much work recently in the oil patch, but I did sometimes go to the court house downtown in Calgary. It was shocking. Half empty buildings, restaurants without people, etc. I can recall in the boom when we'd wait 90 minutes for wings at Joyce on 4th. On my way back east I made a point of visiting the city. All I could feel was ghosts. Lots of places I used to frequent were gone & the rest are hanging on.

Folks out there just soldier on. And they don't ask for help. The ironic part is they're still a have province and still funding the transfer payment system. I do know the energy sector is having a tough time finding guys again. Too afraid to go back.

It’s a pride that’s been passed down to me
Deep as coal mines, wide as farmer’s fields
Yeah, I’ve got independence in my veins

Albertans do ask for help eg Redwater. Federal resources went into funding the oilsands projects initially and therefore Canadians should benefit from its wealth, no different than any other industry that we as Canadians have previously funded.
I laugh when I hear this garbage about the transfer payments being unfair to other provinces. Most Westerners tend to forget that Ontario carried the load for over 100 years and we STILL are the economic hub of this nation.

November 24, 2017 @ 6:10 PM

Some warmth (+5 to +10) on the prairies after some bitter cold. At least the snow will melt in the coming days.

That was an excellent column by Rosie DiManno. I have always liked Sundin, and having lived in Sweden for eight years, I understand the laid-back, yet serious , Swedish mentality.

I'd have a hell of a time picking ten KOTJ songs. Likely AC/DC, Al Stewart, Gordon Lightfoot, Beat Farmers, Arcade Fire, Japandroids, Beautiful South (Paul Heaton), Ladybug Transistor, Chris Rea, Rush, Barclay James Harvest, Rod Stewart, Jimmy Buffett, Malcolm Tomlinson, Poco, Wild Swans, Def Leppard, Poison, Darren Hayes (Savage Garden), Mark Knopfler, and on and on...

Go Arrrrrgggggooooossssss!!!!

And TFC.

Federal funds in the oil sands? No, Lougheed used provincial funds to kick start bitumen mining. And spin it how you want Alberta has committed far more than any other province ever has into transfer payments.

BTW, remember last week you promised Mike for the 100th time you weren't going to start shit, blah blah blah. And yet you have again. Because of this I've contacted a long time friend "Malformed Packet" to assist in ensuring you don't get out of hand.

You likely have either forgotten about or just not educated on Cities Service Canada. Ontario had 5 percent ownership, while the Canadian Government had 10 % ownership of the partnership. For one to even publicly state that Alberta "solely" developed the oilsands without any other Canadian Government assistance is either ignorant or uneducated.

KOTJ. For the past 18 months

1. Zedd - Stay. For Vancouver
2. Sarah McLachlin - Sweet Surrender. For my wife because cancer destroyed everything. I miss you
3. ATB. - Esctasy. For all things Banff.
4. AC DC. For those about to rock. Being part of the team that took down a sexual monster.
5. Steve Perry. - Oh Sherrie. My wife’s name.
6. u2 - one.
7. Real McCoy - Runaway. Z103.5 and returning to a place I moved to in 94 to give my son a better life
8. Jets Overhead - Headed for Nowhere.
9. Pure - Anna is a Speed Freak. Outreach in the DTES
10. Serena Ryder. Oh what I wouldn’t do. When a digital forensics guy submits a report on a murdered girl thanks to the info from a scared single Mom who was a friend of the victim. If the Browns win once or twice before the end of the season, it will be in games that are even more meaningless for the other team, and will in effect be more like losing for Cleveland by pushing them out of getting the first pick in the draft.

But isn't the really big "news" of the day the royal stuff? Ha ha.
I know who the queen is, because she's on our money, but anything else I can't even pretend to pay attention to. To me it's like hearing people talk about fictional characters in some movie franchise or TV show I don't watch and never will -- Star Wars, Game Of Thrones, Harry Potter, etc.
What?! Prince Whoozit is getting married, and they're going to be given the official titles of Duke and Duchess of Sherwood Forest?!

When I heard on Toronto news this AM, breaking story about Harry & Megan's engagement & then talked about it for over 5 minutes. I don't care as probably most Canadians. My late Grandmother was a staunch Monarchy fan & the Queen & family & she would be happy today.
The Argos win the Grey Cup in the last minute in a shocker over heavily favored Stamps & not lead story?
With all the newspapers being discontinued, media (radio & TV) personalities being "laid off or fired" it shows that overall social media & digital communication with many less people is the norm.
No wonder I was "restructured out" 2 months ago in printing industry after 38 years as sales & customers were declining quickly.
You do have to give Harry credit for what he did for over 1 week in Toronto with the Invictus Games last summer. A great humanitarian.

November 27, 2017 @ 1:58 PM

Invictus and his other humanitarian efforts are all very worthwhile. Any kerfuffle about his personal

Some people follow the royal family the way I follow the Leafs or others follow Dancing with the Stars or Star Wars. It's a distraction from the real world.

The only reason there is a Toronto angle is because Suits films here!! Not that there

Don't mean to be so cynical on this topic, but can't really see the fairytale aspecst of this saga. She is

How about those Cavs. Boy, they clobbgered the Sixers. That's great. My Habs won as well. The Price is right. Now the Habs won't lose again. They're going to win the cup. My Ravens also won. Yes, the Ravens will win the Superbowl. My Nets lost though. Well, I got my temporary crown removed and my permanent crown put on. Boy, a long appointment again. The good thing was that Bob Seger was on the radio when I was there and they turned it up for me because they know I like him. They played We Got Tonight. Boy, he's a beautiful singer. So many singers died lately, but Bob Seger is still alive. He won't die any time soon. He has about 20 or 30 more years to live. He'll be in his 90s or maybe 100 before he dies. Bob Seger is the king. Well, other than that, this is my last crown. If another tooth breaks, he will just pull it out. I'll keep repeating pull it out like it's a broken record and then he will have to listen to me.

To some people a royal wedding is a big deal. Let it be. Isn't that a good sign? There is someone left in this world that still believes a "fairytale" can happen. Seems like most of the world is pretty cranky.

@jj, @WCI
Not against the upcoming royal wedding on any moral or racial grounds, nor do I think that others
shouldn't be enthused about it. However, my beef is with the relentless, OTT coverage of the media
(which I know I CAN and SHOULD avoid/ignore!) and their endless, mindless hyperbole. Will try harder
to keep myself in check on this subject in the future!!

As I say, the Royal Family is the Kardashians for 50+ white people, they can't get enough.

bsmntdwllr73 - i understand what you mean :-) maybe there's a facebook extension to block the upcoming coverage? also, i guess you're not taking their wedding day off in May? :P

Pretty shameful the punishment (5 days unpaid and 2 days unpaid plus some community work) the 2 Metro Police officers received for their disparaging remarks (caught on tape) of Francie Munoz, the young lady with Down Syndrome.
The fact the bureaucracy of the Police Department from the Chief to their Union, side stepped and tripped over themselves to make apologies for these 2 officers when all the family wanted was a direct verbal apology.

They should have been fired, or at least sent to parking detail for 5 years without any chance of promotion or pay increases.

My Cavs won again. That's great, but the stupid ref ejected LeBron. He shouldn't have done that. LeBron got hit. I don't understand why the refs had to eject him, but they did. My Suns won as well. My Coyotes lost though. My Habs will win tonight and my Nets will win tonight hopefully. Bob Seger should be the king. He is alive. Bob Seger will live into his 90s, trust me.

Not on Facebook or any other social media myself, so I think I've got that particular field covered!
Now if only I can remember to avoid eTalk for the next six months or so, and everything will be
gravy!! My birthday is in early May, so I sure as hell hope that this fine twosome do me a real solid
and don't book their wedding on my special day!!!

Any chance that the big interview with Steve Simmons could possibly be conducted in a style similar
to his legendary Sunday Sun columns (seriously not taking the piss here!!). He has been boldly carrying on in the near-inimitable Larry King USA Today style, and it would surely be a blast to hear an aural version of this unique approach!!

If anyone has a question for Steve, he visits tomorrow.

I don't get the chance to read it as much as I did back in the day, and even though a lot of the
references are foreign to my non-sports wired brain, nevertheless I'm addicted to Mr. Simmons
kinetic energy in printed form!!

Mike, can you ask Steve, how the Grey Cup press conferences have changed since Jim "Shaky" Hunt passed away?

I enjoy Steve's writing & liked him TSN the Reporters. Please ask him (if he can answer) the TRUE story behind Dave Hodge's quitting the show & if Dave if still part of the TSN crew. Thanks.

@Rick C in Oakville,

I agree those officers' behaviour was reprehensible, but I mean, the punishment seems to fit the crime, no? Disgusting words, but still just words.

Aside, and I swear it's not clouding my judgement, but I've had a pretty positive experience with police lately with respect to my dooring. I really wasn't expecting a report to go anywhere, but they investigated it thoroughly and the guy is being charged criminally.

Glad to see that NBC finally fired Matt Lauer for his insipid lecherous ways!! The National Enquirer,
that reputable bastion of journalistic integrity(!) has been issuing stories about his philandering and
sexual antics for at least 15 years, and I guess NBC finally had no choice but to act upon the endless
allegations. Also, Andrew Kreisberg, executive producer of the CW Network's dreary DC superhero shows, had his recent suspension made permanent. At least some progress is being made on this front, but President GrabHerByThe... somehow still remains in the White House. Not really sure what kind of message this is sending. Just saying...

As a guy who frequently slams Bell and their bullshit "Lets Talk" crap it's good to see this come out. Lets Talk was actually part of the agreement to buy another company (name escapes me).

Ever notice these types of things only come from the CBC and never come from rival "private broadcasters". Can't be stirring the pot in the old boys club, can we now.

Ha ha Bell. http://www.cbc.ca/news/health/bell-employees-stressed-by-sales-targets-1.4418876

Well, my Habs and Nets won last night. My Suns lost though. My Cavs play tonight. My Coyotes play tonight. My Habs will win another one. Anyway, so tomorrow I will not be first. I may be 20th or 30th for all I know if that. Since you won't post before 8:00, and I have an 8:30 appointment which will take all morning long, then who knows when I'll be on.

@Urooj

Season 1 was great, season 2 didn't ring my bell, but now in Season 3, I get the point of season 2. This season is nothing short of awesome. The last 2 episodes blow my mind. I love the constant references to Trump as well. And kudos to the guy who plays Phillip Price, the CEO of E Corp. That guy deserves an Academy Award for his acting. He is brilliant in that part. His speech about him having to be the most important person in the room just defines corporate leaders and Trump.

What's awesome

- regular Easter eggs mentioning hacking collectives. Gregg Housh, a former lead architect in the early days of Anonymous was in line behind Dom telling her to hurry up

- The hacks are all real and possible too. Just it takes a little longer and the references to Linux. They are so accurate.

- And in season 3, the show is showing the ugly side of hacking. We are merely the players whereas it's the state sponsored guys who are the enemies. Watching Elliot get mind fucked by the Dark Army. And the real life reality that hacking can get you murdered. When you live in the shadows you live with some nasty people.

As the saying goes, Trust No One. Awesome show. It's a "tech" version of House of Cards

November 30, 2017 @ 8:59 AM

Mr Robot

Oh, and of course the reference to US military hacker The Jester when the machines are suddenly hit by ransonware and you can see Jesters logo. I asked him about it and they had approached him to be on the show.

So it appears that Matt Lauer really has the makings of an old-school James Bond villain, what with
his custom-installed, secret under the desk, remote-controlled door closing button. Now that he'll
be free(?) for the foreseeable future, perhaps Mike Myers might consider him for the role of a pervy
bad guy, if he ever gets around to making another Austin Powers movie?!? And can anyone else believe the stones on President Drumpf for having the gall to comment on this whole sordid affair?

A friend of mine has smoked mj with John Tory. He wants to report it, but his gf who is also a "known" person in the sports media sector has smoked as well with them. She would leave "Brad" if this was ever leaked out.

The comment from the fake Rinse here is an imitation of the real Rinse's comment about Rob Ford in March 2013. Here's the back story: http://www.torontomike.com/2013/05/the_comment_from_rinse_about_r.html

bsmntdwllr73: yes, try and avoid ETalk! ;)

I assume they'll do it on a Friday/Saturday? They've said UK gets no extra holiday so I am hoping it lines up with our 24 weekend - I've always wanted to go to the UK - and to go during such an event? I told my mom I'd love to just be sitting with other peeps and watching together. Kinda want to go for this hahaha. And to see the rest of England :P

I know a lot of lovely people born in May :D and just one non lovely person (an ex) haha
