It appears that Marc Emery will be in court yet again. When will Canada finally lock up this man permanently? This man is a long time criminal and is nothing more than drain on society.

March 10, 2017 @ 9:24 AM

First, I hope they find the missing car and, more importantly, the little girl in it.

Second, this incident is not the mother's fault. At all.

But people, your car only needs 30 seconds to warm up before you need to drive it. It will warm up faster once you start driving it. And you will waste less fuel.

Finally, and unrelated, if you're driving along at night, minding your own business, and some yahoo starts flashing his/her brights on and off quickly behind you, it's most likely because you're (a) blocking the passing lane on the freeway or (b) you're only driving with your day time running lights on. Please make sure your full headlights are on at night.

The missing girl has been found and she's okay.

March 10, 2017 @ 9:40 AM

I am glad the little girl has been found! @Derrick - I will keep that in mind, because I tend to forget to turn my lights on and occasionally I am sure I block the passing lane.

I finally got my ParksCanada passes in the mail so I am happy.

I'm going out tonight to finally drink and dance with some good friends and a dance partner who can really dance so I am elated.

happy weekending! stay warm.

Friendly reminder that the ParksCanada pass will not work with Provincial Parks. I think there will be some confusion there.

Yes. This is still the way I check Facebook. I create a "list" with everyone in it I want to keep up with.

I wonder why your list stopped working....

For anyone who is curious, here's my original article:

Glad the little girl has been found.

Re: Warming up the car
I've heard 30 seconds like Derek said, but I've also heard that you should let it warm up for a couple minutes. Either way, I choose to let it warm up for a couple minutes so that I'm not getting into a cold car.

March 10, 2017 @ 10:19 AM

I kept getting my program interrupted this morning. ..those amber alerts are way too loud and too frequent and I don't even live anywhere near Toronto.

March 10, 2017 @ 10:20 AM

from what i understood, the mum was not letting the car warm up, but was returning to the house to get another child.
for me - i get into the car, turn it on, and go. i dont even wait 30 seconds (unless i have to clear snow/ice). i've heard both sides of the argument but in the end i just want to get going.

@poindexter: Voice of Reason lives in an alternate universe in terms of his thinking. His moniker is at best oxymoron based on what he writes on this blog.

I'm sure he's one of those people that saw those government made movies back in the 70's that tell us all about the evils of weed and how it leads to anarchy and still abides by that thought process today.

March 10, 2017 @ 11:33 AM

So do the leafs make the playoffs?

Watched part of Period 1 and all of 3..they are fun to watch when they are clicking.
it will be a good race to the end, lots of good teams fighting for those two last spots.

Marc Emery, the cannabis activist? Please.

March 10, 2017 @ 2:01 PM

The Voice of Reason

Not against the man himself, but the laws of the land have to be followed or we anarchist society. During prohibition bootleggers were jailed for breaking the law. In Emery's case it is the same type situation. If Emery chose to fight through legal means and won, I would have no issue with him. I don't like the highway speed laws, but follow them as I believe in what we stand for as a free nation.

You may be right, but until then, he basically made himself a prisoner of Canada. His international travelling days are long over.

March 10, 2017 @ 2:44 PM

@Voice of Reason

The laws of the land? First of all I find it very difficult to imagine that you've never broken a traffic law or any law for that matter. Emery sold cannabis seeds via mail order to the United States. Laws vary state to state but in some states it's legal to possess the seeds provided you do not germinate them. You call that a valuable use of taxpayer dollars? To arrest a guy selling seeds from another country over the internet? And maybe the purchaser of the seeds should have been the one arrested? Do you think if I ordered a M4 (gun) from a shop in Montana & it was confiscated at the border the Canadian government would arrest & imprison the gun store owner? Or do you think they'd come knocking on my door? The sale of cannabis seeds is legal in Canada and was when Emery did.

Now for a little education. I used to work as a civilian contractor with the police. One thing I came to understand is that Canadian cannabis is used as currency to purchase hard drives from south of the border. The reason is simple. The United States IRS requires all transactions over $10,000 USD to be flagged and reported. So laundering "Heisenberg" type of money is extremely difficult. Therefore, logically, you use a barter system and the money laundering can take place at the lower levels (mid and street dealers). This insults organized crime syndicates from cross border transactions and the RICO in America (where any associate, guilty or not, goes down if you "associate" with any organized crime).

Legal cannabis makes sense. Or are you encouraging organized crime VoR? If so this alarms me.

March 10, 2017 @ 3:04 PM

And that should have said hard drugs, not hard drives. That's the work of the NSA.

March 10, 2017 @ 3:05 PM

and it "insulates" organized crime, not insults.

March 10, 2017 @ 3:11 PM

The Voice of Reason

I promised Mike I would not get into a pissing match with you. But since you seem to be a walking wikipedia on all subjects. I should remind you that US federal law "trumps" all state laws in the cannabis world.
So before you go on another mindless rant, do us all a favour and just try to research something for a change. I personally would find it refreshing.

Re: warming your Car.
Warming your car up was a requirement when they all had carburetors.
Carburetors for the non Mechanical are mechanisms for mixing gasoline and air. Engines need a pretty specific Air/Fuel ratio to run. ( approximately 14:1 ). when Cold Carburetors do not do a great job of mixing the Air and fuel, in addition a cold engine needs slightly different mix with more fuel. For that carburetors have a thing called a choke. If you are old enough you may remember that cars had manual chokes way back.Later cars with Carbs had automatic chokes. Neither worked great but did the job. if you didn't warm up your car long enough it would hesitate quite a bit while you drove especially in cold weather. My last Motorcycle had Carbs with a manual choke. it ran like crap for the first 10 minutes of a ride if i didn't warm it up first especially before i started tinkering and changing settings and parts.

Modern cars do not have Carbs they have fuel injection , fuel injection in modern cars is computer controlled and can manage the fuel mixture no matter the conditions ( well they are supposed to) by using sensors. This why you can just get in turn the key and go .

Should you though? In my opinion no. Nor should you sit there for 5 minutes warming up the car.

The reason i don't believe in Start up and just drive off is oil. Your engine oil when cold has much less viscosity and won't flow all that well until warm. especially in very cold weather. So i give my car a minute or so to warm up the oil before I drive off. Both in my car and on my Bike.

Do I NEED to. Possibly not but i do it anyway.

I said "old white man-itis". You don't need to be white or old or male to have it. It's basically an affliction where you become an unreasonable, grumpy & narrow minded idiot that lacks the capacity for rational thought. I'm aware of your identity. In a head to head debate, you would not even ring an applause unless it was on "the Debaters", my gut tells me that Steve Patterson would have you wanting to sue the CBC if you ever had the luxury of making it on to that set.

I have nothing to do with SOWNY and haven't for some time. The last communication I had with Iain was to inquire if I could have a public apology posted on SOWNY by someone I'd gone after legally to "cease and desist". Feel free to ask him.

As for Ziggy, I had many conversations with Ziggy. He has strong opinions. He also knows what he's talking about and he recognizes radio is a business not some fantasy land inhabited by a bunch of relics still living in 1974. Zig and I have had some real heated conversations but I respect the guy. I'd definitely drink a beer with him.

Better late than never. Oh well, going through all the CDs. A guy wants them. He is in the States, but there are over 400 CDs. It's going to cost an arm and a leg to ship them. I don't know how I'll do it, but I don't play CDs anymore. I play downloads or music on Spotify. I'm not sure what to do. I thought of sending the CDs COD, but that means he has to pay and then he won't have enough money to pay me. Anyway, so my Habs and Coyotes lost. My Cavs lost another one. Will my Cavs win again ever? Also my Suns lost. My Orioles didn't play, but my Indians and Diamondbacks lost. This sucks.

March 10, 2017 @ 5:01 PM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

You shouldn't have to eat the cost of shipping.

Either the buyer pays that expense, or try and find a local buyer who can pick them up.

March 10, 2017 @ 5:06 PM

My contribution for this week's "Open Mike":

I'm a bit of a graphic design buff - all the better if it has a media connection. Last summer, there was a news story picked up about an Ottawa designer wanting to reprint a retro 1974 CBC graphic standards manual - how that iconic "exploding pizza" should be used in everything from their large field buses to keychains, mugs, advertising, etc.

I provided my E-mail address to be notified if anything happened with it and honestly didn't think too much of it again - figured it wouldn't go anywhere - until I got an E-mail earlier this week that they have a Kickstarter for it at and it is well on its way to hitting a goal.

Certainly one of the more iconic media-related logos in Canada.

(They even notated (in musical notation) the little radio jingle motif of the day - how geeky-cool is that?)

March 10, 2017 @ 5:47 PM

So why not get @VoR on the podcast Mike. Then he can stop hiding behind his pseudonym

I think it will be Ian.

March 10, 2017 @ 9:50 PM

Ian is in his mid-fifties now , and I think CBC will go with someone younger who can be the face of the network for decades, as Mansbridge has been.

March 10, 2017 @ 10:06 PM

Okay. This is it. He will pay, but not until after he gets them. I emailed him saying that it will cost an arm and a leg, but got no response. Anyway, I don't know what to do here. Nobody wants to buy used CDs and there doesn't seem to be any used CD stores around anymore. Anyway, my Nets lost again. My Orioles lost, but my Indians won and my Diamondbacks won.

I cringe when someone invents a complimentary nickname for themselves as TVOR has done. Kevin O'Leary nicknamed himself 'Mr. Wonderful' and it becomes accepted as fact despite his obvious douchebaggery.

March 11, 2017 @ 8:33 PM

Good article by Rob Carrick of the Globe and Mail on the another reason that the Real Estate market is insane.
Low interest rates coupled with the fact that the big banks effectively have any defaults protected by the Canadian Taxpayers through the CMHC, reduces any incentive to properly scrutinize higher risk mortgages. Scary pricing and the fact that people borrowing more (being higher leveraged) are given the best interest rates, adds to the fire.
I hope this doesn't end ugly.

March 11, 2017 @ 9:53 PM

I did find a place that sells CDs on Spadina which is closer than Scarborough or Ajax. Thanks for your suggestions anyway. @Susan @Torontomike I think the best suitable replacement for Peter Mansbridge is Mark Kelley
he would be fantastic!!... he is totally respectable, and would seriously rock to carry on The National.

I don't watch it enough to really say who should be taking over - but I am totally biased for Ian

Yeah, the way it was written I just assumed he had the job - and I did not even google to clarify. (so totally on me too haha)

It would be amazing on many levels for him to get it! Wonder when they'll announce it? A quick google says Peter Mansbridge retires next summer so not long now until that happens.

March 13, 2017 @ 11:03 AM

I'm sure Mark Kelley is in the race, but I still think David Common will get the prize due to his variety of journalistic experience including as a reporter, show host, radio commentator ,foreign correspondant and being in the right age range.
