Well, I managed to donate to Terry Fox, but I needed someone to do it for me because of the stupid capcha. I hate those things. Anyway, Terry Fox was disabled as well. I bet you if Terry Fox was still alive, he wouldn't like it if there were accessibility issues on a website that had to do with him. Capchas really don't belong anywhere. I hate them. Of course, I am not a fricken robot. Well, disappointed with my Orioles. Jeremy Hellickson blew up. Just all of a sudden got lit up. This sucks. My Diamondbacks won. See, the Dodgers are human. They're not as good as people think. My Indians were off yesterday. In football, my Ravens won and my Browns won, but my Cardinals lost. My Ravens and Browns are undefeated. One of them will go to the Superbowl.

Not on Twitter, so I'm voting here for the Larry Fedoruk KOTJ bonanza as my
favourite recent Toronto Mike episode. Keep up the great work!!

According to, an asteroid 3 miles wide is flying by earth today - a relatively close call.
To me, this just re-inforces the need to not stress about..well..anything, while appreciating what you do have.

At any moment, the world's experts on asteroids could tweet out the fact that they just discovered that a gargantuan rock is heading right for us, which will result in earth being inhabited only by single cell organisms. It's really only a matter of time me thinks, so live life....fully.

Has anyone seen that CHFI morning show commercial? If that is the best they could come up with to be funny it is truly doomed

September 1, 2017 @ 10:57 AM

8 degrees this morning! Already, sheesh.

Was a bit chilly biking in shorts & t-shirt to work!

Over/under on number of years till everyone calls it Scotiabank Arena: 4
The existing name is branded anyway, not like Skydome, and people (except for the old-timers who are outside the target demographic) started calling it Rogers Centre pretty quickly.

Yup it was cool ride into work for me too. I probably would have appreciated it on a bicycle as i sweat profusely every time i move a muscle these days but on my motorcycle it was not so great. I'm installing heated grips next week with some new handlebars which will be just in time i think.

Speaking of trips to work 3 times this week alone the 401 has had multiple lanes closed for big accidents either on my way to work or on my way home. Highly annoying i really wish people would get a grip on there driving here. Driving and riding in France was so much nicer with drivers actually knowing how to drive. Even in Nice and Monaco where it was pretty congested it was easy to get around without most of the clueless idiots we seem to have on the roads here. Not everyone was perfect of course , I was driving there obviously and i'm sure that caused no end of issues. The highways were amazing compared to the 401 that's for sure weirdly enough unless they were passing people kept to the right lane. That only happens in my dreams here.

So last night I went to see KD Lang at the Sony centre. Not really my choice and I have to say I wasn't super excited to go but was extremely pleasantly surprised at how much i enjoyed the show. Her band was amazing and her voice is still fantastic . A great selection of songs ranging from popish to kind of country all played with a jazz feel. Her live version of Hallelujah ( a song I've been mostly meh about no matter who does it ) gave me shivers. Cool version of Neil Young's Helpless as well. Very glad i didn't think of an excuse to take a pass.

I've still never heard anyone call it "Rogers Centre" outside of Blue Jays broadcasts or Sportsnet Connected where I'm sure there's been a company wide mandate of forcing the branded name.

Real people still call it "SkyDome" or simply "The Dome".

September 1, 2017 @ 2:23 PM

Urooj Islam

And since ACC is/was a branded name and "The Hangar" was a nickname for a branded name, I guess we can call Scotiabank Arena "The Vault" or as Toronto Mike suggested "The Cashbox" or some slang for a bank.

September 1, 2017 @ 2:32 PM

I heard someone on the FAN come up with a brilliant idea. Call it the Scotiabank Gardens.

September 1, 2017 @ 3:40 PM

My favourite road for biking home, Coxwell, is blocked with construction lately, and will be for some time if I understand correctly. Ironically Greenwood and Woodbine, which actually have bike lanes, kind of suck for it. At least Greenwood has the benefit of a Left Field Brewery stopover.

I took the Don Valley Trail today instead and regret it. I think that's the worst outbreak of midge orgy clouds I've ever encountered. I was coughing them up by the end.

From a selfish perspective bring it on baby, just as long as I'm near ground zero and one of the first to go. From a less selfish perspective, I'd like my granddaughter to have a long, happy, and healthy life.

@m m

I'm an old guy. I still call Skydome Skydome. I think I've always used ACC for the arena, and occasionally The Hangar. No need to change now. The sponsorship means nothing to me.

Scotiabank Gardens would get shortened to Gardens and I love it!

Don't forget Mike is doing the Terry Fox run again. Please sponsor him.

September 1, 2017 @ 10:34 PM

Baseball was awesome last night. My Indians won two games of a doubleheader. Edwin Encarnacion homered in the first game. 32 homers for Edwin Encarnacion. In the second game Roberto Perez homered. Also my Orioles won in 13 innings. That was close. My Diamondbacks won as well with a homer by Dan Descalso. Awesome night again and that's great. I hope they will get rid of the capcha on Terry Fox's site. Terry would probably understand that a capcha is a barrier. He wouldn't be happy with the site if he was still alive today.

Saw your tweet with you pulling the bike trailer. I hated the one I had, just to heavy to pull. I then bought a tag along bike, day and night difference. My son (and eventually my daughter) could pretty well go on any trail with ease with me.

Please tell me more about this tag along bike... remember, I'm using the trailer for two kids. The 3 year old and 1 year old goes in there, and I quite liked the resistance when biking, but the wheel broke and needs to be replaced and we're well past the manufacturer's warranty so my wife is going to try her luck with Costco, from whom she bought it online.

Fun fact: you don't need a Costco membership to buy from them online.

@TO Mike said, "Fun fact: you don't need a Costco membership to buy from them online."

Are the online deals worth it when shipping is added in?

@Blind Dave

Free shipping!

September 2, 2017 @ 8:49 PM

Re: Costco

We've bought 2 TVs from Costco online, and they did charge $50 for shipping, but the online price was $50 less than in-store, so it all evened out. And with many (most? all?) electronics, Costco doubles the manufacturer's warranty for free.

Costco online also has lots of stuff year-round that they only stock seasonally, if at all, in-store.

September 2, 2017 @ 9:05 PM

@ Mike

The tag-along bike concept won't help you out until one of your younger kids is on their own bike, but if you investigate that route, we really liked the "Trail-Gator" which I don't think is in stores any more but can be found used on Kijiji. It's an attachment that clamps onto your seat post, and lets you pull your kid's actual bike while they sit on it...the benefit being that if your kid wants to ride part-way, you just un-hook their bike from your seat post and they're free. It is different than other tag-along bikes which don't have that ability. We found we could do longer

September 2, 2017 @ 9:12 PM

Rick C in Oakville
This one is cool, can take 2 kids.
What is broken on your cart, could it be welded , most likely a wheel axle support.
Send me a picture I I might be able to mig weld it for you

September 2, 2017 @ 11:02 PM

Well, how about those Indians. Great they won. My Orioles got clobbered though. That was no good. My Diamondbacks won. JD Martinez hit another home run. That's awesome. I hope they all win today. That would be great. Tomorrow is Labour Day, the day I always hated when I was a kid. It meant getting ready to go back to boarding school which I hated. Labour Day always reminds me of having to go back to boarding school. I always got nervous. I wondered how much bullying I would get and also how many spankings I would get.

You got spankings in school?

September 3, 2017 @ 2:52 PM

There is no way in HELL you received spankings at your boarding school.
It would have been closed & criminal activity by staff.

September 3, 2017 @ 3:55 PM

spankings did happen at boarding schools. definitely. public schools too. back in the day it was considered ok punishment. true facts. sad.

September 3, 2017 @ 4:41 PM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

I believe spankings happened in school... as recently as the 70s.

The nun principal at my first primary school used to give the strap.

September 3, 2017 @ 5:03 PM

It was okay to spank when I was in boarding school. Teachers would give it on my hand like a slap, but the residence counselors used to pull down my pants and spank. One night I got three spankings in a row, and I remember it very very well. I also had an awful teacher in grade 6 who did health inspection every morning. One morning she would sniff your underarms. Another day she would check your teeth. Another day she would have you remove a shoe so she could smell your feet. This is really true. Bullying does suck, but I got a lot of it. Well, How about those Indians. Jose Ramirez got two homers and three doubles. He's so awesome hitting a homer from each side of the plate. Franky Lindor also homered. My Orioles managed to win again. That's so awesome. Wellington Castillo hit two homers and Mark Trumbo hit a homer. Also Mark Trumbo got the walkoff win. My Diamondbacks also won. This is so awesome. Brandon Drury and Chris Ianetta homered. Baseball is so good lately.

September 4, 2017 @ 8:19 AM

If all those accusations are true you have a lawsuit regardless of when it happened in the 60's, 70' or 80's. Principal in elementary school was suspended for 6 months for dampening kids hands with a paper towel before he gave the strap on their palms.

Physical, emotional & Sexual abuse. Unbelievable.
Seek a lawyer.

September 4, 2017 @ 12:06 PM

@ chris...Yes the strap did occur in the 60's & early 70's...grade 3 I got the Strap from a Nun VP...
As for the resident focused sports expert and a TM favorite...Remember she is a storyteller and a desperate attention seeker... Take that into fact before giving advise.

September 4, 2017 @ 2:18 PM

I am 57 and I can vividly remember having to put my hands on the desk while the principal smacked them with a ruler circa 1972 Meadowvale Public School. That was physical abuse on an 12 year old child, but I probably deserved it and I learned not to punch classmates ever again. By the way who's watching the Argos - Ticats labour day classic tonight..someone...anyone...????

September 4, 2017 @ 3:26 PM

If what you said is TRUE I cannot believe you or family didn't pursue legal advice with U going to boarding school even many years ago.
Fess up Cheryl - did your accusations really happen at boarding school with councilors & teachers?????

September 4, 2017 @ 3:46 PM

Rick C in Oakville

@Andrew, definitely happened in the 60's, as I had a few friends who received it, and usually with my friends parents blessings. One buddy's parents were Italian, and if he got in trouble at school, better watch out for the old man when he got home, no snowflakes in our generation. Not that it was right, but a different era.

Actually wanted to comment on a very small ebay purchase I made today. I had to replace a lock on a set of french doors for my sister that had a broken lever. I looked at over 5 or 6 Home depots, lowes, Rona's, even tried a few door and window sellers with no luck. Went on Ebay and found almost the identical piece for $5.00 USD. The kicker is free shipping from China, no wonder Canada Post can't make any serious profit, having to subsidize this purchase. I couldn't mail the same item to Vancouver for the same cost.

September 4, 2017 @ 5:04 PM

It is true. All this stuff I'm saying is very true about boarding school. Everyone complained about Miss Murray smelling people's feet and underarms, but she kept doing it all the time. Nobody really liked her. Anyway, how about those Indians? Great game. Carlos Santana and Jose Ramirez homered. My Orioles didn't do so well though. Another loss which sucks. My Diamondbacks won though. That's great. How about JD Martinez. He hit four homers. He's so awesome. Brandon Drury also homered. My Ravens, Browns, and Cardinals all play their first regular season games on Sunday. One of those teams will win the Superbowl.

Been offline for a couple of days due to holiday library closure, but feel like I should
chime on in on the KOTJ MC5 mothertrucker intro kerfuffle. I vote for you to keep it
'cause it is dangerous and rock 'n' roll used to be all about danger. Say, does anyone
even remember rock 'n' roll anymore?!? What would happen if future KOTJ guests chose
songs by the Geto Boys, N.W.A., Public Enemy, or 2 Live Crew? Obviously these groups'
songs are filled with all kinds of salty language, so it would be pretty hard to feature them
without some judicious editing. As a compromise, if this issue becomes too nuclear to
contain, may I suggest, instead, the theme music form Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood or perhaps
Sesame Street's end credit Funky Chimes as more suitable alternatives? That's just my two

I'm keeping it because it really gets my heart pumping and jazzed about the imminent jam kicking.

BTW, next to kick out the jams are a couple of members of Lowest of the Low, including Ron Hawkins.

September 5, 2017 @ 9:52 AM

Can't wait! Big fan of their songs Motel 30 and Gamble!!

September 5, 2017 @ 9:54 AM

True story: Most fast food places, supermarkets and elevators feature
crappy music, it is a proven fact. However, once upon a time some of the
downtown Burger King locations featured excellent music. College and Spadina
(1970s pop hits), Yonge and Shuter (1980s classics), and best of all at my local
Parkdale BK (King and Dufferin), classic hard rock and heavy metal. Sadly, those days
are long over. The first two locations now exclusively play your run-of-the-mill crappy
current hits, while my former HQ BK pumps out your classic '80s country hits for about
18 hours a day! Makes no sense to me as it doesn't appear like most of the staff
at this joint fit the big hat and pick-up truck demographic! What a pleasure it once
was, then, to regularly chow down on flame-broiled mediocrity whist listening to Dio
scream out such tunes as "Holy Diver". Boy, I miss those days!!!

September 5, 2017 @ 12:24 PM

Yeah, I've been in that Burger King at King and Dufferin a couple of times in the last few months, and while it's not something I usually notice, having the country music satellite radio station playing there did strike me as a weird choice.

September 5, 2017 @ 1:28 PM

@ H.O.E.,
Perhaps the country music is used as a deterrent to limit the amount of time
spent in this establishment by some of this neighbourhood's more questionable
characters? Funny how I just came up with that!!

September 5, 2017 @ 1:33 PM

The term mondegreen (misheard lyrics) has been bandied about several times
during past KOTJ episodes, so I figured that I might as well chime in with my very
own personal favourite: George Harrison wrote and recorded the song "Beware Of
Darkness" in 1970 and it featured the lyric 'beware of thoughts that linger'. However,
when the Californian progressive rock band Spock's Beard recorded this song in 1996,
they sang it as 'Beware of FARTS that linger'! No further explanation is necessary!!!

September 5, 2017 @ 2:16 PM

Baseball was so awesome last night. How about those Indians. 13 in a row. Homers by Jose Ramirez, Austin Jackson, and Adam Jones. How about those Orioles. Great win for them. Homers were two by Manny Machado, Jonathan Schoop, and Mark Trumbo. My Diamondbacks also won. Well, there is curling this weekend in Oakville. My trainer isn't curling though, but I'm for Kean all the way. They'll win this one.

September 6, 2017 @ 8:29 AM

Urooj Islam

Dual double digit win streaks and a walk off win!

Go Cheryl go!

September 6, 2017 @ 3:24 PM

My Orioles got rained out, but my Indians won again. That's great. Jose Ramirez is sure on fire. He got another homer as well as Carlos Santana. My Diamondbacks also won. That's great. Baseball is so awesome. Well, curling tomorrow and football starts on the weekend. Cardinals, Brown, and Ravens will all win. Kean will win the spiel in Oakville.
