Scruff on the Q morning zoo so many good laughs plus was good to hear him back again for a couple of other stints at Q107.

dale (Bolton)

1 of my favorite DJ's of all time. That's when Q107 was the Mighty Q.

December 18, 2016 @ 3:24 PM

Very sad. I'll never forget breakfast on the Mayflower.

One of the original originals. RIP.

December 18, 2016 @ 3:37 PM

Scruff is the first radio guy to make an impression on me. Scruff and Geets made me a Q107 fan. I seem to recall Scruff doing some time at Htz-FM as well, somewhere between his Toronto stints at Q and MOJO. RIP, Scruffer.

December 18, 2016 @ 3:50 PM

ohhhh shit no! scruff was maybe the first dj I was really into. he made me laugh so many mornings. RIP scruff!

His "Guess The Meat That I'm Beating" radio bit may be one of the funniest of all time.

Rick C in Oakville

Growing up listening to Q107, Scruff was the choice for myself and all my classmates. I remember his bit of getting locked out of the LP library and only having Led Zeppelins album (or was it just Stairway to Heaven) to play for his whole shift. Had people phoning in and playing music over the phone for him.
I hear Humble and Fred reference his son TJ is also a DJ, no doubt his dad was a hard act to follow.
Any word on what was the cause? I recall an article years ago that he was living in a friends house i think in Port Hope, and was pretty well destitute at that time.

December 18, 2016 @ 5:20 PM

Awww, Scruffy ... You were a hoot.

You won the Pie Fight.

December 18, 2016 @ 5:30 PM

RIP Scruff.

I first discovered 97.7 HTZ FM in St Catharines when he was turfed from Q107 and read that's where he wound up.

Having Jeff as a roomie in London during the 70s was kind of like hanging out with the Stones road crew. Stay hilarious my friend.

Sad to hear of Jeff's passing. I grew up in Winnipeg listening to him on 58-CKY. His "Weirdman" show on Saturday nights was absolutely stellar!! Thanks for the memories (and the music) Jeff. R.I.P.

A Great Radio Legend.

THE biggest radio legend this country has ever seen/heard.

Scruff Connors.

The original shock jock.
The man we grew up smiling with.
The man who gave EVERYTHING of himself to make us laugh.

He inspired us all.
We could never keep up with him.
We could never top him.
We could never stop him.

Most importantly....He loved everything harder than he should have.

Thank you for your lessons and laughs Scuff.
Without you....I would not be who and what I am.

this cant be topped...
Stu Gatz sends: Scruff's "Guess The Meat That I'm Beating" radio bit may be one of the funniest of all time.

Yes true, couldn't be topped, but that was until he beat somebody who really has meat (Maple Leaf Foods) to the tune of $16,000 in a listeriosis class action settlement in '08....reporting he had eaten from the poisonous lot-numbered package he got his hands on, and which he just still happened to have some remaining meat in his half-empty fridge. And that worked very well for the gullible CBC crew that dropped by....check out this report, and pick up Scruffer at 1.00 mark * Maple Leaf listeria outbreak, Doug Powell, CBC National New *
Fully recovering from this dangerous meat-eating....he did eat it, didnt he?...hmmm, not so sure...just ask his cat. RIP great clown and generous person. some great MOJO times together... jimmy c.

one more from the master,, Hello Dildo..

i had alot of time during mojo and after we all got canned '04 to hear his tales,...and id test him sometimes to repeat parts of the stories to ensure he wasnt pulling my leg....his memories were identical favorite.....the time he got the Philadelphia morning jock slot, leaving the slaights and Q (he was hired on the word of Triumph bandmembers who were touring there at time) was a tough 6 months for him..couldnt move the needle...then laying on late friday night couch watching Letterman and his guest..Howard Stern, who climbed up on Letterman's desk and starting rhyming off the cities about to join his network (pre-yet to be invented satellite)..'David, its huge..Detroit, Dallas, Miami..Letterman jumped in Howard!! Howard!! get off my desk!!!....Stern continued,,'Chicago, Kansas City, Philadlephia....'...Scruff heard Philly, calls PD right away...PD tells him,,,scruff, was gonna tell ya Monday,,,were bringing in Stern. --Hello Gary!!! ...... and what was that favorite line of his when a guy would be in trouble with his girl...'she gave him hot tongue and cold shoulder'!!! ..may the stories pour forward..

December 18, 2016 @ 9:55 PM

Spent my "formative teen years" listening to "Scruffer in the morning"on the 'Q.

Much as others, the Scruffer was the first real "morning man" I ever listened to when growing up in Toronto. At the time, I just knew he was one funny guy but looking back now I realize he wasn't only funny but also a brilliant and innovative artist who was just a little crazy (in a good way!) as well lol.

I've missed "Stuff By Scuff" and all the "Scruffco" products since he disappeared from the morning airwaves. Now he's gone things have gotten even sadder. RIP Sruffer .......

My friend Stan & I interviewed Scruff on March 6 1986 when Scruff did morning radio in Philadelphia. I have a lot of his crazy calls uploaded to my computer from cassette tapes. I still listen to them frequently , After I moved from Philadelphia Stan used to send me tapes of his shows (Its really too bad we did not have today's technology back then.) I would never miss a show.) I wish we could find a place to post some of his favorite bits from all of his fans,

December 19, 2016 @ 6:30 AM

RIP. I remember him. After Pete Griffin left CHUM FM, I switched to Scruff and he was really funny. Now I remember he sent me a T-shirt and a taped audio autograph. I think I wore the T-shirt out, but don't know what happened to the tape.

December 19, 2016 @ 6:55 AM

Just a small correction. Scruff was not the champ that skit was by his replacement I believe was named Brother Jake. Scruff had many a good ones of his own.

Scruff was my next door neighbour in 1988 in st. Catharines. What a character! When he did the stint, "New Kids on the Block" and had all the highschool kids come down to the radio station during the school day to supposedly meet the band, it was my three month old baby and my cousin's infant baby that drove up in the limo and pranked the city. Boy were people angry that day.

What a shock!! That is too bad; I listened to him in the early 80's religiously. I will always remember the line about the morning show on Chum FM back in the day: Is Roger Dickin' Marilyn?! lol I also met him once in Mississauga and he was very personable and funny, of course. He will be missed by everyone who knew of him...RIP Scruff

December 19, 2016 @ 6:03 PM

Mike in the North

I remember my dad telling me about this great morning show he would listen to on his way to work, on this radio station in TO called Q107. I was eleven, just starting to play drums, getting into RnR in a big way, and I was lucky enough to find out about Scruff and Gene in the mornings. The wake up calls, Chicken Man, the 'Scruff Ruff', the general madness that was clever and incisive at the same time, these things fuelled my mornings for several years, actually until I left home at 16.

I can't believe he's gone so soon. 2016 has truly sucked.

Gone too early and he sure had his fans in this city.

I gravitated more towards CFNY and WZIR and then WUWU FM out of Buffalo during the original Scruff era at Q but I would tune in every now and then. I have a little XMAS tune that he did posted to my web site. Use the search function at let the universe answer or click on my name and type in "Q107 & CFNY XMAS 1982" and you should get to the post. May have to hit the continue reading to access the full post. Anyway the XMAS ditty sounds perhaps outdated now and Toronto has had 34 years to become more accustomed to our differences.

December 19, 2016 @ 8:11 PM

Javed Jafri

In order to facilitate easier access. I will try this, did not work last time but here's the link to the Scruff XMAS song. Starts at 2:09 of the clip. Not great quality as it's on one of those "sticky" tapes that were not uncommon during the 80's:

Great comments regarding Scruff. I know his son is reading and finding strength in your kind words.

Regarding Chickenman, it was an old 60s serial out of the US that Q107 would play. I loved it, too. Here's one episode:

Regarding The Champ, that was definitely Brother Jake Edwards. Here's something I wrote about The Champ back in 2003.

Here's an episode:

"Beat the Baloney" was pure Scruff.

Jeff and I worked at CFSL in Weyburn Saskatchewan as DJs in 1969 and he was my best man in 1970 in Winnipeg. Over the years I had lost track of him until I saw this post about his passing. He was a wild man from the beginning and left too soon.

Scruff and I shared lockers in Junior High and High School in Winnipeg in the 60's. As funny as he was on radio, in class you laughed so hard at his antics your stomach hurt. I listened to his first professional radio broadcast around 1968 with some of his theater and broadcasting friends from school. We stayed good friends throughout his career and he also became a solid family friend. Whenever he phoned he would imitate our principle at Junior High School so I would know who was calling, and every time it was funny... right into the 2000's. My family and I will miss him and his genius.
