@Sam in Pickering

The next episode is going to be a lot of fun.

Retrontario kicks out the jams!

Tunes and Jingles about Toronto / Ontario...

Kids show themes (Hammy Hamster, Kitzel & Sesame Street funk),
The Start - Hey You!
Delores Clamen
Guido Basso
Roland Parliament
Harry Forbes
Terry Bush
Tommy Ambrose

Then it's Ed the Sock and Liana K.

May 5, 2017 @ 9:42 AM

Has Ed the Sock found a new place for his weekly YouTube show yet? He's been doing it from the lobby of the Yonge/Dundas Hard Rock Café, which is about to be turned into a Shoppers Drug Mart.

BTW, for those who complain about all the Shoppers being the same, they did a good job with the one at Bloor and Runnymede that's in an old movie theatre, which you might not have been able to tell during its preceding use as a Chapters.
I don't get the strange compulsion that so many in Toronto have, that every single dingy dull dirt brown building must be preserved if it's a hundred years old. There's nothing wrong with keeping some of them around and many are and will continue to be, but just being one hundred years old does not necessarily make it historic or worth preserving (not to mention they can be horrible fire hazards). It's Toronto, a city that's not very old. There is no Parthenon or Roman Colosseum. For many years the little local neighbourhood newspaper seemed to constantly have articles about The Revue Cinema on Roncesvalles and the owners struggles to keep it going. It's mildly interesting that's it's been there for a hundred years, but I just don't get the fascination with it. I've been there three times in the last few years as part of crowds of maybe 50 paying customers. It's a dingy old movie theatre. I sincerely wouldn't care if it also got converted into a drug store or an A&W, or demolished along with some surrounding stores to become another new condo and retail complex.

I will ask Ed all about this... errr, at least I'll ask Steve K. Should be a fun convo!

Thumbs-up to the Toronto Sun. Though its editorials are loathsome and appeal to the most base emotions of right-wing readers, its sports section remains a rich source of coverage without the inherent conflict of interest faced by the Bell-Rogers propaganda machine on TV and radio. Despite the brutal cuts at Postmedia, the Sun serves the southern Ontario sports fan very well.

May 5, 2017 @ 12:50 PM

Just my opinion but this Rob J person is ruining this blog.

May 5, 2017 @ 2:23 PM

Cheryl - where are you?

May 5, 2017 @ 2:31 PM

Substitute the word 'blog' for: dinner party, meeting, night out, TV show, movie, back yard, church service, relationship, family reunion, holiday, trip, and story, and you get the picture.

For some reason, Cheryl couldn't find this new Open Mike so she commented on last Friday's Open Mike instead:

May 5, 2017 @ 3:10 PM

Earlier this week, on the way to dentist and doctor appointments in the Don Mills area, on the westbound 401 parking lot, courtesy a vehicle fire in the collector lanes at Whites Road in Pickering creating jams on every westbound route, I had plenty of time to listen to the morning drive shows on 88.1 and 102.1, since it did not matter what the traffic reports on 680 said. I am pretty sure that Melani on 102.1 is the youngest morning drive host on a major station in southern Ontario. Mel pairs better with Adam; to me, she and Fred just did not develop the chemistry they needed. Even if you consider it damning with faint praise, this may be the best morning show on 102.1 for a number of years now.

Josie Dye has injected a whole lot of good over on Indie88. It is so obvious that she is the tenured professional of the show and drags the other two along/up. She is a massive improvement. The show now has some life and personality.

Having said/written that, I'd be flipping between the two - and 680 for the traffic when I have to drive in morning rush hour.

Having now said all of that

Hugh Dillon!
Great get. I saw them a number of times at bars and clubs in the mid 90's.

-what was it like fighting to get attention while the Hip were exploding? Was it tough climbing the ranks....both from Kingston.

-how did spitting at the audience start?

-drug & alcohol abuse has been heavily documented. How much did it limit the band's success and how did you kick it?

-how was the transition from Lead rocknroll guy to Lead actor in 3 TV series?

Looking forward to it!

Really enjoying the Stormin' Norman podcast. Great convo as always, guys.

It's gonna be hot for a few days on the prairies and I have been out on the trails getting my exercise. It's a wonderful treat after another winter. Not a bad winter, really, but winter is winter.

Don't have a hockey team to cheer for. I had a few possibilities lined up but it never amounted to anything. I saw a bit of the Pit-Wsh game the other evening but for the most part I've lost interest.

Okay. Here I am. I have no idea why I couldn't find this open Mike yesterday. I wish I knew the answer, but I don't. I don't know why it hides, but it does and I can't find it. Honestly that is the whole truth. Then a day later it comes up. Anyway, let's all wish a happy birthday to a couple very important people. Happy birthday to Bob Seger who really should be the king of rock and roll. He's 72 today and still alive and well. Bob Seger will live for many years. Also happy birthday to hockey superstar Brendan Gallagher. You should know him. He's a Hab and since they didn't do it this year, Habs will win the cup next year or Coyotes. Anyway, how about those Cavs. Cavs are the best. Another championship. They'll win it because they will close this series out tomorrow and then onto the next round which they will win and onto the finals. Cavs all the way. They can do it. My Orioles won last night. Chris Davis homered. My Orioles are great. My Diamondbacks won last night with Zach Grienke pitching a gem and Paul Goldschmidt hit two homers. My Indians weren't so good yesterday. It sucked. It's no good that they lost. Edwin Encarnacion hit a home run, but that's all they got. Anyway, so the Caps are going to win tonight and then two more after that so they go to the next round. Caps are winning the cup this year. I just know it.

May 6, 2017 @ 8:03 AM

@ Rob J...agreed, I read the Sun every day just for the sports. I especially love Steve Simmons. His Sunday columns are the best....

I know this is heresy to Toronto fans, but I nominate last night-this morning's Ducks-Oilers' game as The Game of the Decade. Three goals by Anaheim in the final few minutes with Gibson pulled to tie it, followed by a top-level-skill goal in 2OT to win it at 2:39 EDT makes me so glad I'm a sports fan.

Oh, and I should have posted this yesterday to 'Gregor': Fuuuuuck yooouuuu.

@Rob J

It wasn't game seven, so I think we still own the collapse crown, but being up 3-0 with 3:16 left in the third period and losing a playoff game is something else. It took us 10 whole minutes to blow our 3 goal 3rd period lead.

And the controversy around the tying goal is something else....

Quite the game... and I slept through all the drama.

May 6, 2017 @ 3:51 PM

Rob J

For me it brought back some unfortunate memories of Star-Oilers in 1997!

I was thinking today that the only downside of last night's historic 4 hour thrill-a-thon was that every game in any sport will now be dull in comparison!

Haven't listened to the Headstones in years, can't wait for the Hugh Dillion Podcast.
Here is a great interview from some time ago
Hugh could have easily ended up in a far worse place, glad he got a chance to clean up.
Maybe ask him if crowd sourcing an album as quickly they did several years ago, restart his music career?

May 6, 2017 @ 10:14 PM

Well, so it's too bad you don't care about Bob Seger and Brendan Gallagher enough to wish them a happy birthday. Nobody, I mean nobody wished either one a happy birthday. Anyway, Caps won. I told you they would. Caps are winning the next two to go to the next round. I told you they're winning the cup. My Cavs are going to close the series out today. My Indians were losing 1 to 0 during most of the game, but then they won 3 to 1. Homers by Carlos Santana and Francisco Lindor both in the ninth inning. My Orioles won as well. Manny Machado and Trey Mancini homered again. That's great. My Diamondbacks lost though. That was no good. Anyway, so it will be great when my Cavs close out the series.

May 7, 2017 @ 7:55 AM

Well, how about those Cavs. They won. They go on to the next round. Eight more games to go. Cavs are repeating this year. I just know it. How about those Indians. They only scored one run, but they won with great pitching from Mike Clevinger. My Indians are in first place where they belong. My Orioles won again. Too bad they're not in first. My Diamondbacks lost though which is no good. Anyway, so Caps tonight. Yes, the Caps are winning the cup. Two more to go in this round. My Cavs have another week or so to rest I think. Bring on the next round.

I missed Friday as i was driving/boating to my sisters place in Beachburg. She's the sister who lost her home in a fire a few months back. We went up to help cheer her up. I think we managed that so the tedious drive up and back was worth it.

Flooding up her way and between there and Toronto is pretty bad. The Ottawa river in Pembroke was over the docks in the marina by about a meter yesterday when we had a quick look around. Nearer to my sisters place lots of fields were flooded from the river as well.
Creeks looked like rivers, ditches looked like Creeks and ponds started looking like Lakes. Not to mention the flooded fields that will cause quite a bit of disruption to farmers planting schedules.
Crazy. The house they are renting while a new one is built for them had a sump pump in the basement running 24/7 while we were there.

On the way home yesterday we went through Tweed and the park at the south end was completly submerged. we also saw a few homes surrounded by water south of there.

Makes me glad I'm on the 16th floor!

Once we got to the 401 we just missed witnessing a Rollover at the west bound Enroute near Trenton. It looked pretty scary. we were getting off for a pee break and driver change when brakes started slamming on in the traffic lanes just ahead of us. when we parked we could see a small SUV on it's side in the passing lane. It looked like everybody got out Ok. And once there the paramedics did not appear to be frantically working on anyone. scary stuff though.

Caps are not winning the cup..even if the manage to eat a horse and its's shoe's and they beat the Pens (which I don't see happening) they won't beat the West..They have talent, but you need more then talent to win..Just ask Justin Williams :)

Interesting off-season coming up for the Raptors.

They've clearly hit their glass ceiling as a team with this core but they're also in the midst of their most successful run in franchise history (four straight years in the playoffs, back to back years of winning at least one playoff series including the conference finals berth in 2016) so one can only guess what they'll do.

Do they spend like crazy to retain Lowry and Ibaka in order to ensure one and done or two and done playoff berths for the next few years or take a step back in the short-term in order to build something for the long-term?

May 8, 2017 @ 5:35 PM

Well, guess what. The series is tied. Yes, the Caps will win the cup. Look. The series is all tied up and the cup is theirs this year. Next year will be a Habs cup or a Coyotes cup. My Orioles won. That's great. Mark Trumbo hits a home run. That's great. It's about time. Also Trey Mancini hit one and Joey Rickard hit one. Unfortunately the fricken Yankees are in first place though. Well, my Indians lost. That sucked. They couldn't score any runs until the end. They better win tonight, but they're still in first place. Anyway, my Diamondbacks didn't play. Cavs are winning the championship again this year. They'll win it next year unless my Suns or Nets manage to get better and win it.

May 9, 2017 @ 7:15 AM

Buck and Pat on sportsnet are dreadful.Winning times 15/16 and loosing times 17 they are terrible.
The 5 th LARGEST media market in North America and a lock on Canadian people 25 Million +we all deserve and should be able to see and hear soo much better.
The people of Canada and Blue Jay fans deserve better.
Clearly the owner/broadcaster does not give a shitt...
It is time the people/all fans speak up !
When Dan Schulman does some games, it just magnifies how really pathetic Buck and Pat are.

May 9, 2017 @ 7:48 PM

How about those Indians. That's great. They won and that was a great game. Yan Gomes hit a three run homer to break the game open. Carlos Carrasco pitched a gem. Also my Orioles managed to win in extra innings with Mark Trumbo scoring with the bases loaded. My Indians and Orioles are in first place. My Diamondbacks didn't win though. That's not good. Tonight the Caps will win game 7. Yes, the Washington Capitols will win the cup. I know this. My Habs should have made it to the second round. Well, bad news is I have to have a breast ultrasound today. I'm scared as hell. I get called a couple days after my mammogram and get told I have to have an ultrasound at 12:30. At least I don't have work to worry about. I'm glad I retired. I got a big tax refund so that's a good thing. I'm doing okay. I haven't worked since December.

May 10, 2017 @ 8:02 AM

Bye Bye Washington :) enjoy a round a golf or two :)

May 10, 2017 @ 10:32 PM

Rob J

If there were a god, I'd thank her so hard for not predestining me to become a Capitals' fan.

May 10, 2017 @ 11:11 PM

The Caps lost. No good. I don't know who will win the cup now. The Caps couldn't get it together. Baseball sucked last night. My Indians blew a lead. Actually they blew two leads. It's awful. They really should have won. My Orioles should have won as well, but didn't win. Mark Trumbo did hit a home run though as well as Manny Machado, but no win for my Orioles. My Diamondbacks did win though with home runs by Nick Ahmed and Yasmani Tomas. One good thing happened. The rest of the night sucked. Anyway, I had my breast ultrasound. It went okay. They better not call me back though. They better just think it's normal. I don't like having to go there all the time. Well, I wonder if the new open Mike will hide tomorrow. I have no idea why that happens. It just happens.

May 11, 2017 @ 7:17 AM

Positive thoughts Cheryl that all is well with your results.

My wife is having issues in that department right now. You ladies are tough cookies.

Well...Oilers are out. I was really hoping they would beat the Ducks. They probably would've if they hadn't shit the bed in game 5. I had a feeling that would come back to haunt them. Oh well its all up to Ottawa now. As much as I don't see them getting past Pittsburgh I'm still going for them. Anything is possible.

May 11, 2017 @ 12:26 PM

If Pittsburgh was healthy I would say it's a no brainer for them to beat the Sens, but they aren't close to the Sen's have a shot, plus erik karlsson is playing pretty great hockey at the moment.

I call Pitts and Nashville Finale.

Think Nashville will win. (Hope Pitts does, but Nashville looked good thus far)

It really is a fantastic song...and perfect for your podcast as there's quite a bit of instrumental intro before the lyrics, so you can do a proper wrap-up. I've already searched-out some more of their stuff. Seeing them live would definitely be a great time!

May 11, 2017 @ 11:07 PM

Hi Mike. Biking question for you: looking to take my soon to be 3 year old for rides around my neighbourhood and paved bike trails. Would you recommend a bike trailer/chariot or rear mounted seat? I have a standard hybrid bike and I am leaning towards the chariot to avoid issues with balance while riding and stopping. I assume most chariots are collapsible for "easy" transport and storage?
