House of Lords Closing - Vintage CFNY Ad

In the mid-to-late 90s, I lived at Charles Street and Yonge for a couple of years. I was going to school down the street, so it was awfully convenient. During this period of my life, I got every haircut at House of Lords at 639 Yonge Street (website).

As a young man, House of Lords seemed very cool. They played loud music, had a funky creative vibe and the price was right. I think it was $14 a cut back then.

House of Lords is closing for good this October after 51 years. They're blaming increasing property taxes.

Here's a great old ad for House of Lords that aired on CFNY back in the day.

That escalated quickly.

I think their ads are still all over CP24.

On twitter he also blamed bike lanes (?) for closing his business.

What we really want to know is if you got your shoes from Master John's? :)

Hope what replaces it isn't another Rexall or Shopper Drug Mart.

Wasn't bike lanes he was blaming, it was the mayor on TV launching Bikeshare expansion, as a symbol of where the taxes are going. (True or not...)

@ Shoes, bought a pair of 4" platforms from Master Johns when Kiss was big. Sometime around 1975.
Wore them maybe 10 times in grade 9.

Throughout the 90s I bought my Dr. Martens at IXL which was just down the street from the House of Lords on Yonge.

@Patrick: Sadly, that's exactly what's going to happen.

Most establishments will be gone for building condos as $ talks.
My theory.

I never went to House of Lords; however, I remembered walking by and thinking, "How cool." I never went in because I did not have a lot of money back then (I never got my first p/t job unit I was 16yo).

Anothor icon gone, this is too bad. :-(

I went there throughout the 70's. Wore a long shag which had to be cut often. Loved House of Lordss.
