Sorry Cheryl but I'm first today.

@Mike: Glad you got to go to the maritimes for the first time. Sounds like you and your family had a blast.

I gave CTV's "Your Morning" (the Canada AM replacement) a chance for its first week, but I don't think I can keep watching.

It's a modified version of Canada AM with a bit more chatter among the hosts ... which wouldn't be such a bad thing if the hosts were better. The sets are cramped -- it's like each set is a phone booth. Very claustrophobic. And Ben Mulroney ... well, I wasn't expecting to like him, but I also wasn't expecting him to come off as poorly as he does in their little confabs. I've lost count of the number of times he's accidentally been a dick to one of his cohosts.

At this point, I don't think there's a morning show worth watching on TV. Fortunately, Metro Morning is superb radio (and TV for an hour).

The comments section is running a bit low, maybe we can get into a huge religious debate to increase the traffic.

Harper resigned today.
I don't care for his politics but kudos to someone who served the public and did a thankless job for a long time.

Well, I'm far from first. That's okay. Religion? I'm not religious. It was forced on me when I went to boarding school and prayer actually does nothing for me. There is no God, at least that's what I think anyway. Anyway, baseball wasn't great last night. My Orioles lost and got shut out. My Diamondbacks lost. Well, the Braves are in my pool so it is a win either way. My Indians lost really bad to the Rangers who are also in my pool. It was just not a good baseball night. Postal strike still on. Oh well, that means I won't get my junk mail from Rogers, but it will all pile up after the strike is over and strikes don't solve anything. All strikes do is hurt the public. I hate unions. There is no point in going on strike because a strike just hurts the public and you don't get paid going on strike so it's stupid.

Barry - I also checked out the new "Your Morning" show and other than it being Canada AM with a new set and cast the one big take away was that it felt very American, if one could use that as a term. By American I mean that I felt like I was watching one of the US morning shows with news, weather and other segments were presented. Don't know if CTV is aiming to go that route but it's definitely not working after week 1 in my eyes.

I also don't think Ben Mulroney and Ann Marie Mediwake have much chemistry going on. I suspect it's a case where they have nothing in common as Ben sees himself as the "star" of the show and Anne Marie just wants to do the news type things.

Sorry for the lack of updates lately. I've been mostely unplugged for a couple of weeks, enjoying our east coast with the fam.

The Hip concert was fantastic, Mike Richards is no longer on the air at 1050, I loved the Olympics, Navarro is a Blue Jay again, Steven Hill passed away and some crazy shit happened while I was away with a crossbow.

August 26, 2016 @ 7:31 PM

Wally

Toronto FC are in 1st place in the East. Going to the game on Saturday (vs Montreal) as well as the CNE. BMO Field will be absolutely bonkers and packed with fans (unlike the ~15k that showed up to Argos game the first day of CNE).

Going to be great

Mike Richards gone at TSN 1050? What's the scoop?

August 26, 2016 @ 8:41 PM

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

The writing was on the wall for Mike Richards when they took him off mornings and gave him the 1-4pm shift. Quite simply, you don't pay someone morning show money for a 1pm show. Just ask Greg Brady about that....

I think TSN just ran out of patience. Mike never delivered the numbers they expected, and with his contract expiring early in 2017, they decided to cut the ties before Labour Day.

As soon as he can talk about it, he's coming back on Toronto Mike'd.

Nice trip you took Mike, the east coast is most definitely a driving holiday, given all the great little touristy places you can stop in. Once your down there everything seems very close.

August 26, 2016 @ 10:44 PM

Barry

@Hans

I suspect that a big part of the "chemistry" problem is that Mulroney doesn't have good chemistry with anyone. I'm not sure about Mediwake -- I haven't seen enough of her working with others -- but some people just aren't able to develop chemistry on screen and Mulroney has always struck me as one of those people. When he was first announced as a host, I figured that would be his undoing.

Do |I have to talk about the Orioles. That game was really really disgusting. Oh well, Manny Machado homered twice in the losing cause. How about those Indians, eh? Rangers are in my pool, but I still wanted the Indians to win. Corey Kluber is awesome. Anyway, my Diamondbacks won as well, but they won't be in the playoffs. I am still in last in my pool though. Mike is going to win the money, it's a given because I don't see how he could fall behind now. I am in last means I get first picks and I'm picking Indians and Cubs. I think that is who will be in the World Series so I'll win the playoff pool. Curling starts next weekend. My trainer isn't curling, but Kean is. Kean is going to do well this season and win the Brier.

I haven't seen any of CTV's Your Morning, but I did read this from John Doyle of the Globe and Mail: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/arts/television/john-doyle-ctvs-canada-am-replacement-is-hairbrained-inanity/article31573698/

Personally, I'm not hungry for harebrained inanity.

August 27, 2016 @ 8:15 AM

Barry

Doyle points out what is painfully obvious to viewers: Your Morning isn't in CTV's News division. The news writing is terrible. It's not just the overwrought segues ... often the news copy that is written misunderstands the news being written about. (Their report on Proxima B glossed over the significant aspect of the discovery -- that the planet is so close to us.) Is it any wonder the hosts don't understand the news when even the news writers don't understand it?

The only person I like on the show is the weather person, whose name I am blanking on. It's not that she's so good at it, but she seems like a very nice person and she moved here from Alberta for this job, so the softy in me is rooting for her. But maybe bring back Canada AM and its hosts and let her do the weather there.

Until last Saturdays broadcast of the the Hip in Kingston, I was a casual fan, enjoyed NOIS, Bobcaygeon etc. But with the focus on this final tour, I was blown away by Downie's depth as a musician, poet and all round Canadian.
Unfortunately I am always late to the party.

I just tuned into The Todd Shapiro Show on Sirius XM for the first time, and could not believe what I heard. He had a guest on, who kept referring to African Americans as and I'm not joking and neither was he, "The Blacks!" The guy was introduced as a sponsor. It was a racist tirade and quite disgusting. Have any of you heard his show?

August 27, 2016 @ 11:30 PM

Cheryl

Do I have to talk about baseball? It was disgusting last night. My Orioles lost another one. Chris Davis homered twice and Mark Trumbo homered, but they still lost. My Diamondbacks lost. My Indians lost. I am in last place in my pool. I hope I do better in the playoff pool and the football pool. Anyway, it was just depressing losing so much yesterday. Well, curling spiel in Oakville next weekend and Kean will win it. I know they will.

So,girls and boys; What will happen first this week starting Monday?

Eugenie Bouchard will lose at the U.S. Open tennis and be out ?
or
The Blue Jays will loose 2 games in a row?
or
A current host at Fan/590 will get The "Golden Handshake"

Make your picks...

August 28, 2016 @ 8:32 AM

twins from bolton

I see it was pouring rain in Toronto this afternoon.
MVP - 3 homers after getting injured in 1st inning.

@ Dawn
My pick is that someone that is always commenting here will talk about baseball & her football pool (bet - not pool) picks again tomorrow early. With this hot weather there maybe no ice for the speil next weekend.

Go Jays Go

How many more weeks until curling is over?

August 28, 2016 @ 7:03 PM

Cheryl

My Orioles won. That's great. 5 to 0. Steve Pearce and Mark Trumbo both homered and Mark Trumbo has 40 homers already, best in the league. My Diamondbacks also won and how about Yasmani Tomas, another homer. He's awesome. My Indians lost again though. That's not a good thing, but I have the Rangers in my pool. Well, I'm losing the pool anyway. Curling is just starting. It won't be over until the spring.

August 29, 2016 @ 5:14 AM

Deheryl

Do I have to talk about football ? I got a letter today from my brother Deheryl and my other brother deheryl. I hate the post office they don't work on weekends but I almost never get any mail on Wednesdays their is something not right, anyways my other brother deheryl prints that the reason they did not show up for the draft of the football pool is that they bought a used car but niether of them knows how to drive a standard. They could of rode there bikes they live only 1 1/2 miles down the road.deheryl also says since they will be tied for last in the pool they should get 1st & 2nd pickes in the playoff pool plus deheryl says the kid they bought the car from wants to join the playoff pool so she should get 3rd pick and I draft last.Plus they want to increase the entry fee for the playoff pool to $ 9.33.Anyways I think something is not right here,I don't think their should be and increase to $ 9.33 ?

Well, I don't want to talk about my Orioles. They fricken lost. JJ Hardy homered though. My Diamondbacks didn't play last night. My Indians won again. It's about time. They win it 1 to 0. Well, another negotiations day at the Post office. Strikes do absolutely nothing at all. You don't get paid at all if you're on strike. Anyway, get a fricken contract already and cut the strike stuff out.

UPDATE: So the winnah is Eugenie Bouchard whom played 7 hot weeks of tennis over 2 years ago and has been fooling the public and the media ever since.

@Dawn

She's now just like Justin Beiber. Fame has gotten to her as rated # 4 or 5 in the world 2 years ago & since then falling FAST in rankings. Too bad as Cda. was behind her future all the way & now, who cares.

Eugenie Bouchard wishes she was just like Justin Beiber. Beiber is at the top of his game right now. Bouchard, is not.

How about those Orioles. Great win. I hope they win again tonight. Homers by Manny Machado, Steve Pearce and Matt Wieters. Wonderful. My Diamondbacks won as well which is a great thing even though they won't make the playoffs. My Indians also won as well. Homers by Jason Kipnis and Rajai Davis. I actually got five out of six wins in my pool. The Rangers won as well and the Braves won for a change. Pirates lost though. I'm still losing in my pool though.

August 31, 2016 @ 5:20 AM

Cheryl

I don't want to talk about the Orioles. They lost last night and so did my Diamondbacks. It sucks. My Indians won though. Corey Kluber pitched a great game. Homers by Carlos Santana and Roberto Perez. That's awesome. Well, looks like the postal workers got a contract. They still have to vote though and they can reject the vote so who knows. There still could be a strike. As I said, strikes solve nothing. People don't get paid for going on strike so why do it. I hate unions and always will. I will never vote NDP ever. Well, funny. My Habs always start out by playing the Leafs in the opener, but they're not. Leafs are in Ottawa and my habs play Buffalo. Anyway, doesn't matter because my Habs will win for sure. Carey Price is back so the Price is right.

September 1, 2016 @ 5:23 AM

I always felt like the Orioles had been playing well over their heads, given that their starting pitching is terrible and really, the only edge they have on the Jays and Red Sox is their bullpen. With the third-best offence in the division and a terrible rotation they were bound to fall off at some point. Really, they seemed like a .500 team that was overachieving. They've had a lot of luck -- they've only scored 7 more runs than they've allowed this year, which is mediocre, and should result in a .500 record.

Since the All-Star Break they're six games below .500, I believe, and don't look like they'll turn things around. The Red Sox are a better team, the Jays are a better team, and the Tigers might be a better team too, which has to be concerning for the Orioles, given that they've fallen into a tie with the Tigers for the final Wild Card spot. If I had to bet, I'd bet on the Orioles missing the playoffs.

The Red Sox and Jays are the class of the division and as a Jays fan I worry about the Sox now that Price seems to be pitching like himself again and Pomeranz has had some good starts. If the Sox get good starting pitching down the stretch, and continue to have the best offence in the league, they could overtake the Jays. On the plus side, the Sox have struggled lately against some weak teams, and any Jays fans who get frustrated about a hot-and-cold offence should have a look at the game-by-game results of the Sox. Boston fans are a lot more frustrated than we are. But I do think the Sox are a team to fear.
