Well, my Orioles got rained out last night. My Indians had a scheduled day off. My Diamondbacks won though. Anyway, let's hope for lots of baseball wins tonight. I can't wait until my Cavs play again. I hope it's soon. Cavs are going to repeat. They will do it for the next few years until my Suns and Nets get good again. My Habs or Coyotes will win the cup next year. This year, who cares. My Habs should have been right there. Well, no news about my breast ultrasound yet. I hope it's nothing. I don't like going there.

Weird to think that likely-certain potential NHL HOFers like Iginla, Ovechkin, Lundquist, D and H. Sedin, Luongo, Price, Thornton, and Marleau may have a total of 0 Cups between them when they retire. And none of them are particularly close to a title, either.

Go Pens!

IMHO, the Caps should keep Ovechkin and retool. I don't know if they can afford to keep that core with the salary cap, but it's a very deep, very good team that just had a few bad breaks against Sid and the gang. Of that list of future NHLers, Ovie is the closest to a cup (so long as they don't blow it up in Washington).

May 12, 2017 @ 8:59 AM

Rob J

It would be funny if all the pundits bail on the Caps next year and they go on to win! Like someone said, why even predict the NHL playoffs? None of it makes any sense. (Especially the clear lack of any real home-ice advantage compared to the significant home-court advantage in the NBA)

May 12, 2017 @ 9:26 AM

I'm just stopping in to make sure Cheryl found her way...

She even beat Blind Dave here.

Doesn't help that we moved the door on him.

@Rob J

Exactly. In the NBA, we all saw Golden State vs. Cleveland coming from a mile away. We'll all be shocked if that doesn't happen.

Meanwhile, in the NHL, I'm loading up on Chicago players because I predict they're going to the finals. They lost in four.

The blind leading the blind...

May 12, 2017 @ 9:57 AM

Rob J

Saw a study by "Five Thirty Eight" that showed that playing at home in the playoffs is an advantage in NFL and NBA but irrelevant in MLB and NHL, which means having the last at-bat and line-change are over-rated and that referees can be influenced by the hometown crowds in basketball and football.

I don't follow the NBA but do know the crowd at the ACC can be church-like even in the playoffs. Seems like the Raptors may be missing out on a potential advantage.

I know McCown has mused about giving the higher-ranked team the option of starting a series on the road. Imagine the stones a GM would need to sign on to that.

Does Cheryl cheer for any MLS teams? I hear Minnesota United could use a new fan.

Mike, can you possibly explain the thread. It seems the debate with those guys has been running for five years. Is it a joke or legitimate?

Not a joke at all. 100% legit.

May 12, 2017 @ 11:38 AM

IMHO, Ovechkin is one of those great players who can't win. Whether it is the NHL or World Cups or Olympics, it seems whatever team he is on will lose. The Caps have put many great players around him and the result is always the same. Time to move on.

May 12, 2017 @ 12:33 PM

Caps are a good team..through 82 games..come crunch time something just goes sideways for them.

I also think its easier for a centre man to change a game then a winger ..I can't spell his name, but the centre man they have who tries to fly like a bird when he scores maybe need to find some heart and some class maybe? I understand celebrating a goal but that just stupid!

Keep Ovi, Keep Backstrum (spelling) and Holtby, keep a a couple stud defence man and blow the rest up.

I want the Pen to repeat..but think Nashville is playing really tight grind it out hockey.

May 12, 2017 @ 1:14 PM

Rob J

I'm not an analytics die-hard, but man, the Predators shine in that regard, especially defensively. Ducks' coach Carlyle is the anti-fancy-stat coach prototype, so needless to say, a lot of tired and predictable mudslinging between the 2 camps in the media will ensue over the next week. Hope Steve Simmons can keep up!

May 12, 2017 @ 2:42 PM

Urooj Islam

There's positives and negatives to both the NBA playoffs and NHL playoffs.

Sure, the NHL playoffs are wildly unpredictable especially in the early rounds but do we get the match-ups we want when they should happen? Probably not. The teams with the two highest point totals in the conference shouldn't be playing each other in Round 2.

And sure, the NBA is incredibly predictable and the early rounds are usually wipeouts but we're going to get the heavyweight Spurs/Warriors series and likely LeBron/Spurs Part 4 or LeBron/Warriors Part 3 match-ups to follow.

The Penguins are the only team remaining in the NHL playoffs that truly deserves to play for a Stanley Cup based on what they did in the regular season, the Predators, Ducks and Senators were thoroughly mediocre.

So, you can have the unpredictability of the NHL playoffs potentially leading to many undeserving teams in the championship hunt or the predictability of the NBA playoffs followed by a guaranteed great match-up between two truly great teams.

May 12, 2017 @ 3:33 PM

I derive an obscene amount of pleasure from visiting the parking guys thread and seeing that there are people who believe their legal problems can be solved by posting on a several-year-old thread on the Toronto Mike website. 😀

May 12, 2017 @ 3:50 PM

Jason from Sudbury

As much as I don't see the Senators getting past the Penguins I'm still gonna cheer for them. Anything is possivle. At this point I just wanna see a Canadian team bring the cup home...24 years is way too long.

May 12, 2017 @ 3:56 PM

I am soo peeeded..Cheryl does not care about hockey anymore, yet, for 90 + games we hear about "my teams" but when"my" teams get runover by a bus then she does not care..
FINE,but.. final 4 start tonight....made $dough betting agaist da habs and the handicaps
Now I get hit by a train cause I have no MY Team to pick against..I hate that !
It was soo ez using her brain.

@Jason from Sudbury

I too want to see a Canadian team bring the cup home, so long as that team is the Toronto Maple Leafs.

May 12, 2017 @ 4:36 PM

I never understood the whole "Canadian team" argument. PM Trudeau made it today, saying that all of Canada should cheer for the Senators, including Torontonians and Montrealers. I think that's bogus. The NHL is a regional league of cities, this isn't the Olympics. Players come from all over the world, and teams play a wide variety of Canadians, Americans, and Europeans. The idea that Americans should cheer for remaining "American teams" when their team gets knocked out sounds ridiculous, but it's equally as ridiculous when applied to the Canadian context. I will be actively cheering against Ottawa in the next round, and I'd love to see them lose.

May 12, 2017 @ 5:01 PM

I've downloaded it but haven't tried it yet. I plan to try it for some rides next week and write about the experience here.

Caveat emptor that Biko exists to mine and sell data about you.

They removed the requirement for access to your contact list after an uproar yesterday, though.

By my calculation, if 10 km of cycling earns me a free cold brew at Jimmy’s Coffee, I'm good for three free drinks a day!

May 12, 2017 @ 7:06 PM

Rob J

Been a sports fan for a few decades now, but will never understand the concept of cheering for another team if mine is out. I spend zero seconds wondering what my Plan B team is. Plus, watching the games without caring who wins is actually very relaxing.

I don't get how a Leaf fan would feel any joy at all if the Sens won it all next month, or ever.

May 12, 2017 @ 7:28 PM

Rick C in Oakville
I am currently working in Goose Bay Labrador, and found the whole town in darkness after a 500+km drive from Lab City. Unbelievably beautiful day and power isn't expected back on until 3 pm Saturday. Hope Newfoundlanders can supply more reliable power when it gets Musk Rat falls and Churchill Falls on line. Going to be a cool night, expected to be around Zero and no heat. Traveling for a living is starting to suck big time, need to get my retirement plans moved up,( pipe dream).

May 12, 2017 @ 9:18 PM

Blind Dave

Thanks for moving the door. I was wondering what popped me in the beak! I even stubbed my damned toe too, thanks to you! Actually, I rarely check in before Friday evening anyway. As @Rick C said above, retirement plans are a pipe dream.

I still have about 9% vision in my best eye. I do enjoy audio books but for something like this I use a 27" monitor and blow the font up REAL BIG. I can juuuuuust see my smartphone but if I have to read any more than a few words I use a 5x handheld magnifier. I've been using workarounds in one form or another all my life. It's as natural to me as drinking a cup of coffee and it's no big deal.

I thought about adopting a hockey team for the playoffs, but as I mentioned the other week, I just never got around to it. I used to be a devoted sports fan but I've lost interest over the years, priorities changed, and I never found the sports passion again.

I need to go on the tread now. I was a bad boy today and thoroughly blew apart my daily calories allotment. Friday is the last day in my weekly cycle and I'm still on the good side, but need to bump it up a bit. This all started several years ago with @Toronto Mike's advice. I've gone from 203 lb to 177 lb. It's a simple approach of eating smaller portions and getting proper exercise. Just cals in and cals out. Nothing fancy.

May 12, 2017 @ 10:16 PM

Urooj Islam

Why isn't Bob Cole calling Predators/Ducks? Paul Romanuk is atrocious.

And then we have to listen to Jim Hughson call Senators/Penguins and through the Cup Final?

Definitely switching to NBC for the Cup Finals if the option presents itself.

May 12, 2017 @ 10:25 PM

Leafs are done, and so is my interest in NHL.

TFC's start is getting impressive. An away win is always a bonus, but a very rare win in Columbus by our "Reds", midweek no less, makes it all that much more enjoyable to savor.

And what a difference a week makes, eh?
7 teams now playing worse than the jays, who are now up to, .417.
Baltimore, .667 & NY, .636, don't think either clip is sustainable,...

Is this the making of an extended winning streak?
Jays are on a 3 game roll - I'm wearing my rally cap, everywhere, go scrubs go,....
Bautista, a 2 run shot,...
Biagini makes it into the 6th,....
Travis drives in a pair,....
Barney, successfully , a fucking SACRIFICE bunt!!! CALL RIPLEY'S!!!!
Pretty soon they might start stealing bases,.....
But what was really good about tonight's game, it was over fast, 2 and a half hours!

Stroman tomorrow, so there's hope,.... 4 in a row?
Wear your rally cap......

And yes, I still think they should trade Donaldson.

Back to hockey
Here's a question I don't much care about how it's answered, How good would the Caps be if they traded Ovie and kept as much of the core core whatever/whoever they get in return for the trade?

They are a good team, just that they can't win with Ovie, and Ted, the owner.

gotta think Bettman has backed off from the ledge now that his final four is Ottawa, Nashville, Pittsburgh and Anaheim. Gotta think him and the American networks will be pulling for an Anaheim, Pittsburgh final, no?

Imagine NBC's numbers if it was an Edmonton, Ottawa final, that little smug fucker would be throwing himself out the window, after setting himself on fire, and stabbing himself all the way down,.....

May 12, 2017 @ 11:24 PM

Baseball was bad last night. It really was. What a shame. Tomlin pitched a real gem, but my Indians lost 1 to 0. That really sucks. Also my Orioles lost. This sucks as well. Oh well, my Diamondbacks won so that's a great thing, so I did get a win. Anyway, I guess there will be a game 7 in the Wizards Celtics series so no start date for my Cavs playing the next round yet. Anyway, my Cavs will repeat. I just know they will.

Hughson gets the big games and the finals because it's in his contract.

Romanuk over Cole for the #2 spot is interesting. It's possible at Bob's age the heavy workload is a factor... at least I hope that's the reason. I don't mind Romy, but Bob Cole is the best I've ever heard.

May 13, 2017 @ 8:25 AM

Rob J

Crapping on Ovechkin without noting his lower body injury which occurred I guess magically (certainly not the Kadri hit, wink wink) ) in the Caps' Round 1 series is burying the lede.

May 13, 2017 @ 9:07 AM

Just glad there's less Millen!

May 13, 2017 @ 11:10 AM

Can someone explain why or how Jim Hughson is considered such a big time play by play caller? I've listened to his game calls over the years and even endured him on one of my NHL video games and don't see how he could be seen as an improvement over the likes of Bob Cole (listen to this past game 7 pens-caps game and tell me he's not the best we got), Chris Cuthbert, Gord Miller, Paul Romanuck et all. At best, he's a good regional play caller and should be out west, probably with Vancouver since he's a fanboy of said team, but not calling national games.

Is he like John Shannon and just have the "right" connections to get such a contract?

To me, it doesn't make sense especially when I see on twitter and the likes the endless complaints like my own over his calling and such and yet it seems as if he's completely untouchable in Rogers eyes.

May 13, 2017 @ 12:42 PM

collingwood dave

When I watch the games I pay no mind who is commentating, I just watch. By the way Cheryl knew the Habs were going to win the cup and then knew the Caps would win, and now she knows the Cavs will win. In that case I am all in with the GSW.....

May 13, 2017 @ 1:40 PM

Well, baseball was bad last night. My Indians lost again. The hitting just isn't there. I don't know why nobody is hitting. Also my Orioles lost, but it was really close and they should have won. My Diamondbacks also lost even though Nick Ahmed hit two home runs and Paul Goldschmidt homered again. It's all bad. Yes, the Cavs will repeat. I know they will. I wish they would hurry up and start the next round. The Wizards winning on Friday makes it slower to decide on a start date.

Yikes, a lot of doom and gloom in the comments under that post, aside from the one written by a soothsayer about using a Dodgers' victory as a template for come-from-behind-success for Toronto.

Not sure if many remember this guy from the Energy 108 and Hot 103.5 days, but Robert Miles passed away ("Children" and "One and One")

He had been battling cancer for the last nine months.

May 15, 2017 @ 12:41 AM

Well, how about those Indians. That's great that they won. Trevor Bauer pitched well. Jason Kipnis hit two home runs. Lonnie Chisenhall and Carlos Santana also homered. Too bad they're not in first place though. My Orioles and Diamondbacks didn't win though. More losses. Oh well. At least my Indians won. Well, are we going to find out when my Cavs play again? It's sure been a long break. I hope so.

Noticed friend-of-the-show Edward Keenan was looking for urban etiquette tips for his Star column...might be an interesting angle for a 3rd appearance. He's an underrated guest in the TM universe, IMO.

May 15, 2017 @ 7:21 PM

How about those Indians. That was a great game. Well, they almost lost it, blew it so good thing they held on to win. Carlos Carrasco is injured though. He has a tight pectoral muscle. Anyway, Lonnie Chisenhall and Franky Lindor homered for my Indians. My Diamondbacks also won last night. That was great with homers by Dan Descalso, Jake Lamb and Yasmani Tomas. My Orioles had the night off. Anyway, my Cavs play tomorrow in Boston. Too bad they don't have home court advantage, but they'll win anyway. Cavs are the best. They're going to repeat.

May 16, 2017 @ 7:01 AM

Hi Mike. Biking question for you: looking to take my soon to be 3 year old for rides around my neighbourhood and paved bike trails. Would you recommend a bike trailer/chariot or rear mounted seat? I have a standard hybrid bike and I am leaning towards the chariot to avoid issues with balance while riding and stopping. I assume most chariots are collapsible for "easy" transport and storage?

I love biking questions!

For my two young kids, we use a trailer. This one, to be precise.

It not only collapses for easy storage, but it doubles as a stroller.

May 16, 2017 @ 10:51 AM

Thanks for the response. Out of curiosity, which and model trailer is the one you own? (I cannot make out manufacturer badge from the picture.) From a quick survey of various places, it looks like a trailer will cost around $500.

May 16, 2017 @ 11:38 AM

Well, my Indians lost. That was no good. Danny Salazar gave up five homers. Edwin Encarnacion homered for my Indians, but it wasn't enough. My Orioles won though. Good thing they came back in extras. Chris Davis homered twice and also Mark Trumbo homered and JJ Hardy homered so that's great. My Diamondbacks also won. Zach Grienke won again and Yasmani Tomas with another homer. Tonight my Cavs play. It's about time. They are going to win it all again. That's because Cavs are the best.

May 17, 2017 @ 7:47 AM

Well, how about those Cavs. Three more games to go in this round, then onto the finals and they will win it all. My Cavs are the best. Baseball not so good. My Indians lost. That sucked, but the rooky, Bradley Zimmer hit his first homeo run. My Orioles also lost. That was no good. My Diamondbacks won though. Another Jake Lamb homer. That's great. Anyway, so my eyes are sore today and they're watery. It's not a good thing. I can't see anyway. I wish I could just have artificial eyes. They probably wouldn't be sore. Any little bit of light hurts them now though.
