I run Google Adsense ads on this site. Click one once in a while!

One ad is apparently messing with Cheryl's speech recognition software, so I'm trying to find out which one so I can suppress it. Until I fix this, Cheryl will not be commenting.

Just know I'm on the case and eager to get Cheryl back!

Since this is the last Open Mike before the election, how about some predictions.

I predict Clinton wins by a whisker.

November 4, 2016 @ 9:16 AM

NO!!!!!! This blog needs Cheryl. Glad you are working on it.
That sucks for Cheryl - i bet she can't access alot of nifty sites due to these types of issues.

@Tdotter I think this one is too close to call. As Insane as i think you'd have to be to vote for him Trump seems to have momentum.

Perceived integrity issues are trumping real issues from my perspective.

Going to be weird and scary next week i think.

November 4, 2016 @ 9:25 AM

Clinton in a landslide. Trump gets maybe just cracks 200 Electoral College votes.

I am more excited about my first Raptor game of the season (split a 20 pack and will be going to at least 10 games).

Other things no one but me will care about: I am going to NYC next month and will finally bucket list seeing the Rockefeller Tree all light up. I am ridiculously excited to see that. I also booked a few awesome restaurants. It'll be expensive but worth it.

I've always thought Clinton would win big... I still do. We'll see if I'm right in 4 days.

DeRozan is playing like someone with a chip on his shoulder. I love it! And we should have beat the Cavs...

November 4, 2016 @ 9:30 AM

I disagree with the prevailing opinion. I think Trump will win by a decisive margin. Why?

The polls have been off the whole time. They over-sample democrats, ignore the fact that by all projections more registered Republicans will vote in this election than registered Democracts, ignore that TONS of people will be voting for Trump who have never voted before, and are generally skewed against Trump. There's also the Bradley effect where voters are shy to admit they'll vote for Trump but will on election day (before everyone yells at my Nate Silver said this was a tangible thing), and the fact that the MSM derision of Trump doesn't reflect the population as a whole. Not even close.

The biggest factor, however, that has has convinced me that Trump will win is the snowball effect in the fallout from the FBI scandal. The floodgates are now open. Once people start abandoning ship from Hillary (and even the rigged polls show they have), their family, friends, colleagues, etc. will also start abandoning ship. It snowballs. People are throwing their hands up and saying "I'm tired of this woman, I'm tired of this blatant corruption, I'm voting Trump." This will be the new Brexit.

I am willing to bet good money that Justin Trudeau will be sitting down for a meeting with President Trump shortly after the new year.

November 4, 2016 @ 9:35 AM

@ Mike

He signs a new deal and then plays like he's worth it. What a novel idea!
If he scores over 30 tonight then it will be quite the show. It was close with the Cavs but hell, they can't win them all!

I do not have a crystal ball (shocker!), and am not always right (another shocker!), but I have to trust that sanity will prevail. I don't believe it will be close.

I cannot wait for this election to end. I can't stomach one of the candidates, and I'm tired of him dominating the news.

November 4, 2016 @ 9:46 AM

The Voice of Reason

After all the documentation about the corruption in the Democrat party that has been released, one can think that no honest, open minded person would vote for Hillary at this point.

November 4, 2016 @ 9:59 AM

Ben V

Justin go back to the rock you crawl out from under each time there is an election in play. Your hopes were on Ford and Harper, common sense prevailed in both cases. The same will happen in the US.

No one is more corrupt than the guy who can't read, Mr Trump. Yes I said he can't read, I don't just mean teleprompters. I mean there is credible evidence this guy is actually illiterate. Which makes a lot of sense. Not to mention been dodging taxes and improperly filing taxes, but again go after the woman using a personal server. She's not tough enough to take on ISIS, but she was tough enough to make sure they took out Bin Laden. Oh and then there is the case of him essentially being a paedophile that hasn't received nearly enough air play.

Nothing like false equivalency to put her on the same level as Donald Trump. That's about the only thing the GOP has done well is making it seem like Hillary is no better or worse than trump i. Well that and stirring up all the racists that had been lingering in the shadows.

November 4, 2016 @ 10:01 AM

I put money (rather lunch) on Clinton winning, beer is included if the Dem win the house as well.
I was pretty confident before last week, as it gets closer not so confident..but I still think Clinton win by a small margin..why..I happen to agree with what one poster said here:

"Hillary is a liar" - coming from a textbook pathological liar who cannot separate truth from fiction
"Hillary is nasty" - unlike who, "fair-minded, likeable Donald"?
"Hillary is entitled" - from a trust-fund millionaire who hasn't paid taxes in two decades
"hillary is corrupt" - from someone who illegally took money from his own, illegal charity to pay personal expenses, court fines, and for huge canvas paintings of himself

she is all of those things, but still the better candidate then that idiot (and idiot is being polite)

November 4, 2016 @ 10:07 AM

Ben V

@Mrmojorisinca: At least you didn't claim the list as your own, like another person who comments here has done.

The only issue I have with your post is again false equivalency. Politico did a fact check on the candidates, Hillary score a 27% of the time stating something that was slightly untrue to false. She fared better than Bernie Sanders did. Trump on the other hand was close to 70% of the time he said an outright lie or half truth. I wasn't the first to point this out, I'm taking an exceprt from Bill Maher show last Friday. In that regard they aren't even on the same level. If you look at the life Hillary has lead I don't know if you can actually call her entitled. She might come off cold, but being nasty is something left to the guy can't read and barks out order to his assistants on what he wants tweeted.

There is no real comparison of the two and even bringing them on the same level demeans her position as a human being.

November 4, 2016 @ 10:30 AM

I posted what I posted because I agree with it..and better said then I could have written :)

You shouldn't compare the two..but because they are running for the same position we are forced too. lets hopes we are correct and she does win.
However, I wouldn't be able to say she a good person..she probably takes advantage of the same tax loop wholes Donald does..he is and always will be an idiot and should never even be this close to getting the position..and as I said she is the better of the two..

in a perfect world they would both step away and let their runner ups take over the two parties.

November 4, 2016 @ 10:37 AM

@ VoR

I don't know if you can call all of the e-mail releases evidence of corruption. Some of them have been proven to be false but not all. The Clinton campaign was ruthless with Sanders. That is absolutely true.

But we haven't see the private e-mails of the GOP. We haven't seen the private e-mails of Trump. Why? The Russians aren't hacking him.

When the Russian government favours the same candidate as the KKK then we should really wonder why. Hate on Hillary all you want but these are questions that should be addressed with calling Clinton supporters closed minded.

November 4, 2016 @ 10:45 AM

last week i was visiting with my one sister (rare occasion) and the talk turned to politics. i almost fell off my chair and my eyes fell out of my head to hear that she thinks Trump should win. I actually felt sick to my stomach. This is an intelligent, educated woman. I couldnt even discuss her reasons because i was so flabbergasted.
I happened to mention this to a colleague at work and she said this is one of her fears that there are alot of people out there that will vote for Trump but would not admit it nor advertise it at all.
Though I am no fan of Clinton, she is BY FAR the only candidate worthy of this position. I am predicting she will win but no by a landslide, which the American people should be embarrassed by.

November 4, 2016 @ 10:56 AM

Rick C in Oakville

My wife was in Virginia this week, the dislike of Hillary she heard from colleagues was unnerving.
Well in a few years we will have our own Provincial Election, and will need to see if a corrupt politician makes it back into the Legislature. I wouldn't bet against Kathleen Wynne, and I am not a supporter.

I can't believe the heartlessness of some people. After reading the story of the family that lost their dog(and a companion to the grandfather with Altzheimers), it was found by the Humane Society, and then adopted out. The original family asked if the adopting family would give the dog back, and they said no. WTF, This only happened over a 2 week period, so not years in which the dog was gone. Took a good Samaritan and his offer of $5000 to the adopting family to get it back.
They could have used this as a good life lesson for their kids, explaining someone needed this dog more than us, and the only right thing to do is give it back.

November 4, 2016 @ 11:19 AM

Rob J

I hope Cheryl is able to rejoin the TM universe again soon. I'd rather read one of her sports-posts than literally anything US-election related on here. The evidence of brainwashing is enormous as we get to read the same tired talking-points week after week, expressed as if they were original thoughts. Garbage.

November 4, 2016 @ 11:39 AM

Ben V

The biggest issue in this election is facts vs feelings. People don't want to believe the US is doing well, despite the fact that Obama has done a tremendous job lowering the unemployment rate. People feel things are bad so they want to hear things that validate those feelings. ISIS is going to come and take over the US, which is impossible, but they fear it and think it's a possibility so they believe it. Hillary is going to get rid of guns, which isn't true, but people are worried about that so they believe it when someone says it. Like any other country that has leaned in an voted in a dictator, a demagogue, a racist or an extreme government left or right, they want people or things to blame. They feel like the current system is out to get them so lets blow it all up and watch the world burn. It's why they are so willing to follow breibart news and conspiracy theories. Why MEMES on Facebook are taken as fact.

The people who support trump are the same types that voted Ford. We want an outsider to run things. We want someone who shoots from the hip. Who cares if he lies he's not a typical politician let him do his thing.

November 4, 2016 @ 12:04 PM

Refuse to believe

I refuse to believe that collectively America is dense, ignorant, mean-spirited enough to vote in such a boorish, obnoxious, ill informed cretin.

In a very short while, we'll be saying Madame President.

November 4, 2016 @ 12:05 PM

I can't wait for the election to be over so people can stop talking about it. Its been the same story for about a year now. really nothing has changed but CNN et al need something to talk about

November 4, 2016 @ 12:23 PM

I actually do have a crystal ball. It's a great talking piece with clients in meetings (I am an independent financial advisor). No prediction to make. I intensely dislike both candidates running to be the president of the United States of America. I found one prediction from an American friend, who is an independent. His prediction is not so much who will win on Tuesday, but what will happen afterwards: Trump will get shot by some raving lunatic and the press will blame (lack of) gun control; Clinton, unless given a universal pardon by Obama for anything she may have done in her life, will be either charged and arrested or resign under the threat of impeachment.

Justin's points above are all valid; I have seen them made in a number of publications. To his points, I will add the following, from a Wall Street perspective, first with a couple of lines from it, in case you are not inclined to read it:

“Imagine a country where the greatest, most powerful newsroom in the free world was viewed not as a voice that speaks to all but as one that has taken sides,” she said, before grimly asking, “Or has that already happened?”

“This election has exposed as never before that there is indeed a media elite, bound together by class and geography, that is utterly clueless about its own biases and filters,” freelance investigative reporter Kenneth Silverstein wrote this week in the Observer.

Silverstein had some unkind words for Trump, describing him as an “addled, reckless, dangerous billionaire.” He added, however, that Trump’s success “may be a sad reflection of the complete breakdown of our political system, but it doesn’t make Trump’s appeal to a significant chunk of the electorate illegitimate.”

This last point is a huge one. There are many examples, not just in the U.S., but in Canadian media, to deem illegitimate any form of divergent opinion on matters political, particularly those that are not Liberal (in the North American definition, as opposed to the global definition). Witness the parallels between the deification of Canada's current prime minister versus the vilification of his predecessor.

This article is more of a media article than an election/presidential selection one: | Opinion: Blatant bias against Trump may hasten the end of mainstream media
The exact same scenario is playing out in Canada's media.

November 4, 2016 @ 12:28 PM

Ben V

@ Douglas: Your second last paragraph couldnt be more wrong. How many Canadian papers backed Harper in the last 3 elections. Especially the 2 before Trudeau was elected. Yeah the Toronto Star is left leaning, but that cant be said about the rest.

November 4, 2016 @ 12:56 PM

Could you please explain the media bias to me?

It is always called bias when reporters report things. In Canada there are two major newspapers that criticize the current government on a daily basis. The Toronto Star is left leaning. The National Post is right leaning. But when the Post offers a legitimate critique of a conservative candidate or elected official they are deemed part of the media bias. It doesn't make any sense.
The Toronto Star is often accused of being in the tank for the Liberals. Yet they have exposed several scandals involving the Ontario Liberals. Yes they endorsed a weak Ontario Liberal government in the last election. But the PC candidate sabotaged himself. It wasn't bias in reporting, it was just reporting.

One final point, if the media bias was true and they are all actively working against any right sided agenda, why did we have a Conservative majority prior to Trudeau's victory, a Republican controlled Senate, a Republican controlled Congress and a current Liberal Premier with an approval rating in the toilet?

The above statements are true. If the media was biased then the public wouldn't know any of it.

November 4, 2016 @ 1:44 PM

The Globe recent editorial titled: "Dear America, please don't vote for Trump"

That says it all about Canada's supposed conservative newspaper.

November 4, 2016 @ 2:47 PM

Ben V

@ Argie: A Canadian conservative is nothing like an american one. That's an insult to Canadian conservatives unless it's harper and stockwell day.

Nice to see so many of my personal faves in the top 10.

I love The Wire and Sopranos and Simpsons and Seinfeld. Heck, I also loved Mad Men and dug Breaking Bad. Solid stuff.

November 4, 2016 @ 3:23 PM

I'm far from first, but there were issues. The ads were doing something to my speech software. My friend was here. He was helping me with some software for work I must learn by Monday. It's easy to use, thank goodness, I think I am all set for Monday, but the thing is that the training even though it was recorded had to be accessed by a mouse. Anyway, while he was here, he took care of the ads. They were slowing my computer down and really messing up my speech software. Anyway, how about those Cavs. Another win. They are 5 and 0. That's great and they will be 6 and 0 after tomorrow night. I just know. My Coyotes won as well last night. That was great. They are coming along and my Habs are really good only with one overtime loss.

November 4, 2016 @ 3:42 PM

I personally find both candidates a terrible choice and I tell my US friends to look at 3rd party candidates. Between an alleged criminal with a very shady foundation and another alleged criminal that's a crazy and dirty old man I don't envy any American voter come Tuesday and having to make that choice.

However, as silly as it sounds I sorta would like to see Trump get an early lead on Tuesday, or even come close to winning, just to watch all the talking heads on CNN and other mainstream media stations start having on-air meltdowns over the sheer idea of a Trump presidency.

That said, I do find the whole US media surrounding this election to be very troubling especially with how they are dealing with the email issue. I mean, if the issue was flipped and it was Trump with the wikileaked emails on his shady dealings and what not would the US media be as hands off or dismissive as they are with the Hilary stuff? For some reason I doubt it and it really is shameful that a fair and unbiased media appears to be as biased as they are right now.

November 4, 2016 @ 4:15 PM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

Plenty of conservative US newspapers have decided not to endorse Donald Trump.

The Arizona Republic, for example. They endorsed every Republican candidate until now. This time, they endorsed Clinton.

Same with The Dallas Morning News and Cincinnati Enquirer and New Hampshire Union Leader. Heck, even the Detroit News, which has endorsed every Republican candidate since it was founded in the 1800s, refused to endorse Trump.

November 4, 2016 @ 4:31 PM

?CNN bias?

If CNN is so left wing biased, why do we have to suffer through so many deplorable Trump surrogates?

Many of the Trump surrogates are truly deplorable people:
Boris Epshteyn
Katrina Pierson
Cory Lewandowski
Scottie Nell Hughes
Betsy McCaughey
Dr. Gina Loudon
Michael Cohen
Sheriff David Clarke
Pastor Darrell Scott
Pastor Mark Burns

A bit less deplorable are:
Jeffrey Lord
Kayleigh McEnany
Paris Dennard

The only Trump surrogates i can somewhat stand are:
André Bauer
John Phillips

Can't wait to see Cheryl's comment re: Habs tonight. 10-0 to 1 of worst teams in NHL.
My sisters nephew Josh Anderson scored 2 of CBJ 10 goals tonight.

Clinton or Trump - a punch in the face or a kick in the nuts! My concern is that this election will impact somehow all other countries worldwide going forward.

November 4, 2016 @ 10:33 PM

That Habs game was just horrible, absolutely horrible. Do I have to talk about it. Now they lose. I didn't know they were going to be this bad, but they were. Also my Coyotes lost. Hockey was not good at all last night. Basketball was a bit better. My Suns did win by a point so they won their second. My Nets lost another one though. They have to start winning some time. My Habs will win tonight though and Cavs will win tonight as well over the Sixers. Habs will beat the Flyers tonight so both Philadelphia teams will lose.

November 5, 2016 @ 5:48 AM

The Leafs game tonight had to be 1 of the best entertaining games of last 3-4 years.
A very young team but playing lately as vets. Babs has them on a mission.
2 more years will be competing for Lord Stanley.

November 5, 2016 @ 11:15 PM

Well, Habs won again. They're back to winning. Friday night's game was a fluke loss. It won't happen again. I just know it won't. Cavs won as well last night although they almost lost it. That was very very close, but they won by a measly point and so they won and are 6 and 0. let's make it 7 and 0 on Tuesday against Atlanta. Football day today. My Ravens need to win. I know that. I need lots of wins for my pool which I am not winning. Anyway, it's about time my Ravens win and will the Browns ever win a game. They are playing the Cowboys who are also in my pool, but would really like to see the Browns win. They need wins as well.

Well, football was okay. My Ravens finally won a game so that's a great thing. Browns didn't win. Cowboys are in my pool though, but so are the Browns. Anyway, Lions won which is a good thing and Chiefs won. Eagles lost. Anyway, my Cardinals didn't play. My Suns lost another one last night, but one day they will start winning. I just know.

Not a whole lot happened in sports last night, but Seahawks won which is good for my pool. Only if I was doing better. Anyway, my Habs are playing at home against Boston. Should be a good one. It always is. Habs win it though, of course. Also some basketball tonight with Hawks at Cavs. Cavs will win that of course, make it 7 in a row. It will be so good not to hear about this fricken election anymore. It lasted long enough.
