Regarding Elliotte Freidman's mistaken call during last night's swim, I don't blame him, I had a hard time knowing who was in which lane for many of the races. I feel like there used to be more visuals (onscreen graphics) to mark the lanes in the past. During these games, the graphics only come up right at the end when the swimmers touch the wall, which is cool, but it would be nice to even just have lane numbers (or flags) on screen during the race. Unless the swimmer has a vastly different coloured swimcap (like the aussies) I can't tell who's who until the race is over.

Well, how about those Orioles. Great win. Chris Tillman pitched a great game as usual. Mark Trumbo hit a grand slam. Also Adam Jones homered. Wonderful game and it's about time Mark Trumbo hit another home run. My Diamondbacks also had another awesome win. Too bad they're wayh down in the standing. Indians also had a great win. Great pitching by Corey Kluber and homers by Mike Napoli, Jose Ramirez and Carlos Santana. Pirates also won, but Rangers and Braves lost so I got four wins. I wonder when I will get six wins.

I was happy to find out that Obama and Hillary were the founders of ISIS from Trump as that thought hadn't crossed my mind before. Then I was distraught to find out Trump was being sarcastic when he repeated that statement about 6 times in two days...

Now I don't know what to believe, because previous to several days ago Trump had never spoken outright lies...

I was with a group of people this morning and they were really ripping on Friedman for a mistake he made last night. I had no idea what they were talking about as I'm not watching the olympics at all, or paying too much attention to them. So I had little to say other than acknowledge that I'm a huge fan of Friedman's work but I did ask them what happens when they make mistakes?

When I make a mistake, few, if anyone, knows.

Unfortunate for Friedman that anyone watching heard his mistake, but it sounds like he owned it right away.

People need to move on.

Elliotte was obviously still rattled when he called the Oleksiak race. He referred to her a few times as Overholt. I watched the race live, but didn't catch the error. After I heard about it, I re-watched the race, and sure enough, it was there. The replay video had the Overholt error edited out. Rough night for him. Watching the Phelps race, Byron MacDonald did say that Lochte was in front, which setup the wrong call by Elliotte.
I think that Elliotte is doing an awesome job at the olympics, and is a great sportscaster. Being the professional that he is, he acknowledged it. I'm sure he will learn from it, and it will make him better.

I'd preface this by stating what we already know. Friedman is a pro, and a total class act. I've had him over for an ep of Toronto MIke'd and he was incredibly honest and self depracating.

And, considering he's never done this before, his swim calls have been great. I've watched every night.

But when the graphic came on the board after the first 50m, it was Phelps in first. I was yelling at the TV that Friedman was saying Lochte was in first. He got mixed up.... it happens.... it was just unfortunate it happened during such a big race.

I felt really, really bad though when Penny won gold but he confused her with Emily Overholt. Then, the graphic was ultra confusing (not the CBC's fault) because it had Penny in first but only gave the Olympic record to Simone Manuel.

It was a tough night at the pool, but that's a tough gig and it happens. None of this will stick to Friedman, who's just a quality broadcaster and a class act.

You're right Mike, Elliotte will recover professionally from this gaffe because he is such a pro and very good at what he does, especially in hockey. His swimming coverage was really good right up until last night. The unfortunate part is that it was such a major race (the Phelps race), one that could be replayed over and over again for a long time. I suppose it's an occupational hazard that mistakes can come back to haunt you over and over again.

Not that it needs to be said. But Jose Bautista's days in Toronto are clearly numbered. He will be 36 years old next season, his defensive skills appear to be in decline, and he has battled various injuries throughout the season. I cannot see how any team would offer him even half of what he demanded to remain in Toronto. Jose gambled and lost.

You're right, CBC would be replaying that Phelps win over and over again if it wasn't for the gaffe. Shit timing.

I am really excited about the Liza Fromer interview, I think she's one of the best media personalities in the city. A few questions I'd love to ask her, hope you see this before the interview. Thanks ToMIke

#1 Something about iIza is a great interviewer, when the time is right she can do a hard interview and call somebody on their BS. The perfect example was the interview with the anti-sex ed guy last year, who was making stuff up & was upset that sex ed actually had actually real facts about sex. LIza was respectful but didn't let him go on unchallenged. You don't see that much in media, especially morning shows, who seem to do only fluff or let guest say whatever absurd BS they want. My question is did Liza get any heat whenever she pushes back when the guest is obviously full of it.

#2 I really liked the Liza and Carolyn combo, but I wonder what LIza thought when Carolyn came on to the show, did it concern demographically they are somewhat similar.

#3 What was the deal with the Oakley/Morningshow simulcast. It just seemed like an odd fit.

Just over a month ago, I was listening to CDs in my 2006 Subaru Legacy. Disc 5, of the five in the 6-disc changer, The Pursuit of Happiness' "Love Junk", finished playing. I was concerned when the next thing I heard was the radio not Mother Mother's "The Sticks". The CD changer had malfunctioned. Ohhhh crap. This isn't going to be good - or inexpensive to fix.

Most of today's car stereos are at least partly integrated units, as manufacturers add features that people "need" to distract their attention and vision away from the road. My car's head unit is a Panasonic engineered for Subaru, part of an integrated panel and circuit board with the HVAC (heating ventilation air conditioning) system.

I had to get the CDs out, especially the TPOH one, as it was my brother's, given to him by Moe Berg himself. An independent A.R./O.C.D. (in a good way) car audio technician was eventually able to get the CDs out, but the changer was confirmed as toast. He was both fascinated and frustrated by the (very good) engineering of the head unit and changer. His recommendation was to get used to listening to the radio, as I would find all the alternatives stupidly expensive and not very aesthetically pleasing. Sure enough, Subaru Canada's price for a replacement head unit: $1,465. Of course, I go check American Subaru parts sources: List is U$814.65 (about C$1,085 at the time), but my price would be U$689.84 (C$920). Not everything from Subaru is so stupidly overpriced in Canada vs. the U.S., but this head unit is. Problem still: no units available in the U.S. Scouring the internet and various connections turn up no head units.

After 10½ years, I have done well to have no issue with the CD changer, but still, what a PITA. No wonder car audio places are diversifying their businesses, as auto manufacturers make their own units fully integrated into the vehicles for audio, video, HVAC, navigation and more. I will give one point to mp3 files: they don't get stuck in the media player. Still, uncompressed CD audio, in exactly the form that the artist and producer worked so hard in the studio to get the way you are supposed to hear it, is superior to any highly compressed digital audio format. One of the reasons that I still have my 2006 car is that I have had some mechanical upgrades done, but it was reasonably affordable to buy and it has been a blast to drive. Put simply, there is nothing on the road that fits all of the criteria to replace it, which is way I have "refurbished" it, but I'm done with that. I guess a new(er) car is in order some day. As much as I am a car guy, I really hate buying them.

The Blue Jays need to forget about Edwin Encarnacion and Jose Bautista and concentrate every effort and dime available and make an unprecedented pitch this off season for Bryce Harper. Although Harper is not a free agent until 2019, the Jays can unload these headaches (Edwin and Jose) to the Washington Nationals , package some quality minor league prospects and try to catch this once in a lifetime prize before he hits the open market.

If Rogers wants to prove their worth to the Blue Jays fans, they will take a swing at this "generational" talent who will be the face of baseball in Canada for the next 15 years.

We sellout every game, we have the revenue, now Rogers, you need to supply the balls.

@Douglas,

If you're really concerned about MP3 compression, you can go with FLAC (open source) or ALAC (Apple-proprietary) files these days -- identical to the CD. 5x bigger than MP3s, but storage is pretty cheap now too. Pioneer's NEX car receivers handle FLAC for example.

...but all that said, I'm sceptical that MP3 isn't good enough, especially in the car. Granted there are definitely poorly-made MP3s out there. I can't tell a lick of difference between a high quality one and the source though, myself.

But to the real matter at hand, that TPOH album is awesome, and I even managed to snag a copy on vinyl.

August 12, 2016 @ 2:39 PM

Douglas

@Markosaar:
I'm familiar with a variety of compressed audio formats. Effectively, no aftermarket head unit will work in my car without turning the dash into a dog's breakfast - that coming from a guy who has some pretty impressive installations on his long, long resumé - even if I spend thousands of dollars to do it right, and that is so not in the cards, let alone worth it. So I'll pin the blame on Subaru.

MP3s and other higher compression formats (so we're not talking FLAC) all have to lose something to bring down the file size. My hearing isn't the best anymore, but when I notice that some parts of a song I love have been deleted because supposedly I won't hear them (one of the foundations of what to take out in compression), I intensely dislike it. Compressed files also tend to be heavier on bass. Now, a lot of people these days like that. Bass = some strange form of good quality. Balanced, crisp sound is better, let alone best.

I know I am in the minority these days being a person who prefers quality over quantity. So be it.

I hit "Post Comment" instead of "Preview" last time above*. I was going to finish off by saying that there simply is not a newer medium sized sedan (no "SUVs" or "crossovers" - I want a car that sits nearer to the ground for better ride and handling, is lighter and more fuel efficient - the laws of physics do not change because of engineering) out there that is truly fun to drive first, let alone trackable (light, hobby - not serious) until you're way over $50,000-$60,000 now - and all of those are luxury cars first, sports-oriented second (maybe). In Canada, at least. So I still have my 2006 Subaru Legacy, and probably will for some time.

* Mike, do you think you could change the colour just a bit on one of those two buttons, or not put them right next to each other?

Great and/or interesting points. Unless he has a killer comeback from his current injury, I'll bet that Bautista has left $5-10 million a year off the table now compared to before this season started.

My gut tells me that the Jays, if they are going to sign one of Bautista or Encarnacion, it will be Edward and his parrot DHing and playing first base as needed.

Friedman deserves the criticism. He shouldn't be fired but he screwed up a big event and a monumental achievement by two different athletes. So the complaints are warranted.

A special place in hell is a little over dramatic, I think.

But the real criticism should be directed at Buck Martinez. Has anyone else noticed he gets players names wrong and such?

Toronto radio fans may be interested in this. I have posted all the tape that I have of CFNY on their first day after the power increase in 1977. Had posted this in bits before.

You will hear former CHUM FM heavyweights David Pritchard and Reiner Schwarz on this first day and it is apparent that the idea was to bring back the old CHUM FM brand of free form radio and more. Pritchard was the new program director Sadly the line-up and aspirations of the station were short lived but here is a reminder of what could have been. Should point out that CFNY was a pioneering force after the David Pritchard era but it did not exactly replicate the old CHUM FM free form spirit.

@Wally, just curious - were you slagging TFC fans last June when only 16k attended their home game against DC United? Slagging the local teams and their fans seems to be something you take great pleasure in. Damn, it was less than three years ago that TFC was drawing less than 13k to some league home games.

Give it time - four home games in is way too soon to draw any conclusions. Maybe get out of the house and go to a game - you might find that it is a lot more fun than sitting at home baiting other sports fans.

How about those Orioles. They won and that's great. Mark Trumbo homered again and that's awesome. He now has 33 homers, still on top. Chris Davis also homered and Dylan bundy pitched a great game as usual with another Zach Britton save. My Diamondbacks lost again though which sucks. Why can't they win. They're in fricken last place. Well, my Indians won which is great. Homers by Brandon Guyer and also by Jose Ramirez. Carlos Carrasco finally won a game again. I also got wins from the Rangers, Pirates and Braves so I got five wins. I am still in last place in the pool. The rule is that whoever is in last place gets first pick in the playoff pool. I know who I would pick and that would be Orioles and/or Indians. One of those teams will win it all. I just know.

You say give it time but I ask, what team in history of time in any sport moves to a new venue and doesn't sell out? How much time do you need?

Contrary to what you may think, when the Argos announced the move to BMO I was neutral towards it. My only concern was with field conditions but the ground crew have done a fantastic job. My disdain towards Argo fans come from the fact that many suggest they should have preferential treatment simply because "they are the Argos" even after moving into someones home. BMO is TFC's home and TFC should always have #1 consideration. I did want the Argos to succeed and I do feel like their is a place for the CFL in Canadian culture, but at some point you have to stop propping up a dead horse. Why do so many people want the Arizona Coyotes to move? It's because they want hockey to be played in front of people who care and in a market that will embrace them. If the Argos had a large dedicated fan base then they could play literally anywhere and those people should follow. But they don't.

The complaint about the dome was atmosphere. Now the Argos are in an atmosphere-rich stadium and still struggle. Argo fans contradict themselves by claiming "it's only 4 games" then in the next breath say "they are the oldest franchise in North America".

Once again, picking specific games to prove a point with TFC attendance now? I've done the leg work for you, here are TFC's average attendance since their inception . I'd also like to point out that before renovations the stadium held ~20k. But I forgot, when Argos play on Labour Day and during the EX then i'll see the power of Argos nation. It'll have nothing to do with them playing a team from down the street and in a stadium right in the middle of the last day of the EX with thousands surround the venue.

@Wally "The Jays are playing at home" excuse was pretty fresh. I thought "hmmm wonder if their is a way to guarantee that the Jays won't play at home the same times the Argos play at home" oh yeah there was and the Argos wanted to go away from that this year.

@Sid, Simply put if TFC (or any sports team) push to get into a new stadium, by claiming the old stadium is a big issue for their problems and once they go to the new stadium and very little changes attendance they all would have been called out and mocked. You would think they would still be a "Honeymoon" period here, what's really scary is that the numbers are probably inflated by fans curious in just seeing how BMO looks as a football stadium, once that goes away after the first season, what the floor for the Argos>

@Jason, I agree it's super uncomfortable watching it, and if he was a private citizen I would agree. But I am not a fan of white washing history, acting like something didn't happen (I also support steroid users and criminals in sport HOF, if their sports record deserves it) Rob Ford for better or worse is part of Toronto history. I just hope the Ford video is just a cautionary reminder of what can happen

I am not doing well in my pool at all. Oh well, I will definitely get first pick in the playoff pool because I am in last place so instead of money, I get first pick which means that nobody else can pick until I pick my team for the playoff pool. The Ford crack scandal, whether we like it or not, is part of the city's history, and not an insignificant part, either. The video was central to that and it's what started his downfall (which resulted in him being stripped of his powers). Do we, as individuals, need to see it? No, and frankly, reaction to it has been rather muted -- most people just note that it's out there. But it's a part of the historical record, and as such, it should be public, and not just something only a select few individuals have seen.

As for "disrespectful," I don't see how "respect" is even a factor. I don't think once someone dies that our views on who they were should change, and how we talk about them should only be altered in the immediate aftermath of their death -- which we are well past. (If anything, the release of the video shows that one bit of reported dialogue was actually slightly wrong -- he doesn't call Trudeau a "f*g" in the video -- so it clears up that he wasn't being homophobic on this particular occasion.)

This is not a good thing. My Diamondbacks lost as well although Yasmani Tomas homered again. How can anyone not like Yasmani Tomas. My Indians won again though which is great. You can always count on Corey Kluber to have a good game or usually you can anyway. He pitched a really good game. Rangers won as well and Pirates won, but Braves lost so I got three wins. Anyway, Lonnie Chisenhall hit a home run and Carlos Santana homered as well, but that was really not enough. Pirates and Rangers won, but Braves lost so I only got three wins. I need to keep winning. Indians also won though. that was a comeback Indians win getting two homers in the bottom of the ninth by Jose Ramirez and Tyler Naquin. Awesome. Rangers also won, but Pirates and Braves lost so all my NL teams lost last night so I got two wins.

I still can't find the next open Mike, so this one keeps growing and growing. My Orioles lost. I don't want to talk about that game. My Diamondbacks managed to squeak out a win though. I only got that win in my pool as my Indians lost again. that game really sucked except the bottom of the fourth when there was hope for a comeback as they tied it with a homer by Lonnie Chisenhall. Anyway, Rangers also lost. I am not doing well in my pool. I'm at the bottom in last place. The good thing is I get to be the first pick. I get to pick one AL team and one NL team. I'm picking the Indians and Cubs. Bring on the playoff pool already.

@Cheryl: Mike's busy traveling with the fam. Not sure if he simply forgot to do Open Mike this week or maybe he's just not gonna bother I don't know, but anyway the reason you're not finding it is cause there is none...so far.

I'm posting this here just cause I don't know where else to post it.

Watched the Hip concert on CBC last night. I'll be honest, I wasn't sure if I would watch cause I'm mostly into the Hip's older stuff, but I'm happy I watched it. It was cool. I'm sure being there must have been an amazing experience. And Mike as you predicted, they finished it off with "Ahead By A Century".

Toronto Mike Verified as the defacto Toronto Mike

I watched the Kingston Hip concert with the fam on Cape Breton island. It was fantastic.

We were dancing, singing along, talking about the lyrics, but when Scared finished up, I just wept. My 12-year old daughter was weeping too, likely because she saw her dad crying.

And yes, just as they did at the Toronto show I attended last week, they closed with Ahead by a Century.

Stare in the morning shroud and then the day began
I tilted your cloud, you tilted my hand
Rain falls in real time and rain fell through the night
No dress rehearsal, this is our life

~ Ahead By A Century

Perfect.

@Cheryl

I'm sorry, but in Cape Breton data has been sketchy and I've been jumping on wifi periodically mainly to share a photo here and there and to update Canada's medals. I forgot the Open Mike on Friday.

The Open Mike will return this coming Friday, I promise.

Okay. Now I know why I couldn't find the open Mike. Anyway, my Orioles lost. That was no good. Mark Trumbo and Jonathan Schoop both homered in the losing cause. My Diamondbacks lost as well. My Indians won though. That was wonderful to come back and win like that. Jose Ramirez homered in the bottom of the eighth inning to win that game. Otherwise no wins for my pool as the Pirates and Braves lost and the Rangers lost so one win for my Indians. I am really not doing well in my pool, but then I get first picks.

Tuned in to CTV new morning show today.Mainly because the other three morning shows on Toronto TV for different reasons are UN-watchable.

Made it 8 minutes...4 people ALL talking over each other trying to be " The Star"
Tip to weather girl, "partly cloudy to mostly cloudy with a chance of rain then possible clearing" just don't cut it.

Will check back in when the Leafs win 20 games..guessing early 2017
If they are still on.
Now Toronto has 4 garbage AM shows.
You might think someone would step up but,I guess the public doesn't matter too much.

Yeah, they might need more time to gel, but it didn't impress me.

The set is terrible. If you've got claustrophobia, stay away, because it looks like they're broadcasting from a closet. I guess that's the consequence of moving to the downtown studios. The Canada AM set was open and comfortable, which is ideal for a morning show. The cramped Your Morning set is going to stress people out.

I usually like Ann Marie Mediwake, but Ben Mulroney has no chemistry with anyone. And cohosts need chemistry. He's not a great interviewer, either. When Mulroney, the son of a former PM, interviews Justin Trudeau, the son of a former PM and himself a current PM, you'd hope for something at least a little riveting, but it was a snoozer.

My Orioles won again. That's great. Mark Trumbo got homer number 38. He's so good and Jonathan Schoop also homered. My Diamondbacks also won. They beat the Braves who are also in my pool though. Yasmani Tomas and Paul Goldschmidt both homered. That's awesome. My Indians won as well. Shutout by Carlos Carrasco and a homer by Carlos Santana. It was a great night for sure and I want a repeat.

Well, how about those Orioles. Kevin Gausman pitched a great game last night. That was a wonderful win. My Diamondbacks lost though which is not a good thing. My Indians really got clobbered. That is no good. Rangers lost, but Pirates won. Well, the Braves beat my Diamondbacks and they are both in my pool. Anyway, hopefully I get six wins. Well, the other person I have the football pool with called it a pool anyway. I just hope I do well in it.

@Deheryl

Still NO clue.

I just love comedy reading & surprised no Olympic comments,
Orioles & Diamondbacks in world series or maybe Cleveland, Texas, Pirates or Braves or ???

Can't wait for Hockey to start everyday with Habs & Coyotes , Probably cheering for U.S. team in World Cup in Sept.

I hate the Olympics. Why do they run events at different times every day? Billy did not run a Olympic pool this year so why should I care anyway.

Well, how about those Orioles. Great win. Homers by Manny Machado and Matt Wieters. Diamondbacks also won as well. Lots of homers, Jake Lam, Paul Goldschmidt again and Jean Sigura. Indians lost though which is no good. Rangers won. Pirates lost. I got three pool wins.
