Tonight! College Street Bar in Toronto!

Welcome back Mike! Looks like your trip out east was fun. I had a similar one with the wife back in '99.

Seems to me that Todd Shapiro's show on SiriusXM is falling apart. He announced that his co-hosts were "leaving to move on to bigger and better Things" but the departure was so sudden and sounded strange

The show is terrible. Todd's new schtick is that he isn't funny or a comedian. The show is filled with sponsor interviews. They had a window salesman on for 40 mins the other day.

The Terry Fox Run is a great cause. Good for you, Mike.

This has been a great summer. So many warm, sunny days.

Life is good.

This may sound odd to everyone else however today I was flipping through my channel guide (I'm with Bell for my TV) and my listings has M3, formally MuchMoreMusic, no longer being listed as "GUSTO".

Did the channel quietly come to an end and was not announced?

Happy Friday!

Annoyed by a number of things this week but no time to expand at the moment!

What i'm NOT annoyed by is the new Bike. loving it more daily. Just wish i had time for a really long ride!

Well, not a big baseball night last night. Oh well, hope I get lots of wins tonight. Kean starts curling in less than an hour. Kean is going to win this spiel and lots of other spiels. My trainer is only in a couple spiels this year. Anyway, I will donate to your Terry Fox run hoping I can do it with the web site though, but I should have it done in the next few days anyway.

September 2, 2016 @ 10:39 AM

Does Todd Shapiro have sponsors? He'll have a show so long as he has paying sponsors.

I tried his show and didn't care for it. I'm sorry to hear it's only gotten worse.

September 2, 2016 @ 10:41 AM

I'm not sure if I'm reading your question right, but M3/Muchmoremusic was Bell-owned. Bell bought the rights to GUSTO earlier this year and on September 1 discontinued M3 and replaced it with GUSTO.

Fellow Torontonians,

With the significant increase in attendance at Blue Jay games this year, and not to mention the increase in TV ratings of Blue Jay games, it is time we fans show the world we can be passionate yet reasonable fans. And we can start by eliminating the cancer that shows up every game.

It is the "Wave".

The "Wave" had a place and a time - it was the '80's. But that time has long since past. We have grown up as fans, and no longer need to stand up for no particular reason in the middle of the action on the field, interfering with the enjoyment of the game by those behind us. We no longer need to stand up and risk spilling the lager/ale in our hands on the person in front of us, for no particular reason. We need to show the world what a mature city we are and can be. We need to stop the "Wave".

So next time you're at a Blue Jay game (or any sporting event for that matter), and some yutz in your section tries to get everyone to do the "Wave", try to remember the wise words of Nancy Reagan, and just say "No"!

September 2, 2016 @ 11:00 AM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

I personally abstain from anti-wave sentiments because, to be honest, I'm not anti-wave. There are tense moments in a game when you don't want to be distracted by the wave, but for most of the game it's just fun for fans. My 12-year old, for example, loves the wave.

Maybe we just need an alert system in the dome when the wave is inappropriate. Two on, one out and down by a couple in the bottom of the eighth, for example.

But let's not ban the wave for the whole game.

Things about Tim Hortons:

1. Their wifi absolutely sucks nuts

2. I get stabby when I see people constantly walk in, see the omnipresent gigantic queue and proceed to loudly exclaim "woh!!! look at that lineup!". Are you really that fucking new?

3. Servers - do not call me to your cash to take my order and then start doing something else for the 5 seconds it takes me to arrive at your cash, and then ignore me when I do in fact arrive . Hail me only when you have your shit together.

4. Customers - For the love of Jeebus, know what you want before you arrive at the cash.

5. Customers - Stay off the damn phone while placing an order.

6. Hobos - I will never, ever give you money when you're panhandling in or just outside a store. Unfortunately for you, I have had several bad experiences with hobos and I do paint you all with the same massively wide brush. I will neither acknowledge you or feel guilty when you say "have a nice day". In fact, consider yourself lucky that I ignore you. I really want to glare at you menacingly and tell you to blow it out your ass.

That is all. Proceed with your long weekend.

Actually I cannot wait till the 3 rd week of September.
The Blue Jays right smack dab in a pennant or wild card race ( a team owned by you know who)
AND The World Money Maker Of Hockey
Same network airing both sports.Puck-Mouths trying to hype up hockey and Ball-Mouths pushing baseball . It is going to be a comedy mess.
The Puck-Heads trying to make a mid-week game of Team North America vs The North York No Frills be more interesting than the Blue Jays either leading or 1 game back in the east.
I must admit I will be catching a bit of Team Europe vs The Food Basic Farmer's.

September 2, 2016 @ 11:30 AM

Ryan G

@Derrick - I completely agree with you. It makes our fans seem uneducated and oblivious to what's actually going on. It re inforces the idea that our fans are just bandwagoner's there for the spectacle. Usually the wave is started by some over-lubricated college kid who wants to be some kind of hero cheerleader.

Similarly, I find that Toronto fans don't get loud at the appropriate times - they need the tension to be spoon fed to them, only getting noisy when it's 2 outs & 2 strikes against the (losing) opposing team in the top of the 9th. I've got a flex pack and was at several games so far this season. In many cases I'd start clapping or making noise around key situations (with the hope that others might chime in and do the same), yet people around me looked at me like I was an obnoxious hooligan.

Toronto fans, take a cue from Fenway.

September 2, 2016 @ 11:32 AM

Do you see or is it okay to do the "Wave" at the ACC when the Leafs/Raptors are in the middle of play? Do you see people performing the "Wave" at a U2 concert at the Dome? No, because the action for which people paid money to witness is taking place on the field of play or the stage. So if it's wrong to do the wave then, why is okay to do the wave when a Blue Jay pitcher is getting ready to pitch, or a Blue Jay batter is getting ready to hit, or there is 2 on with 1 out in the fifth inning?

And just because your 14 year old daughter likes it doesn't mean it's okay. My son likes to pee on trees with his pants around his ankles. That doesn't mean it's okay. His pants should not be around his ankles.

An if you, in attendance at a ball game, need a warning system to tell when it's not okay do the "Wave" (which is never), then you should probably watch the game at home. You can do the "Wave" all you want there and not bother another soul.

September 2, 2016 @ 11:55 AM

@Ryan G - They do the wave at Fenway, too.

Personally, I loathe the wave. It seems to me it's typically done by fans who are bored. People doing the wave aren't paying attention to the game -- they're watching the wave go around. And they're distracting those of us who are watching the game because we have to miss the action as the wave goes past our seats.

The wave would be perfectly fine if it happened between innings. I don't like it as the game is going on.

September 2, 2016 @ 12:24 PM

M3 = Gusto - I'm genuinely curious what was M3 playing for all these years? I'm assuming it wasn't music. I remember when M3 came out when I was young and it felt like a crappier version of MuchMusic so I never paid attention

The wave - Meh I don't care. If the wave comes around i'll still do it. If baseball players can ignore heckling and the awful things fans yell about their mothers and wives, standing up shouldn't distract them

Todd Shapiro - I'm really curious as to how the Sirius model works. I'm assuming for bottom of the dial hosts they just give him a station # and he pays for his own costs and earns revenue based on his sponsors. For somebody like Howard Stern I'm assuming he pulls a salary + ratings bonuses

September 2, 2016 @ 12:30 PM

Todd was never especially funny to begin with. It's a plus for him being on satellite as there is no ratings accountability. Probably the same reason Arlene Bynon is still on that channel.

September 2, 2016 @ 12:36 PM

Ryan G

@Barry - thanks. well I figured they might do the wave at Fenway too (unfortunately) but I was mainly referring to how those fans don't need it to be the bottom of the 9th to get loud. They respond in key situations regardless of the inning or who's up to bat...orrrr maybe they just amp up the crowd volume during the broadcasts, but I think it's the former.

September 2, 2016 @ 1:13 PM

September 2, 2016 @ 2:10 PM

Todd has said on air many times, that Sirius doesn't pay him. Instead he does 45 minute "interviews" with his sponsors.
I really enjoyed his co host, Jay Brody, but I think they just canned him.

I just think baseball is a slower, different animal. If fans want to do the wave during the top of the third inning, let 'em do it. They're just having fun at the ballpark.

Jay and Roddy being let go from the Todd Shapiro show was simple.

Todd is the most insecure dude on the planet. He's aging, losing his hair, he isn't funny and he is trying to live at 43 the way he did at 33. The difference now is its 10 years later and he has no skills now that Spotify and iTunes are taking over the medium he holds so dear, the radio. Jay and Roddy are incredibly talented and Todd was afraid and even paranoid that they were going to take over. When you realize you're the dumbest person in the room, people do irrational things.

He is trying to make the kind of money he made on the edge. Sorry Todd, radio stations can't pay that much anymore because they don't make as much money as they used to. They don't make as much money in advertising because brands and retailers are using new mediums that are cheaper and way more effective.

His half hour of sponsor reads during his show are unbelievably bad. I know for absolute certain he has zero way of showing return on investment to his sponsors. This whole thing is a ticking time bomb.

Todd should probably enroll at the DeVry institute and start over.

On the bright side now Jay and Roddy are free to do their own show which will be 100x better than anything Shapiro will ever be a part of.

Todd Shapiro has the exact same model Humble and Fred have. He sells his own advertising based on having a live show on Canada Laughs on SiriusXM. SiriusXM doesn't pay him (the way they pay Howard Stern, for example), but he leverages that exposure to recruit paying sponsors like Pizza Pizza.

I don't know Todd well, although we did hang for a bit when he was starting his podcast / SiriusXM show. I built his first website and set him up with the same back-end process H+F utilize.

I do know he's married now with a one year old kid. I'm sure he's got different priorities now than he did ten years ago.

This is the first I'm hearing about Jay and Roddy leaving the show. I appeared on Shapiro's show a few times and really liked both Jay and Roddy. I still get the odd email from Jay tipping me off to this and that. He's a fan of my podcast.

I'll see if I can find out what the heck is happening over there.

September 2, 2016 @ 3:31 PM

I just chatted with Jay Brody. He says he and Roddy Colmer decided to leave the Todd Shapiro show to pursue other opportunities.

5 weeks ago, they launched a Sunday Show on Sirius XM on Canada Laughs, from 12-4 called Laugh League.

Two weeks ago they launched a Podcast called The Dumb Show.

This is what he tells me.

September 2, 2016 @ 3:39 PM

Toronto Listener

Hey Mike,

Totally agree with you. When you are married with a one year old priorities definitely change.

However, the show sounds like there was zero prep and content creation put into it. If I was him, I'd be working a lot harder to create a quality show. Instead he chases sponsors for personal gain and using people when he needs them and then tossing them aside.

There are right ways and wrong ways to be successful in entertainment. He is 100% doing all the wrong things.

September 2, 2016 @ 3:44 PM

Todd Shapiro is awful radio. Just sayin'.

September 2, 2016 @ 4:03 PM

NOTICE: Today the Blue Jays added a bunch of players to their September call ups.
One of them was NOT Chris Colabello.I guess the Jays standing behind him when he was suspended for 80 games do to a drug test was a farce.
Everyone, don't even start about he was not doing well in AAA ..They brought up at least 3 bodies as filler before him.
I liked Chris last year and made an impact, sadly his MLB career is over forever !!
Hint: When your back is to the wall, just tell the truth.
Shapero and his puppet boy the so called GM.. are real strait the truth guys.

September 2, 2016 @ 4:40 PM

Not a fan of Shapiro show with or without sidekicks. He was never funny, nor had he shown any real skill as a host before Sirius gave him a prime slot to waste. If I were a wagering man, I would bet that Humble and Fred earn a little bit of money from Sirius on top of their sponsorship revenue.

September 2, 2016 @ 5:13 PM

Just guessing, but Maddog as the CFRB live Drive co-host after the long weekend?

September 2, 2016 @ 5:15 PM

Shapiro's whole persona is just annoying. He's like a little kid in a grown man's body and he obviously thinks quite highly of himself. Wouldn't wish bad on the guy but I've been completely indifferent about his role in the entertainment industry since he somehow garnered success with Blundell.

September 2, 2016 @ 6:21 PM

Bryan Dole

@Cal......your guess at 5:15 pm is spot on.
Maddog will become the new co-host of The Live Drive. He's filled in quite a few times for Ryan over the summer and did quite a good job.
The whole "The Live Drive with Ryan Doyle and XXX" was getting kinda tired, good on Bell for filling the void with someone as good as Jay.
They work well together.

September 2, 2016 @ 6:46 PM

Thoughts on a long weekend Friday:

Clinton's emails divulged today & Juliani wears a baseball cap talking in Mexico promoting Trump & his love of the Mexican people. Later same day Trump totally changes his comments about Mexico & they have to build the wall at the border. U.S. in for?? after electing a Pres.

World Cup of Hockey - so many tickets still available (even for Cda games) that prices may change in the next few days. Flex pack?. All of a SUDDEN players from all teams are reneging on playing due to injuries. at least 5-6 in last 2-3 days. An exhibition of Hockey in Sept. A money grab for NHL & NHLPA.

I'm worried about the Jays - the next 3 series have to be won. Call ups today. Where is Chris Collabello, not even considered? Last year he was very good in playoffs & then PED use & suspended for 80 games. Come clean Chris & you may have another chance in MLB.

Leafs - Anderrson hurt in game yesterday, now what Enroth starts & Sparks as backup.

My brother David passed away 1 year ago today. RIP Brother.

Have a great long weekend & donate to Mike's Terry Fox Run.

September 2, 2016 @ 6:59 PM

The love for Colabello and distrust of Shapiro is pretty misguided. Colabello needed to prove he can still play, and a slash of .186/.302/.562 at AAA is not what you call up in a pennant race. The Jays stuck by him by not waiving him.

How about those Orioles. Great win 8 to 0. Dylan Bundy pitched a great game. Mark Trumbo hits homer number 41. He is still on the top of the homers list. Also Pedro Alvarez, chris Davis and Manny Machado homered. My Diamondbacks lost though again. That's not a good thing. A.J. Pollock homered, but a loss. Indians won again. That's great. Indians will win the division. Carlos Carrasco won another one. Good that he is back on track. Team Kean is 2 and 1 now. They won the first, lost the second and won the third. They have another game at 11:00 so they better win that one. I don't know why fricken rogers sends me bills. I don't owe them anything. I don't know why I keep getting bills, but I called them and they put me on hold for a long time and then I finally got someone who told me that I would get unsubscribed from getting paper bills. Those bills are junk mail and I don't need junk mail. Rogers don't know what they're doing. I would never pay rogers anything directly.

September 3, 2016 @ 5:59 AM

Going into Toronto for Fan Expo, looking forward to it. Have never been, am not paying extraordinary funds for quickies with famous stars (although hoping to catch a glimpse of the Firefly crew, and of course, William Shatner). My 15 year old is excited to sit and watch the experts play CS Go.

Saw Prophets of Rage at the Molson Amphitheatre the other day, great show. Was one of the oldies in the crowd. Nice to see TO can still rock, and great guest appearance by Dave Grohl! One day, will catch the Foos too.

September 3, 2016 @ 2:16 PM

Why should someone not bring up that Colabello has been brutal at AAA? It's an important fact. Why on earth would a team bring up a guy who can's seem to hit at all? Just to be nice? They're in a pennant race. At best, he would sit on the bench. You don't throw a guy like that into the lineup because you're hoping he'll figure something out against big league pitching that he couldn't figure out against minor league pitching. This isn't little league. You don't play everyone who signs up.

Of all the reasons to hate on Shapiro, this is among the worst.

Colabello's career isn't over because of Shapiro. Shapiro didn't put him on PEDs.

September 3, 2016 @ 3:26 PM

Can u believe Q107 actually playing Duran Duran, Sheryl Crow & to top it all off The Barenaked Ladies. That was the last straw.

Reception aint that great but Y108 Hamilton is the real ROCK Station now & they don't repeat songs that much.

That Son of a Bitch song by Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats is really catchy.

Q107s playlist has changed dramatically the last few weeks.

Rick Springfield, Tommy Tutone, Modern English, Prince, INXS, Tears for Fears, Pablo Cruise & Jimmy Buffett.
Seems format has changed to try to lure 30-40 year olds to listening now.
Big time change but still Derringer has got to go. Stale big time.

September 3, 2016 @ 11:02 PM

How about those Orioles. Kevin Gausman pitched a great game. Adam Jones homered. That's wonderful. My Diamondbacks won as well. Jake Lam again. Another home run. Don't get rid of Jake Lam. He's great. How about those Indians. They got another win again. They were losing, but that was only in the first inning. They came back. They got this guy named Coco Crisp. That sounds like some junky cereal, but he is good. I didn't think anyone with a name like Coco Crisp would be that good, but he is. He gets on base, he hustles. Anyway, Indians won. Trevor Bauer settled down and pitched well after the first inning. Jason Kipnis got another home run. Franky Lindor was on base three out of four times. Kean didn't do so well in curling. They should have won the last game, but lost it in the very end so they ended up 2 and 2. That's no good. No playoffs for them. They better win the next spiel and they will. As for donating, I will, but maybe in a couple weeks or one week anyway. I will though.

I used to work at 94.9 when it was CKAR (1980-ish), think it was Grant Broadcasting back then.

Boom 97.3 and Giant FM, 91.7 play some decent long sets.

I gave up on Q107's 150 song playlist a few years back, replaced it with Buffalo's 97 Rock.
Strong signal, it's 96.9.

I only have 3 of 12 FM pre-sets, set: 97.3; 91.7; 96.9.

As far as I'm concerned, Corus, Bell, Rogers, and Newcap have ruined radio, the bingo callers may as well say, "we're all the same, all the time!"

September 4, 2016 @ 6:21 PM

I think the NHL/NHLPA fundraising tournament is more of a back-handed slap directed at the IOC and IIHF. This is just a glorified allstar tournament - Team North America??? Team Europe??? - can't see it having the same passion or intensity of Olympic hockey.

September 4, 2016 @ 6:32 PM

@steve w

What national anthems would be played if Team Europe or North America wins a game?
This tourney is a joke & with 10-12 players succumbing to all of a sudden injuries & rehab?

All this in a middle of a pennant race for BJays who will playing mostly at home during this shenanigan World Cup.

I totally get why the NHL and NHLPA is having this tournament. All those eyeballs on the Olympics tournament and no big payday for owners and players.... makes total sense.

But, and I said as much on episode 190 of my podcast, they messed with the only formula that works. They decided to get cute and lost me.

Having said that, if I'm home an evening Canada is playing, I'm pretty certain I'll tune it. It won't mean as much as Olympic gold, but it's stil fun to watch Canada's best playing for country.

September 4, 2016 @ 7:47 PM

My Orioles lost. I don't want to talk about them. They lost. My Diamondbacks won though. That's great, but they won't make the playoffs. My Indians won again. They almost lost it, but great comeback. They were losing 3 to 0. Then they tied it up 3 to 3. Then top of the ninth, they are losing 5 to 3, but won it in the bottom of the ninth 6 to 5. Lonnie Chisenhall with the game winner. At least my Indians are doing really well just like the Cavs. I used to hate Labour Day because it meant that I would have to go back to boarding school the day after and I really didn't like boarding school, especially in the younger grades.

Well, apparently there was an audio thing, but my speech software couldn't read it so I had my friend read it. For some reason my speech software couldn't read it. I hate capcias so if there is anything you can do, Mike to get rid of them, that would be wonderful. My Orioles won yesterday. Chris Davis hit a home run. Ubaldo Jimenez pitched a surprisingly great game. My Diamondbacks lost though. I don't want to talk about my Indians. They lost again but Mike Napoli hit his 30th homer in the losing cause so maybe he will get back on track. He hasn't hit a homer in a while now.

@Cheryl: I dont think Mike can do anything about the captchas...not his website.

Noticed that Elvis' donation towards TM's goal must still be forthcoming. Nevertheless, my contribution will be both In honour of E conquering the big C as well as in memory of TM's friend Mike K.

Remember though, Elvis had the good cancer.

As of today 8,800 people have been charged texting, tweeting or talking on their social media in the GTA since Jan. 2017.

Give it up too many lives have been lost to this distraction.

WTF give it up as MY LIFE IS NOT WORTH IT or my family members.

How about those Orioles. Another great win. Yovani Gallardo pitched really well and homers were by Chris Davis, a grand slam by Manny Machado and also by Adam Jones. My Diamonbacks lost though and my Indians lost again. Corey Kluber was pitching so I don't know why he lost. He usually wins. Carlos Santana hit another home run in the Indians losing cause. Well, so Mike can't get rid of the capcias. I hate capcias. As for people texting and driving, it's stupid. Why do people do it. Nobody heard of texting years ago. I don't have a cellphone and am not getting one. Why bother. Well, I don't drive either. I can't drive.

Doesn't help dispel the reputation that Maddog is unoriginal and borrows bits, when on his first show he does a 2nd rate version of a long-time Jimmy Kimmel piece.

FF - He's never live on the air anyways, 102's website still has him with Mel and R-the temp.

Biking TO- Mike i love that you advocate for biking this city, biking is great. But here are my beefs with our bikers dressed in tight spandex. Please pass this on to any of your bike-mates.

Beef # 1 - Family bike ride along the lake-shore 1PM on a Sunday while the Airshow is going on. "tour de france" Bikers dodging in and out of traffic. Travelling at 70km's "Yelling on your left" no bell, and pissed if you are in their way. My 8 year old came inches from a head on bike accident with one of these guys. Could have been nasty, my son had enough sense to veer right, his handle bar clipped Mr Tour de France who when flying.
Guys, if you are training for the next Olympics, Sunday at 1pm while an airshow is happening is not the ideal venue. Just saying.

Beef #2 - "Tour de france " riders on the road who MUST, ride 4 abreast taking up a full lane on the road, not signaling turns, not stopping at stop signs. Argh, my rant over.

Does spandex make you go faster? and does it really matter when riding on the city streets? :)

My Orioles and Diamondbacks both lost. My Indians won though, but it was close. Mike Napoli hit number 31. He is becoming another one of my favourites. Well, football starts this weekend. Bills are at my Ravens. Patriots are at my Cardinals. That's two wins. Remember my pool. Here are my teams again, Ravens and Browns, Cardinals and Seahawks, Titans and Colts, Panthers and Saints, Chiefs and Chargers, Packers and Lions, Eagles and Cowboys, Jets and Dolphins. I need wins by all my football teams. Also Kean plays again this weekend. This time Kean will win. Go Kean.

How about those Orioles. Another great win. That's awesome and homers by Chris Davis, Manny Machado and two by Matt Wieters. Hope another win today. My Diamondbacks lost another one. That sucks. Yasmani Tomas homered though in the losing cause. My Indians sure lost a close one in extras. That sucks. They didn't have any offense. Anyway, football today. I want lots of wins, I really do.

I am sad to come back from working abroad to find out the Todd Shapiro Show has changed so much. I miss Jay & Roddy a lot. I'm not sure what happened or when haven't had time to catch up yet(although I've now lost interest in the show so maybe won't catch up, I mean Jay and Roddy DO have a new show that is much better anyway, I mean, it's all Jay & Roddy and No Todd. Win - Win)

The show has gone downhill since they left. Was only ever really good when they were there and on. I only ever really listened to catch the little glimmers of Roddy & Jay's genius when Todd would stop being narcissistic and give them mic time.

Not sure, If I'll ever find out what happened since I am now listening to the

The DUMB SHOW is WAY BETTER than the Re-Todd Shitpooro Show

Todd is just a gay today on his own show as when people used to call into the Blundell Show and say "Todd is Gay".

Anyone remember Re-Todd On Street in a big diaper because Dean told him to do it? LOL

It's really a shame that Dean Blundell didn't get a team of people like Jay Brody & Roddy Colmer and a Platform like SiriusXM to broadcast on, he Would of probably put it to better use than Todd.

Also, one last thing. I want to repost this eloquent response from above. Very well said! I agree and think this would make sense

"Jay and Roddy being let go from the Todd Shapiro show was simple.
